[Q] flash procedure - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all.
i read many guide about flashing a rom, rom manager, recovery, etc... but i'd like to ask something about it.
wipe cache
i noticed that the "wipe data/factory reset" option also wipes the /cache partition. can i skip "wipe cache" in this case?
if not, should i wipe cache before flash a rom? after? both? i don't know, maybe the cache is involved in the flash process...
kernel/boot animation
is it safe to flash a rom, gapps, a kernel and a boot animation at the same time or should i reboot between some of them?
dalvik cache (with rom manager)
using rom manager with "wipe dalvik cache" checked, i'm not able to see any "dalvik cache wiped" message during the process.
did i miss it? is anyone else wondering this?
thanks very much.

ok guys...
too easy? too specific?

ok, i've just tried myself.

no, no trace of any dalvik message.
so? well, i'm experiencing a bug in my rom never seen before.
i'll try this all again soon to understand if there's really something wrong with my procedure or if it is just a coincidence.
in the meantime, feel free to post your opinions!

ok, i've just figured it out.
the dalvik cache wiping relies on /cache/dowipedalvikcache.sh.
anyway this script has no echo/print_ui lines so, questionable choise, the process is transparent to the user.

It's possible to get bootloop when changing rom's, but I have successfully upgrade form CM 7.1 to 7.2 without wipe.

Using CM7 nightly (cm_p500_full-34) stuck in boot loop

Hello, I just rooted, and then tried to flash the latest nightly onto my P500H from Koodo.
Now whenever I boot, it's just stuck in the spinning arrow. At first it resets the boot but after 1 or 2 tries the arrow will just get stuck.
I can get into clockworkmod recovery, but there is error message saying: Bad boot message "recovery".
Now, first time I did this I didn't wipe cache partition, but then I did wipe it but same thing happens.
Any ideas?
Did you wipe Data?

When you change ROM or kernel, you have to wipe, at least, cache and dalvik cache.
Since I wipe data most of the times, I don't know if Gingerbread 2.3.7 can handle data from 2.3.3, so I would recommend you to try first wiping the 2 caches I mentioned then, if unsuccessful, wipe data.
BTW, this 'bad boot' message on recovery is the same to everyone. I'm no technician on the subject, but you can simply ignore it.
No I only wiped cache partition.
should I also do wipe data/factory reset?

First you try wiping only cache and dalvik cache. Then, if you're still stuck, you try wiping data.

Need help

I'm all ready to flash a custom rom on my device and came across this: How To Load Custom ROM on Your Android Device (After Using the Revolutionary Method), ( <---- type this link into google apparently im not allowed to post outside links so just type it in to google) however no where in the instructions is he wiping the cache partition or dalvik cache, I've heard from most people if you don't wipe the cache you could end up with a phone eating a bowl of boot loops, or having a paperweight, so is he wrong or is it not important, please explain?

"Wipe data/factory reset" will clear both your cache and dalvik cache. You don't have to do it separately.

Really? and thanks alot for the fast response

My question about wipe Dalvik cache, wipe cache partition, ect.

Hi everybody, I'm a vietnamese. I never used a android phone before.
I see in StreakMod recovery:
+ Wipe Dalvik cache.
+ Wipe Cache partition.
+ Fix permissions.
+ Wipe data/Factory reset (not sure)
I usually do it (in order) whenever i flash a recovery or install a rom. But i don't know:
1. Must I do that?
2. When should I do that, after or before finishing a "factory reset"?
3. After I do a "factory reset", must I do it again?
Sorry about my bad English.

Usually if you are installing a custom ROM it will tell you whether or not you need to do a wipe of the Dalvik cache. Always Factory reset before installing a new ROM unless otherwise noted. Wiping the Cache and/or a factory reset after installing a ROM can usually fix most FC issues and issues adding accounts on a Streak

do i need to wipe dalvic and cashe after flashing anything using twrp?

I'm noob. i don't understand what thats for
if what you have just flashed, the last line of code excuted is not something "cleared delvik / cache" and you SHOULD clear Delvik/cache at the very end of exiting twrp

Answered in order asked: Don't panic. Maybe, but you can always go back and wipe dalvic/cache...
No, sometimes it's even making more bad than good.
