Could I in theory extract the apps and install them on my phone?

Not by package installer. You need to copy .apk to /system/app, set 644 permissions (rw-r--r--) and reboot.

What .apk has to do with the sms app?

Did you push it to the correct folder System/Apps and then flash the rom .
jje
Me thinks they don't know how. You need to use something like Root Explorer to put that into your System/Apps folder.
Make sure your phone is rooted.
Yes
I have an ics rom

Hey bud, sorry that apk I sent you didn't work out. I think the easiest way to get it back would be to kdz flash. You shouldn't lose any data or apps or anything in the process but be sure to backup with cwm just in case.
Oh, it's okay
I will flash kdz.
Thanks anyway

Just ask someone you see with your device p760 and get the email apk plus the odex file. Use smanager or other root file manager and move the apk and it's odex where they belong and reboot. I deleted my messenger apk and it wouldn't install with titanium backup. I had a backup of it and i moved both files back to /system/app
Note, the apk and the odex should have the same name. Example, LGEmail.apk & LGEmail.odex
Hope this helps

What would be its name? And in which folder please?
Often camera.apk or even gallery.apk and would be in /system/app
But know that not all camera apps can be used across ROMs, sometimes there are framework and lib dependencies that will result in FCs when trying to use it. As in you couldn't use a sense camera app in an aosp ROM etc
