Figured I would start this thread as dcd made the request. Not sure if it'll be used at all, but at least it's here. Let's keep his thread on topic.
good idea.
SO i have been working with Home and so far, when disabling the tabs one at a time, the memory leak still happens. so much so that after an hour i will have a frozen phone. I did notice that when i disabled the favorite person tab, the memory leaked slower, but it still did. I also tried older versions becasue i thought maybe version 2.1 was the prblem. nope, still happened.
I'm currently using HTC Home, latest version from the PPCGeeks OEM used in Dogguy's kitchen with dcd 2.2.3 on vzw. My leak isn't that bad, it still leaks, but it's not draining it down to nothing. Not sure if it's just a fluke or what, but I'm happy so far and it's liveable.
Edit: I'm using ONLY the home, weather, and profile tabs.
I am on the DCD 2.2.3 WM6.1 and HTC Home with the extra button plug in. My memory is terrible! After a soft reset I'm on about 18megs of ram. After half day use I'm down to about 10-13megs. Even after ending all tasks and running Oxios I only get back about 16ish.
Although ram numbers appear to be very low, the phone still seems faster than when I ran the DCD 3.17 beta.

I have the same issue. It looks great after a reboot, but by the end of the day my memory is low. I have been using the HTC plugin. Are we sure that is what causes it? I have heard others say that PIE causes part of it, but I never really tested where the memory is going. Chad
I dont ever use PIE (i use opera mini), and i still have a pretty bad leak.. so im pretty sure its htc home
Is there any other alternative beside HTC Home?
pointui and pocket plus
Pocket Plus's small icons are a eye sore for me. I love the big icons that HTC home has. Pointui, never used it, but it seems that you cannot really customize it very well. Anyone try anything else?

Neither of those is a good replacement for HTC Home. You might try HTC plus though.
Yeah, I have the same issue. dcd's latest rom + HTC home = memory leak. for me, I start off after a soft reset with about 45% free ram, about 18 or 19MB. By the end of the day, it's down to about 11 or 12MB free, or about 28%.
Device still seems snappy, but I'm not running anything else on my today screen except tasks, and I use HTC task manager to close programs when I hit X.
Point UI leaks even worse.. especially in conjunction with Opera it seems.. I can wipe out 14 megs of memory after checking my mail running those 2...
pocket plus doesnt have small icons for me and pointui doesnt leak at all for meway better then htc home
I installed the Sprint ROM 3.16 and the memory leak is no longer there. Either I lucked out with reinstalling the ROM or the leak is related to the DCD rom
I have been trying Wisebar3 and Wisebar Desktop, but they both take up a log of mem. I was then trying out RLToday. I found some nice themes, but none really come close to the HTC Home. One thing nice about the RLToday is that it takes little memory. I really like HTC Home, but it just bugs me that I have to reboot the phone every other day to get the memory back. I would like to find a better replacement. Chad
Bumping this to the top because I am interested in this subject.
I dont think it has anything to do with the home. I dont even use the home and i get a bad leak. it goes down to like 10 megs after not even 10 mins and when i look to see where most of it is going i still cant see. Its like running in the background. and cant be seen
I have noticed the same leak , I am running verizon factory rom and no matter what today screan I use I have the memory leak, which I believe is a today screan leak. I have used SPD plus and mobile , and HTC which I am running now they all have caused a leak but not it seems the htc home isnt that bad. Im hoping when a offical rom update is released that is is taken care of.
I have tried DCD roms and I still had some issues with it
Yeah after trying out SEVERAL different today themes I've come to the conclusion that the major memory leak resides somewhere in windows mobile 6.1.
HTCHome does have a small leak itself, but I've come to terms with it and use it anyway and my phone is fine. I have the task manager and Oxios Hibernate (frees memory) on my launcher and use them all the time. I soft reset the phone usually once a day and it's fine.
I've tried PointUI, Wisbar, RLtoday, and HTC Plus and the major leak (the one that drops it down to > 8 mb) occurs anyway.
I'm hoping that when the final product gets released by microsoft/htc/verizon/sprint, the leak is somewhat fixed. Until then I'll be using HTCHome.
What is HTC Home? Does anyone have any screenshots? Whats the difference between home and plus?
I am getting a little fed up with the sense UI now. For some reason it forces itself to close and takes its time to load up again. This happens everytime I try to come out of an application by pressing the home button.
The black screen appears with the HTC logo like it does when you restart the phone and it takes at least 3 to 4 mins to start the sense UI again. It stalls ever single time. Every single time?
Anyone else havet his problem? I updated the firmware from the HTC website last september, it improved the speed but not as fast as I would like it to be.
I am on the verge to ditch this device and go for HD2 on Windows. Please stop me if you think thats an absurd idea.
i share your dislike for the sense ui, but i think it might be worth waiting a few days for the 2.1 rom to be released.
No dates yet? I didnt even know there was going to be a 2.1 update. Older phones are usually forgotten and sidelined by HTC and the likes
I have experienced this and I think it's android system closing the app because of low memory... I could be wrong. I haven't looked into it but thats my guess.

I think maybe you are closing the app wrong try pressing the back button instead this closes the app and you end back on the screen you launched the app from
mifran
I am sure thats not the case. The home button should really take you back to the home screen even of the program is still running right? Its just stalling and pee'ing me off.
Im going off the Hero completely because of this and other issues including the lags. Despite updating the firmware, the lag still seems to be prevalent.
Looking into alternatives now. Perhaps the droid of the sony X10.
If anyone has any other suggestions to fix this issue while I wait for the x10 to come out, please do share.
Also, it would help if people would share their opinions on other android products coming into the limelight including the ones mentioned above.
I just tried your way on mine running modaco 3.1 which app is causing the problem for you any app i have running when touch home button it closes and goes back to home page no blank screen or reboot needed

Are you using a task killer to automatically kill tasks? If so, is Sense in the ignore list?

are you still using stock rom??? try using a custom one. a modaco one for example. also, why would you consider droid or wait for the x10 when the nexus is out
Have experienced the same issue using modaco roms.
In my case its when I close the MAIL, EXPLORER, or sometimes SETTINGS app from Advanced task manager.
For some reason those appas seem to be locked into the Sense UI somehow in these roms.
Cant be bothered with the effort of tracking, or fixing it, since I am waiting for the new roms, which hopefully will be better! ;-)
Thanks for your suggestions for moving on to MCR. I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to custom roms. I have never tried them as I am a bit of a noob. I can probably follow instructions, but they need to be written for a 5 year old.
I have heard great things about the MCR and really do want to give it a shot. I dont think it fixes the prevailing lag issue.
Off topic, but I was also reading up on overclocking but apparently no one has been able to achieve the full 528 Mhz on the Hero yet. Any further development I might have missed?
@foxmeister
I am using a task killer and can confirm that the sense UI is ignored. Task Killer is only ever used when I need to shut things down. Its not on autopilot.
@deeren
Nexus is out true, but its bog standard google. No sexy UI like the Sense. Not the best of reviews either. People have been harsh on google it seems. The papers, forums and blogs are rife with the worst google bashing in ages over the nexus. It looks ugly too.
Have you seen the X10 yet? Its gorgeous. The UI seems to be amazing. Same 1Ghz snapdragon, 8MP camera and what not. Beats the nexus hands down.

The droid is cool too, although I fear it has the same lag issues as the Hero. I hate lag. My Mrs has the Iphone 3GS and I have not seen any Android phone compare to the speed of the Iphone. Pretty sad.
As for Modaco Rom. Does anyone know where there is a written guide for 5 year olds?
The phone is not rooted or anything, just has the updated Rom from last Sep.
Install Kagudroid. Problem solved.
I had this problem as well! Htc Sense would keep crashing and it kept showing up with force close, each time I would have to turn off the phone and turn it back on to fix it.
Then I saw a thread on here (sorry, couldn't find it again), but if you are using ANY type of task manager, make sure you add "HTC Checkin Service" to exempt, so NEVER end that process.
Once I did that, my phone has NEVER crashed again! Works great!!
The weird thing is, htc sense doesn't crash right away after ending that process, it only crashes later on!
Howdy!
A week ago I switched to this lovely device. I almost can't remember how I ever survived without it.. In any case, I'm very satisfied, as it's a huge upgrade from my previous SE X1.
Now, I've been heavily involved in the X1 modding community, so I know my way around WM. For the HD2 some things appear to be different, so I'd like some help!
FYI I'm using NRGZ's Energyroms; currently using the 18-08 build (winmo 6.5 with cookie hometab sense UI). Probably upgrading to 25-08 soon.
First of all, I'm trying to set one of the hardkeys to rotate the screen for me. For the X1 there was a specific app, doesn't work on the HD2. Thus, I tried the well-known AEB Plus. Alas, whenever I map a key with it, the app automatically maps every hardkey to that function (it got really funky when I tried to change my volume, my screen kept rotating like crazy).
So, which app/workaround best to use for the HD2?
Second, I'm noticing quite some battery drainage. I've flashed a different radio to ensure that Android would run properly as well (and it does, yaay!); but I'm not sure which ROM works best when it comes to battery life. I've been poking around the Radio ROM thread, but haven't yet found a conclusive answer. Did anyone do some testing? Any reliable results?
Finally, I'm noticing that movie files often still play a bit choppy. Now I know it's very much possible to run them completely smooth with the snapdragon's power. I've tried Projection's HD video encoder, but that came out even worse (or at least played worse, with both WM player and TCPMP). Which format works best for the HD2? Can you guys advise me a freeware converter?
I'm sorry for the long post, but thanks ever so much for taking the time to read this far. Cheers!
Hi there,
For the first question i have no clue havent tried that before
for Andriod i know tthat your ROM has to be 2.08.x or higher i used 2.10.50.26 wich worked pretty well. There are some new Android builds with less power drainage but still the consumption is a lil high
for the last part i havent found that out yet
Ok, in the energy rom press and hold the call key to rotate screen, as for battery drainage in android it a work in progress I use shubCRAFT latest build battery is quite good about 55 mins per hour in standby l. I use the 2.11 radio and energy cookie rom.
Don't know if it makes and difference but I put Wm in aeroplane mode and disable sencse before I boot android.
Get on the shubCRAFT forum and install his build its rapid and is almost perfect
Htc Hd2 vodafone UK
Can't remember what avi player I uses in Wm because I haven't been back for a week android is very very stable and puts Wm to shame. However rock player in android works perfectly for me. Get to shubCRAFT man also it has a busy and helpful forum
Htc Hd2 vodafone UK
Thanks for the answer, both of you.
I guess I'll try and upgrade to a later android build, see how it works. Could you give me a link to a good android build? The one you experience to be most solid?
As for the radio, I'll upgrade to the newest and give it a go, I guess the best way to find out is to simply try it.
The energy ROM thing doesn't work for me, I'll upgrade it to the latest. Thanks!

So I have had my HD2 for about 2 months and have been reluctant to add Android because I believe this WinMo 6.5 can work well. CHT has been an awesome addition but after a couple of weeks I experienced freezing and ultimately the phone hard reset itself. I turned it off and when it turned back on, it was at the startup screen and all my info was gone. So I replaced all my contacts and began slowly adding my apps back on. I have been using the newest Opera 10 for my browser and noticed that when the phone freezes every couple of weeks and I have to reset it (3 times now) it is right after trying to open the browser, it gives me a long error about the operamvi4 or something to that effect. So I removed the browser and am wondering a few things
Has anyone else had this problem?
What does it mean that the browser is not working with my otherwise stock phone?
What browser should I use, tried Skyfire and it would not connect to its server, so i uninstalled it.
Ive been using Iexplorer, but am not at all thrilled with its ease of use or it download screen.
I would think that after hard resetting this phone that problems would not happen, but even running stock, I still have issues.
BTW, I want CHT back on my phone but am reluctant now because after a week to 2 weeks, the phone freezes and I have to HR.
Please help, I know this is a long ramble, but I just want to know if I can do anything before talking to TMobile for a hour and half before they send me a new one.
Thanks
Ken
A lot of people have had issues with the stock roms on the hd2. I would recommend going with a custom rom.
Also, when you use android on the hd2, you won't be losing winmo... android runs off of the SD card, so you can have both on your phone. Use winmo for most of the time, then play around in android when you want to play games or use android apps. That's what I do.
But for now, I recommend reading up on how to install hspl and flash your phone... your phone will be much more stable and usable with a good custom rom. Energy roms are a good rom to flash for your first time... and there are versions with cht2.0 cooked in already.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
ive always found opera 9.7 that comes as stock to be the best browser.
+1 on the energy roms too....
I'd say my HD2 froze at least 3-4 times per day with the stock ROM, I was so pissed & thought I'd wasted $200 on the upgrade. But then I thought, what the heck it's no good to me this way so before I sell it on ebay I'll mess with a custom ROM to see if that helps. Well help it did and I kept it around a little longer but still needed to reboot a couple of times a day just to speed things up. Then android came along and I only see winmo when I update builds, to me it's so much better than winmo I wonder whats the point of 7, really who cares? Android is easy to work with once you get to the point of being able to flash a custom rom, try it.
Hopefully I won't get attacked for asking this but I have seen some lag on the device; both in videos and playing with it. Browsing the web seemed to produce the most lag. It just didn't seem as zippy as it should. I know the device as a Qualcomm Processor which isn't as powerful as the Exynos processor but I didn't think you could tell a difference. Can I get some feedback on this before I purchase the device tomorrow? Thanks

It's impossible to tweak until you get the device. It's best to do some research on these forums before or after you buy the phone.
I personally have no lag at all, along with many other people on this forum.
Installing a different launcher and custom roms are just one of the many things you can do to improve performance.

I am currently on one of the ICS leaks, using nova launcher, and have virtually no lag. ICS seems to have fixed video playback being a bit jumpy for me, though it wasn't a huge problem on GB. On GB I was running Solaris Prime, overclocked to 1.83 GHz, and using ADW EX, experienced no lag whatsoever there either. I use Dolphin Browser HD instead of the stock browser most of the time, and that had given me very smooth performance all around, as well as access to desktop sites instead of mobile sites.
If you get a Note that seems super laggy, exchange it for a new one in your first 30 days until you get a good one. It seems as though most Notes are fine, with only a select few experiencing poor performance, most of which can probably actually be attributed to the person's own apps and not the actual device.
Buy it and be prepared for all other phones to pale in comparison to this beast...it has ruined all other phones for me, so that I will likely only upgrade to the Note 2 when that rolls around. This thing is crazy awesome.

Thanks for the replies. I plan on picking it up and loading the custom rom Saurom which everyone says is super stable.
I noticed *minor* lag with scrolling using Dolphin Browser in gingerbread. In ICS, it is smoother than an iphone.
Noticeable Lag
I upgraded my galaxy note to the ICS upgrade. I was a horrible experience as seems to be the norm with ATT rom upgrades. First there was no OTA support for the upgrade. I had to search for the Samsung Kies app and download it. Which took almost 2.5 hours for a 70mb file. Though the program did work okay once i got it downloaded and installed.
So now im upgraded to the long awaited ICS for the ATT Galaxy Note. It turns out its complete garbage. It has all but crippled my phone. The phone lags so bad i cant flip from screen to screen without having to stop and wait 10 to 15 seconds for it to reload each screen. Half the apps no longer work as they should. My Go messenger no longers alerts me when i get a text. When i take a picture to send it to someone. The picture never sends and it doesnt save. it just gets lost in limbo forever.
Answering calls is a futile experience as well. If the phone doesnt crash and reset. It blacks the screen out from lag so long that the voicemail picks up before i can answermy call. So them i have to wait for all this to stop go to my log see who called and try to call them back. Then the phone proceeds to crash back to the home screen 2 out of every three times i try to make a call.
This upgrade is garbage. Give me back gingerbread. Before this upgrade my galaxy note was the fastest most responsive phone i have ever seen. I rarley even had to turn it off to reset it and i think i have only taken the battery out of it once since i got it on launch day. Now the phone has been rendered completley usless.

Clearly your phone experience is "not" normal as compared to most users here.
Perhaps you are unlucky and have a bad upgrade ?
Mine went well , and I only did it to test the update to gather information .
If you are not rooted ...might I suggest doing so , and trying one of the many great roms here.
Or you could restore back to GB to restore your original functionality.
Either way ...I'm sorry that your phone experience has been so miserable. And surely there is help here for you ...g

Thanks for the reply. I used to really enjoy my galaxy note. But the last two weeks or so have been unbearable. Im no tready to go with a custom rom since it seems to em that most of them are not fully functional in some way or another. But i did read on here that some people had very successful upgrades. So im going to figure out what i need to do to redo the upgrade and try again.
I am running the offical att flavor of ics and it sometimes wants to multitask like the iphone. I do get a lot of music skips when running power amp.
If you're nervous about stability, don't be. At the very least you could flash a debloated stock based ROM, or if you're feeling a little more adventurous try Cyanogenmod. Very stable, more so than the ICS update.
Its common knowledge that carriers and OEMs make horrible stock ROMs. Everyone has had a problem like you, and have taken the plunge of flashing a ROM.
There's nothing to be afraid of. Its not a life decision that you can't turn back on. Its easy to go back to stock if you're scared. But there's around 10 great options in the Development section if you want stability.
Bloatware and Touchwiz cripples the phone. Thank goodness for XDA devs!
