[Q] - Predefined settings values before cooking - Android

Hi all!
I searched all over the places but i cant find any answer to my question
I wanna predefine some basic settings like screen timeout, etc, before i cook my rom, just to when i flash the rom i have my settings and not have to change it mannualy.
its any build.prop vars ? cant find anything related to this
this is for a MIUI rom
and another question related to predefined settings, its the programs in launcher dock (nova launcher)
i want to predefine my programs in dock, so, again, when i flash my rom i have my predefined programs in launcher dock
i know this last one is android general and not launcher settings, because doesnt matter what laucher you use, the programs in the dock is always the same, phonebook, brownser, etc.
is there any file where the activities are stored ?
if anyone can help me or give some hints
thanks

I'm not 100% familiar with Miui. I'm guessing though that launcher settings will be in the launcher apk. Same with phone settings in settings.apk

lithid i doubt, because i already removed original launcher apk (miui) from system/app on cooking and replaced with nova, and the activities in dock keep the same..
hmm .. unless all launchers use a default activities for dock, and all devs implement the same dock configuration .. ill decompile it and take a look
did you know in smali what im searching for ? the file ?

[Q] How to have LG category function in custom roms?

Dear all,
I love the way LG stock rom devides apps in to default ones and Downloads. Moreover, it allows creating new categories to better organize apps. However, no custom rom (void, prime, lol,...) has this useful ability.
Do u know how to get this? Which app can help with the same need?
The LG Home app recognizes 2 categories by default, but additional categories may be added. And ones from the first category can be moved to the second and so on. The only thing special about the "APPLICATIONS" category in the stock launcher includes all apps from the /system/app/ directory.
With Zeam, GO, ADW, Panda, Better Home and LauncherPro (I don't know of other launchers...) it is possible to create categories and organise apps the same way as in the stock home app. But system apps are by default not seperate from the user applications in the app drawer.
If you want the stock launcher app, just copy it from your stock ROM - "/system/app/LGHome.apk". Then you are free to place it on any ROM of your choice (Simply install the package or copy it to the /system/app/ directory).

How do you do this? I've been using LP Plus for 2 weeks and I've pretty much gone through all the possible settings from the preference page and I couldn't find anything about it there.

i would like to know this too so i can create category for my downloaded apps and preinstalled apps
Many launchers come with this function. Just try them. If you have an Android phone and you haven't yet tried all the launchers, it's weird. I bet 99% people have tried all launchers.

[Q] Organising the App Drawer

On the S2, it seems when you remove an app, the app drawer doesn't re-org it just leaves a gap meaning it has to be manually sorted. Is there a way to automatically sort it other than using the list view?
I also have a similar question to this that I can't find the answer to anywhere..
Basically I have the same problem with around 9 app drawers half filled. I could sit here for an hour dragging each app icon, one at a time, to other app drawers to consolidate them into less drawers but it's very tedious and annoying to do this.
In some apps, I can select multiple icons (such as multiple pictures) and then move them all to another folder, or perform an action on all the selected icons; I can't seem to find a way to do this with my non-rooted SGS2.
I'm trying to find an app that will allow me to set categories and then assign app icons to those categories and then be able to sort all my icons based on the different categories... again, I've not had any success finding an app like that...
...so I've ended up here, on XDA Forums, to ask the people who know more than me.

you have let me think 3 options or maybe two...either download appzorter application from the market..that basically will sort all your applications in alphabetical order and also the folders you create. then if you have gaps it will sort that for you as well and fill the empty spaces.
or second option use a different launcher from the market and it sorts the icons and folders for you.
one launcher that lets you organize your apps into categories i think its either nova launcher or 360 launcher..no need to be rooted or anything like that to be able to use those apps. good luck let me know how you guys get on
Thanks, I have the EX Launcher.. but I don't like it because I have to setup the home screen gain and I had trouble finding the same widgets I had on the out-of-the-box launcher.. maybe I will try again one day.. but for now I will have a look at appzorter to solve my immediate annoyances
+1 for Appzorter
Why Samsung didn't include this function is beyond me.

Samsung does. But on Epic 4G which has an auto organized TW4 launcher. I only fine one custo which ported it to our model. But i am not able to make it run on another rom. So bad...

[Q] Alpha 2 ics problems

Im really liking the rom but i have a couple of problems:
1)The messaging app notifications dont work for some reason. I do not get a little icon on the messaging icon, or a notification in the status bar, nor do i get a vibration or ringtone. I have made sure the notification is checked in settings.
2)Not really a problem but im assuming this rom doesnt support bln..?
3)I know this has been asked many times but screen size for launchers. Im using apex launchers and currently i cannot put any widgets. I have heard different replys and dont know what i should do. I havent messed with my dpi. Should i change dpi, or what should i change grid size to?
4)S-pen optimized apps are not compatible? I dont understand why apps specifically made to be used with the s pen would not be compatible with the note. For example in samsung apps i look at the spen apps and they dont work. Click on omni sketch or zen brush and it says incompatible?
Thanks!
Apex
I use Chomp SMS but i was getting notifications up top of messages through the default messaging app with no problem, just not badges, which I have grown to dislike coming from iOS.
Apex works just fine for me, how are you adding widgets? through a long press on on the desktop of through widgets in the app drawer? Widgets from the app drawer require APEX to be a system/app not a data/app. I also have Apex set to 7x7 and worked previously on 5x6 as well.
As for S-Pen apps I would imagine its because they haven't been released with ICS Support since this is an ahead of schedule leak, I'm not entirely sure.
i don't think bln has support on this rom yet but I'm not entirely sure.
I got my notification working now. And yeah I'm trying to add widgets through the app drawer. What do you mean apex launcher has to be a system app? How would I go about doing that? Also what grid size do you recommend? Ah I guess I can understand why the spend apps do not work well hopefully somebody can fix it soon. Yeah I'm pretty sure you need a kernel for bln which I don't think we'll get until the actual ics release.

Apexlauncher.apk has to be moved with root explorer or es file explorer in a rw state, the apk has to be moved to the system/app folder and reboot. Im using 7 tall x 6 wide grid and really liking it, and yes unless da_g uses the kernel in the leak to rework a custom kernel and add bln, we'll have to wait til the official kernel and ics is out and Im sure he'll use that to make us an overclocking kernel with bln support.

Go into the settings menu in play store app. There is an option to automatically add what you download to your home screen, just un-tick it.

[Q] How do I remove the google bar from my home screen?

First, I'm not a developer (any more), just a novice user of a Nexus 10.
I've been playing with various widgets, putting them on the home screen & building groups of apps to keep the screen simple,
so I can actually see my wallpaper. (Nothing special, just pics I like.)
Problem is that huge Google bar at the top. Is there an simple way to get rid of it, like the select-drag-drop for other home screen stuff.?
Also, there seems to be some limits on where I can actually put apps or widgets. Is there a way to adjust this too?
I'd really like to put a dashboard widget in place of that Google bar.
Finally, is there a way to disable Google when I select or swipe nearby the bottom of the screen?
This is a real pain-in-the-patootie when playing solitaire & the cards get near the bottom of the screen.
Thanks in advance. I could not find this anywhere in the Q&A forum for Android.
Try a different launcher, like nova, which will allow you to disable the persistent search bar.
Ok, what' a "launcher"?

Sounds helpful, if I knew what a launcher is.
I am soooooo out of date re: computers of any kind anymore...
Just go on google play and search "launcher"! It is the app which launches other apps, provides the app drawer, and many other setting options, like how pages scroll, etc.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I'll go see whats I can find, & come back here to make sure its a good one.
Root file manager under system then apps. Look for Google search bar and add .back at end then restart phone

Sounds good, a real engineering solution instead of a workaround (not that there is anything wrong with a workaround).
How to I get to the root file system to modify filenames?
I'm on a Nexus 10. Any idea what app/widget/setting function to use?
I've got "androzip" which let's me see the file system down to a certain point ( /.) & shows a bunch of folders,
but crashes when I try to see what's in the folder named "root"
Suggested launcher?

Which one is best/most reliable/free-or-cheap?
If I muck this thing up, Duh Hubby will get really upset!
I know there is/was a list of recommended apps & widgets, but can't find the thread now. Don't know if it mentioned a launcher anyway.
Thanks again!

I just now realized that you suggest a launcher here... Doh!
The other suggestion about changing s filename may be good too. I suspect a launcher will be safer for me.
Yes, using a launcher is better. Otherwise you'd have to unlock the bootloader of Nexus 10, which will wipe all your data, then set it up all over again and restore backed up data, then get into the root filesystem and modify the file name of the app file, which can be too much since you say you're not experienced (unless you're interested in learning to do all that) The app is called QuickSearchBox.apk btw not GoogleSearchBox.apk.
Also, custom launchers like Nova and Apex launcher look exactly the same as the default launcher you're using right now, but have a boatload of additional features a lot of which you may find interesting and useful. The default (stock) launcher is very basic in functionality.

Much nicer than Android basic, more "toys" to play with & no Google bar at the top!
I even learned what a home screen actually is & have set up several for different uses.
Another fun time waster to play with beyond just games... would be nice to set
different wallpaper for each screen, but being able to actually see the whole
image is really nice.
I think I'll get the Pro version to get rid of other Google launch with the sweep/touch near
the bottom of screen- the answer to the second part of my original question.
Thanks to all who replied... I feel like such a noon at this point. These forums are truly the best place
to find/get answers to basics questions. The Help provided by Google is distinctly lacking in detail.
Now to search for answers to more questions....
damn. the stock launcher is actually pretty nice on the hydro edge at least for my pop but I want that damned google bar gone (BUT WANT google search and google now) I just want the stupid useless homescreen bar gone (its too small for him to use he can't hit the mic icon reliably) so I just put a regular voice search icon on the screen for him.
Grrr I hate when they "shove" things down your throat like that.

Agree with you
Is there any way to go into system and delete it all together?
You can't delete system apps unless you are rooted, which if you have a nexus device than this is super easy
Yes as mentioned before the simple fix is just use another launcher, there are many amazing ones to pick from often with a free version that works great
As for removing the bar from the stock launcher the easiest way would be to decompile the .apk and find the xml file for it and chances are change a simple bit of code from true to false but without ever decompiling this myself can't say how its set up. But in truth this may be more work than it is worth

[Q] 5x6 App Drawer SCH-I545 4.4.2 Rooted

Hi guys this might be a noob question but I am running kitkat on my Galaxy s4 with root access and safestrap. I am trying to get a 5 x 6 app drawer without having to use a different launcher because I like the touchwiz launcher. From the research that I have done Seclauncher3.apk is located under system\priv-app and not under system\apps but all the mods out there point to apps directory. The ones that do point to the right location touchwiz stops responding and so do all the apps. Does any one have any ideas on how to go about this?

Hi hdirani,
I would change your launcher if you would like to do that because most likely if you mess with the touchwiz launcher it can get severely damaged in a matter of seconds. I reccomend Nova Launcher if you would like to have that kind of app drawer though. Messing with TouchWiz can always be damaging to your device and is a unnecessary waste of time to go through its files.
Thank you for the quick response. Is there any way to get scalender and the accuweather widget to work with the nova launcher.

There is a normal widgets menu in the launcher, so you can add those in just like you would in TouchWiz.
