Windows 7.5 or 8 on Photon ? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi,
Is it possible to run Windows Mobile 7.5 or 8 (Coming soon) on Photon ? I mean so many roms etc. are coming out everyday for photon and so much development is going on, so just wanted to ask out of curiosity if Windows can be run on Photon ?
Thanks.

Nope, I'm afraid not. Our hardware doesn't have drivers for WP. The only way we could produce something like that is with support from microsoft which we do not have.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I hope someday some company launches a device in which a user could change/install any OS on the fly.
Thanks.

Check the activity of the Android forums compared to this one. That should answer your question. Currently Android requires some parts of WinMo to work, but I use a very small version of WinMo, ChuckyDroid ROM.
Android development is thriving. WinMo 6.x development is dead. In many ways, Android runs better than WinMo on the HD2.
winmo? people still use that junker? this thing shoulda ran android from the start...
Absolutely, go for it. There is no way you can harm/brick your phone because android is only running off the microSD. Download a few different builds and try them out. The worst that can happen is ending back up in windows mobile. I would reccoment trying shubCraft.
Well, I guess it depends on the compatibility issues of the software you use. In my case, right now, I cannot leave WinMo as of yet because of that.

No way for me
I've had the Nexus One for the last 5 months and Android running on the Hd2 is like a car without oil in the engine: VERY ROUGH
For someone who hasn't had a Nexus One yet then yeah the Android port will be fine for you and you wont know the difference but for me I can DEF feel it and it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Lag + not everything works = I'd rather have WinMo 6.5 for the rest of the Hd2's life unless the can start making the Android versions smoother/work better.

Yes BUT not yet from reading through the amount of postyers having issues with using Android on the HD2 at present is far too much,i would wait until all the problems have been rectified and everything is 100% before i go with Android.

i've got the same doubts. well and of course, i'm originally from austria so i'm wondering if there are any language packs or something like that available for the android roms. of course, i can deal with the english roms, but if i have the posibility i'd take the german rom or whatever.

actually the worst thing you can do is kill your sd card, requiring purchase of new card.
That can get expensive after awhile.

I sold my Nexus One in order to buy an Hd2 for cheap off of craigslist knowing that I might never even run Android on it. I wanted to give Windows Mobile a chance and learn the basics before trying to port Android. Turns out it was the best decision I could have made since I actually prefer Windows Mobile more than Android!
People complaining about a phone they have already purchased need to get a life and better purchasing skills
I don't understand all this hype about Android. From what I have seen it's all over-hyped on the HD2. I went to the Android section expecting to be blown away by the amazing detail, features and screens of Android. Instead i've been underwhelmed and put off of Android. The Interface looks more like a step backwards about 10 years.
Where is the holy grail of Android for HD2 that is going to make us all want to switch to Android from WinMo?
Ok - I get it that for geeks Android might be the way forward as it's all open source and available to tinker with - but for people who just want a phone that works - WinMo 6.5x runs rings around Android. God help us when WinMo 7 arrives on the scene.
I understand that this may start a flaming session - but my mind is open to be converted - point the way.....show me the eye candy...
what making android not work 100% on htc hd2?

Windows7 OS ??

Can we expect to see a Windows 7 ROM for the hero ? or does it not work like that ?????
Seeing as though you have nearly 200 posts, you should know that this should have gone in GENERAL or QnA. Please remember this for next time.

Well you got almost 1000 posts and still you say "never"....no such thing at XDA.
I remember ppl saying that Android would "never" be ported to WM phones...guess what!
only snapdragons are supported currently, xda is amazing but they can't turn an armv6 into an armv7 with a finger snap
ya know, i get the fact that winmo has been completely redesigned etc. but .. ionno , if idd have the option to choose betwen android and winmo i would totally stick with android ^_^

the only way it could be done is via virtual machine i *BELEIVE*. Youll need a powerful ass phone though to manage it, any phone in existance couldnt run it properly via vm due to requirements of additional power for virtualisation.
come to think of it, i dont know if any phone processor suports virtualisation...
Until VM Ware for mobiles gets released? I should Google that again, haven't seen any updates in a while.

Yes well android is open source and can be modified. And even then, this was only done on a WinMo device very similar to an android one.
You can look at it by comparing Macs with PCs. Can you install windows on Macs? No! Why? Because Apple won't make hardware property drivers for Windows. The same here with Android and Winmo7. When HTC will release new phone with Winmo7 devs on xda will be able to port it to similar device with similar hardware, so drivers are more or less compatible. So I agree with ddotpatel that Hero won't have running Winmo7.
On another hand technically it is possible by using reverse engineering, but that is the hell of the work so I don't think someone can do that.
... or HTC have full stock of Hero hardware which they can't sell so to reduce costs they decide to design new model with Hero hardware running Winmo7. I personally think Hero could handle Winmo7 without problems.

winmo7 has strict hardware requirements, MS would never allow it to be run on a low end phone like Hero.

Yeah, well, both of you did not get the point. I'm not talking about new macs who come now pre-installed with windows. I was talking about old times back when macs where only available with iOS and it was kinda cold war between macs and pcs.

HTC HD2 - 5 buttons
HTC HD7 - 3 buttons
HD2 has enought buttons , obviously more than Windows Phone 7 needs
I heard it's actually because of the extra buttons.
Not entirely sure what to make of it - whether is was real or not just came across it and thought I'd share:
Windows Phone 7 Running on HTC HD2?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f_NJatLVQk
HTC support told me that there will be upgrade for the HD2.
Windows Phone 7 devices should have only a Back-Button, Windows-Start-Button and a BING-Search-Button. Additional buttons can be e.g. Volumecontrol- or Cameracontrol-Buttons. The HD2 has no Search-Button and the Call-Accept/End-Buttons and the Home-Button are not supported natively by Windows Phone 7, thats why the HD2 never gets an official upgrade to WP7.
@TriniKing_CE: This video might be true. Cotulla is trying to port WP7 to the HD2 but he says it will be more difficult than expected! So you have to wait for a stable and full working rom!

I have to disagree, I do not think that the HD2 is "let down" by WM6.5.....
It is far and away the most versatile OS as far as I can see. Ok the actual WM interface is dated but I still find the windows version of sense to be much nicer than the android equivalent. I have been using android a lot lately and find it to be so much more restrictive than WM. However it cannot be denied that it is much more suitable for the "average user" ( I tried to phrase that without coming across as a techno snob )
As far as the free upgrade to WP7 is concerned Im afraid you were misinformed... It has been officially stated that this will not happen

I completely agree with that. WM 6.5 is a great OS and I really want to have a device running it. But most manufacturers have set up there priority to Android or Windows Phone 7. I preffer to buy a HD2, because it is the most exciting phone. It can run Android and maybe later WP7 if Cotulla get it working. But it also would be nice if any manufacturer like HTC bring out new WM 6.5 devices, because WM6.5 is not outdated.
I am a user which has no prejudices against any operating system. It is only a matter of taste which you want to have and which you need for your requirements. WM is almost the only OS, which is not addicted to any big concern. While using Android, Google is omnipresent, while using an iPhone you have restrictions from Apple everywhere. And on WM you can install what you want. I also can run non Microsoft software and if you want you can run Android by using HARET. Tell me any other OS which is able to perform a dualboot or wich is able to run a second OS parallel?! I guess there is NO!

[Q] Windows 6.5 for Atrix ?

I'm quite experienced with Windows 6.5 devices - about 8 years with Windows devices, built my own ROM's etc for too many devices to count now
I've purchased an Atrix 4G for it's hardware specs but dislike the Droid O/S intensely (I won't detail why, just that this O/S does almost nothing I want to and almost everything that I don't want to). Before anyone pours shallow scorn on this, please realise that I knew beforehand that this was so. I had my eyes wide open here
So can we, through some processes, eventually finish with a Windows 6.5 O/S (NOT 7, the ARM CPU won't work) on the Atrix ? I can find a "dual boot" thread (good!) but no thread on the possibility (?) of using Windows 6.5

With Android, it never goes backwards...the only time I've seen phones change an operating system is when it's been WM to Android or iOS to Android. I don't think anyone has ever got an Android to run anything other than modifications of Android and I don't think it will ever happen. And woah you would need a massive team to rewrite WM for any Android and have anything really work...
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Thanks for your reply - for my money, it's the Droid that goes backwards, but anyway ...
If this is not to be, then I'll persist with the task of trying to engineer the Droid to do what I want it to
My long experience with Windows devices showed me that the hardware is not produced for a specific O/S, but rather the O/S is written to fit the hardware. So if we can replace the Droid bootloader, flashing a different ROM is possible
Just an FYI, when you say Droid instead of Android, it makes it seem like you're trying to troll.
Good luck on this though, I remember using WinMo 5 on my HTC 8125 nearly four years ago now and can definitely connect with WinMo appreciation to a certain point. I missed out on the WM6 and 6.5 parties, but I've only ever heard good things about (in regards to WM5).
my advice is to get a HD2 and youll have a large amount of OS's to install.

Yes, "Droid" refers to a specific line of phones. "Android" refers to the operating system.

OK, I appreciate that the nickname Droid unsettles people, so I won't use it anymore in posts here
From the answers here (much appreciated that people posted back), the short answer is that I'll have to re-engineer what I can. Not unexpected

But it runs on hardware that is fairly common to android phones. What steps would need to be taken to get to a point where we could attempt flashing a rom from a phone with similar specs?
It would be a lot easier though to just buy a $150 android phone and be done with it. ICS or jelly bean wouldn't run too well with the 256mb ram, and the 8gb (6gb) fixed storage is pretty limiting no matter what OS you are running.

try buying a linux/maemo os phone.. like n900,, n9,, can be used for dual booting,,, even htc ,, ive heard,, has a phone which can triple boot....
ROM from Nokia?
Nokia was developing Android for Lumia in secret from Elop. They were to enable installing them in 2014 when the deal with MS was ending. Does anyone have these ROMs?

Enough is Enough!!
After seeing all the weird replies and pleas,I'd actually like to answer it in a more complete manner.....
It doesn't matter the Windows phones have similar hardware like Android devices,it's mainly about the vast difference in the OS's that achieving such a feat is close to impossible........You will have to work from ground up,Starting with
1.Creating the bootloader that supports Android
2.Creating the kernel from scratch
3.Creating drivers for everything like the touch, ril etc and make sure they are compatible with your kernel
4.Finding a flashing method for the Bootloader so that you can actully flash recoveries and ROMS
5.And finally praying to God that it works
The HTC HD2 has gone through with this process, but the thing that made development easier was the popularity of the device.....before gaining it's fame as a "Multi-OS device",it sold like hotcakes(check out it's history and you'll see)....The Lumia 610 on the other hand, doesn't have that much experienced developers to back it up.....The HD2 got even luckier as the HD7 was launched, because it had nearly identical specs.....which is the reason the legendary phone also gained the gift of WP7
If you have just skipped to the end because you got bored halfway...........You don't have enough developers to back you up
