So... It looks as though Hero development may end with Gingerbread (2.3). Honeycomb (3.0) looks very tablet orientated and some devs are already stating it may be hard to port it.
My question is, after the resilient little Hero, what would be the next best handset to move to? A lot of people have mentioned the Desire HD or the Desire Z, but I'd like to hear from you guys, what do you think?
Update: I prefer a HTC handset myself, but which would be a good one to move to for the next set of decent ROMs??
I also believe, that after getting fully operational 2.3 with 2.6.35 kernel it will be pretty much it
Contracts are ending (I have one more year to go), developers are moving to other projects.
I hope that we will have one day "[GPL][2.3][2.6.35]Final Rom for hero".
After hero? Well, perhaps some crazy samsung device (although their quality isn't as good as HTC). I'm sure I'll stick with android, one of the best choices ever made
cheers!
I'll keep my Hero until a Tegra 2 device is realeased
I'm going to hang on to my hero for as long as possible... But I'm starting to think the Nexus S might be the next decent handset to move to, no-ones started developing ROMs yet though... Although I did notice Cyanogen had created a thread in his forum for it
I think 2.3 is maximum for Hero. Honeycomb is likely their requirements opportunities Hero.

I take that back!!! Nexus S is a Samsung handset, and got a fairly "meh" review on The Register.
It's a personal issue; I just don't like Samsung phones!!

I have to admit, this looks like the root (sorry!) I'm most likely to take.
The Nexus S seems to be a decent choice
But after putting froyo on my hero for the first time and seeing how fast it became, I think I can wait for the next reference phone
Hopefully, the next one will have a full RGB AMOLED instead of the Pentile PoS on the current Nexus S
On my next phone I'm looking for:
Tegra 2 or similar, perhaps dual core hummingbird with dedicated gpu
300+ dpi RGB AMOLED screen
Proper capacitative multitouch
Hard buttons
NO FINGERPRINT MAGNET, minimal gloss&plastic, good materials
In any case, would Honeycomb be for tablets? I assumed that honeycomb won't come to phones

yep, same hear, dual core is the way forward.
I plan to run the hero, cancel my TMO contract and get a giffgaff PAYG sim until a decent Tegra2 (preferrably HTC!) comes to the market.
not sure if i'd go back on contract or stick with giffgaff...i'll see how they perform, then buy the handset sim free (ouch?!?)

personally, i think there will be a version of Honeycomb for phones, when the dual core handsets become more readily available. maybe a 'cut down' version.
i have Hero for like 8 months now. Pretty good phone, but still a little bit slow, only compared to other smartphones (but as a phone, it is great).
But yesterday i bought SGS.
for my girlfriend. i hate world
Sorry, what's an SGS?

it depends on your needs i think. if you're flashjunky like me our hero will end soon i think because the processors won't be enough soon.
and also be careful about screen, only desire (not z nor hd) has amoled screen. so for better screen sharpness, you may get desire for now. and also it gets great scores

It's looking like a HTC Desire at the moment. I was told to avoid the Desire and go for a Desire HD or Desire Z. Not sure why though, the Desire is the only one of the three with an AMOLED display...
I've had the Hero for just over a year now, and honestly, jailbreaking it has given it a new lease of life. That said though, it's definitely not gonna get 3.0 by the looks of things, and I'd rather not get left behind in terms of software updates. I will likely get an HTC or a Samsung; both companies make good hardware that's pretty powerful. I have considered buying a Nexus S outright, but it's kinda beyond my budget right now...

Completely agree with you. I bought a Hero when my iPhone went t*ts up.
But my concern was that the newer versions of Android are going to require faster hardware and there will come a point where the Hero just won't be able to cut it anymore. So what's the next best handset to go up to? At the moment a HTC Desire
Well, it's looking like either Nexus S, or Desire for me =P
Hy guys
1.What's the next phone that you want to buy?
2.Thinking about a nokia with WP7 or an iPhone ???
Please motivate your posts...i just want to see what you guys think around here
Haha, you made a new thread, I saw your post in that other thread
On-topic: 1:What I know is that next spring/ summer I will probably buy *something*. Either a tab or a phone, it depends on how cheap the tabs have gotten. It will either have dual-core or quad-core, we'll see if phones really need more in the future, it all depends on the software development. I don't know if HTC or Samsung and I don't even know if I'm buying Android. It will of course be something Linux, but there are some other nice projects like WebOS and MeeGo as well out there I'm not that found of HTC Sense and I prefer Go Launcher, but as I'm very fond of my HTC phone and Samsung is a bit plastic... Last, if I buy a phone, I want it to have a 3.7 or 4 inch screen. I think 4.3 is too big, but I still want that awesome hardware of the 4.3 phones
2: iPhone: NO WAY!!! Many iPhone guys say that Android is for those who cannot afford iPhone, I say iPhone is for those who are too stupid for Android
Nokia: ... Probably not, as they're going for Windows which is not as open as these other awesome OS
thanks for the post...as i wrote, i just want to see how hero users will go with the next generation of phones or tablets...seems that i'm not the only one that thinks about a tablet instead a phone...
Well i have to wait 2 years to renew my contract xD but i think i will buy one that let me modifie as my vibrant does, you know flashing, themed it

Although I absolutely love my hero, I feel, that in the not too distant future (in a months time), I will be getting a new handset, It will be a Android handset, as I love the way it can be customised etc lol, well, I would like to get a SGS2/Sensation, but thats out of my price range....So it will probably be a Desire or a Sony Ericsson handset, Possibly a motorola defy

Haha, its pretty big xD I still gotta wait for 2 more years for my contract to finish
I still have my Hero
Moved on to HTC HD7 - windows phone loved it but NODO didnt help me much
Updated to MANGO recently and really love what Mircosoft is doing so will definately be going for a NOKIA WP7 next Year
Currently enjoying my SAMSUNG GALAXY S2 - Android Phone and love they way I can flash all the latest firmwares without the need to root
So for you I would suggest Either wait for Nokia to come out with windows phone (SEARAY is their first phone to come out )
or
Wait of NEXUS PRIME / MIUI PHONE / or IPHONE 5 which ever takes your fancy
I'm going for the HTC HD2.
Advantage? I can have whatever I want. WP7, Android, WM (even Ubuntu).
It still has good hardware for the time being, and I simply love the design.

Well, now that it's for the most part over, what were your thoughts on Nokia World.
I for one am not a fan of the Nokia 710 Sabre, the hardware is clearly high quality. However, the overall look and feel of the device looks too... HTC-ish. The 800/Searay on the other hand was simply astounding. I have no problem admitting that I was disappointed in the lack of a FFC, something that is rumored to be heading to the U.S. release but that still halts me from importing one. The rest of the device however, is awesome. The unibody is amazing, there's not a seam on the device. Even the glass seems to meld right in to the unibody. It's almost a work of art.
Another bit I was interested in was
The Nokia Kinetic flex display, bend your device one way to zoom in and the other to zoom out, there are numerous other applications for this but quite frankly, I just can't wait.
So, what do you think of Nokia's new offerings. They also released the Asha series running Series 40 which is an OS between smartphones and dumbphones to aid developing countries in accessing the internet.
Overall, it went well. I expected more things to occur that I didn't know in advance but I'm certainly not disappointed.
A little bit disappointed was hoping to hear about the ace, and no US release date.
The 800 is the one that looks like an ipod touch nano isn't it?
Well, the flexible phone could be excellent for hotheads. Girlfriend pisses them off, they can throw their phone as hard as they want against a wall and it will bounce right back to them.

Get with the times. WP7 is better than all of them now. Android can't even compare to how nice WP7 is. Not even iOS, which bests Android for quality and reliability, can't even compare to WP7.

that bending screen and phone is a huge step towards new gen phones and wp is a soild OS , just needs time
Screw Nokia. I just found out the N9/800 isn't aluminum like I had believed. That was the only remaining thing in Nokia's favor and now that's gone. I won't even look in Nokia's direction now.
But me saying this should make Nokia more favorable to people who have hated them.
Hey just got HTC Radar..
Really a great phone, simply love WP7 and the hardware...
but was really supriced to se nothing going on in the HTC Radar forum ??
why is that ?
I will be on board when it is released on Wednesday in USA!
Unfortunately because it is new and cannot be interop-unlocked there is not much development ergo activity in this forum. Most peeps dwell on the WP7 General forum.
Hopefully after the US release we will see some more activity.
Hey I had a quick question. Is there a big air-gap between the screen and the glass?
Also does it have an S-LCD or just a regular LCD.
Thanks I want this phone but dont want too much compromise.

Says S-LCD.
I've had the phone for a couple of weeks already (I'm in Belgium) and I'm coming from the Nexus One (Android).
Must say I'm really impressed, great build quality and WP7 is great, really not much to complain about except things that are to be expected with a system that is still growing like WP7.
And yes, I'm hoping there will be a little more activity development wise when the phone is released in the US, right now there's not much going on for this phone...
I checked the phone out in a store the other day and all I can say is the screen is one of the biggest pluses on this device! It is gorgeous - you will not be disappointed.
I actually prefer the S-LCD that HTC is using to the Super Amoled screens from Samsung or just about any other display (save for the IPS displays Apples uses).
The other thing that stikes me when I hold this phone is how solid and sturdy it feels, but also how light and thin it is. It's really nice!
I do not see any air-gap really. Screen is S-LCD and its quite a masterpiece, sad that it still cannot be produced for bigger screens. Thou be aware, that it is not Super-AMOLED. That means the S-LCD blacks are still not exatly black tho close enough.

im on my 5 day with HTC Radar, and i simply belive that RADAR is one of the BEST phones HTC has produced for a LOOONG time...
The quality is simply amasing and with a good speaker and really good sound when you talk in it...
And it's with WP7 I can not tell how much i love WP7. im coming from ANDROID and IOS ( SGS2, Sensation and iPhone 4) yes the spec on RADAR is not as amasing but I love it and think its better...

Because WP comes with so much security around the bootloaders and NAND that we are not even able to interop unlock the phones like Titan, so dreaming about Android is not even on the table yet.
Thus anyone not content with wp 7.5, can either wait 5-6 months for WP8 or sale their Titan right now, while you can sell it at good price and grab a HTC Sensation XL. It's exactly as it says in my signature too.
By the time we might get around modding the Titan in a few months time, WP8 will come with even further securities and features. I for one, would rather enjoy the WP8 features than not-upgrade because there might be a possibility of running Android.
HTC Sensation XL is EXACTLY the same phone, different software. I own a Sensation XL, it is sitting in a drawer since after week 2 of purchase. Hence I know its ditto same, only running Gingerbread (ICS was promised to me by the sales guy in November. He said I should have it around Christmas). There aren't any custom ICS (stable and safe) ROMs for that phone either and it's been 6 months.

XDA Marketplace - Trade in your device and swap or Sell one. If you got your HTC Titan free from your operator, you will obviously be better off trading it for Sensation XL.

No, it is not.
The site you're linking to is talking about the original HTC Titan which was the code name for a CDMA Windows Mobile 6.x device on Sprint and Verizon is the US.
Don't confuse code names with retail product names.
It is possible. You just need get all the drivers and know how to pack an Android ROM based on an old hardware like Nexus One. Sensation XL ROM won't help because the internal chipsets are totally different (they are newer dual-core variant). Titan contains similar hardware capability like Nexus One. So a modern Android OS like Gingerbread or ICS will run like crap on it (I knew this because my Galaxy S2 running 1.2G Dual core with 1GB RAM can't even run as smooth as the Titan runing WP7). Hence no one in their right mind will waste their time to create a Titan Android ROM unless you want to do it yourself.
It is possible but not probable. If you want Android experience, buy an Android phone.

Guess I'm just getting tired of the Android crowd continually asking this about every single device in existence. OK! Android can be installed on a variety of devices! We get it already!

GPS has nothing to do with mobile OS. It's an app. Try a different GPS app on your WP7.
On the other hand, my super dupper Dual-core Samsung Galaxy S2 with 1 GB RAM can never match any of my WP7 phones with signal core and 512MB RAM for the smoothness of UI.
Google's free services (including Nav) are the only good things about Android. The rest of OS is just junk.

Thanks for the laugh guys! I've been around since well Windows Mobile 6.0. I had/have a Sensation and a Skyrocket (Galaxy SII). I've been over to the dark side for god 2 years now! Just got a free Titan II and decided I would leave my sim card in it for a couple months since it's got the LTE radio. So far I'm liking it. Really liking it.
Now to just break MS security unlock the boot loader and Nand write some custom loader oh wait I KNOW I'll port over clockwork mod. Then I will round up all the drivers modify them if needed and compile a android build. Might as well start with ICS since it's the newest. So in a year or two I should be done and have android running on this mofo at least half as well as it ran on my HD2 )~
