Hi guys and girls,
I lost track of what ROM version my Nandroids are containing. I use to add the ROM version to the original file name but I couldn't do it lately.
Is there an easy way to check which ROM version a Nandroid contains?
I am posting this in the general Android forum because my question surely isn't device-specific.
I own a Motorola Defy+ and I'm running CM 7.2 at the moment but tried JellyBean lately.
Thanks!
eTaurus
Make a text file list and keep it in your /clockworkmod/backup folder. Just copy and paste the new backup folder name/date in to the text file and write a small description.
Mine's called Appendix.txt and has everything from GB to CM10. I keep a copy on my sdcard and comp - only thing is you can't read that list in cwm recovery, so you have to have an idea of what's what before you go to restore.

Thank you for answering.
Your solution is as good as mine as I rename the backup folder by adding the ROM and the release date to its name. But I did some Nandroids lately without having time to rename the folder and now I don't recall what version the Nandroid contains.
I came to a "solution" by using the app "Nandroid browser". With it I can look into the files the Nandroid contains. There is an app called "HwaSettings.apk" so it has to be JellyBean because CM 7.2 doesn't have hardware acceleration.
Cheers,

With all these new ROM's available and android being open source, can I copy framwork-res.apk's from difference ROM's and copy them to a different ROM that I have currently running with a file explorer? Will my ROM recongnize the file after a reboot and display the new framework?

This is touchy. My answer would be yes, ONLY if both ROMs are based on the same firmware version. If you start, mixing framework/firmware versions, it may get dicey (i.e. using JK6 framework on a JL5 ROM), but it would all depend. Some firmware versions have identical framework, and some have absolutely conflicting framework.
definitely do some research before doing this.
Your best bet is to find a theme that matches your current rom, and flash it. Like topshelf said, you start mixing frameworks and you're asking for trouble. As long as you do a nandroid backup and are able to access recovery mode to restore, kang away.

I am not sure if this is already known or has been discussed before. Search did not yield any relevant results. Please post your feedback.
Introduction
In most custom ICS ROM's, you might have noticed some apps like the Polaris office, Photo editor, IM or even Swype missing. These are not even there in many of the "Stock unmodified" versions released either. Surprisingly, they are very well present if you flash the original ROM through Odin. So where do these apps go? They are actually installed on first boot only if you flash from Odin.
Usual missing apps
KiesAir
OceanWeather and WindyWeather live wallpapers
Polaris Office
Photo Editor
Samsung IM
Swype
Vlingo
For those who do not want to go through this procedure and straight away want the CWM package of these missing files, you can download it from here...
How to extract them?
I am assuming the most common method ROM cooks use maybe using dsixda's kitchen (thanks to his fantastic scripts!).
When extracting and de-odexing the ROM, you may have noticed a file called hidden.img in the original ROM file which is usually ignored in this process. this file contains the above apps and they are installed to the /data/app folder. The hidden.img file is not readable using regular softwares, just like factoryfs.img.
Extract this hidden.img file from the original ROM image and paste it in the original_update folder of dsixda's kitchen (xxx.tar.md5 can be renamed to xxx.tar and opened in softwares like winrar)
Rename the hidden.img file to factoryfs.img.
Close any existing kitchen tasks and restart the kitchen.
Select option 1 to set working folder.
Make a backup of your existing working directory.
When prompted, choose the factoryfs.img option to proceed with (option 3).
You will get a message saying the file is being converted to a format for extraction.
The ext2fs program should automatically be launched.
Select open file in the program and choose the ext_factoryfs.img file (which is actually the converted from of the renamed hidden.img file).
Right click on the left pane where the opened file is listed and select Save.
Save it to the root folder of your working directory.
Now you will have a folder called data in your working directory with the missing apps. Include extraction of this folder in your updater script and you are done
If the tutorial wasn't clear, feel free to post questions on the thread.
Hope this was helpful, Cheers...

Photo editor works fine for me. Did you try clearing your cache?
Also, Samsung still uses the old GingerBread gallery.
Couldn't someone just extract the apps then post them here.

You can get them in a zipped file from here
Unzip and use the app you want.

That is definitely a way to do it.
But since these apps get installed to /data/app when installed via odin. Hence, to replicate that (not needed), i mentioned unzipping and installing as a regular apk.
Another option is to open the zip as you said and place these in a /data/app folder and flash it.
But primarily, this thread was created because i have found people asking on many rom threads about missing these apps, without getting a reply...

Its just the missing stock apps i put in system /apps i do not add apps to data s that is hit and miss unless the script is edited .
I also remove stuff i dont want from custom roms and add my own wallpaper ringtones boot CSC etc by the same method .

Very nice and simple guide.Thank you :good:
since it s not mentioned, I advice to add the libs missing for polaris office and swype etc..
U can retrieve them opening the apks and check out the lib folder.
These have to be pasted into /system/lib to avoid FCs.
It s an important step, mention it into OP.
i'm trying to get stock swype for a galaxy ace s5830 installed on my custom rom. So far without succes. I have pasted swype.apk (extracted from stock rom!) into /system/app and libswypecore.so into /system/lib. Both with permissions: 6-4-4.
When I try to use swype I get an error that this swype version was intended to use on a different device. result: I can swype but nothing happens (no words are entered, though the different dictionairies are present in the swype.apk).
I'm wondering what I should do now. (besides checking the build.prop file for differences).

sorry. I thought as it are both samsung devices, It would be the same for Ace, but I will ask in Ace forum.
I bought my Note a week ago and swore I wouldn't flash any roms until the stock ICS version came out (was told it was supposed to come out in 3 weeks). Still couldn't resist rooting it and freezing the bloatware, but now I'm itching to try some of the ICS roms that have been released lately. I just can't resist.
I come from the Captivate and remember that a good time after I started flashing roms it was announced that backing up the nv_data.bin file in the EFS folder was something we should have all done before flashing.
Is it the same thing with this phone? I don't see a nv_data.bin file but it's entirely possible that there may be something similar that I'm not spotting.
Thanks.
No input? Though the files in the /efs folder don't look like they hold any information that can't be lost I've archived it anyway.
Does anyone know if there's any other information I should save that would be unrecoverable after I flash a different rom?
I used Efs Pro.
Get some SDK tools correct for your system here. http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html Also some .net frame work 4.0 from possibly here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Programming/Other-Programming-Files/Microsoft-NET-Framework-Client-Profile.shtml Finally the business end of it, Efs pro from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546 Thanks to lyriquidperfection. At least this is what i have done. Hope all goes well.

Had the same initial thought and also archived the EFS folder. Screenshots of my APN settings (always, saves headaches) and various other settings. Upon looking around the forum, surprisingly found little mention or info in regards. So the best i could come up with, i tried, worked. Backed up as a .img and as a .tar . Overkill perhaps, but felt safer in doing so. Then posted above. (Sorry for the crude/improper use of links?)
1. I read something about loosing your IMEI after rooting / installing a rom. Is there a way to avoid this or restore it after?
2. I was wondering if there was any estimate as to when voodoo will be available for the i9300(searched the forum for voodoo really quick with no luck)
I apologize if I'm asking stupid questions, I'm just trying to learn everything I can and be 100% prepared for when I get my device.
For imei, first thing I always do since the S1 is first root the phone and in root explorer or similar I make if copy of my 'efs' folder. I make copies on the SD cards then transfer to PC just in case.
With the S3 it also has another folder - 'factory' but it contains the exact same files as the 'efs' folder. I also copy that just in case.
I always test by deleting the original folders to corrupt my imei then I copy the backup folders and imei comes back. I know there are other ways but I prefer this method. Copy and paste.
As for sound, there is a thread on it but personally not sure when it will be ready. Don't follow it much because my sound is already awesome using siyah kernal audio tweaks.

Thank you. The only other question I have is if there are any stable Jelly Bean roms with all features working yet?
When i flash a 4.2 rom, my entire sdcard is nested in a /0 folder in my new sdcard location. From what i understand this has to do with the new users feature. Its pretty confusing and if i don't take the time to move my entire sdcard back from /0 (takes some time) i end up with nested folders like /sdcard/0/0/0 and everything is hard to find. Is there any way to avoid this other than manually moving my whole sdcard every time a flash a new ROM? I know im not the only flashaholic here lol

You need to update your recovery... the newer version of TWRP & CWM don't create nested user folders!

Well, i use the CWM touch 6.0.2.7-i9300 (latest version on cwm site) and the issue stay. All roms bases on the latest cyanogenmod (4.2) have this issue too, or because in that is common have a modified recovery, or because a issue with recovery + new kernels (seems to be related with multi user, i never try this feature and probaly never use, my phone is just for me).
Being a work really hard test new roms, especially with software that seek its parameters to specific folders without option to search / select the folders.
a good update would implement a feature to let the user choose a folder where the files are, like nandroid backups, seems to be possible in TWRP, but not in CWM.
This is one, but still have to move the all other files to see them properly in all apps (yes, i know, titanium lets to choose where the backup files are) but with only 16GB (most common models) the storage is quickly filled with duplicated files/folders and cause confusion to the user where to look or put your files.
realy hard ...
