GPS NAVIGATION :: SOFTWARE + MAPS
SOFTWARE + REGION SUPPORT COMPARISON
COMMUNITY FEEDBACK + REVIEW + POLL!
To assist the community, and members of this forum, there is a need to build a "database" of new, current and available software which is compatible with certain devices. Also, there is a MAJOR need to know if maps are or are not available for specifc regions / countries and continents.
Found a mistake? Please let me know so I can correct it!
Enjoy!

Version 8 works on the WildFire, however "hacks" are required to successfully install the software.
XDA-Developers User Feedback Summary:
v8 is difficult to install, as you must change the screen resolution (of the WildFire) to something compatible with the software.
Must use installation "hack" to allow installation.
Screen resolution and quality of maps is not very good (on WildFire).
Maps seem to only support Europe! (Eastern and Western Europe)
Negative feedback from users.
# Google Maps (http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/)
Which version works and supports the HTC WildFire?
Independant of version. All maps are stored on Google's server.
XDA-Developers User Feedback Summary:
Uses high amounts of data so becomes expensive.
You must subscribe for a high bandwidth data plan with your carrier.
Independant of network coverage (whether you receive map updates).
Supports ONLY the U.K. and the U.S.A!
The "Robot Voice" can make it difficult to understand audio prompts and commands.
Audio voice also difficult to hear and understand with background noise (V8 Engine, Traffic, etc.).
Great coverage when in a country with coverage (UK or USA).
Drains your battery faster with the data connection! Battery life is heavily reduced.

Destinator 6 for PocketPC and
Aren't version numbers only usefull if you PIRATE an application?
Also you can just email a dev for support for the wildfire...
Why is it, that almost EVERY topic I read, rather than people being constructive and offering users' their feedback - instead, I see people suggesting that a topic is focused on piracy??
You do realise there are websites like Google, don't you?
Look at the topic! How on earth can this be piracy?
The reason for a topic with accurate and relevant information such as versions:
e.g. v10.1 may support HTC Desire, and not the HTC Wildfire. v10.5 may support both, but without any compatible maps for Canada, Europe and Asia! This topic is aimed at MAPS and GPS software availability.
Some software will work on the WildFire, however will have maps more than 2+ years old!
It's such a pity there are people so 'close-minded' as you... willing to waste their time, submiting responses like that!
Alright kiddo, Here's an application for you CoPilot EU Version.
God knows what version it is, its the latest from the market.
Pretty uptodate for Belgium.
But personally I am still waiting for TomTom to come.
I have a feeling it will be here in a while.
Oh and map version, I have no clue it automatically downloads them from their server onto your SD card.
Sygic GPS works fine. Small installation file, but useful. Maps is small, but all just looks fine. But google map's coverage is larger than Sygic. Google map can find the location that sygic cant find. Just install both of them and u can go anywhere.
i have Copilot Live Pro 8.2.0.218 and navigon 2.6.1, good soft. i used cygic9, but didnt work on my wildfire and ndrive crash at beginning.
google map still the best, almost 99.99% coverage compare to all of the gps.
LOL :B
Thank you for your feedback!
From what I knew about Google Maps:
- it only works in the U.S.A.!
- it requires a data connection,
- the average device has a minimum of 8gb! Maps are less than 500mb, is it not faster and easier to have local maps, rather than require a data connection (especially if in an area of bad coverage),
- covers a minority of the worlds population.
- slow on updates and zoom, and incredibly slow street view (if available),
- and so on....
I may be wrong, but it doesn't offer many features outside of the USA/Canada...
http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/
Scroll to bottom and select your country....
Google Maps works fine in the UK, but I find the robot voice difficult to hear over the thundering of my Ford diesel engine.
Sygic works well with 2.1 but not so well on 2.2, there are LOTS of crashes
I tried Copilot but did not like the interface, looks like it has been designed by ToysRUS or the Early Learning Centre
Navigation
CoPilot Live 8.2 Works absolutely fine for me, updates speed cameras and is quite a reasonable interface.
Navigon is ok but very quiet on stock roms although it is louder using the wildpuzzle
IGO8 is a bit difficult to install because you must change the screen resolution on wildfire. there is a small installation hack for this but screen is still not very good.
Google Maps is pretty good, but uses a lot of your data plan each time and would be prohibitively expensive outside uk.
Be aware, from my research it appears that copilot is the only one that is ok outside uk, others you have to change maps etc.
Hope this helps
Regards
Wow! Fantastic feedback people!
Thank you for spending the time helping others!
Updating topic with users feedback!
Thanks!
Papago X5
I'm using Papago X5 for Malaysian maps. I used to use Sygic but upon moving on to froyo, sygic kept crashing. Papago's maps seems to be more extensive than that of Sygics and is quite accurate. However, it does not have as many features as Sygic.

You say GPS quite accurate on Froyo. What is your Froyo custom rom do you use on Wildfire? I ask you cause in any custom rom that I use the GPS do not accurate on Google Map App.
Thank you and sorry for my English.
I use GPS a lot in my job and CoPilot 8 has yet to fail me on finding an obscure address in the middle of the dark swedish forests. A few speed limits and recent constructions are not up to date, but apart from that It's very nice.
Google Navigation doesn't work in Sweden, but using the modded version I've tried it out. It crashed a lot and didn't have speed camera info, but it had a somewhat nicer interface and the calculated travel times were more accurate. Searching for a destination is simpler too.
Have been using Sygic both on WM phone and now Android (2.1). Using with WM the program was very stable and good enough to navigate both for private and business purposes.
On Android the screen resolution is less good but acceptable......the big annoyance is that the program looses gps connection during a few seconds up to more than 15 minutes and than comes back......a restart does not help. Suppose people refer to this when they talk about crashing. I use Sygic mobile maps 10, version 8.14
TomTom did not have any crashes on WM so anxiously waiting till it comes available for Android. TomTom seems to be working on an Android version.
I use Sygic mobile maps 10 on Cyanogenmod Stable and works fine.
Sorry for the bump.
But I just contacted Sygic support asking for Wildfire compatibility and they informed me that it is NOT compatible.
How come you guys are stating that it works?
Thanks
I'm evaluating whether I'd go for the Wildfire or the € 200 more expensive Desire. I bought the HTC Touch Cruise 3 years ago for € 540 and was utterly disappointed that I got little value for my money. That's why I need to know whether Sygic runs decently on Wildfire or not... If you could post youtube video, that would be great

I have used both Touch Cruise 1 and 2 with Sygic and got good performance (stability and navigation function) although I liked TomTom better, but that can be ofcourse a matter of personal preference.
On Wildfire I tried Sygic 8.14, 8.16 and 8.06 and all of them had their problems.........ranging from crashing, not able to get GPS started and in case of 8.16 I could not even activate maps.......I am a bit dissapointed in Sygic since on their site there is no reference as to not working with Wildfire. Note I am using stock Froyo Rom.
Searching now for alternative......
Copilot live 8
Yesterday installed Copilot Live 8. Was an easy process. Maps can be downloaded via WiFi.
Due to some reason I could not download the complete Europe map but only do this in pieces. Navigation across boarders therefor not possible.....you even have to close the programm to switch maps.
Apart from that it has not crashed, although I made only 2 rides up till now.
Screen resolution is much better than Sygic. And the buttons are bigger which makes it easier to navigate menu's compared to sygic. Just like TomTom (and Sygic) a lot of settings possible. Even on-line updates possible.
Will report back when I gathered more experience.
navdroyd works fine for me ,
has support for maps all over the world

has voice guidance
Maps Tool - new free app (with no ads either) to work with gps coordinate, maps and grids, including public land survey system (township, range, section)!
Do you happen to own some real paper maps? If so, my new app is designed exactly to make using them simpler. Or maybe you are just interested to learn something about geodesy, navigation and cartography? If so – read on.
While most online and other digital maps are now standardized around using decimal degrees latitude/longitude pairs using WGS84 geodesic datum, paper maps are not so simple. They use all kinds of different coordinate system. Many use UTM – Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system that was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s. NATO militaries around the world wanted their own thing and developed another grid coordinate system called MGRS. While these two are most popular there are many more other grids, especially once we go to local level. Maps in UK often use something called Ordinance Survey National Grid (OSGB) while Ireland had to use yet another system called Irish Grid.
To make things even more complicated years before recent standardization around WGS84, maps often used other geodesic datum, based on different models of earth ellipsoid and measurements. In fact many historic reference earth ellipsoids are still used in local areas, since they may provide better accuracy of measurements in certain territories. In practice this means that getting coordinates assuming wrong datum can put you hundreds of meters away.
Maps Tool is a powerful app that allows you to convert data between many coordinate system representations and also adjust for various datum. This app currently supports lat/lng, UTM, MGRS, Earth-centered, Earth-fixed Cartesian coordinate system, Swedish Grid, Ordnance Survey of Great Britain and Irish National Grid and many different geodetic datums, including, but not limited to: WGS 84, NAD 27, ED 50, ETRF 89, OSGB 36, OSI 65, RT 90, SWEREF 99, SIRGAS 2000, SAD 69, Córrego Alegre, SICAD, Astro Chuá and SK 42.
By default Maps Tool uses offline HERE+ maps already stored on your phone, but can also use Bing Maps, Google Maps, and OpenStreetMaps for better coverage. Overlays such as topographic map and satellite imagery are also available. Other handy function of Maps Tool include geocoding (finding location by address) and reverse geocoding (find closest address for a given location), sharing your location via sms/email and build-in database of around 3000 major cities and 9000 world airports for quick access (you can just key in a 3-letter IATA or 4-letter ICAO code).
Using web service from BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Maps Tool also gives you access to PLSS (Public Land Survey System) information (township, range, section) as a convenient map overlay (you can search for parcels by TRS or view parcels around you by tapping on the map).
Last but not least, Maps Tool app allows you to see rough altitude information from the GPS module in your phone, or (available as an optional download) query various GIS systems for accurate topographical altitude information including currently supported: USGS (US only), SRTM3, GTOPO30, ASTER and Google.
Best of all this app does not require a data connection to work, so you can take it with you into the field.
It is currently translated to English, Russian and Japanese and if you can help with more languages - please let me know.

short version:
i am looking for the cause why the android date format is not ISO 8601 concurrent adjustable.
long version:
on an operating system like linux/unix or win one can set the date format to various formats including the ISO 8601 concurrent one. for decades!
so the user can decide if it is:
1/19/15
19/1/15
Jan.19,2015
19/01/2015
19.01.2015
2015.01.19
2015/01/19
2015-01-19 <- thats the ISO 8601
there are even are more
with a reference to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_and_time_representation_by_country#ISO_8601 said:
International standard ISO 8601 (Representation of dates and times) defines unambiguous written all-numeric big-endian formats for dates, such as 1999-12-31 for 31 December 1999, and time, such as 23:59:58 for 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 58 seconds.
These standard notations have been adopted by many countries as a national standard, e.g., BS EN 28601 in the UK and similarly in other EU countries, ANSI INCITS 30-1997 (R2008), and FIPS PUB 4-2 in the United States (FIPS PUB 4-2 withdrawn in United States 2008-09-02).[1] They are, in particular, increasingly widely used in computer applications, since the most to least significant digit order provides a simple method to order and sort time readings.

i take android as an modern operating system and am confused about the date format.
my confusion is based on the following experiences:
- samsung stock rom 4.4.4
- htc stock rom 2.3.2
- samsung stock rom 4.4.2
- CM11 rom 4.4.4
- CM12 rom 5.0.2
- PAC-ROM rom 4.4.4
- sony stock rom 4.3
- sony stock rom 4.2
- toshiba stock rom 4.3
all roms lack the ISO 8601 option ...
and to make it even worse:
if the system language is changed the seperator is changed too. imho paradoxical.
paradoxical because:
if set to an european country language for example the option MMDDYYYY is still available and no european would use this.
if the language is changed to english (US) as next example the option DDMMYYYY is still available and the seperator . is changed to /
hence paradoxical!
one cant keep a standard date format across the language settings!
and one can think now: why isnt there a 'standard'?
here it is:
ISO 8601
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601 said:
ISO 8601 Data elements and interchange formats – Information interchange – Representation of dates and times is an international standard covering the exchange of date and time-related data. It was issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was first published in 1988. The purpose of this standard is to provide an unambiguous and well-defined method of representing dates and times, so as to avoid misinterpretation of numeric representations of dates and times, particularly when data are transferred between countries with different conventions for writing numeric dates and times.
In general, ISO 8601 applies to representations and formats of dates in the Gregorian (and potentially proleptic Gregorian) calendar, times based on the 24-hour timekeeping system (including optional time zone information), time intervals and combinations thereof.[1] The standard does not assign any specific meaning to elements of the date/time to be represented; the meaning will depend on the context of its use. In addition, dates and times to be represented cannot include words with no specified numerical meaning in the standard (e.g. names of years in the Chinese calendar) or that do not use characters (e.g. images, sounds).

so why is this not considered?
am i in a so tiny minority that cares?
take the following scenario:
a non native english speaking, european based user sets his device language to 'English (UK)'
the date and time setting goes automatically to so called 'regional' DDMMYYY and can be changed to YYYYMMDD with a / seperator.
wouldnt it be nice to have YYYYMMDD with a - seperator?
that was the long version to my question:
why can my android not be configured to show the ISO 8601 date format?
if there is a way to manipulate/hack the locale settings on my devices i am happy for an advice/link/hint/howto
well...
was it the wrong forum here for this kind of question?
can one give an advice where to post to reach the involved guys?
While it should have been in the questions forum, there is no real harm here.
Yes you are in the minority on this. Very few people have to worry about it as they just use a widget for time and date and some should have what your looking for.
quite strange
anyone?
today, maybe?
I second your complaint.
An international standardization is supposed to spread all over the world, but it cannot, if it is not supported by the operating system, or the apps themselves.
Things like the date/time format, the measurement system, etc. should not depend on the chosen language.
However, there is a second hurdle: A lot of apps simply don't care about the user's choice of the date format, or if s/he specified "Large text" in Accessibility.
Ignorance rules the world
finally...
@DetlevSchm
i am not sure what to think about it at all.
as you mentioned it is a simple BASIC thing/option!
imho this just clearly shows the still under construction status of android, despite the given version 5.x somthing
at least i am not alone, and i will keep on question here.
hm...
i am in contact with android for some time now and i am not sure how to take this.
ok, i have had the hope to find a representative or maybe important platform here. obviously not!
can one give a hint how to get to the cause of this failure?
how to get in touch with the ones that created that mess?
so...
any news
so it is M now...
is there any progression?
still wrong ...
same poo on N ...

With all due respect:
- "Very few people have to worry about it as they just use a widget for time and date and some should have what your looking for" => while many users are getting used to twiddle app settings on a daily basis, most of them would have better things to do than update date and time settings, possibly even after an app updates, on a widget basis. Sometimes that is even not possible. A consistent approach supported by the OS for a world ISO standard time format would be appreciated. IMHO this may only be lacking because Android was not around for Y2K fixes.
- I am sitting here as I cannot change the date format on my LG phone on Android Oreo. Some apps just take the system format (in my case US format) and generate filenames.
- It is really incovenient to sort by the US date format. Big Endian such as ISO 8601 would be appreciated. I would also prefer not to use the little endian DD-MM-YYYY German format or thier commas as decimal separators.
- Many people are internationally active. I do honestly believe that most of them would appreciate ISO 8601 support and a choice of decimal separator.
Thank you for understanding.
