Just bought USB OTG cable samsung original Model: ET-R205UBEGSTD, mfg date 22/5/2012.
It displays my pen 16gb usb NTFS drive after i had installed siyah kernel and Oi filemanager. However when i connected it to the external 500GB WD HDD it just powered it on and didn't show as mounted or anything. After waiting sometime i removed it.
I dont know if the power requirement of the drive is too much for SIII or what but now the external drive is not even being recognized by my PC. Hope it wasn't screwed by S3.
Anyone tried OTG with external HDD?
Update: It fked up my external HDD and it's not being recognized by my pc or any other device. Shows as unrecognized USB device. Took it apart but the WD proprietory connection at the back will not allow me to connect it directly to PC. I lost about 250GB worth of data on it.
I've a friend who has tried this, he said he wasn't able to see the drive via his phone either.
He has siyah kernel and it is ntfs, but no dice. However his hard drive still works afaik.
I know that connecting drives works as I've seen it done but I've never tried it.
What do you think was the cause?

best chance is with usb 3 harddisks as they need only a third of the power (vs usb2) to boot.

The usb pen drive does work, even NTFS formated 16gb one.
I'm just stumped at SIII screwing up my externel WD drive. Now don't want to try my other 250 or 1TB 3.0 version on it.

Yes i have 1TB usb3 but dont want to take anymore chances, already lost 250+gb worth of data
If anyone else has tried it pls do share.
Also how to make XB360 usb controller work on it as i've connected it but need an app to recognize it.
I tried many flash drives, all worked properly, I even tried a wireless mouse and it worked instantly
however, I tried two WD 500 GB HDs , both weren't recognized by the phone, but they worked normally after that when I connected them to my PC, hopefully your data can be salvaged somehow !
I''ve a Samsung S2 1tb. Works fine ntfs stock Rom and siyah

USB3-specification is designed to require less power for the protocol and communication chip. However the devices (USB-sticks or in this case hard drives) are not affected by that; the spindle motor still drains a huge amount of power and usually goes well above the specified 0.5Amp of USB2 during start-up.
USB-Harddrives may cause damage to the phone's motherboard due to them requiring more power than the whole phone itself takes.
It's noteworthy that, while compatible with the USB2 protocol, USB-OTG is specifically NOT compatible with devices except if explicitly stated as compatible. Regardless most devices just work.
I'd recommend only using flash drives (since they need only a small amount of power) or powered hard drives, respectively unpowered ones on a powered hub.
The phone's (Linux) exFat-implementation is kinda broken, so if your harddrive was FAT64 it might have caused partition table corruption.
The corresponding Windows tools should however usually be able to at least partially recover the filesystem.
NTFS, as from the NTFS-3g project, should work fine.

On the phone, however I'd recommend doing it over adb since typing in the phone's terminal emulator is cumbersome and speed is the key here =)
Dmesg reports the last X messages given by the kernel which includes USB and filesystems.
Type 'dmesg > /sdcard/log.otg.txt' (no quotes) but DO NOT PRESS ENTER
Plug in the USB-OTG adapter without anything attached.
Hit Enter as soon as it's connected to run the command.
Now type 'dmesg > /sdcard/log.mount.txt' (no quotes) and again DO NOT PRESS ENTER
Plug in the hard drive / Usb stick and wait 2 seconds, then hit Enter
Attach both logfiles here so we can see whaat your phone actually does and what goes wrong.

I managed to recover most data from a broken harddisk after putting it in the freezer overnight. I couldn't believe it but it really did magic.

Don't know if I can do this or not, but I just started this thread looking for some specific info re connecting the largest external HDD to SG SIII without an external power source for the HDD (i.e., the largest HDD you have successfully connected directly to your S3 using an OTG cable). i connected a WD Essential SE portable hdd (1TB) to the Tab 10.1 via the usb adaptor and a powered usb hub. The drive is formatted to FAT32.
When powered up, the Tab shows usb storage connected but after awhile it becomes usb device unexpectedly removed. I am not able to access the portable drive at all.
Anyone can advise if there is anything I can do to make it work?
My Tab is 3G version with Android 3.1 with baseband P7500UBKG6.
Thanks.
me too...
any solution guys?
I presume you need to have a seperate power supply since the tab seems to refuse to use high-power usb devices all together.
I tried connecting my disk dock and that worked fine(uses a normal power supply on the side)
got it to work by using Broodcomb ROM and using [email protected] manager to format the harddisk to FAT32, not sure which one cause it to work. The setup is the same as before.

Hello,
I can't mount NTFS USB external hard disk, but an NTFS USB KEY is working ????, on the micro usb with the adaptor ARCHOS USB microUSB, is it normal?
Thanks.
NTFS is currently only read only and it doesn't like to mount properly. You could reformat as FAT32 but it won't any file larger than 4GB.
The best option is to format as EXT3 with EASEUS Partition Master then use a program like EXT2FSD or EXT2IFS to allow windows to read the drive correctly.
Also if for some reason you want to keep NTFS you may have to reformat before it will mount.
As far as a cable goes, I always use the 3G stick slot. Works a lot better and I don't have the usb adaptor.

I connect the mini usb cable from my hdd directly to the fullsize 3G slot, then I turn 3g stick on in the settings. It's very important that you have "3G stick" checkmarked in Wireless & Networks otherwise you won't get power to your drive and nothing will mount.
which drive
Ok butt which drive you use?
I use a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 640GB if that's what you're wondering.
USB host functionality
Hello to all, and best wishes for 2012 year.
Could you precise which firmware version you're running, when you have success to mount a 'USB host' peripheral ?
I tried many USB keys (6 keys, from 2 GB up to 16 GB), with different formats ( NTFS , FAT, FAT32, ext3 ) but without success. The same with a 250 GB external HDD (having its own PSU) using NTFS.
Originally, I tested with version 3.2.78 , and since this morning, 3.2.79
Still the same : Nothing detected when pluging the USB peripheral
The 3G interface is activated in settings. The tablet has been rebooted a lot of times, but.... nothing !
Any idea ?
Thanks.
Plug it into a windows PC. If it needs drivers, then your out of luck, sorry

But do they need to install drivers when they are first plugged into the PC?
Sent from my ARCHOS 80G9 using xda premium
Hard to be sure, but all of them had already been used on PC previously, so may be the drivers have been installed in the past ?
@Doume59249 Okay some drives have hidden paritions that may interfere with their operation. Nothing is special with my tablet. It's a 101 classic with 1.0ghz processor bought before December. I currently run 3.2.78 rooted but it has also worked on every stock firmware prior.
Getting back to the hidden partitions. If your jumpdrive/hdd autoruns some bloatwear program or shows a cd drive when you mount it then you probably have a hidden partition.
Put your jumpdrive/hdd in the computer and hit:
start>run>diskmgmt.msc
Back up anything important you have on the drive, there's a chance it may format with this method....although it probably shouldn't, you should reformat if you have any problems. MAKE SURE YOU FIND YOUR JUMPDRIVE VOLUME.
If you see any partitions other than the main one, right click the smaller partition>delete.
Then higlight the primary/larger partition and right click>extend
Go through the wizard it should default to the maximum avaliable space.
Verify that it is fat32. Remember, if you will NOT be able to store files larger than 4GB with fat32 so I recommend to try this with a small jumpdrive and not an hdd.
Enable 3G stick in your settings and try it in your tablet again. Boot with the jumpdrive plugged in if for some reason it doesn't want to mount. If it doesn't work then maybe Archos has handycapped some of their tablets. It could also be a physical problem with your port. I'm really not sure. Hope this helped.
Thanks for suggestions
I have tested different ways, to be sure to have only 1 partition on USB medias
- Using diskmgmt.msc under Windows Vista Pro to remove partitions and format into FAT32
- Using fdisk on Linux to remove all partitioning before to insert key into Vista, to format it into FAT32
I also tried with many USB keys
I've rebooted my Archos 101 G9 (using 3.2.78 too ), with the key inserted
But no success.....
I think the 3G location is'nt available on my tablet ( no led blinking when inserting USB keys into slot )
Probably a hardware problem : I'll try to contact Archos support about that
Question : Do you have any led blinking, when you insert a running jumpdrive ?
One more time, many thanks for your help
ciao, very very quick test using "3g port" with Archos 101 g9 8gb, 3.2.79 rooted (thank you coolkid602008 for the trick here micro usb host cable is difficult to find in physical stores).
usb Nilox 4gb fat32 -> obviously it works
usb Kingston 8gb ntfs -> system sees but it does not mount
2.5 wd hd (500 gb) ntfs (single usb cable, data + power) -> Strangely it works!
all of these with single primary partition.
next step (when and if I have time) is try a very old creative webcam ct6840 with Omni Vision 7620 chip (I have an old box full of them at work...) that has always been recognized in any linux distribution. ciao
Thanks, hitman72
Finally, the Archos support suggest me to return the tablet, because this should be operational, and a second problem occurred :
When waking up the tablet, the screen becomes 'crazy' : A lot of breaks into applications, the 'back' button blinking alone, without any control. All the tablet becomes uncontrollable... Probably a bad contact on screen.
So, finally, I put it back to reseller, for a return to Archos.
I'll post here feedback after return.
Thanks to all for your help

not counting the use of wireless keyboard and mouse. The usb host cable seems pretty useless. The biggest problem is not being able to use 2.5 western digital hd with ntfs primary partition (it works with 3g port...). from terminal (I'm a linux newbie) I tried to mount it but I was not able to use it. ciao
I've been playing with USB support for a while as well. I've managed to get almost every device I own to work. To get the back to work, I need to turn on the 3G (to get power).
Rosewill SD Reader (Both - Some times requires mutliple insertions)
Logitech Keyboard and Mouse (Both - Unify)
El-cheapo game control (back only and required a USB hub)
USB3 external NTFS 640GB (back - read only)
Fail: i-Rocks MultiReader
One of the tricks I've seen is to insert a USB hub between the devices. I have no idea why, but sometimes this helps (although it sucks power). Sometimes I have to reboot to make it work. Another trick is turning the 3G Stick on and off.

Finally, I'll forgot this tablet as soon as possible :
After 1 month of patience, they finally call me to propose a replacement
Being at shop, I required to open the new one box, to test it before leave...
And it has exactly the same problem : The tablet works alone, without any user intervention ( popup windows, notifications , switch to application list... )
The same false-contact in tactile screen than my first one. Unbelievable !
So, I required to have my money back, and they agree.
Few hours later, I bought an Acer Iconia Tab A200, and it works perfectly
You can connect any NTFS peripheral on its USB host dedicated port, and you can read/write on it, without restrictions. All USB keys tested worked fine, that's all !
Hello, I am having a problem getting my galaxy tab 10.1 to recognize a usb flash drive I have connected via an adapter. I know it works because it detected a wireless mouse I connected to it, and it shows up when I use dmesg or lsusb in the terminal. The thing is that none of the file explorers I've used (Es, Astro) are able to detect the files I have on it. The usb drive is formatted to fat32; would it be more likely to detect it if I formatted it to ext3 or ext4?
Maybe you need to use this?

So I recently bought a Samsung 64 GB sdcard for my s4. I'm coming from a 32gb. I'm looking to do links2sd and swapper. Plus storage on it.
I'm having problems moving stuff to the new card. I was able move some stuff but when I insert card into phone it says it's blank. I've done this several times and each time it does the same thing.
I partitioned the card but my question is what should I partition to? Fat32? I'm assuming android keeps formatting the card when it's installed for some reason. Maybe wrong partition type?
Thanks
I dont have a definate reply on this but I know in the past when you insert a card into a phone, the phone has an option to partition it and install the needed stuff....I dont think you can take a blank card..install stuff on it with your computer, then insert it into the phone and expect it to see the stuff you transferred...
Try putting in the card (into the phone), then hooking the phone up to your pc and transfer stuff that way!
Ok. I can try that. But what should the partitions be? I want to do Linux swap and link2sd. Idk what the main data partition should be....fat, fat32, idk which one.

I believe link2sd required 2 partitions on the sdcard. You need to use a third party software on your PC (partition magic etc..) and use this to create 2 partitions:
* Partition 1 (FAT) is for a normal storage like copy/save files between your phone and pc
* Partition 2 (FAT32, ext2,ext3,ext4) is for moving your apps/data from phone internal storage to this partition. Your PC will not able to see this partition.
Due to limitation of FAT32 or FAT you limited to max of only 32gb, by using a third party software on your pc like formatfat32 could over come this limitation. I use linux software called "Gpart" http://gparted.org/download.php ,since Gpart is a linux it won't run on Windows, you need to download the iso image then use imburner to burn the iso to cd, then change your PC to first boot from CD instead of Harddisk. A second method is use Windows free software called Mini tool partition wizard home edition http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html. or third option is using Android parition tool here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sylkat.AParted

How did you brick your phone? About the partition your sdcard, it's not the card it's the mini tool software, it's unreliable. If you have time use Gparted and you should see everything is working as expected. Use the linke to download Gparted iso image, then burn the image to cd, this will create a linux OS on the CD, put the cd in your pc, reboot then hit F12, you should see a boot menu, just select boot from CD, then keep hitting enter when prompt, finally you will see the interface to repartition. The operation is exactly the same as Mini tool.
Idk all I did was shut my phone down and now it won't boot back up or anything. No charging indicator lights....nothing. This sucks. I didn't do anything to the phone recently...
But after doing research I guess Samsung had this problem happen a lot.

The MDZ-16-AB can in fact be rooted , but for now it requires you to keep the device in "USB Debugging mode" , preventing you from using the USB port. While you can turn off debugging if you need, should your device reset with debugging off, you won't have a way to exit the bootloop created by rooting the device. You need to send 2 adb commands to exit the bootloop. If you can't send those commands , then your only option is to reflash the device using the recovery. If your remote gets disconnected from the mi box , then you can't enter recovery mode, which means your device is now stuck in a forever bootloop.
There might be a way to re-pair the remote, but I haven't looked into that yet. I read in a post someone saying you might be able to re-pair the remote by inserting and removing the batteries until you get lucky.
While messing around with root and trying to fix the bootloop , at some point my MDZ-16-AB told me to resync the remote to it. It showed me a screen of the remote real close to the device, and said something like : Place the remote within 20 centimeters of the device and hold BACK + ENTER. Not sure why this popped because my remote was still synced, but it's good to know. I have no idea if this would work while in a bootloop though.
You can find information on how to root across this thread : https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-stick--console-computers/amlogic/s905x-help-mi-box-android-tv-mdz-16-ab-t3477286

Write access on HDD with Root
I solved this problem with use of Xposed + Marshmallow SD Fix. Need Root access on your Box. Now Full write access on all hdd
Il Explain the process : This trick need to edit system settings for security on external storage :
-Install XposedInstaller, install the Framework, reboot the Box. (App optimisation after install Xposed)
- Install Marshmallow SD Fix on PlayStore, activate the application in Xposed Installer in "modules"
Launch the app SDFix, select the app you want to write access on all drives. new reboot on your box.
I explore the Web one long night for this problem to write access, without root, I think it's not easy to change this android security setting.
For Box with Root, Now have fun with the write access on all drives ! I use this write access on my HDD for Samba Share, AirDroid access for remove or move files, or in SPMC for directly delete files on the application. or in the app ES Fil Explorer, no confirmation prompt, perfect.
My Android Box :
Bqeel K12 SOC Amlogic S912 - 2GB RAM - 32 GB MMC - Android 6.0.1 Full root, Busy Box installed, and Xposed Framework.

Hi,
I'm not sure it's easy to root Xiaomi Mi Box cause it's not a simple Android but it's Android TV.
Finally I've formated my HDD in internal memory and put on in all my data with FTP by ES Explorer.
Now all is good and no restriction but my HDD is now only for this box.
This is driving me crazy....has anyone been able to get the box to write on HDD without root???
What do you mean exactly?
Try Solid explorer from the play store. I am not sure if there is a Android TV version. might need to sideload them.
Using Solid explorer I am able to write to SD card on my non-rooted Android 7 phone.
You can't write on USB devices on Android TV 6.0.1.
Two options :
- wait Android TV 7
- format your USB drive as internal memory => works fine
I have need to format USB on windows machine as NTFS partition and then stick has worked.
Did anyone figure this out?
The main reason I got the Mi Box is to connect it to my external drive with my media and download torrents and stuff to it.
Much to my surprise, you can't use external drives with this box. It's absolutely insane, I regret buying it...
Please tell me there is a way I can use my hard drive and won't have to bin this thing.

format the external hdd as internal memory and you can download just fine.
Can anyone explain why it is so complicated .formatted as external storage - you cant write. Formatted as internal storage - first took so long . Try to format 1tb. Second you can write but now cant use it with other devices. Pc etc. Why is this for?

Non-rooted mi box 3 (global version) external hard disk write permission issue solutions:
1. Download exfat/NTFS paragon app and mount the usb device. Now you can delete, write, copy, cut the all files in usb device with Total Commander app.
2. Download PopCorn Time app. This app can download movies and tv shows to your external hard disk with no need to root.
These 2 methods work fine with my nonrooted mi box 3.
How to enable writing to a usb drive on Mi Box
Do you own a Mi box and you can't write to a usb drive? Only reading?
Do you get an error when trying to access the usb drive?
Here is a solution to format the USB drive in a way that you would be able to write for it.
WARNING: DURING THIS PROCESS ALL OF THE DATA THAT IS STORED ON THE USB DRIVE WILL BE DELETED. MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP THE USB DRIVE CONTENT BEFORE PROCESSDING.
Option 1:
After plugging the usb drive , go to settings and format as device storage. DONT MOVE ANY DATA AND APP TO THE USB DRIVR EVEN IF IT ASKS YOU.
After that, format the USB drive as removable storage.
Now you can write data to the usb drive.
Option 2:
Open your computer and format the usb drive with the FAT32 file system with an allocation unit size of 16 kilobytes or 32 kilobytes.
Give the usb drive a name without any spaces.
After formatting the usb drive in the proper way, I recommend using es explorer to arrange the files in the drive.
Enjoy!

Thanks, but none if of this works. Mi Box TV 3 Oreo, I just tried with a brand new USB key, no way, to be able to write stuff....using ES Explorer, WIFI Expplorer etc.... I think I will throw it to garbage soon.
It's amazing we cannot write to our USB key connected to the mi box....I am trying to understand what's behind this, in 2019...what a waste of time...seriously. Why did they do that ?
EDIT: apparently it's Android TV permission, it's the same for other Android TV boxes.
I've tried VirtualHere with no success, yet. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1023331/why-can-t-i-write-to-external-usb-on-shield-tv-/
