I am still on 2.2 froyo and waiting for the official gingerbread update. I remember reading that 2.3.4 ginger bread was supposed to improve battery life.
For the people who already jumped ship and upgraded to 2.3.4, do you guys see any significant battery changes? Good or Bad?
Ever since 2.3.4 my battery sucks a lot!
my battery's about the same, but the new battery info screen is pretty awesome

My battery lasts only 8 hours with 2.3.4 and when I was using 4.1.8.3 with gingerblur 4.5 it lasted almost 12 hours. Not to happy right now

My battery has been pretty miserable after switching to 2.3.4. I'm a pretty heavy user, but before the switch, it usually lasted a whole day. Now, I'd be happy to get 10 hours. It's not so much of a problem for me, because I can usually get to an outlet to give it a bump charge during the day. I would definitely switch back to a 2.2 build if it wasn't for the CRT animation. That's probably my favorite addition to Android 2.3.
This has been discussed before and some people found that battery life is improved by freezing some social apps.
The battery on my Atrix lasts about sixteen hours.

My battery lats very long. I can go on an all day cycling trip, where I'm being gps tracked the whole time with a cycling app, location updated to the cloud on google latitude, checking in at new places I visit on foursquare and google+, taking and uploading photos along the way, some SMS, some email, etc, and I get home and the battery is at 60%.
On work days, it's off the charger at 7am, and when I go to bed around midnight it's still over 50%. WiFi on, Bluetooth on (and paired to a stereo headset to listen to music for a couple hours each day on the bus to Redmond), doing nothing at all to conserve battery.
I bought a spare battery because I just got the phone when the HKTW build leaked, and everyone was saying the battery life was atrocious. I take it with me when I'm going to be away from electricity all day, but have yet to even come close to needing it.
Mine sucked bigtime whatever i tried, so i'm back to froyo

mine too. Was not good at all even after conditioning it

To all of you experiencing horrendous battery life, did you actually look into what was consuming it? Seems like everyone loves to slam the battery life but no one says why it is so bad.

Same happening to me. My battery shows 32% then I reboot the phone and shows 53%. Very weird

Yes most battery consumption (52%) comee from phone idle than in second place is screen and the app that uses the most is pulse but only 7% and I spend lot of time using it. Reconsidering going back to 4.1.8.3

One time I did see horrendous battery life, and it was just after I installed Google+ and enabled the auto upload feature. Unbeknownst to me, it scanned my SD card and was uploading everything, not just new images. Hours of the phone being warm in my pocket should have indicated something was up.
When I checked, it was "phone idle" taking up all the battery. Those seeing phone idle high up on the list, are you on baseband 01.97.00R? I know I wasn't initially, but then flashed it wondering about 4G speeds and such. Didn't improve my speeds, but I don't see phone idle up high on my list.

I configured my Google+ instant upload feature only to start uploading when I plug the charger in and when I'm using wifi (when I get home). Currently using baseband 01.77.15P don't know what else could it be. I think its because the hktw is only a beta release

definitely very beta. The key thing to take away from all the bugs people have discovered is that it is very inconsistent. Seems like no two people experience the same set of issues.
To the OP: give it a try on a day you'll be near power, and if the battery life is poor for you after doing tweaks (like Navalynt's mod which packages up a lot of the fixes people have made), go back to 2.2. Simple enough.
I have been running it as my main build and it works fine here for battery. Been flying around and this thing has been working great. Average of about 13 hours on some good usage (watching 1 hour video podcast and a lot of audio podcasts) wifi and gps on , streamed espn for an hour and a bunch more and still working great.
THe battery has been conditioned here and there and working good but I will always check the usage and see whats eating it and freeze those that I dont need. That always helps everyone.

It's definitely worse.
Some one just tonite asked me how I can possibly get 15+ hours on a single charge using my new Amaze 4G. Just to give you a bit of background, since having the vibrant and the unofficial leaks of Froyo that popped up here and there I was always looking to improve my battery life in every which way while not comprimising my user experiance. For those that dont know, the Vibrant was stuck on Eclair for a really really long time and we resorted to building Froyo roms using the i9000 source which for some reason killed battery like you would believe. After weeks of playing and testing I came to a few generic tips that seem to drastically help (beyond the obvious things you normally would expect).
This is what I personally do and have found to work, you take them or leave them makes no differance to me whatsoever, just friendly suggestions.
The Super Duper Number 1 thing I've found to HUGELY improve my battery life was instead of using gsm (4g/3g/edge) I use Wifi whenever possible. Most of my time is spent at home or work where I have routers. For whatever reason using wifi is less taxing on the battery then gsm. Also changing the wifi sleep policy to never will add to this.
Since i spend most my day inside i keep my brightness relatively low. I do not use auto brightness unless I really need to.
Obviously I keep my gps off unless I absolutely need it.
Sense has some neat power saving features to help with sync settings at certain times... i.e. during my sleeping time, it automatically change my sync to every 2 hours rather then every 15 min like its typically set to during the day.
The few steps above have helped me acheive 15+ hours on a single charge. Some other things that should help even more would be:
Limit the number of widgets you run (especially the ones that constantly update)
Dont use Live Wallpaper
Extend your sync intervals on email and social apps... instead of every 10 move to every 20
make sure when you are away from wifi you turn your wifi off
If you are in an area with poor coverage (especially 4g) turn your data to edge only
Not sure about LCD but on my samoled keeping screen colors to darkest possible (black wallpapers, etc) helps conserve a bit
Change you timeout setting to the lowest you can stand possible (15sec, 30sec)
Avoid task killer apps... let the system do its job or use the built in task killer for those apps you wish to close. (I know the verdict is out on whether they help or not, but I believe using auto app killers does more damage then good, they were designed for old android versions that didnt function the way GB does now)
That's it for now... if I can remember or think of any more I will def post. Like I said you can take or leave my advice. Please do me one favor.... if you DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING POSITIVE TO ADD THEN KEEP YOUR NEGATIVTY TO YOURSELF. It makes for a happier forum! Thanks

I've heard this also WiFi + radio drains more than just radio unless you have a crappy connection then you are better.off with wifi. Gr8 guide tho .... Use less sync people the weather is the same as it was 2h ago.... Unless its raining

WiFi barely uses any battery. I can 24 hours out my amaze with only WiFi. 4G is a real battery drain

To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly: 1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more 2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour 3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well.

drag down the notification tab click on quick settings click on total memory.
Radio by itself drains more battery then using wifi + radio... trust me i've been doing it for 2+ years. also had all my team mates do the same and they all confirmed a huge boost in battery. as long as you are CONNECTED to a wifi router it will not drain. now if you leave the wifi and keep it on along with radio on, that will totally demolish your battery. its the constant searching on both parts that eats the most battery. if youre solid connected... its no longer searching.
I did all that and then some and my battery shows 120 to 200 MA in standby . I used to have htc hd2 and it had 3 to 5 MA in standby . I don't know what to disable anymore , Or is this normal for this phone ?
Juice Defender is the best way to conserve battery on any android phone.... try it out on the app market. doing all these other tips you mentioned does help very little. but if you wish to have your battery last a lot longer then Juice Defender is the way to go...

I was going to post the same thing, and found this here - lol. I have been trying this for a few days already.
I will add some minor modifications though. The above was done when devices and batteries were smaller. The 8 hours might be enough - see if the light changes from amber to green by then (or the battery indicator) - otherwise wait.
Then also wait on the 1st 1 hour charge while off if the light is still amber at one hour - wait until it is green. Ditto on the second one.
I did it just like the original above, and when I turned my phone on at the end - it was at 93%, so I plugged it in until it hit 100% for a while, disconnected, and then did a battery calibration (APP) at 100%
Again - I think with the bigger battery it takes longer. on a MT4G, the light was green at the end of each hour (smaller battery).
I have seen a significant improvement - and I already had battery saving profiles set up with SETCPU. I may do it one more time the way I modified it above.
PS - I always get better life on WiFi (If connected). Also, a friend lives in a weak (data) signal area, and when not on WiFi, keeping it on 2g (edge) really upped her life on a MT4G

I mainly posted that for proof of concept. The only way I ever got what I wanted out of a battery was through SBC kernels. That's one reason way I am leaving the Evo and switching to the Amaze, outside of the crap Sprint puts customers through.
Is the Ultimate app worth it?
Hell yea it's worth it. Because without it when your device is asleep it's still connected to 4g and whatever else. But with juice defender it turns off everything the moment you put the phone to sleep saving you a lot battery for when you really need to use your phone so yes. Its a must I feel like it should be mandatory on every android phone.

x2 on that... It really gives you a longer battery life. and having 2 batteries also extends the life to 24 hours + of not having to sit and wait for a full charged battery.
If you want to see your Sense force closing after every restart + plus having other problems such as frozen clock, etc, then use Juice Defender. After a week of constant problems caused by this app (and I was using it on the Balance mode), I was that close to returning my Amaze, because initially I thought there was some software defect, till one day I googled it and found out the real reason. Uninstalled it and my problems disappeared at once (actually I did a factory reset just to make sure its all gone). Just a fair warning.

Been on it for a week and and I haven't seen those type of problems and I'm using aggressive...
I was using Ultimate v. 3.80, tried it on my girlfriend's phone (she was using the free version before I installed the ultimate), started force closing too (she was about to kill me haha)... Check out this thread:

P.s. Juice Defender team said the problem occurs with Plus and Ultimate because they use API call, which is incompatible with Android compatibility test suite... Im just saying all this so if people start getting these launcher force closes after restart, not to freak out and just uninstall it...

Hey,
I just got my new Samsung GT-I9300 international version.
I have the XXALF2 Build, I didn't install much apps at all (Temple Run and app built by me).
I drained the battery until the end - then charged it to 100%.
I synced only my google account, and I have weird batter drain when wi-fi is on and phone in sleep.
Every something around 10 minutes the battery drops in 1%, and it's very weird because on my Captivate, if I let my phone stay with wi-fi it was about 2% every hour which is pretty normal.
When I look at battery stats I see Cell Standby with something like 50% and I really don't know why.
I got my new micro sim today and yesterday the phone was without sim and with wifi and still drained battery and showed high cell standby.
Should I make some kind of calibration on my battery? Is someone else having this problem?

This is well documented already with plenty of threads as well as a fix. A search will bring you lots of results.
It's actually a reporting error and not really draining your battery. It's been fixed on the newer firmwares.
You'll need to dig further to find out what is actually draining your battery. Given it's still new it'll probably settle in a few days.

Yes, I found the fix of the xml file in the framework. I'm really sorry for not searching before, my bad.
But still, is there something that drain the battery because 1% every 10 minutes is not good at all. Now I see Android System right after screen.
I didn't installed anything yet, so I'm afraid to think what will happen in the future when more apps will be added.
Do you have some recommendation of first steps I should do with the new battery?

To see if it's wifi related, at night switch off wifi and test. Maybe even switch off data to see what happens. But as I said, it's still probably a bit early to really tell. My phone took a while to settle. Or maybe it was the custom kernal I installed (siyah).

Ok I flashed XXBLG8 and the problem gone! Battery is really great, the phone was on sleep, with wifi off and mobile data on, and only 1% was down after a hour!! I guess the previous build was buggy. Thanks everybody
Ok - I think that the problem is with wi-fi.
With wi-fi the battery is drained very quick on sleep and with mobile data the battery holding fine.
Mobile data suppose to drain the battery more quickly than wi-fi so it must be a bug with wifi.

Taking a close look at the long battery review thread, while there is a lot of information there regarding individual battery usage, the screen-on and overall usage times vary by a lot. It is impossible to draw conclusions regarding why the results vary so much, because most people did not give enough relevant information there.
I think it will be very interesting if we all used the same *comprehensive* method to compare our battery usage. We could really discover important things about our individual usage and how it compares to others (and how to make it even better).
It is important to note that when battery life is low (in comparison to other G2 users), sometimes this could be because we are taxing our device with heavy usage (and nothing is actually wrong), but other times something is definitely wrong (wakelocks, bad phone reception, etc.). This thread will help each and every one of us (that get lower than expected battery life) understand which of these two possibilities is correct for him (something wrong VS taxing usage).
In order to do this, let's use the excellent "GSam Battery Monitor" app, which could be downloaded freely from the Play Store.
Please post your results when your battery becomes low (around 10 percent), after it was fully charged.
If you want an accurate opinion about your battery behavior, with tips on how to improve things, please provide all the attached screens (please provide the graph image in landscape mode, and sort it by "other"):
Is this really necessary? The G2 has a fat battery. But any amount of power can be drained if you drain it. Enough said.

I say let's give this a shot. This phone has a beefy battery indeed, but still, some of us are posting 7 hours screen-on times, while some of us only 4. Let's see what this thread will provide us with. I have a good hunch this will be a very revealing thread.

Okay Well in the interest of troubleshooting good luck. I get 1.5 days easily with a good amount of music play. I always suggest people delete the Facebook app and use it in the browser, and disable data/sync while you're in a bad reception building/area

Yep, these are some solid good general advices.
I could only drain the battery to 50% today, so I'm posting this for now to get this thread running (and tomorrow I'll post the 10% results). It's funny because I have no trouble finishing the battery everyday, yet today it's giving me "problems". It's like it knows it is being monitored, and the battery hogs are afraid of being greenified...
Let's get over my results in the main screen:
Phone: yes, I did not use the phone to make phone calls. Not unusual for me...
Screen: almost 4 hours screen time, pretty impressive considering the phone has been running for more than 13 hours, and the battery is at 50%. On the other hand I did not make any phone calls, so this could be part of the reason for that excellent screen-on time. Btw, I'm using "Lux brightness control" instead of the LG2's pathetic brightness control feature, the Lux app itself drew practically zero power (as can be seen at the "App Sucker" screen, or actually, you can't even see it because it's too down in the list).
Phone Radio: At 7.9%, I don't really know whether it's good or bad, although this is definitely not a major battery user. I've attached the cellular reception screen too, just so people could reference with theirs. I think overall the reception is pretty good according to that image.
Wifi Active: The Wifi has been on the entire operating time. Most of the time it was connected to my home router, and some of the time it was not connected at all, but still on (when I was out of the house). I'm attaching the Wifi screen so people could see how much traffic the phone had through wifi, for reference. With only 3.9% battery usage, I think there is no need to turn the wifi off, ever.
Held Awake: The phone was awake for 1 hour (while the screen off, that is). Out of 13 hours being awake for 1 hour, I'm not sure whether this is good or bad. This will become clearer when more people will post their result here. It says that the power that was drawn during this 1 wake hour is 0.0%, I'm not sure if this is true, or some kind of inability of GSam to calculate battery usage for this awake period (if GSam IS correct, then I guess I don't understand what's the point of deep sleep, if the phone draws practically zero power even when awake...).
Bluetooth: The BT was on the entire operating time, but connected to a device only a short amount of time. In any case it drew no power according to this screen... like wifi, I think there is no need to turn the BT off, ever.
Regarding the "App Sucker" screen, I can't really say anything intelligent about this, no app seem to drain the battery too much. The 4 hours screen-on time was mainly spent browsing the internet, using Whatsapp, watching youtube, using XDA app (not even listed in the first screen) neither of which seem to drain the battery too much...
So, now that we have some reference (and a reference for a pretty good battery behavior, I think) It will be interesting to see how your results compare...
Just a quick question. I work in a building where there is terrible service. I mean so bad sometimes I get none at all. How does turning off mobile data save battery. Essentially your phone is still trying to connect to the mobile network all the same. I'm kind of looking for a technical explanation not just the 4g uses more battery type.

If you have bad cellular reception, turning off mobile data can help, but as you said it won't completely solve the problem because the phone still needs to connect to the network so you could talk and send SMS. I think switching to airplane mode (and using WIFI) is the best solution for battery life in this case. Still, I think you should use GSam to really see how much battery is drained by your bad cellular reception.
I am using it now. Waiting until it drops to around 20% to post my results. Will get back.

Here are my statistics. You think my phone just has bad reception and is in a bad area or there is something wrong with my antenna? My old Droid Razr HD was the same way, barely any service. I'm definitely not staying with Verizon. I pay out the noodle for "the best service" and I get crap. I live on Long Island outside New York City, my service should be amazing.

Ok, as promised, here are my 10% results:
Phone: did have some phone calls today, though nothing significant. I guess my usage can't really tell how significant phone calls are going to be with the G2, though this should not be a significant battery drainer for most.
Screen: As you remember, yesterday, after 13 hour phone usage, I had 50% battery, I had 3 hours 47 minutes of screen-on time. At that point I thought I might get over 7 hours screen-on time, but here I show about 5 hours 25 minutes. I guess that if I completely drained it, I would have gotten close to 6 hours, not bad.
Phone radio: seems similar to yesterday, about 10% of the battery... I still get good reception, as the image shows.
Wifi active: Wifi had been on the entire time, using 5.6% of the battery.
Held awake: So, yesterday after 13 hours of usage, the screen was held awake 1 hours. Today, after a total of 31 hours, the phone was held awake a total of 3 hours. It seems that the phone consistently is held awake for about 1 hour, every 10 hours of operation time (under my specific configuration, that is). I still find it weird that this "held awake" time did not tax the battery at all. How is this possible ?
Bluetooth: was on the entire time, not connected most of the time. Zero impact on battery.
Regarding the App Sucker screen, similar to yesterday, can't say anything special about this. This day I kept browsing the interned using Opera browser, and added another hour using Runkeeper with GPS tracking (with screen off). After a full cycle of battery usage, the main battery draw comes from the Home launcher, next is Opera browser, and then the apps become pretty much insignificant in terms of battery usage. Maybe two last points here: I'm using both Lux brightness control (to control auto brightness) and Delayed Lock (to remove the lock when connected to certain wifi points and BT devices), both of these apps always run in the background, yet consume practically zero battery, so high recommendation for both of these (they also work great with the G2). Last point, I'm using all the google location access services (everything is turned on there), and I really don't see this taxing in any way, using this GSam report.

Here are my statistics. You think my phone just has bad reception and is in a bad area or there is something wrong with my antenna? My old Droid Razr HD was the same way, barely any service. I'm definitely not staying with Verizon. I pay out the noodle for "the best service" and I get crap. I live on Long Island outside New York City, my service should be amazing.

Interesting results. I thought this thread would be revealing, and it doesn't disappoint already.
Your phone reception is pretty bad, much much worse than mine. BUT, you can see that the difference in battery draw is not really significant between my case (I have great reception) and yours, in both cases the phone radio took about 10% of the battery. It seems that the phone reception qaulity doesn't make much difference on the battery (whether it's pretty good, or pretty bad. Maybe this will change if the reception is horrific... like 0 and 1). Comparing my GSam report to yours, you will gain practically no battery advantage by making your phone reception better (at least considering your current phone usage - you barely made phone calls, but still phone reception is also important in order to keep the phone connected to the network, and also for mobile data...). This is REALLY surprising, I thought that when comparing my excellent reception to your very bad one, if I got 10% battery usage (for phone radio), you'll get something like 30%. This did not happen at all, surprisingly!.
Your Held awake time is pretty much similar to mine, as evertything else is similar to mine (wifi active, etc.), yet you seem to get significantly less screen-on time than I. I can think of one explantion: I see you are using G2's automatic brightness control, which is pretty horrible, while I use Lux brightness control, which can reduce the brightness much much more, when it's appropriate. I really can't think of any other major contributor to your battery drainage in comparison to mine...
One thing still keeps me bewildered: why doesn't the "held awake" period tax the battery ?? I mean, the phone is awake, yet no battery is being used... how could this be possible ? Is this a problem of GSam which can't read this information right ?

When you turn off mobile data the phone stops searching for a data connection, thus this battery draining process is halted

Barely read through the details but I charged my phone to 100% last night, pulled it around 6am today. Been texting and tweeting moderately. Made a few phone calls, checked voicemail. Used the flashlight a couple times and took a few pictures, flash off.

This is true but look at the sent part of data of the phone radio. My received data is much higher then yours but I can assure you I only receive data via WiFi because my phone signal is so bad. Your sent in comparison much more data then me probably via your phone signal.
This is also very important. I had my mobile data OFF while at work today. I have a shift tomorrow where I will keep the mobile data on and post new results.
Edit: Also about the phone being kept awake and not using any battery. It does seem odd. Perhaps we should also use the orginal screenshots of the stock battery app (pending you still have stock rom).

But, I don't see how the stock battery app will shed any new light on the kept awake period, if anything, the stock battery app is less detailed regarding almost everything...
having battery drain issue, cell standby and over-counted are the main reasons showing in battery stats. how can i get rid of that? after full charge it takes 4 to 5 hours to plug in the charger again.
What are you showing us here? Looks to me like a mostly idle run over about 12 hours, getting roughly 2% per hour drain. That's a little higher than I usually see, but not horrible depending on conditions, especially if the small amount of use you did have was demanding. How much screen on time are you getting out of a full battery run?
I would suggest getting the app betterbatterystats (search xda) to get a better idea of what your issue is, if you actually have one...
Thanks for the reply. I was trying to say that why stand by time consuming that much percentage? Is that normal while data and wifi disabled? And what is that over-counted thing? As you said stand by time is little higher than normal and depends on condition. What kind of condition you're talking about?

I've never run with both data and Wi-Fi turned off (I use data for notifications when idle) so that might be higher than expected idle drain. I typically see 1 - 2% per hour drain in that configuration.
In my experience, you'll need to better narrow down the cause of the drain if you want to fix it. It may be due to weak cell signal (though your screen shot shows what appears to be decent signal), or possibly an app that frequently wakes in the background looking for a network connection. If that is the case, having data and Wi-Fi off may actually hurt your battery performance.
Get the BetterBatteryStats app, it will help you narrow down the cause.
No Voice Mail Icon
Great Rom, great battery life. I found couple of bugs.
1. No Voice Mail icon.
2. Screen doesn't come on sometime if using Google Now Launcher and Google Now is ON.
3. Service provider say Bell while I am with Virgin (Actually Bell owns Virgin but something I notice)
4. Back key size( check the picture attached)

you're right, this is very good rom and its running smooth with very few bugs but sooner they will fix those bugs
