[Q] coming from HTC phones, really confused!!! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

on htc phones, we needed to flash baseband, radio, roms separately and the dev clearly states that so and so radio/baseband is recommended for the above rom,...
my question is, in here there is no such recommendations from the devs,...
so does the rom for example omega contain both radio and baseband?? so we just need to flash the rom and we are done???

Which HTC phone you had, may I know?
I thought there baseband also means radio.
Yes, you for S3 you have recovery, baseband/radio, and from
You can flash them separately just like in HTC.
Any rom package can contain rom plus one or both of the other (or none, just rom)
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app

yea sure my last phone which i used for custom roms was HTC sensation,...
sorry i mean the firmware thing,...
so i just flash the latest Omega rom or any other rom and there is no need to flash any new firmwares??? coz the OP doesnt give much info about the recommended firmware to be installed,...

Yep!
And if Omega rom include a modem (radio) that does not work well with your carrier, just flash another modem

ok mate,... thanks for the info,...

[Q] Help me select ROMS

hello all,
Before I being, i searched a bit in this forum and in web. But the questions i have still are not answered.
I on KE2 stock ROM. i have an unbranded SGSII. I have rooted using steps mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
I want to install any of the custom Roms or the newer ROMS mainly because the battery usage sucks. with some hour music and calls battery get drained easily.
I dont mind updating to latest stock ROM also as long as it solves the problem.
Kies dose not offer me an upgrade and its also grayed out for some reason
Here is my SGSII specs
Code:
Product Code: GT-I9100LKADBT (From RegEdit)
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXXKE2
Baseband: I9100XXKDJ
If I have some problem, I want to revert back to Stock rom before giving it to Samsung. I have also ordered a USB Jig. It should be on the way now. So i can reset the counter as well.
Before flashing, I want to know what all i should do. Is it just fine If i flash the firmware file? Also in Samfirmware i see something called pit files.
can anyone help me in flashing the correct rom?
thank you
All Custom ROM's give detailed installation instructions in the first couple of posts.
For what it's worth, having tried a number of different ROM's, VillainRom 1.4 has the best battery for me. 2 days with moderate use.
+ Villian rom but read and understand the instructions before you start .
jje
Cognition S2 is a good rom, full instructions for flashing.
If you look in the android development section, theres also a thread with all stock firmwares, kernals and tutorials for flashing
thank you all.
I was wondering about how to revert back in case of some problem. Also do I need to take care something about the baseband etc?
I am kind of new so thats what makes me tensed! I dont want to screw up the mobile.
Don't worry, once you have USB jib, you can reset Odin flash counter and this is a safe way to rescue you in case of brick.
In terms of baseband, ke4 or kf2 are the best ones. Kf2 kernel + kf2 base band is a good combination. You can try many ones and choose by yourself.
On xda, there are all stock firmware to rollback if needed.
Take a look at the stock rom and branded roms post in Dev section find your phone and download a copy of the rom.
That can be flashed back via Odin to original state wiping any root and stock roms .

How about ROM Manager ? i read that It can install ROMS over air
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-koushikdutta-rommanager-nptD.aspx
Don't use that as far as know. My kernel wasn't supported and it took me days before my recovery mode was working as I wanted. Maybe it works with other kernels, but with my bad experience thus far I don't install that again.

Thanks. Then i will not
Installing rom manager is not an issue... Very few custom rom are compatible with this. Afaik Cognition rom is one of them.

You think I can install ROMS with this? no more Odin?
No this is a little bit more complicated. You need a rom compatible with this like cognition seemed to add. The main idea is to have a rom compatible with rom manager and this will allow you to change to another rom compatible with this. Unfortunately, there are not so many custom rom... Perhaps sicopat's one?
I justed wanted to say that rom manager is not dangerous to install and even to launch.
OK Thank you,
But I am still confused If i need to update the modem etc. Let me do some more search
You can upgrade modem version by Odin flash mode separately to the rest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Just download a modem.bin file or gets it from a complete firmware by unzip.
Put modem.bin into phone area of Odin and start accordingly of normal flash processing.
Thanks bgn9000
MY whole worry is whether to update modem or not. I dont want to mess with my phone as i think there is no downgrade.
Looks like I have to invest more time in understanding this flashing

[Q] Best ICS rom if your going to flash a T MOBILE rom

Like the topic says, I have an AT&T note, but T Mobile service. I recently (last night) found the wonderful work by several XDA members of which they supply us with a flashable zip that contains a radio that will give T Mo 4G data speeds.
I forget which one I finally used (there's the SGH-T989 KID radio, VKL1 radio and one called blaze). There is also a build.prop file that completely rendered my device useless (requiring an OS re-install).
I also have a few ICS modems, again the "KID" or is it "K1D" Im not sure... that, the "Blaze" version and one from the carrier "Telus". I also saw a Rodgers version floating around somewhere. I think that was really for the Galaxy S2 but it works with our Note
Anyway I am really missing ICS, I have 2.3.6 now. I need to know what is a good modem radio to flash if Im going ICS. Also whats a good ICS rom (keeping in mind the flashing of the T Mo radio)...
thanks
Roms and modems are interchangeable, meaning you can use whichever modem you want, on whichever Rom you want.
The blaze modem is what you want to use for t-mobile
Also the apn settings for t-mobile would probably be beneficial

So it doesn't matter if the Rom is gingerbread based but the modem is from an ICS build? And Vise/Versa...?
Nope

Can I flash a different rom than the current one if have?

Hey, I was wondering if i can flash a different rom than the current one if have. If yes, then what would be the best one to flash because the current one I have gets absolutely no updates and I want to flash one that gets the updates the day they are released or shortly after. Also am I able to flash it without have to do a wipe data/factory reset?? I’m new to this if you can’t already tell so as much help/advice as possible would be greatly appreciated ;p
Current version :
AP : i9300UBBLG2
CP : i9300UBLG2
CSC : i9300UUBBLG2
I was thinking about flashing an XXALE8 or XXBLFB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
Check the link above for all the help you need, no need to wipe data if you are flashing to another stock Rom.

Hey
I flashed paranoid android 2.13 and have to say it's awesome and then flashed siyah kernel on it and now my phone is just a pleasure lol! I'm new to this whole thing too but I found it easy to flash the rom and kernel over clockworkmod recovery. Install goo manager and that will give ya the updates which u can flash over without wiping data. Unfortunately initially you will have to wipe to flash a new rom.

[Q] stock rom

Good day guys! would just want to ask you about the stock rom.
I have already rooted my galaxy s3 and installed miui rom on it, and for no reason i would like to revert to the stock rom. But the stock rom that was installed was the one from greece. The phone i'm using is factory unlocked and is not associated with any carrier.
Question:
If I wish to restore it to the stock rom, is it necessary to get a rom from greece? or is it okay to download a rom from the country that i am in right now?
If you have no intention to send back for warranty claims, any stock rom will do. Else get the stock rom for Greece. Use CheckFus apps to find your firmware.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
It should be fine, or more compatible to run the stock rom for the country you are based in. For warranty purposes, obviously flashing back the original Greek version would be advised.
You could just flash the original Greek firmware, then flash the modem for the corresponding country you are in.
Hope it helps!

new to the forum and device

Hi, just bought an og ,coming from HTC phone. There r some new things it looks like. What is a EFS ? Back up EFS partition ? I'm gonna used the my att og on straight talk , any things I should watch out for ? Should stay 100 % stock until service is activated? I'm looking for a near stock stable optimized rom, any to recommend ? Which kernel is good for it ? Htcs have hboot , it looks like lgs use different things , how do I go around flashing radios ? Excuse me for throwing out tons of noob questions , gonna start somewhere
0 help lol
Welcome. There is a zip file that you put on your external SD card somewhere in the optimus g forums that will backup your efs partition.
Edit: I found it for you if you haven't had any luck finding it. Also.. The efs supposedly holds your imei number and stuff.

Ic, so how would EFS be deleted ? always just had CDMA phones, never heard of ESNs deleted by mistake. Are radios to be flashed in recovery too ? My HTC flashes radios in fastboot.

It is real, there are a lot of hard bricks because of it, look in the Optimus 3D P920 forum, a lot people lost their IMEI and couldn't get it going. And yes, you can flash different radios
whats a very stable and optimized near stock rom for this phone ? what kernel can go with it ?

MysteryEmotion's eg8 ROM is the newest and may have the best chance of being actively maintained in the future. He also builds his own kernel with tweaks.
Ic, what version android is MysteryEmotion's eg8 ROM ? Has anyone tried houstonn's Stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean LG-E970 At&t ? I don't need the latest version android or anything , mostly seeking for stability and everything work.

Mystery's eg8 is based on 20j 4.1.2 stock with addons and enhancements. I think Houstonn's is a port from another OG that was released with jellybean before AT&T got the update.
Can you please clarify a bit? Do you mean stock LG or stock Google/Android.
Stock LG: Either go with MysteryEmotion's eg8 Or SnowJBLeaopard's SnowJB -almost forgot SlickRom, that is super debloated, but not really to my liking. (forgot who posted it)
Stock Google/Android: Either Shelnutt's Unofficial 10.1 Or houstonn's Vanilla Rootbox. The latter has a lot of "bells and whistles" while the former is basically stock. Also should mention TuxAttack's Beanstalk. Also a lot of bells and whistles though.

Personally I would go with dvhexers CM 10.1.2, and his included kernel is quite good. This is stock android/CM though, with a bit of searching and patience you can run LG Home on top of this, with the original weather/clock and calendar.
i.e.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198225
So then you have the best of both. Too many options for you not to get out there any try a few. But @dvhexers CM10.1 I think was perfectly stable.
I am using the JellyBean ROM. I have been on it for about a month now and haven't had any issues that wasn't caused by me
Though, other than that I suggest mysteryemotionz
okay, I'll probably go with ME eg8 and his V6.1 kernel for 4.1.2. just being on the safe side , should i flash a JB radio for this rom ? if yes, do i flash in RECOVERY ? i have found a radio called CWM-ATTJB-Radio, is this the right one ? I am being carefully about this because my HTC flash radios in Hboot with PG86IMG files... as far as flashing kernel, do u guys recommend flashing with Flash Image GUI for this phone ? and is wiping Dalvik always needed for flashing kernels for this phone ? i thanked everyone that helped.

Sorry, for some reason I called the ROM 'Beanstalk' Jellybean.
It was ported from the infuse 4G. I have tried just about every ROM and this one is my favorite.
Maybe it is just me, but again I haven't had any real issue with it. I did have a kernel crash from MysteryEmotionz kernel though. I then flashed Smoochas and all is good.
The crash occurred whenever I tried to run a QR code app. (any QR code app)

ME's eg8 is modified stock, it should come with his kernel already. Yes the radio's flash in CWM as zips, you can manually push with ADB/Fastboot commands, but why bother.
What are you referring to by "Flash image GUI" ? If you mean "clockwork mod recovery" or "TWRP" then yes. Once you download the freegee app from the market, it will give you the option for either, choose which ever you like more, personally I prefer CWM. Yes always wipe dalvik cache after you flash a kernel, so it can recreate the DEX files for that particular kernels methods of execution.

Flash image GUI is an image flashing app from the market. MiRaGe, known for his rom and kernel works for Optimus V and HTC Evo V 4G, recommends flashing his kernels with this app. I have been using it to flash kernels. So i was just wondering if this would work with kernels for this phone , i guess every phone is different.

I'm not familiar with those apps, and don't recall seeing them mentioned here at all. FWIW, I personally avoid any apps that flash things. They may make things convenient, but I've seen too many issues caused on too many devices by apps that flash stuff.
Just read the relevant threads to learn about what you are doing, and flash manually from recovery. That way, you're in control of what you're doing. Less chance of snafus caused by incompatibilities...
i am in complete stock . rg8 is 700 mb ?.... most roms i use for my HTC are around 150..
Thanks everyone for all the help. Now I'm running eg8 , everything seems fine execept the first time I took a picture had a very strange crash. The screen went blank and codes started rolling up the screen , it went on for about 3 minutes then phone restarted itself ...
