Jellybean differences on Xoom and Nexus7 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I GEDified my UK wifi Xoom yesterday and now have JB (4.1.1) on both my Nexus7 and Xoom.
Interestingly the Xoom doesn't have the dock locked to the side like the N7. In fact it doesn't have a dock. I like the dock on the N7 though, especially with Nova launcher (which turns the icons in landscape mode).
So I got Nova for the Xoom and it gives it a dock. Nice. And if you rotate it to landscape mode it rotates the dock down to the bottom, which doesn't happen on the N7. I guess JB knows it's on a larger tablet and so doesn't lock the dock to the side.
Just thought people should know.

The Nexus7 is running in "phablet" layout. It still has the stats bar and on screen keys separated and yet has apps in the tablet layout.

[Q] external physical keyboard recommendations?

I'm looking for a good physical keyboard for the Flyer. (It can be a dock, like the Samsung accessory for the Galaxy Tab, or just a bluetooth keyboard.) Any recommendations? Thanks

I've been using the Apple bt keyboard. It works but it's not ideal. So consider it an anti-recommendation but it will work in a pinch.

I have heard that this works and is relatively inexpensive

Thanks for the tip. I saw that in a store, but I had not started looking for a physical keyboard for the Flyer at that time... so I didn't think about using it for this purpose.
I can see that it would work for organizing the Flyer and the Apple BT keyboard. I do have the Apple BT keyboard, so it's good to know that it will work.
I'm watching this review of the Incase Origami Workstation now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UsnGxXqVdk
Even though it is not expensive, it is still a high price for some covered cardboard with velcro on it. haha.
I tried the Xoom keyboard from Motorola. You have to follow the computer pairing instructions instead of the ones for Xoom.
The keyboard generally works fine but the android keys - back, home, etc - do not. Definitely suboptimal but enough for typing an email.
My experience

Actually i've been using mine with Apple's BT keyboard and it works like a charm!! All i have to do is turn on bluetooth for both devices and they pair straight up (after initial setups of course) The only downside i have is that the keyboard D-pad input is locked in vertical orientation (so when you type "up" it'll end up being "right" in horizontal orientation) and also that you can't type in other languages even using english based input (Japanese Roomaji or Chinese Pinyin) But otherwise, it's a beautiful keyboard that matches the colour to the flyer very well
I can say that the igo keyboard does not work. My flyer will see it, but I can't pair nor connect. It is very disappointing -_-

I am using a keyboard case originally for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 inch on clearance for 24.99 from ThinkGeek
The android keys work except the back key. Flyer fits well. Camera does not quite line up. Pairing is quick. Reconnection works well - turn keyboard off then on instead of using link key.
Problem is capacitive buttons are covered up and with back button not working it is sometimes a pain. Wonder if capacitive buttons can be locked at bottom (in portrait mode) or to right in landscape mode?
I just ordered the Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard off of amazon. When I get it I will post up a review.

I've been using the logitech bt keyboard. I haven't had any issues (except while the tablet is in landscape while type the up/down arrows are used to go side to side), but that it. Other than that I've really taken a liking to the logitech.
I bought this one for my Nook Color:
http://www.amazon.com/Verbatim-9753...2E/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1313406417&sr=8-16
Anyone tried it on the Flyer?
It works on the NC, mostly, though does exhibit erratic behavior from time to time (repeating "stuck" keys and such). Buth the Nook was never intended to have bluetooth to begin with, so I'm not sure thath would be a problem with other devices. I'm curious because I'm seriously considering buying a Flyer one of these days.
I just got the Verbatim last week. Pairs and reconnects quickly. "Home" and "menu" keys do not work. Volume keys work. Arrow keys work well in portrait orientation. Occasionally repeats characters like a key gets stuck - especially when hitting the keys hard. A soft touch works better. Folds nicely and fits in my coat pocket and came with a case. Cheaper than the Freedom keyboard.

Got my flyer on Friday and have had a chance to play with the keyboard. So far it is working well. I haven't noticed the key repeating problems I had with the Nook Color. OTOH, I've only spent a few minutes with it.
So far, though, I think this is probably the bluetooth keyboard bargain. It's fairly portable and typed reasonably well. It's not as comfortable as a full size keyboard, but I can easily see myself getting used to it.
This keyboard works for me. Directional arrows move the right direction. Can type in notes app. Can't seem to navigate my folder shortcuts on homescreen, though.

Edit: 2/2/12. Above link seems to now be for USB version of keyboard. The Bluetooth version which works with my Flyer is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZJEUBI/ref=wms_ohs_product
Anyone figure out how to fix the arrow key issues yet?

Has anyone gotten a Bluetooth keyboard working fully on Android 2.3?
I'm using the slim mac bluetooth keyboard, works great! And slim! Except my view is black and the Mac keyboard would definitely suit the Flyer more, but oh well.

I have the Bluetooth version of this (the one link has a receiver dongle) and it's very nice for a small keyboard. When I was a big keyboard I use the Apple BT keyboard, the aluminum one, which I use with my laptop when it's docked.

[Q] Can you use the prime as a tablet with dock attached?

Can you use the prime as a tablet only with the keyboard dock attached? What I mean is can you attach the keyboard backwards so the keyboard is covered by the tablet and you're only adding the additional battery? Or fold the keyboard completely over and turn it off so even if you press a key it doesn't register?
Not something I'd do always but it'd be a nice feature to have as an option.
No this isn't possible.

Thanks guys. That's too bad; oh well, not a deal breaker but it would have been nice.
The EEE slider seems more of an option that you might like. Though it has last years specs. Maybe a new one is on the way?

[Q] Invert scrolling on dock trackpad?

So Apple has me into the whole "inverted" scrolling on trackpads... now I can't get used to it being one way on my prime and another on my macbook.
The hard solution is sell the mac and buy a new laptop...
The easier solution... is there a way to invert it on the prime?
Try Settings-> Asus Customized settings. Then on the cursor option, change to gesture mode. I think that will yield the results you're looking for.
Indeed it does... however it also changes the mouse cursor to a giant circle?
Can you uninvert it on the Mac? Then your Mac and prime will match too.

I just wished that swiping on the keyboard acted the same as it does on the Prime itself! Lol, I hate going from moving my hand one way on the screen to the opposite way on the trackpad.
I'm already used to it, but I shouldn't have had to get that way: seems counter-intuitive this way doesn't it?
yes. its annoying.
Just get an external mouse. 30 bucks and I can use the scrollwheel too.

Um. Why? No, I have plenty of wireless mice, but then why did I buy a $150 dock with a trackpad? In some situations I do use a mouse/keyboard, but that still solves nothing about the trackpad swiping - you don't swipe side to side with a mouse wheel.

Asus Android keyboard versus stock keyboard

Hi
Does anyone else find the Asus android keyboard is very laggy and misses characters when you type quickly?
I just switched my prime to use the stock android keyboard and it seems much better. However I liked the layout of the Asus one better, and it had larger buttons.
Just curious...
The Asus keyboard isn't very good. You should take a look on the market. There's tons of keyboards there.

+1 for thumb keyboard.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am am trying swiftkey tablet x keyboard right now and it has a split thumb design as well which I actually like.
The thumbkeyboard doesn't have a free trial so I am hesitant to buy it without trying it. The only problem I have is the space bar is near the notification area and I hit it once in awhile stead of the keyboard.. I will keep looking.

Their are two space bars on the thumb keyboard. Left and right. But it is well worth the money. It has a dock bar at the top to add different quick keys as well. 20 to be exact.

Okay... I splurged and bought the thumb keyboard. I have to admit that this is the best out of the ones I have tested. It is very quick to respond when I type quickly. I found that swiftkey one was a little laggy sometimes.
Again... thanks for the suggestion. This keyboard makes typing ALOT easier than the stock keyboard.

Prime /w iCade ....

So this is on sale at Toys R Us for $69.

I was thinking about picking one up since I am a huge MAME fan. I love my classic arcade games. Does anyone know if this works 100% with the Prime?

I picked up one of those for even less quite a number of months ago. It works 100% with the Prime. The Mame4Droid app even has an External Controller selection for iCade. Being in my mid-40's friends are knocked out when they come over and can play Galaga, Joust, etc. with real controls.
When standing in portrait mode, the Prime is a bit taller than the iPad. As a result, it doesn't quite fit perfectly into the iCade's rest that's specifically designed for the iPad. Instead, I just set it in the channel that's in front of the mount that they put there for the iPad in landscape mode (you'll see what I mean).
THIS is really about the coolest add-on that I've gotten for my Prime.

There's only one model available. It connects via Bluetooth (brilliant design choice).
Size wise, it was designed for an iPad. The Prime works just fine, though. Heck, I was able to easily get the iCade to work just fine with my rooted Nook Color. There are zero issues with compatibility.

Cool. So size-wise the Prime fits ok? Not really sure the differences in dimensions between the Prime and iPad...
Actually, there is a 2nd model iCade. It's not in a cabinet. It's a control panel and a slot for a tablet, it will also fit both ways.
I also came across the mini iCade for ipod touch/iphone -- it works fine with the S3 as well.
Edit: Here is the link for the other one I found at the store.

Thanks, I hadn't seen this one. I like the arcade cabinet look of the other model, but this one looks more versatile in the sense that it doesn't matter whether the game is portrait or landscape... is that a real consideration for something like mame? Are there any/many games running in landscape mode?

The iCade cabinet has a shallow trough just in front of the centered stand for the iPad. This was designed to place the iPad (or Prime) in landscape mode. The back of the tablet leans against the angled sides of the cabinet. This is by design. It works wonderfully.
The only game that comes immediately to mind that's in landscape mode is Joust. Of course, that alone, is reason enough to want to do landscape mode. I'm certain there are others. I mean, MAME has thousands of games.
Lovin' the retro look

There are 100's of games that run in landscape ... some of the important ones --- Joust, Defender, Robotron, Stargate, Asteroids, all the Mortal Kombats. I could go on and on.
On a more sad note, I lost a bunch of my restored arcade cabinets during Hurricane Sandy. Out of the 14 cabinets I have -- lost 6 of them. I still have my 2 pinball machines (Getaway and High Speed).
iCade and Prime
I received one for Xmas and it worked perfectly on both my TF201 and my A100.
