While this is bad news for us, how many people are actually going to be able to sit back and not run to the store to purchase this phone the day it is released.
If enough people had the will power to stay away maybe it would send a message to HTC, but I don't think we have that kind of will power. To add to that, I believe the EVO and now the EVO 3d sell extrememly well to people who have no idea what rooting even means and just enjoy the phone for what it is.
I still think we are in the minority when it comes to these things.....So the sales numbers will let HTC know if this has any effect on it but I say the EVO 3d still sells strong.
Won't be for long lol someone will get in and do all sorts of good.

Meh, I've noticed recently that stock seems to perform better than most/all custom ROMs anyway. Perhaps this way I'll spend less time messing around with my phone... As long as I can get partial root to remove bloatware I'll be fine and I'm confident this wont be an issue.
On another note, I think this statement is BS: "It seems HTC has finally caved to what are likely the security demands of wireless carriers with its newest phones, and is locking down its handsets Moto-style..."
It has yet to be confirmed that bootloaders are being locked at the request of carriers. The argument against tethering is invalid because full root is not required to run root access wireless tethering apps. I think this is solely the decision of manufacturers- why they are making this decision, I don't know...

Umm, after news like that, I expct it to be a little uhh echo-y in those forums . Unless someone wants to flex their signed bootloader cracking skills in there.
I am still getting this device day one. If I decide I can't live without full root then I'll return it and wait for something else. Can't lose with Sprint's 30 day satisfaction guarantee.

I agree 100%, but this doesn't change the fact that htc is telling an entire committed of supportive (and vocal) customers to go stick it unnecessarily. While they don't care if they lose my business, I am disappointed in them and will likely end up going with another manufacturer.

So ultimately what does this mean to the layman? Will it just take longer for full root to become available?

If its anything like the droids - you'll eventual have root if theres a exploit but full custom kernels are thrown out the window, so are full custom roms. All you'll have is minor superficial modifications to the official ROM. That means that you'll only taste a new version of Android if HTC/Sprint officially releases it for the 3D. That also means no CM, no MIUI, no ported ROMs.

I have seen some people saying HTC is still considering their policy on their bootloaders even after they announced they will unlock it. Motorola is pushing out unlocked bootloaders as we speak.
If we do not keep pressuring HTC to release this update it will get put off for a long time... Let's keep the fire lit under them by continuing to post on their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/HTC
Also remember to keep this petition alive: http://www.groubal.com/htc-bootloaders-and-nand/
I know they have already promised this to us, but we need to make sure they are going to follow up on it instead of just telling us what we want to hear to shut us up. Remember to please be professional and mature when voicing your opinion. Let's keep the attention drawn to this issue before it gets moved to the back burner. Their facebook is a great way to maintain awareness about this. Viva la resistance!

Some people have said they have received this email from HTC, they posted it on HTC's facebook page.
This is What an HTC Representative emailed me :
I understand that you are wondering when the Sensation will have its boot loader unlocked. We’re pleased to announce that we have heard everyone’s comments and constructive suggestions and have decided to go forward with this initiative. We currently don’t have information regarding which existing phones will be unlocked, though as it was part of the initial outcry it seems likely (I don’t have any solid information I can confirm because the policy is still being somewhat reviewed internally. Keep an eye on our official website and official social media outlets for announcements about which phones will be bootloader unlocked and when.
Just stay out of the dev section bugging them when will it be rooted, I think its very rude and not helping the cause at all.
Thought more people would care about this...
I just posted on their wall. Everyone do the same

Think that statement if true is B.S. When HTC made that announcement to not lock the bootloaders, the EVO 3D was a future phone. And I would almost say false information to deceive us into buying it with the belief that the bootloader would be unlocked by HTC.

Using the hotspot is a big reason it is not unlocked. The carriers want more of your money. Speed and battery life need to be the reasons.

Instead of answering that question I would like to offer advice instead. There are a lot of people on Ebay that are selling used devices that are in mint condition, and have all the box, documentation, and what not, you could message each seller to find out what hboot it is. Obviously most of them will need to be told how to find that out for you.
The benefit of this is a cheaper buy, and you get what you want and your son won't know it isn't brand new, or be able to explain to him why you had to go that route. I think unless you are getting refurbished (and not even then sometimes) will you get hboot 1.4.
Hope I helped, cheers!

I have an upgrade as of December 1st and radio shack has the 3D on sale for $100 with a 2 year extension. I can't really beat that price on eBay. If it comes with hboot 1.5 its not really a big deal, just more of a hassle. I just have to read up on flashing using fastboot. If anything I will learn something new. Thanks for your input though.

Unless you just get extremely lucky, a new 3D, purchased from a brick and mortar store, or even online, from the same stores, will have hboot 1.5 on it. It looks like TeamEvil is close to having an S-OFF solution for the 1.5 hboot, so it might not matter what Hboot you have soon. No watermarked bootloader for me, thank you very much.
hboot 1.50 here, no biggie, not really a issue for ME. I have watermarked bootloader, blah blah blah. lol

Yeah you are quite right about that, definitely can't beat that for a new device (the 3D anyhow). Are you going for the 3D for him because of that upgrade price? For slightly more you could upgrade to something better. The 3D is going to die soon in terms of developer support, there aren't that many to begin with but specially with better hardware already out, or coming out soon the 3D while still young, is going to die off.
for that price you cant really beat it... 1.5 is a pain in the ass but it still works fine... maybe consider saving ur upgrade for the next "evo" instead?

I don't agree with this 100%. There is a lull in development, though, but mainly because cyanogenmod doesn't have any nightlies for the 3D (I think there's an alpha, but the thread is closed, and I can't find it on goo-inside.me). Also, with ICS just being released, devs are at work making a rom available.
Just look at the evo 4G. It's still going strong 18 months after release. Once CM gets going with CM9, and some more sense 3.5+ roms are leaked, preferably with some Wimax love, we should be seeing more roms.
This is just my opinion, and I could be wrong....so don't take what I say personal

That is a possibility, I do agree we will see a little more developer activity with sense 3.5, ICS, cm being used as a base when it is more complete, etc. however I meant things a little differently. While the 3D isn't the least popular device among users or developers it hasn't had the type of device that has received extraordinary development that a lot of other devices have even from the beginning of its release. The 4g started out so popular because it was a revolutionary device from sprint. The first 4g phone, and several other never before seen features so it started out so popular, and remains relevant because the hardware it has is still relevant. So the 4g was a special case. Aside from being 3D, which is really just a gimmick, the 3D didn't bring any revolutionary hardware or never before seen features to us, so it started out with less interest, and now the hardware is being beat by the latest devices, and devices coming soon. So aside from the things already mentioned that may give a little bump from A SELECT GROUP of developers it will die quickly. After the excitement of ICS and sense 3.5+ wears off the development of it will fade as less and less people still have it and developers get newer, better, more exciting, and popular devices.
Just like you, this is more of my educated guess and perception than fact, but I am willing to bet it is/will be fact soon.

I am going with the 3D because that's what he wants. He also said he was interested in the new nexus but I am not really a fan of Samsung. My first android was the moment and that left a bad taste in my mouth. Although I did learn allot about flashing roms and kernels with the POS. It forced me to learn. I would just hold off on my upgrade for the next HTC phone but I dont see one in the near future with the release of the evo design.

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with the Samsung device. If the 3D is what he wants, that's cool. No more explanation needed, I had wondered if this was your decision or his. I hope you get that new evo design soon. Until then, plenty more can be done with the 3D to improve it. It certainly is not a bad phone, I like the hardware, it does what it should do. I definitely think some new software and features would really take things up a notch!

He didn't really say wich one he wanted more. He wants the nexus because its a google phone and he wants the 3D because of the 3D camera. Personally I wouldn't get the nexus because its a Samsung but if he didn't like the 3D function so much I would get him the nexus.

Which carrier is your son on now? If he is on Verizon, I'd just stay, and wait for the Nexus, which could be released in the next week and a half. If your son is on Sprint, get the 3D, or even consider the Epic Touch 4G (Galaxy S2). It may be made by Samsung, but it's a far cry from the moment of 2009. I see listings on craigslist, of people wanting to trade their 3D for an Epic Touch 4G all the time (even one made by me....).

It is ok, you can say it, you hated the piece of **** and you want the engineers that designed it to burn in a Christmas pageant fire. That will keep the topic on point for the holidays lol. The 3D camera is a neat little gimmick, but that's what it is, a gimmick. When glasses free 3D gets to the point of being very widespread, like all devices can display it regardless of being able to capture it, and the brightness, vivid color, and HD resolution comes along then we can consider it too cool to pass up. Even without the 3D, the hardware is still good so hopefully when that excitement wears off he will still be happy with it lol

Lucky kid!
Swyped from mah 3vo!
Guys n Gals we are all aware that our phone doesnt have much developement ..
We dont even have a moderator now who is actively participating..
We have two major problems
1. No s-off
2. Not much rom developers, kernal developers
A lot of you guys have been doing donations but without any directions..
This thread is to decide what we want more ??
I WOULD LIKE ALL GUYS TO REPLY FOR THIS POLL , THEN AFTER THE RESULT WE WILL TAKE DECISIONS ON DONATIONS FOR S-OFF OR ROM DEVELOPERS??
both of them!
development will stay stagnant without s-off. you want development, you NEED s-off. unless of course you love sense based roms
It depends whats more important to you ?
Sense roms can be awsome too !!
We can donate to rcmix 3d team or some sensation team , who have been doind this thing ??
CAN U GUYS SEARCH FOR A GUY WHO HAS DONE S-off AND ROM DEVELOPMENT BOTH ??
we need s-off to get better roms. so im going with s-off, then roms lol
This is the best forum site for help with most devices, but this Amaze Forum has really become abandoned by most of the dev community (thanks to the devs still here). But since XBoarder and Binary left, I'm starting to get horrible flashbacks of the Thrive forums that ended up getting buried in the depths of xda, and I've since had to go elsewhere for development. Now I feel, other than NRGZs ROM(s), there isn't much on xda for this device so now I have to go elsewhere for development. It's unfortunate but xda and the whole community purpose is lost imho in the Amaze forums. I miss the mt4g days smh

Not to sound pessimistic guys, but I don't think we're going to be seeing S-Off for the Amaze any time soon
Since the HTC One is coming to T-Mobile, I'd imagine a lot of people would jump ship, leaving the Amaze behind with an even smaller community
That being said, S-Off is really the top priority here. It's the only chance for us to get more devs over here
Why would anyone jump ship to another phone that is locked. They will most likely use the same security or better on it since we haven't hacked the security on the amaze yet.

Because it has better hardware? Because it will most likely see Jellybean 5.0 whereas our Amaze will probably not? And most importantly, because it's the first phone HTC is releasing after they admitted that they favored quantity over quality of their phones and will change that in 2012?
The upcoming HTC One series mobile phones will be a part of their flagship phones - there's a reason that they stole the show at MWC, which means that there will be more development for it, resulting in a higher chance of achieving S-Off.
Where have you heard of the HTC Amaze 4G? Have you seen how many devs we have in this section of the XDA forums?

The upcoming HTC One series mobile phones will be a part of their flagship phones - there's a reason that they stole the show at MWC, which means that there will be more development for it, resulting in a higher chance of achieving S-Off.
Where have you heard of the HTC Amaze 4G? Have you seen how many devs we have in this section of the XDA forums?

they would honestly have to be dumb, or just have spare money. either way, by getting the amaze they should have learned not to get another htc lol.
by the time the one series almost achieves s-off htc will announce another phone. it ALWAYS happens. when I had my mytouch 3g slide it was close to getting s-off then htc announced the mytouch 4g. I jumped to it, then right when I bought that a week or so later I checked on the mytouch 3g slides forum and they just got s-off lol. guess that's just my experience with htc phones though
and wasn't the amaze htcs new flagship phone with the "best camera in the mobile phone market blah blah".. then got discontinued a few months later?
i say s-off then we could port roms from the sensation or other base htc devices,
and kernels we need to push HTC harder or at least somebody can figure it out better when s-off its available

The amaze isn't discontinued... only the "White" version is.
I don't own an Amaze right now, but honestly s-off gets you easier kernel flashing, more devs, but honestly Nrgz is an amazing developer, and Xboarder is doing his stuff too.
Jellybean? Barely any phone has a official Ics right now and everyone is worrying about jellybean..
Think about what the phone is now, a top of the line smart phone from one of the best companies.
Not what it will be in a year.
HTC listened once and unlocked the bootloader, I'm hoping they'll listen again and completely unlock our phones. (Well your phones since my Dinc is S-off)

Hello all thanks for stopping by. I have recently moved and settled to a new area and I bought my wife's and my phone straight out so we can switch at any time (or kill the contract if we moved outta the country). My android phones thus far have been the htc hero, lg optimus s, and the evo 3D. I got the evo 3d last june because I thought that it'd be like the original (tons of support, the next big thing, a crap ton of of mods). Little did I know that they would keep a lot of the drivers closed sourced and we as a community would have a few fantastic deves but would also run devs away (not just talking about the kernel devs over the past year quite a few have dropped by then been bashed and left). So my big question to everyone and indeed what I am pondering is.... Jump to a SIII as HTC and Sprint abandoned us or give HTC another shot? Both phones will have the same processor but im worried about samsung's build quality ...however I dont want htc to get my money blindly .... or i can just wait...? I dunno ...lol what is everyone else's thoughts?

Ya know what? Screw HTC!!! I only got the 3d cuz I knew, or at least thought, it would be getting ics. Turns out, now I'm in the us on Sprint mind u, that I really don't think that's going to happen anymore and I'm not going to sit around and wait. Yeah I could've downgraded hboot and rooted but I just thought intentionally bricking my device was absolutely foolish and didn't trust it. So I got the gsII and within min was running a fully rooted Sprint ics leak so easily my 3 yr.old could've done it! And with the size of this screen, the super amoled display, and speed, and boy do I mean speed of.this device, I will never, ever, buy another HTC device again! Just my two cents lol!

How's the GPS on the gsII? I've never seen any Samsung with decent GPS or signal.

Sprint is the issue. They are the final step before ICS is released. Follow the order: Google releases Android to the manufacturer > HTC tweaks it an adds Sense > HTC sends to carrier. HTC is not necessarily the blame here. There is a few threads dedicated to the speculation of the ICS release. IMO, it's still coming, but, just from the timing of things, they most likely delayed it so as not to conflict with the release of their new flagship, EVO 4G LTE (pushing more people to upgrade to that).
With the amount of reading and diving in to other forums because people ask me about their phones or I have actually rooted their phones, I prefer HTC phones regardless of the Evo 3D's lack of official ICS ROM (even though there is a VM leak and three ports available for it, one of those ports is a fully functional HTC Sense 3.5, which is what I am running) and the HBOOT 1.5 [email protected] (even though it's also mentioned that having HBOOT 1.5, rooted, S-ON and recovery 4EXT is the way to go).
I prefer the Sense interface. It's my preference. I love the ease of rooting (in most circumstances). I've had my experience of rooting a Samsung Captivate. It was eh. It was easy to root, but, when it came to custom stuff, just eh.

GPS works fine. My wife prefers Samsungs and has the GSII. We've used her GPS several times around Savannah, GA and locally where we live and around Atlanta with no issue. Actually performed better than my Evo 3D at times.
It's more about what you like. I've had the hero, og evo, and now 3d. I still have a epic 4g I got for Christmas and my experience wasn't all that great with it until cm came along. I despise touchwiz although its getting better. Sense does make HTC phones run a little slower cause its a resource hog, but I just love sense. I suggest looking at both and deciding on what you are more comfortable with. Both the s3 and evo lte are great

HTC or Samsung GIII
I'd have to, IMO, that the HTC is worth staying with HTC. I too thought about switching over to the SGIII but in the end, I'm going to stick it out with HTC, as the EVO 3D was my first HTC device and I will say I'm a little disappointed with their support of the device. I'll give them another chance with the EVO 4G LTE and see what happens. After all, I plan on being a smart phone user for way more than the standard 2 yr contract and will switch devices in the future if need be.
HTC has great devices and I can't stand hearing "3d will not get ics"
It's been confirmed. There are processes that have to be done before it will be out. I have seen new phones coming out with ics yes, but how many older devices have gotten officially updated yet. My buddy with T-Mobile who still hasn't seen his update. People just don't have any patience. If your on xda u have the ability to run ics. Either do it or wait.

Um t-mobile gsII just got ics last night and where and when did Sprint Ever say the 3d was getting ics? I've been scouring the Web for months waiting for word and have never seen or heard Sprint officially say this. Correct me if I'm wrong.
