I ordered a Softbank Tytn for my buddy and i noticed the IMEI number on the box and on the device do not match. The seller was the one to unlock the phone, so my guess is once it was unlocked, the unlocker made a copy of an unlocked phone (of the firmware) on to the new softbank.
I've searched the forum only to find SIM Changing tools for other phones but ours. I know the IEMI number can be changed back, but does anyone have leads to how this can be done?

Changing an IMEI is possible, but illegal in many countries.
I'm trying to understand why you want to change it though. Are you having some kind of trouble with the device and/or service?
Look where your sim goes or the battery on your phone and the IMEI should be there, if it is different than the code actually on the phone or not (press '*#06#' and press go or send)
Worry about the phone not the box.
You need to be careful the IMEI number may be right on the phone and the box wrong. That is if your 'seller' opened 2 boxes and then unlocked them both and put them in the wrong box, the other person may have your box and their own IMEI (as is on your box). Or they just tossed the wrong box.
I have not heard of any unlocking that changes the IMEI only an IMEI hack.

Ibrahim, I sold you this phone and I bought it from CellularArena a few weeks earlier. There is no problem with using that phone with the changed IMEI. It is too bad that CellularArena buys their unlocked X01HT with that method of unlocking but there is no problem to use that phone.

has their phone stolen or lost reports the IMEI so it cannot be used too easily. The IMEI get's blacklisted, the users are all pooched.

I also heard that many X01HT sold in the grey market don't have matching IMEI.... Don't know why but it's perhaps really due to their method of unlocking.

Yeah.. this is true but in Canada anyways, Rogers and Fido (now Rogers) do not blacklist IMEI. Blacklisting is risky business especially with blacklisting IMEI of devices that were not purchased through official channels. If it was so simple, a person could call in and blacklist random phones (albeit terribly random).
If the HongKong seller of these phones has done this same procedure with every X01HT they sold, there must be hundreds with the same IMEI, but have you seen anyone come here and say my new phone is blacklisted? No.
It's too bad that the unlock was done that way, but I don't think it will have any negative effect for any of these users, unless they go to a country where that IMEI has been blacklisted. It is also possible that the IMEI that *#06# returns is not actually the IMEI that is reported to the network either (as is the case with many sony ericsson phones where the IMEI is stored in 2 places on the device [OTP/GDFS]).
Would this not also impact the owner's ability to use BlackBerry Connect?
As part of the registration it asks for the PIN and IMEI. If someone has used the IMEI then that would preclude the second (or third, or fourth...) from using it with BBC.

But this doesnt happen with blackberries.
I've verified the IMEI off my friend's phone and compared it to the sticker at the back and the numbers do not match. So is there a way to change this number to the one on the box?

Sounds like you had purchased a stolen phone , if the number on the back of the phone doesnt match the number the phones software display's.

Actually I though they explained it very well. Whom ever unlocked these phones is lazy, they cloned one unlocked phone and then copied it to the rest IEMI and all.
Quick Question: Does the IMEI when you press *#06# match either the box or the sticker inside the battery compartment of the phone?
If *#06# IMEI matches the sticker on the phone then why care about the sticker on the box, they just were stupid putting phones back in the boxes.
On the other hand, if you the *#06# IMEI doesn't match the sticker in the battery compartment then you do have a phone with a changed IMEI. If you live or use the phone in a country where changing the IMEI is illegal (who doesn't anymore) then I'd not want to use it simply because if there ever is an issue you will be held responsible.

I wonder how a ROM can be cloned without the IMEI ... ?
The 0182 loader which is now not yet unlockable . A fail safe method is to clone a image from a unlocked DOPOD rom (of course , it still brick your X01HT if you smashed the IC) .
That explains why most of the X01HT sold in HK with a unmatch IMEI . The box and the phone itself has the matched IMEI (I consider it as a new , original one) , however , the *#06# will not show the matched IMEI .
I would like to know it possible to modifiy the IMEI as well , however , I can still accept my phone with a unmatched IMEI .

As of now, its not possible to change the IMEI. It's also, in MOST countries of the world, illegal to do so.
The ROM itself is not cloned. It is the Qualcomm baseband chip that is cloned (it contains the IMEI and radio). When it is duplicated the IMEI is also cloned. The phone is now unlocked (in nvm) and is ready to take any rom.

The reason is because the phone was not, at the time, unlockable any other way (that they knew of). Imei changes as result of above post.

Thanks very much for your update ... So , they are actually taking out the Qualcomm chip out from the PCB ?
If so , isn't that a good chance to reconnect the GPS connection ? (I remember that in the HERMES GPS project it mentioned that the GPS switch is grounded so the GPS is malfunction) Is it possible to connect the pin the enable it ? Or still lack of the related components ?

OK this is weird. Yesterday I noticed that I have different IMEI when I check with *#06# from one that is under the battery. The IMEI that is shown with *#06# has xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx01(17 digits: ), and under the battery the IMEI is exactly the same xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, but without the last two digits 01. How is this possible?

If its been to repair they will have swapped out the mainboard which effectively means its a different phone.
I bought it used (few days ago), but I can see that it has been in repairs... So what IMEI is correct one now?

I realize the question has been asked several times over but I was wondering if I had missed anything and what my options are at this point.
I recently bought a new Galaxy S3 from eBay, the phone was described as having a "problem calling out" but the seller promised everything else works perfectly. The item was sold as "faulty" in eBay. So the phone was sold for around £250.
I followed the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021 (making sure to backup my EFS folder) and found that an original EFS folder was missing a file called ".nv_data" when I looked for it with Root Explorer, however there was a ".nv_data.bak" file. So I tried that file instead and continued with the guide. However the IMEI number is still the generic one (004999010640000/01) after I rebooted it.
Is there any other way I can restore the original IMEI number?
(This isnt a clone)

I've tried EFS Pro, same problem and I tried the link about replacing .nv_data also I cant find the IMEI anywhere on the handset. I took the battery out and there's nothing there.

Then you are going to have to use it as not a phone .
No original backed up EFS No original IMEI .
You cannot recover whats not there and i suspect a phone that is missing the IMEI sticker is more than just faulty .

In order to recover legally you need orignal IMEI number.
But you do not have Phone imei or serial number, I think even samsung service centre cannot recover it.
Sorry m8,but that phones original imei is reported stollen.

they removed the sticker on the back,so its almost impossible to recover imei except through samsung.they do it with the phone-id.

PAP is launch event phone or shop demo model and the PCB has RF components missing, so you will never get a signal even if the IMEI is fixed.
PAP probably stands for Prototype AP.
OP in which case i would take it up with Ebay as not faulty as description but a non working demo model .

The item was sold as faulty, so you have little recourse for returning it. You were told what you were buying.
Your only hope is contacting Samsung, who might swap out the main board for you, for a price.

A faulty phone is a working phone with a problem, in this case it had a problem dialing out. This is a display model, so it technically could never dial out, and it wasn't a problem. He should return it and get his money back.

It was sold WITH the stated problem so the OP knew it couldn't call out when he bought it. It was also marked as a faulty device in the sale. There is no recourse here.
Lesson here, never buy a "faulty phone" in the hopes of fixing it... Not unless its for fun....

The person never stated its a display model, only that it has a calling out problem.
Selling a car with a faulty engine is different from selling a car with no engine at all and saying it has an ignition problem.

I purchased Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100. Now:
IMEI on the device matches the backside sticker as well as the box.
Device information application from Google Play/Marketplace verifies that it is S2, also all the device information like the CPU/GPU specifications.
AnTuTu benchmark verifies it is S2 indeed, scores 9000+ on Android 2.3.5
Is above enough for verification & confirmation that this is indeed a genuine device?
Someone raised my suspicion over the device so upon checking I found that the SD card slot on this S2 is right under the SIM card slot (and no marking about it, that it is present there). Most of the International version S2s I have found online so far have the SD card slot separately to it's left side. You can see that the battery placement is different too (contacts are to the different side). I am attaching a picture, removed IMEI information - self explanatory so any help about this will be appreciated.
Is there anyway to confirm IMEI of this device officially from Samsung? For example, Apple iPhone and any other device can be checked for Warranty on their website using the IMEI number/Serial number.

Go here: http://www.nobbi.com/tacquery.php, and look up the first 8 digits of your IMEI (first two is the Reporting Body ID, and the next six is the Type Allocation Code). Now, whether you trust this or not is another question - IMEI structure is a public knowledge, and can be faked...
Personally, I have never seen a picture of such S2 hardware design. Looks weird, I would also be scratching my head...

That is strange... But when you validate the IMEI, does it actually show you the manufacturer and the model? It should (see attached pics -- the TAC lookup and the IMEI validation).

Hmm, that it does not... for TAC database it says, "No entrys found matching your query" and when I check validity of IMEI. I get the following:

Unknown TAC is definitely suspicious, because it's supposed to correspond to a specific make and model of the phone...

You are correct. I purchased another Samsung phone and checked the TAC/IMEI on the site you gave and everything for it shows up. I returned S-II to the shop I purchased it from.
I wanted to ask, are IMEI numbers in a sequence? Because I noticed that the lot of these Samsung S-II's, which he was selling had the IMEI numbers in a series/sequence i.e. the phone I had ended with 082 and I saw another which had the same IMEI number as the first, except ending in 097.

In simple terms, yes, they are sequential. IMEI structure is pretty simple, and it's a public knowledge. You can easily find a complete info on it. The first part (8 digits) is the Reporting Body ID, followed by the Type Allocation and Assembly Code. Then goes the 6-digit Serial Number of the device, and the last digit is a check (a rudimentary validation method). As you can imagine, serial numbers for the same device model on the same assembly line will indeed be sequential...

I believe the motherboard has its own generic imei number. Youll see this generic imei number instead of the shipped imei when the efs partition is formatted or corrupt. Meaning the imei that you see on your phone now is probably one that has been placed by the service center. Although what I don't understand is that why wouldn't they just input the imei no. that's mentioned underneath the battery instead.

Here in Turkey you have to register all imei numbers to the carriers in order to use your phone. i think the generic imei wasnt registered so they needed a registered one to make it work. For the serial you mentioned about underneath the battery, i think they needed my old efs backup to replace and since they dont have that either.... but i also think and just poped up in my head right now, my old board was working fine but the sound card. they could have taken my efs from it. and that will be the first think im gonna say them on monday morning...

That could explain why they added some other imei. If I'm not mistaken in Turkey they usually give you 2 weeks to register your imei before suspending it? In that case I would advice you to push the service center to place your old imei number and register your phones actual imei with the network. At least so that you don't face difficulty with updating through KIES or any other situation.

yes you are right about two weeks. my old imei number was registered. but there are some answers i need
1) what is corrupted efs? if i temper with the orijinal imei even placing my old one instaed, does the phone thinks corrupted anyway?
2) if that's so, im gonna tell them to register the new imei number that comes with the board. my present imei that im using now when i searched it from internet it seems 8600 not 9300 but also registered too.

Its is the EFS folder that contains the IMEI.

Yes and its illegal .
The service centre should sort all the IMEI stuff not you .
