Hello, I would like to know if there is any "almost" stock kernel, only with the necessary changes to allow the user to change, via SetCPU, or STweaks, etc, the voltage and frequency. Even change these values for the GPU too, as we can do with Siyah kernel.
That is, a stock but fully customizable kernel.
Best regards
U can try omega
Get Tegrak Overclock from the market (not sure if you'd need the paid version). It includes a kernel module that allows overclock on stock kernels, you only need to be rooted. Worked perfectly on the SII, and seems to be working on the S3.

+1 afaik.. its the only app that loads the overclocking module alone
Beautiful
This Tegrak is a crack!
Thanks guys!

Hey guys, new to the forum and the Vibrant, and i first want to say i love the setup and this forum is insanely informative on its own. Im fully rooted/themed/tethering/modded and the only question ive had to post was about icon .png size haha. so thanks for setting up a VERY efficient forum.
now my question: do i have to install a custom kernel in order to overclock/underclock? I installed setCPU and it wont let me scale past 800mhz. Also no presets, its just says to use conservative scaling for GalaxyS phones. No thank you, i wanna push this thing! Running stock kernel and firmware. Thanks ahead!
I believe you will need to flash one of the many kernels that fits what you want it to do, you should be able to under clock android if your phone is rooted but you will need a new kernel to overclock it.
when you install setcpu make sure you do auto-detect. since you already have it installed, hit menu->device selection->autodetect speeds
on a stock kernel you should be able to set max to 1000000mhz. With the Vibrant ALWAYS LEAVE SCALING TO CONSERVATIVE or you will have freezes.
To get past 1000000mhz you will need a custom kernel, I have been happy with both King's and JAC's. Just download one of their kernels, flash it through CWM, reboot, and run setcpu again and make it autodetect your speeds, from there you should be able to clock up to 1200000mhz
Good luck.

I'm not very familiar with kernels, so naturually im a little hesitant. What else will it affect?

It all depends on the kernel you flash. If you flash voodoo it will change the way the phones file system works. However if you just flash JAC's OC/uv kernal it will OverClock up to 1.2 ghz and UnderVolt some of the midrange frequencies to help improve batterylife. I reccomend reading up on his threads before you attempt these flashes. He has made the procedures to flash these kernels very easy to implement. Good luck and happy flashing! (That just sounds wrong!)

Moved to Q&A
Hello,
I am new to the android world. So far, I have rooted and installed the CM7 alpha to my phone. I now wish to change kernels to improve my battery life. I am planning on using the normal kernel for CM7 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021404 . To install it, I realized that I flash it in recovery. Is that all that is needed to be done for it to work properly? Do I need to set it up somehow? The thread discusses different governors for the kernel, how are they selected?
Thanks!
I figured it out and now have setCPU installed. Working good so far.
you dont need setcpu, in cyanogenmod settings go into performance and you can default the governor, etc there.
Good to know, thanks!
hello,
I'm using the official lg rom v2.2.1 that came with the phone. I wanted to update to cm7 but I read about the problem with the BT wich I must have. another thing is that I'm using hebrew and I need it to stay that way.
The thing is that the touch screen is very bad and lags a lot.
If I will upgrade only the kernel what will be the affect on the phone and how do I know what is the best kernel for my version ?
In general I want to fix the touchscreen bug and to OC the phone.
thanks for the help.
If you just want to overcome the touch screen bug then I would suggest using Der_Caveman's Kernel, it is quite old but is usable and removes the touch bug and enables OC.
The kernel wouldn't change any outward appearance of the phone, except maybe increase the quadrant score a bit. If you really want a good performance boost as well then try franco's kernel. Since you are using the stock rom it is recommended to take a nand backup before flashing these kernels. And a kernel doesn't change the system language AFAIK.
Thanks for quick reply. will these two kernels good for froyo 2.2.1 and are there known bugs that I should be aware of before updating ?
As far as read the franco's v18.1 is for 2.3.3...
I have never used Der_Caveman's kernel, but it is bug-free AFAICT. And in the link that I have posted above, franco kernel is available for both froyo and GB. Download the version that says "franco.Kernel v8.1 CFS", it is for froyo.
And as I said earlier, since you are on stock rom it is advisable to take a nand before flashing a custom kernel.
i used dookmatt's kernel which was really good for me(flashed it on stock 2.2.2)...i had no touch lag, no bugs. that would be my recomandation
also dont forget nand backup is holy!

Can I OC with this one ?
OK, I flashed Der_Caveman's Kernel and so far it looks good. the touchscreen is better and I OC to to 729 using setcpu though I cant tell the difference in terms of the speed.
how can I tell if its really 729 and not 600 ?
thanks.
yes my O1 ran at 787 mhz and it was darn stable(at 800+ i had frequent freezes and reboots when launching apps). i also had a friend of mine install this kernel and he's happy with the "new" phone i made
quick system info on market...shows cpu speed
You may look at info tab on SetCPU, it says alot about your device, CPU (frequencies and features), battery and so on.
And you can have SetCPU widget on homescreen as well, which shows current freq, min and max frequencies of the governor you're using
Regards
How can I overclock to the 1.2GHz that's supported by this kernel? Changing the governor in ICS's performance area does nothing from what I can see.
Thank you ahead of time.
Whoops, should've said that this is the USA 5.0 and I'm talking about Entropy's CWM.
Entropy's kernel already overclocks your CPU when needed.
But if you want to have more control, get TegraK.
I have mine up to 1.3 Ghz working pretty well.

And try Temp+CPU if you want to see the way your CPU changes in its frequency.
CPU Spy is useful as well.

I'd like to know this as well. Entropy's kernel which is included in the ROM is supposed to support overclocking, which it does for the gingerbread ROMs. All the ICS ROMs I've tried with his kernel included are supposed to support it but it doesn't seem to work.
When I had ICS on mine (5.0 US) it would only go up to the stock 1ghz and tegrak said the device isn't supported. Tegrak supports the device even on the stock kernel so it makes me wonder what happened. I've asked in the ICS thread a few times what happened to the OC support and never got a response.
I flashed back to a gingerbread ROM just because I couldn't get overclocking to work at all.
Overclock works in the latest ics build, Just install setcpu. In the first build doesnt works.

Well that's intriguing. I'll flash it right now.

1.2 overclock works at least, tegrak still doesn't though.. any other programs that'll allow you to go over the 1.2ghz?
Weird, when I tested ICS, TegraK worked for me very well.

I own a GTi9300 4.1.2 XXEMC2 rooted but still on stock (didn't find any advantage in any custom ROM so far) i rooted it using CFautoroot.. I didn't install CMW yet using ROM manager, but im willing to once i find a kernel that will let me overclock my phone.
So any adviced Kernel that will work on my phone to overclock? Currently SetCpu only allows me to underclock :/.
Thanks in advancee
N. B: I DONT OWN A MEMORY CARD IN CASE ITS NEEDED TO FLASH A KERNEL
check the development section for compatible kernels. all of them allow OC

Siyah Kernel up to 1.8 GHz. What app is great is stweaks it allows to select how many cores u wanna use also has a build in sound equalizer and many other cool things. But u need Siyah kernel installed for it to work.
