stock touchwiz ux better than cyanogen mod 9? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i loved cm9 on my galaxy s2, so i flashed cm9 on my galaxy s3 and it was rather bland
imo touchwiz has surpassed cm9
the video player with moving thumbnails, plays pretty much any video, even has a pop up play (as good as any on the play store)
the photo editor (wont find a better one)
has a file manager (cm9 doesnt and most market ones suck)
music player is as good as any (resizable widget, scroll through songs which is cool)
the browser feels as fast as stock (though the horizontal window tab scrolling isnt as good as stock) though its irrelevant because you can download ics+ browser from the play store)
camera (much better than stock) though stock does look nicer
and the motion gestures, smart stay etc
all samsung as to do is incorporate ics stock folders and vertical window tabs in there browser and its game over imo
this is just my opinion. what do you think?

I prefer aosp look and feel
Cm9 is even faster and smoother then touchwiz for me. It's just a lighter feel to it and feels like I can use the power of my phone to multitask and apps instead of wasting half of it to touchwiz :s
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

I also prefer touch wiz, so many selling points of the s3 are based around touch wiz and almost all of them are lost with cm9. As usual its a case of personal preference.

Why do people Hate TouchWiz? What is Wrong with TouchWiz? Debate!!

Since the day the Galaxy s came I've fallen in with loved Touchwiz as matter of fact it is one of the reason i will not be trading in my Vibrant for Nexus s, well until touchwiz is ported nexus s at least.
But I've notice others with vibrant and other galaxy s phones hate Touchwiz and i want to know why? Please leave response as to why you love or hate touchwiz?
I like some things about TouchWiz...but...
its not customisable
the icons are too big and iphone-like
a lot of screen real estate is lost because everything on the homescreen is too big (should have grids of 5x5 instead of 4x4)
I like the app drawer...jumping to screens when clicking the small dots etc
and its quite fast for me
I really like touchwiz to. I tried launcher pro and adw and i really didnt like them. But i did just installed nero from tw and the gingerbread launcher is sweet.
Fear the beard...
For me it's not so much the TW Launcher as it is the widgets. I've found that I really use Feeds & Updates and Daily Briefing quite a lot, and though there are vaguely comparable ones, none of them have grabbed me.
The notification bar is also unique and extremely useful, so much so that Cyanogen largely copied it.
I think the biggest reason why people hate Touchwiz is because it has been blamed for much of the initial lagginess of the phone. Now we know this is largely not true.
It's childs play to use another launcher however, and people may prefer widgets that do not bind to TW. To each his own, which is the true beauty of Android.
What I don't like about TouchWiz:
-the page indicator on top can't be turned off or set to auto-hide
-the dockbar icon labels don't match the rest of the UI (they don't have black bubbles around the text, it looks mismatched)
-cannot change the number of rows on homescreens
-no swipe actions (ADW ruined me for swiping down anywhere on the screen to get the notification pulldown)
-no activities shortcuts (Wireless AP requires a shortcut!)
-seems to run slower/laggier than ADW or launcherpro
What I do like about TouchWiz:
-FEEDS AND UPDATES
-FEEDS AND UPDATES
-FEEDS AND UPDATES
Soooo much better than the Facebook widget...
Edit: I use ADW.Launcher myself and love it. I really miss Feeds & Updates though.
The app drawer can not scroll like a stock android launcher.
The docks can not be customizable to the level Android allows.
The icons look like an iPhone - AND I hate scrolling left to right (and I dont like the view for scrolling up/down)
I switch ROMs often, TW does not backup it's settings like LP/ADW can.
Other than those things, TW is great... I also prefer the widgets that come with LauncherPro Plus and the speed/customizations that it allows. TW COULD be able to duplicate those features..... but until it does, no thanks.
I love touchwiz. Love the left to right scrolling of the app drawer.love the look and feel. Love the icons. The dock icons are custamizable. This is one reason i dont like custom roms without touchwiz because i love it sooo much.
Things i hate. You cant hide the notification bar and it starts to Burn into your screen. Errrr
It's the iPhone clone look that turns me off. It was bad enough that the samsung made the phone look physically like an iPhone, but to skin Android to look like the iPhone's software was over the top. I don't want people to think I have an iPhone.
youre right

i got tired of the ipod touch i had and it resembles the ipod touch iphone too much for me. plus i dont like lines on my screen. i use adw and minimalist theme with black background, totally awesome for me. i can do with out the non sense.
"I love that Google is innovating the Smartphone technology space at an amazing rate. Android is growing fast and holds so much promise. For instance Google voice actions which I am sure you are all familiar with is such a great idea and I cant wait to use it with 2.2. The updated Gmail client and services as well, Chrome to phone are both awesome ideas but will never work on 2.1 so I am looking forward to 2.2 or higher. I own a car and well I do take calls while driving and would like to use voice search or voice dialing to be hands free. Obviously Android can do this just not with 2.1 this is a pretty cool feature also available on 2.2 or higher. What Samsung has done with Touchwiz is pretty cool too. Let's face it Google is perhaps innovating the space a bit too fast. Samsung has developed Touchwiz not only to slow that hectic innovation down. But, perhaps stall it completely on Samsungs devices that way we can enjoy 2.1 with Touchwiz just a little bit longer. It also sets the Galaxy S devices apart from all the other Android smartphones in the market running Google's latest innovations. But also because we like it and it is so good.
That new android Keyboard for Gingerbread is just what the Doctor ordered isn't it? How about the new Google personalized voice recognition for Google voice? Nice, but no thanks I like taking it slow with Touchwiz and 2.1. Who needs location services and GPS anyway right? What are your favorite 2.1 features?" - by Countbunny from the other forum.
That is how I feel about it.

Your feelings on touchwiz?

I had ordered this without ever even giving touchwiz a thought. Figured the phone would show up, I would play with it about 5 minutes, install new launcher, never look at touch wiz again. After I ordered it I downloaded the user manual and did some reading and it appears that there is some interesting and useful work here that without having the phone I think I like. Watching videos to see if I could see some of the stuff in action seemed to me to confirm that there is some good stuff there.
My question is how are you liking touchwiz? Not the phone, the phone with touchwiz. I Have encountered an older version and was left heavily underwhelmed. Please be specific, I like this, I hate that, and give a reason. If its just because that works fine but have a reason.
Remember guys this is mostly about opinion and little about fact. Leave folks be with theirs and vice versa.
edit.... Also please add in your predilections toward flashing roms, or not, as it were. An opinion from a daily flasher is much different than one from someone who never flashes and runs the stock rom.
I thought I'd hate it but I'm actually really liking it! Some features I love:
- The lockscreen is great and you get little tabs you can slide when you get a text or missed call.
- You can reject a call with a text message (So handy)
- Resizable widgets
- Customiseable dock
- Hold down 'Menu' for search in apps
- Quick settings in the notification tray
- Movable homescreens
- Customisable app tray
and more Besides you could always replace it with another launcher and I'm sure custom ROMs are on the way.
I changed it within seconds to launcher pro. However the drawer in launcher pro isnt smooth at all, im actually thinking of changing back.

Try Go Launcher EX
It is faster than Launcher Pro
I have a lot of time flashing roms and all that fun stuff so I have an idea about the possibilities going that route. Going to edit the op in regards to people adding their experience and preferences as far as flashing roms and such go. Thanks for your input. As a question Im on a custom rom now and the widets are all resizable. Are you talking about the touchwiz widgets then?
Another question would be can you access some or all of the touchwiz widgets from another launcher or do you give them up?

If you go use a third party launcher, you usually lose access to manufacturer widgets, since they work in a slightly different way from plain stock ones...
But if you go Launcher Pro Plus (it's a couple of dollars for the plus version) you get more "custom" widgets like that in return I guess it just depends what look you are going for.
So you have the handset and can confirm they are toast? Figured they would be but I haven't done touchwiz yet.

Nope, hence why I say "usually". I've been in this business for a while, but not got the SGS II yet.
I have to admit that I like Touchwiz. On SGS, I dont have a SGS2 yet. In my opinion, Samsung Glass lockscreen is a way better than the Android stock lockscreen.
At the moment I'm in love with Zeam laucher but I always come back to Touchwiz from time to time. Launcher Pro and ADW have always left me cold.
Did more reading, I see that you can change the fonts system wide. Does this carry over to a new launcher or do you lose that? Pretty nifty feature.
In my personal opinion, touchwiz 3 was dire. But after using my Galaxy S II for a few days touchwiz 4 has come a long way. I'm sticking with Touchwiz for now
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I've been playing with the demo models at the office solidly for the past 2 days, and as a Sense users for the past 2 years, I really don't like Touchwiz even in it's newest incarnation.
Probably more down to being used to how everything works in Sense though, I don't like change
Touchwiz 4 is a huge improvement over 3 in my opinion. Using it on both my SGS and SGS2 now. The new calendar widgets on the SGS2 are awesome as well Touchwiz 4 can also put folders in the applications menu now
Semi-regular flasher (ooer) - would generally flash a new rom every couple of months. Been with Android since the G1 so have a pretty good idea of what's possible.
Things you KEEP going to another launcher:
Lockscreen
Dialler (reject call with text etc)
Holding down Menu to search
Settings toggles in the notification bar
You can resize widgets with LauncherPro Plus
Things you might LOSE
Movable homescreens (most launchers do this, but not with the motion sensing twist action like touchwiz)
Customisable app tray (again, most launchers do this)
Resizable widgets (possible with LauncherPro Plus)
Customisable dock (most launchers do this)
Overall, I don't miss the touchwiz launcher, but I like some of the other features. Looks like the Samsung widgets are standard and work in other launchers too - just added Mini Paper, Ap Mobile, and Yahoo! Finance, and they seem fine.
krabman - I've changed my system font to Helvetica S (Settings -> Display -> Screen Display -> Font) and in general it looks great! Carries over to most apps too. The only downside is that it's slightly wider, so you get some buttons wrapping For example, the password "Remember / Not Now" dialog has one, I forget which . . .
Overall, ditch the launcher (I like LauncherPro, smooth for me) but enjoy the other aspects
TW4 is not as bad as many are saying. its still not nearly as good as SENSE 2.x. and I wont even attempt to compare it to the new 3.0 version. I sure hope someone port it.

Same here, playing with both the SGS and SGS2 and yes it is an improvement for sure, but I am still not liking the iphonish looks.

You pretty much mentioned what I was about to! Using launcherpro plus with widgetsoid and pure calendar widget. I have to say that launcherpro work a bit smoother on the original SGS for be, but with the upcomming update that should be fixed.
Overall, combining the best of what I had on my SGS before, with the new functions from touchwiz 4!

I hate samsung's web browser. Any way to replace it with the AOSP or CM7 one ?

I guess It's all in the title : After 10 days of using the browser I can clearly say that I don't like it (checkered effect, pixelated zoom, cant double tap to zoom, text doesn't reflow...), and even though I tried other browsers (Opera, FF, Dolphin...) my favorite is still the stock browser from Gingerbread or the slightly modified one from Cyanogenmod.
Is there any way I can replace the samsung one with one of those ?
Thanx.
You can double tap to zoom, which also simultaneously reflows the text. But yeah about everything else you're right...the checkerboard effect is annoying :/ As of yet, there's no way to replace the Samsung browser with either the CM one or the standard Gingerbread one, sorry to disappoint...
Double tapping never really worked for me : it zooms but only by like 5% so it's pretty useless. Is there a setting somewhere ?
Thanx for the answer anyway

The samsung browser smashes everythign I compare it too including the iphone 4 so I'm not sure how you can be unhappy.

The stock browser is really good and definitely out does othe rbrowsers I've used. I find dolphin to be a bit troublesome and it is aesthetically unpleasent also.
I've found the browser to be fantastic. It's the only Android phone to have smooth scrolling like the iPhone. Why has it taken so long? :/
if you switch to a different browser it wont be as smooth because it wont be hardware accelerated. the samsung stock is optimized with the GPU it seems.
that said, i played with the Infuse and it too seems hardware accelerated, showed the checkered background, yet it reflowed text just like its supposed to. double tap reflowed text. and pinch to zoom reflowed text.
why would samsung implement on one device but not the other?

Maybe it's a bug on SGS2 that'll get fixed by a firmware update. Samsung needs to be aware of this bug though.

although i do have opera 11 aswell as it has slightly easier navigation.. for quicker browsing
I would trade the smoothness of stock browser for AOSP browser in a heartbeat.
Smoothness: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
Full screen : stock (0%) AOSP (100%)
text reflow : stock (10%) AOSP (100%)
text selection: stock (100%) AOSP (90%)
window switch: stock (50%) AOSP (100%)
The window switching ui is just fancy but not practical at all. It require so many swipes and clicks to select/close windows.

I was wondering what the difference is in a touchwiz and non touchwiz rom is. What does one offer that the other doesn't?

Can The TW works on my P7510 (Chinese stock)?
Stay away from TouchWiz, is a pile of horse **** bloatware.
TouchWiz is by far the most advanced software you currently can get on a tablet. The user experience it provides is light years ahead of anything else out there, even Honeycomb 3.2.
Not only that but TouchWiz gives you access to specific hardware you cant access without it. The ability to change color temperature of the screen is a HUGE feature you can only have with toucwiz.
Here are just a few of the features you get from TouchWiz that you cant get anywhere else :
1. REAL multitasking just like in Windows. You can have TWO apps open at once on the same screen and not have to switch back and forth. There is nothing like this available in the market or in 3.2. HUGE props to Samsung for doing this.
2. Ability to change color temperature of the screen.
3. One touch wifi file access to tablet from PC <-- AWESOME
4. Sluggish menu scrolling in vanilla Honeycomb are gone! It looks like
Samsung devs used video hardware acceleration for scrolling which creates a smooth experience compared to Vanilla honeycombs laggy jumpy scrolling in may menus.
5. Awesomenew notification/settings popup menu. FAR superior to stock Honeycomb.
6. One touch screen capture button in the task bar takes a snap shot of the screen and automatically saves to a folder.
7. Lots of cool QUALITY widgets not like the junk you find in the market.
8. Motion gestures
9. Superior App Manager/ RAM manager which can run ON TOP of any app you are running.
10. BEST Music app and runs super smooth. Much better than stock H.C. or anything in the market
11. BEST Ebook reader app you can get.
12. Your tablet will run FASTEST with touchwiz. Samsung is using hardware acceleration for menus like Apple. Stock HC uses software rendering which is why its so slow and laggy. You cant get hardware acceleration if you dont have TouchWiz. No the Devs here will not be able to add it as its beyond their capabilities.
The list goes on and on. TouchWiz is simply a superior experience than stock HC. I would even dream of using my tab without it. Your tablet is incomplete and missing features to access hardware if you dont have TouchWiz.
I am really curious about changing the color temperature. How do you do it?

Thanks 5th, that is exactly what I was looking for. This is my first tablet, and Im only coming from the HTC evo. And from that I came from the HTC hero. So Im still pretty green to this.
Is it worth swapping the kernel out? I know and Im sure you know as well, doing that on android phones will help out a lot. But what about on these tabs? IS that VooDoo what its made out to be?
touchwiz is pretty cool, but the gmail and calendar sucks big time compared to the original honeycomb version. how the heck can i see week view NORMALLY like honeycomb calendar instead of zooming with pinch and zoom. c'mon!

I respect your choice, related to TouchWiz. I enjoy vanilla builds of Honeycomb and I think TouchWiz removes the Android authenticity. There is a reason why devs like PhantomHacker release their ROM's cleaned from the bloatware Samsung adds. I'm looking forward to install his vanilla 3.2 ROM on my P7510.

Love the RAzr

new to RAZR after 3 years Of samsung Touchwiz UI.
Have to say this, the motoblur light is incredible to me. I have never loved a UI so much before. Having had AOSP gingerbread and touchwiz gingerbread, i can't believe this is still gingerbread. I have no desire for ICS anymore. My friend has a Nexus with ICS and I find it boring compared to this.
Have to ask, how is this light? It seems like a complete gingerbread makeover.
My favorite features:
1. cool toggle for mute on lock screen.
2. Favorite contacts widgets with pull down
3. Social networking combo with better comment support than facebooks own app
4. swiping pages transition glow.
5. Honeycomb like resizing, drag and drop to screen.
6. Folder groupings and animation for it.
7. messaging looks like iphone.
8. MUSIC APP. wow. This is just amazing. (internet radio, podcasts, my own stored music, music store). The way it automatically downloads lyrics and shows them as the song goes. etc....... ++++++
9. clearing out individual notifications.
10. Weather widget
How is this motoblur light again? wow, what a phone!
-New overwhelmed user.
Having used Touchwiz and stock Gingerbread, as well (as well as CM GB and several others), I agree completely. I never thought I would say this, but Blur is better than stock. Hell has frozen over.
Blur=root and put stock rom
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA App
I too am enjoying Blur on my Razr. Love the Favorite Contacts and Weather widgets. The Dock looks gorgeous.
I came from the Eris with sense. Tried every ROM possible with many different launchers, but have no pressing urge to switch besides backing up my homescreen setup which isn't a big deal since I'm not flashing ROMS every week.
I actually don't mind the blur either. I run adw though because i don't like the blur icons and like the swipe up-down feature of adw. Blur runs smoother but that's to be expected.
I also like the Blur and stock widgets are actually usable. I especially like stock corporate apps like corporate email, tasks and calendar. I use it on daily basis to accept meeting etc.
I saw several reviews that said this is the first phone without blur. They were either really wrong or misunderstood this phone.
