Chad has now mainly fixed the RIL, and Dmeadows has released a CM9/AOKP (although both are a bit buggy still) but yeah. We've done it. Development should go crazy now
Would just like to thank Chad again. And of course Dmeadows and Joelz, Antp and Con. Everyone helped keep this thing alive and to the point we are at now. Frankly...

CM9 looks pretty slick, few things to work out in it still it appears. Once VZW and HTC FINALLY release the ICS update and these great devs get their hands on the kernel source, we should be even better off.

Yeah it is. I suspect these guys will smooth the bugs over in time now that Chad has the heavy lifting out of the way.
I'm trying to flash dmeadows013's AOKP ROM, but it's getting stuck at the HTC screen. Anyone else get stalled there for over 20 minutes? Do you *need* to wipe user data? (this new ROM won't be my daily, since I have activate an app with my employer each time I use a new daily so I try to limit it, and it's my understanding that even though I have a nandroid of my daily, if I wipe user data, even that is reset to some degree... correct?).
My nandroid restored me to exactly the point I made it. Same texts, apps, data etc. Idk about a corporate app that requires authentication but I'd imagine restoring wouldn't change that.
You need a full wipe though to install AOKP.

Still couldn't get the CM9 ROM to work, but the AOKP ROM flashed - aside from no SDCard it really seemed to work great. Nice and smooth, definitely a difference between the De-sensed-RUU leak and pure Android. I'm very excited about these recent developments and look forward to a more robust ICS and eventually JB selection of ROMs!
I got cm9 to flash fine. No wifi, never checked sd card issue. 4g and phone calls worked!

What's up guys. I need some help picking the best ROM for me. I know there's tons of them on here, by I'm a novice to Android, and honestly don't even really get te difference between firmware and a ROM. I want some very specific feature which is also why I made this thread seeking your help.
I'm an old iPhone user.. did all the jailbreaking and all myself and even though I think the TB is better than my old iPhone I would love to incorporate some of the "fluidity" it had. Specifically I'm looking a ROM that wouldn't interrupt my music when I get a text to play to notification sound, instead play it on top of the song playing at the moment. I would also like to initiate access the play/pause skip buttons without having to unlock my TB, like double pressing the home button on an iPhone and the play buttons pop up even if you weren't playing any music.
The last and most important to me would be this one: on the iPhone there is a security option that if you have a password set and let's say the phone is stolen and someone tries unlocking the phone more than an allowed number of times(set by the user) it erases EVERYTHING on the phone. These are all I can think off right now. Like I said, I'm a novice to Android and I will appreciate any help and advice I can get. I already had my TB rooted but I just updated the verizon firmware on my TB not knowing that it would un-root it.. so I'm trying to find a ROM ASAP.
Thanks
Edit: I would also like to make my TB run on gingerbread and improve the battery life.
I suggest BAMF roms. I'd give you the website link but I may get banned for it.

It's really about trying them out for yourself. Alot of what you want is available through apps. Not even sure you need to root.
As far as bamf ROMs, they decided to leave xda but if you google them, you should find them.
XDA does not like you linking other sites that do the same thing.
I suggest them because they ate always updating their roms, they have a good group of people happy to assist you, and the roms are just really well done. Chingy does great work too. But apparently posting to another forum gets you banned these days. Google "Team BAMF". :-]

it is against the rules on xda, and its their site.
OP, I've been using gingertheory, which is a gb rom with a hybrid sense of 3.0 and 2.1. Very smooth and fast. The same dev also makes a senseless version of GB that is very light and you can add custom lockscreen to that can have audio controls.

Eh, dont waste your time with bamf. Synergy is where its at IMO. If youre still kinda new, Droid Theory does awesome support. Hes one of the nicest people Ive seen on the boards, but he doesnt consider himself a Dev. lol. Ive heard CM7 is real nice too though if you arent so much of a sense fan.

The one that fits your needs the best, which may or may not reflect the opinions of those in the thread. In short, you need to research and/or try many different ones. The lazy way of asking others won't give you the best results.
Synergy is my favorite. I've tried CM7, BAMF 3.0, Gingertheory, Injectedtheory, and Tesla Coil.
CM7 was my second fav, but Synergy was just farther ahead in development. They are doing nightlys now and things are very smooth. Running on the newest leaked GB base and radio, and it runs on ziggys kernel, which seems to be second to none.

Now that Netflix has officially come out for the Thunderbolt, I am sticking with the official MR2 ROM that is the same as stock but rooted and deodexed. All of the apps I want to run work fine plus I have root for things like Titanium, LBE Privacy Guard, SetCPU and VNC so I see no reason to change. I was considering it for Netflix but since that works fine there is no need to. Perhaps when the other roms have stable releases rather than just nightlies/betas/RCs I will switch to a custom rom.

ALPHA builds are inherently unstable. Unless, of course, you have to wonderful cyanogenmod team behind it.
Things won't work right, be broken, random reboots, etc... Until they all get worked through in later releases.
However, I would recommend doing a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik) and reflash.

Yeah i just flash ROMs and see how they benefit me, and as it relates to MIUI, i hate it. way too simple, reminds me too much like the IPhone, which is as disappointing as it gets
So I'm new at this and need some help.
I flashed MIUI today, and at first it worked great but then after changing around the theme and lock screens it starts to give a "failed to load preview", or "unable to connect to network" notification at the bottom. I would appreciate any ideas because I REALLY liked MIUI's setup.
Would like to make this a poll if possible...
Just curious how long do you all like to keep the Rom's on your phone for...
Do you...
[] Find something and see what sticks and wait till the next update?
[] Flash the newest thing that available?
[] Flash the one with the most replies in a thread?
[] Google and cross reference the info here with Google and then pick one and stay with it
[] Not care and do your flashes an a whim?
[] Run stock and just come here to see whats out and convince yourself to root?
I try to flash the newest thing available and mess with it before returning to what's tried and true like ShoStock.
*If any mod see's this please be kind and turn it into a poll. Thanks*
with the captivate, I found myself flashing something every couple days because it was very slow and unreliable. With this phone, its so fast and reliable that I generally stick with what I have until the next update. But occasionally, I'll get the itch to flash something different so that happens once in a while, too.
I've tried all the ROMS to see which one I like best. Once I find the one that works for me that becomes my default as a nandroid backup.
If a new ROM comes out and it's stable then i try it and see how good it is. Same with Kernels
See my current config on my sig below

Just sticking it out now and waiting for something different, I really just want a theme selection that's what I get bored of.

I miss that like crazy, but iOS is one version while we have thousands of roms and phones.
There is some universal themes in the i9100 section, it was posted somewhere here but not everything worked correctly.
Still running manually debloated Hellraised VillainROM 3. I usually only flash other stuff to confirm/reproduce bugs with said other stuff.
I, of course, am flashing kernels all the time, most of which never go beyond my phone. Less often lately as I try to come up with test cases for the regression I'm hunting.

I typically find something that works the best and stick with it. And anytime it's updated, check out what's added, then manually implement what I want from it. I also keep an eye on other roms' updates and implement some of those features as well.
i too have flashed almost every rom avail. and every single one thats gingerbread based is freakin too alike. a few theme changes here and there but still seems like all the same ****. so i stopped flashing. cm7 was good for awhile until i found miui. love the looks and different themes are endless. phone flies as well. been rockin miui for months and its rock solid. now if cm9/ics would show up... feeling the itch coming on to flash.

Since this is a pretty touchy subject... I'll handle it.
We do not have full functioning AOSP roms. The rezound has very difficult tech to reverse engineer. The AOSP roms that do exist all have no data, text, or call capability. Not even wifi. A few have tried to work on getting AOSP over but either stopped in the hopes that the ICS OTA stuff will help or they just dumped the rezound completely. I just hope you don't get flamed.
What hurts the rezound, was that everyone was expecting to get it and then immediately switch to ICS so the gingerbread development lacked a lot. And leaks don't really help us at all as far as ICS goes. Here we are 8 months after the debut of ICS and we are still left out in the cold.
There are a few people still trying to make AOSP happen, but for now, senseless is as close as you'll get.

Let's not flame this guy. Let's turn this into a productive thread about AOSP even though we have scattered comments about AOSP/AOKP/CM in random threads.
Chad is working on RIL issues in his upcoming kernel. Chad is an extremely busy student so don't expect anything soon although he has gotten calls/sms/1x data working.
We really don't have an updated version of CM9 or AOKP but since we don't have data for them yet, there is no reason to make a ROM bot for them automatically compiling roms nightly.
OK now let's get productive. We have GB source. I don't understand why we don't have a CM7 rom yet. Well, I didn't understand why until I tried do compile/port one myself. I am not an expert at compiling from source especially when our device isn't officially supported but my port won't boot past the splash screen. I am thinking about putting the port up in the dev section and turning it into a community project. I have tried the Demonizing AOSP kernel and I have compiled multiple CM7 kernels from source but still no booting.
I know CM7 is GB based but it's better than nothing at least until we get ICS source.

Yes but it would be much much easier to fix because we has source. Chad even said that 99% of the issues is just rearranging libraries in the kernel.
I would use CM7 over ICS sense as well. I believe a lot of users on here would feel the same.

Alright thanks for letting me know who he was. So now, basically, Chads upcoming kernel will make all current AOSP roms a daily driver (with ril working)? Please tell me if this is incorrect. If its not then I'm actually kind of excited!

There is no guarantee of him getting 3g/4g data working, but if he does then ICS AOSP roms will become a reality.

Alright awesome, thanks for the replies everyone, I can't wait for chad's kernel. And I believe that atm I would use CM7 over the assortment of ics roms we have as well.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Bottom line is that there has been no updates released to the "public" in a couple of months, just word of mouth that they have it working, except for a few bugs.

I think making it a community rom is a pretty good idea.

If that's all you really need then use Slim or CleanRom DE. Slim especially has pretty much all of Sense stripped away either is worlds better for battery life.
Chad is doing what protekk couldnt do.

I just rooted my phone and I'm anxious to put a good solid ROM on here.
Since upgrading to stock ICS from gingerbread (pre root), I've had nothing but problems, so I'm hoping a custom ROM cam solve this. My gps and notification sounds don't work, and the battery life has gone down the tubes.
I basically looking for a great stock gingerbread rom, or a stable ICS ROM that can provide me with the original stability and functionality this phone once provided. Suggestions? I am currently using the 3.0.35-siyah v3.4.2 nomswap+ktoonsez kernel.
Thanks everyone!

Believe me, I'd love to go from ROM to ROM, but I'm a bit busy (grad student) and I cant say I enjoy hacking my phone...the whole process freaks me out. Just doing this out of necessity so I don't need to go back to that stupid iphone. Looking for suggestions from people's experience. I love my gs2 and this is a last resort to get it working like it did before that HORRIBLE ICS roll out.
I hear AOKP 7.1 is really good with battery and GPS, but I alo hear the kernel is what determines battery. Truth on both fronts?

If you want stability go for Shostock2. Its an ICS rom but it is one of the most stable roms out there IMO

Where are u finding aokp 7.1? U have an i777 not a skyrocket or i9100 right
Sent from team Pirate headquarters using Beanacle ROM. As soon as he builds it.
Rom xyz is best for battery but qrs is faster. Ghi is more customizable, but you will find mnop to be the best all around package.
See how that works?

If you're looking to replace stock gingerbread, then as 122ninjas said I would recommend going with ShoStock2. It's my daily driver. If you go with AOKP or another AOSP type ROM, You'll have to find substitutes for all the touchwiz -based applications that you're used to.
[puts on tinfoil suit for recommending a ROM]

Oh god no! Someone less informed then you is asking a question! Run for the hills! Burn him at the stake!
If this guy at the site isn't as trustworthy as I felt, let me know and point me in the direction that YOU would prefer to see me take. I'm here because I'm open to suggestions and I'm aware most of you here are extremely knowledgable in a subject I'm not.
So, with that being said....
What do you suggest?

I could say the same thing for PhoneBricker even though it is no longer supported. Point is, as you know ninja, ROMS and kernels play differently on each phone. Also, each gives a unique user experience.
OP, flashing correctly takes about 10-15 minutes not including download time. So, not having time doesn't work as a reason. Not being rude. It's easy to do while you're:
Taking shower
Using the restroom
Washing the dishes
While you're surfing FB on your laptop/PC

Nice, Ill give shostock a go today. Gotta admit, the AOKP Jb stuff looks awesome with all the customizable options, but I feel with more bells and whistles comes more issues. I assume JB ROMS aren't going to be as stable.

No offense taken! I think my trepidation comes more from my experience with this phone....I did that official ICS update and it ruined my phone. Got a new one, and a ton of bugs made me frustrated. I finally did the root (which was stupid easy....like...really easy.) so I have a bit of confidence now.

Once you start flashing stuff with CWM the deepest trouble I have been in is needing a factory reset. But if you are really scared then go ahead and download all the return to stock + root files and mobile odin and stuff. I just did that in case of emergencies.

Takes that long for the ROM to flash. Then add kernel cleaner and Gapps. Then reboot + re-optimization... Taking closer to 10 minutes. Add a few more minutes and you've got a great estimate of 10-15. EVERYONE has 10-15 minutes in their day to flash a ROM considering it's hands off once you press "go". See my examples.
The post above this has a great tip for anyone who wants to be prepared for the worst.
