Hope the subject isn't _too_ descriptive, but I wanted to make sure this wasn't confused with the screen just shutting off. It does, but it is then very difficult to turn it back on. I have to wait a few seconds, then press the power button repeatedly, and finally hold it down - if I let go, the screen shuts off again.
Any ideas?!? I am currently on epinter's CM10, but have had the same thing with jokersax CM10, as well as CM9 and CM7. I don't think it's hardware as I was previously on Alien and it was fine. I have been through the mentioned ROM's and it didn't work. I went back to Alien and it was fine. I'm back on epinter's CM10, and it doesn't work again.
Incredibly frustrating - I love CM10, but it makes my phone not really usable as a phone!
Any thoughts are appreciated!

The screen should turn off when you have it to your ear, and turn back on when you hold it in front of you in your hand.
Maybe you pressing the power button to quickly, which is messing around with the auto screen on/off function?
You could also try going into your dialer -> preferences -> changing rotation options
screen shuts off during call - FIXED
THANK YOU! I hadn't even though that rotation options would have anything to do with the screen being on or off, but apparently it does!
For reference: in the default dialer: settings > Dialpad Settings > Enable sensor orientation
Fixed my problem!

Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off the display while in a call? On my HTC Touch Pro I was able to just press the power button to achieve this - but on the Hero the power button is also the hang up button.
Any ideas?
Actually it's supposed to turn off automatically.
IMO the problem isn't turning the screen off during a call, it's turning it back on when needed.

I agree completely... Is an annoying issue that display go away on call because if you need something, ie keyboard or see call duration you need to do something for have it back.
Why not try this app, which you shake to wake the screen - not tired it myself but worth a go
Shake Awake
If the screen goes blank during a call you can simply press the menu button to wake up the screen again. Just tested that and it works fine.
Still, it would be nice to be able to turn it off when I want and not have to wait for it to time out to switch the display off.
You can also press the answer button to wake screen while in a call.
As to shake-it-to-wake-it, with the non-stick coating on the device I would probably be likely to launch it out of my hand !!! haha
Sprint Hero
I just picked up a Spring HTC Hero this weekend and am finding the same problem. When I place the phone up to my ear the screen does not shut off. However since the end button is also the same button used to turn off the screen, I'm in a catch 22.
For now I have to wait for the screen to time out. Turning the screen back on is not an issue as many have mentioned.
Does anyone know how to stop the screen from turning off during a call?
Move the phone away from your head?
Otherwise, why would you need it to be one when you're talking on it?
turn on the speaker, i think that disables the sensor.
This is a huge problem with 2.1.
In Android 1.5 on the Eris, you could push the TRACKBALL during a call to wake up the screen.
In 2.1, you only have two options. Pull the phone away from your head (often works, but not always, especially if you're trying to get through a phone tree, and often going back to the screen) or push the 'End' button.
If your phone's screen has been off LONG enough, the 'end' button will wake it up.
If it hasn't, the 'end' button will both wake up the screen AND END THE CALL!
It's a huge risk, and unnecessary. THE MINUTE the OTA comes out, I'm calling HTC about it, and asking them.
Oh, and for what it's worth, Screebl Lite takes care of this.
Just set up Screebl, mine is like 20-90 degrees for both portrait and landscape, and for the in-call activity, I have it not be active when up to my ear.
Screebl works GREAT to keep the screen on properly during a call.
Still calling HTC about it. That functionality should be built in better, or at least give me a way to wake up the screen when it gets stuck.
That is exactly my problem. When i go to wake it up to navigate the through menu options it hangs up alot. Very irritating! I will try Screebl.
Thanks!
you can also press any of the two volume buttons and that will wake it up without any bad effect except for a volume change.
Good tip about the volume buttons, I wasn't aware of that trick.
thanks
sometimes my phone won't wake up when I pull it away from my ear, but I usually just move my hand over the prox sensor and then back and it generally wakes up.
Keep Screen
This is a good thread. I had this problem too. After reading your posts I used the copy of KeepScreen that I already had and it worked also! May be my imagination but proximity sensor seems more responsive too.
I have cm 7.2
2.3.7
This is kind of odd. When the screen sleeps or if I turn it off myself, then when I try to wake it by using the power button or volume rocker button, the screen will turn on for half a second, then go blank. Its still on lock screen cause the home buttons are lit and I have to wait a few seconds for it to time out and try again. Its kind of hit or miss. Doesn't always do this. I've deleted dalvik, etc. I use screbbl pro. It never did any of this till CM, so I figure its associated with this somehow. Thoughts?
i recently got another note 2 and when im in the middle of texting someone or doing other things the screen just goes dead(screen still on) and im unable to press anything. the screen and not even the soft keys or home button work, but when i turn the screen off and back on it goes back to being normal. what could be wrong with this device?

Sorry I am not familiar with this. Sometimes though my screen does become unresponsive when trying to pull up the keyboard to text or to email someone. I hit the "input" area again and again but no response. Then if I power off the screen, and turn it back on and then go to the data input area, it magically works again. BUT, I can move up/down and the home button and everything works.
- It should be noted that I am running Beans 20 on vzw.

iv tried multiple roms so i believe its not a rom issue.
I'm new to the V10 -- my old beloved Note 4 was quickly unravelling so I traded it in for this phone. Other than the loss of the stylus, I quite like it. The second screen is neat. The fingerprint scanner works much better than the Note 4's ever did. All in all I'm fine with it.
(Haven't rooted it yet. Eventually.)
I have run into an issue that's a little confounding, though. Occasionally -- about once a week since the last OTA update -- the screen will "sort of" freeze. By "sort of" I mean the phone is obviously still running (I can turn the display on and off) but I'm unable to navigate by touch. The UI elements don't respond, I can't swipe away windows, I can't access notifications...
...my Note 4 used to do this occasionally, and what I'd have to do is long-press the power button for 8-10 seconds, which would force it to turn off, then turn it back on, and life would go on. The V10 doesn't do that -- when I long-press the power button for 8-10 seconds, I get that stupid V10 voice control program (I call it stupid because it hilariously misinterprets my voice commands - my daughter and I basically turn it on whenever we want to be amused by a big dumb phone). In short, there seems to be no way to force the phone to shut down through hardware other than pulling the battery... which is what I wind up doing, but it's weird that there's no way to force a shutdown with the power button.
Is there a way to change this in the settings anywhere? Or would I need to root the phone and load a custom rom for that?
Thanks for any help you can provide...
Try long pressing the power button and the volume down at the same time...that works for me
I can remove and put the battery back in faster than i can long press to reboot.
Also a factory reset after an ota is recommended. It might fix the freezing problem.
