General Lithium Ion Battery Information
^^This link includes stuff about charging, including trickle charging aka SBC (Why NOT to use it, or at your own peril)
My tips for good battery life:
Tips for Non-Rooted users
1. Turn off all radios when not in use.
(gps, Bluetooth, wifi, data, 4g) Use a widget like the default HTC power widget, Switchpro, or a similar app from the market. The 3D's updated Sense 3.0 allows users to access these radios and other settings from the notification pulldown menu, , under the "Quick Settings" tab. The radios of the phone draw power if on even if the user isn't actually utilizing the radio's functions. A radio searching for signal (if you are in a low-signal area) drains more than a radio with good signal, so again, turn 'em off when you aren't using 'em.
To manually turn off radios without a toggle, go to menu>settings>wireless & networks.
Wifi uses less battery than 3G, so use wifi when you can.
2. Juice Defender is one of my favorite apps. Basically it controls your data for you to maximize life.
More explanations are on their page, search it on the market for free, or upgrade for more features.
Here are my settings for it: Click me
Note that for me at least, juice defender likes to deny apps data privileges whether you allow them or not, so screen on = data on works best for me.
3. I love live wallpapers, and I’ve always been a fan of pixel zombies, but they are really only good for showing off due to their battery drain.
4. Go to menu<settings<wireless & networks<mobile networks<disable always on mobile data.
Product F(RED) said:
To clarify, "Always On Mobile Data", when turned off, lets the 3G modem go to sleep after the screen has been off for 5 minutes. It doesn't interfere with anything like email or any other application that requires an internet connection at that moment because it turns on on-demand rather than being on all the time and wasting battery.

5. Set your screen timeout to something that fits you.
This will prevent your phone from staying on when you don’t manually turn off the screen. Also with this, manually turn off your screen when you’re done with your phone.
Menu>Settings>Display>Screen Timeout
I use 30 seconds.
6. Task killers used to be the shiz, but no longer.
Here is the ultimate, in depth, graphically assisted, explanation by the famous Fresh ROM's chef, Flipz. Shortly, in light of recent testing, really don’t do anything but force apps that the android OS needed to be open, and thus didn’t close, to re-open. So try not using them, unless for stuff like trying to figure out why your phone isn’t sleeping with system panel. You really won’t notice a performance difference, and the adverse effects you aren’t seeing will stop
+=+ A good alternative is the application SystemPanel Pro. It has a free version, but I highly reccomend purchasing the paid app. It basically monitors everything going on with your phone's usage both in real time an in terms of usage history. If your battery is draiging fast, it tells you what app was doing it, how much it was doing it, and allows you to stop it.
7. I'm sure you have all heard around that your phone isn't "sleeping".
This is referring to the phone's "awake" time, hence the name. When you go to Menu>Settings>About Phone>Battery, you can compare the two numbers, "up time" vs. "awake time." Generally, up time refers to the amount of time since the last reboot. The "awake time" is how long the screen has been active. The problem is, a lot of the time, due to the endless possibilities of inconsistencies between apps/ROMs/kernels/phones, the phone will not go to "sleep", drawing power proportionate to the screen being in use when it reality the phone is sitting idle.
If you compare these numbers, and they are the same, or if you note the difference, turn off the screen for a minute, then re-check and they are the same, then your phone is not sleeping.
One solution is to reboot.
Usually, SystemPanel will show an app that has gone "rouge" and is keeping your phone awake.
-This is done by hitting menu>settings>monitoring enabled. Then after some time has passed, ht menu>monitoring>history>change tab to top apps, and see if anything is above, say, 2-4%.
Uninstall applications/reinstalling them slowly, checking after every install to see what is causing it is one tedious but surefire solution.
Lastly,
Follow these steps that I have discovered almost always work.
1. Reboot phone.
2. Instantly upon reboot, as soon as you gain control, open up some type of monitor/taskkiller
3. "kill all" tasks on startup; about 5 times in quick succession should do the trick.
4. Turn off the screen and leave it for about five minutes.
5. Check the up time v. awake time and see if they are the same.
6. If they are, repeat steps 1-5. If they are different, you are good.
8. Our good friend sn0b0ard noticed that the 3D's battery contacts *could* be problematic.
Here's a link to his thread, but basically he explains how the leads to the battery can be kind of loose, which potentially can cause random reboots (if the contacts separate) and/or slow charging. The fix is simple: slide some paper or a piece of a rubber band between the battery and the wall opposite the leads. Toss him a thanks if it helps you out
9. Apps and Combinations to watch out for!
-Facebook for HTC Sense- Tries to sync live feed all the time, HIGHLY recommend unchecking this box, as it creates a massive draw on data
-Skype- This app reportedly (I've seen it myself) likes to sync random data and open up the network for fun. Sign out of app when not in use to fix
Root Tips LIVE
Tips for Rooted users:
1. Try out custom kernels.
By going to the EVO 3D Android Development section of the forums, you can see all of the different kernels being developed. These allow for all kinds of modifications like underclocking the CPU and undervolting, both of which save battery. To see how to use them, read the FAQ's in each thread's OPs.
Here is a great guide to custom kernel's by mroneeyedboh.
2. Use SetCPU in compliance with whatever your custom kernel allows.
This site will explain the basics of SetCPU: http://www.setcpu.com/
-Profiles from SetCPU should usually involve these for battery life optimization:
-Screen off at the minimum clock speed for both, with the max raised on level if sluggishness is apparent
-A temperature greater than “X”
-General power related profiles that lower cpu speed at lower battery levels
-Here are my SetCPU profiles: 1 , 2 , 3
-My profiles change a lot as time goes by, because different kernel creators recommend different settings. I suggest reading up on whatever kernel you are using to gather settings.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES:
*Some apps or processes begin to run at startup and keep the phone awake. These apps are not detected by things like spare parts or system panel, unless sometimes represented in the "system" process, in which case its usage will be unusually high.
This shouldn't take more than three repeats, and if it does, you need to factory reset, and slowly add apps back to see what's causing the problem.
___--- When it comes to actually "calibrating" one's battery, there are a couple of methods floating around. The method I first learned is to charge the phone all the way, boot into recovery immediately, and "wipe battery stats". Then reboot quickly, and run your phone all the way to death without charging it, then charge it all the way without interrupting it, and you should be good to go. Do this when changing ROMs/kernels for best results.
----When it comes to people claiming 20 plus hours of moderate/heavy use out of their current setup or other ridiculous absurdities, consider my position: No matter what you do, the Evo battery is the Evo battery. You can tweak it and customize it with kernels, ROMs, and settings, but none of that will turn it into a car battery. The main problem (besides a false sense of pride) that leads to these reports is the misunderstanding of what the usage levels are, so here’s my best summary:
* *Light usage – Phone screen actually on for maybe 0-2 hours. Things like a few texts, some emails, 20 minutes web browsing, etc.
* *Moderate usage – You watched a few youtube videos or similar apps, sustained web browsing, hundreds of texts, some games. Hours range from about 2-5 of screen on
* *Heavy usage – LOTS of video watching and games, 3D pics or video, or some high def gaming/movie watching for at least an hour to an hour and a half in total, with lots of emails and texts, browsing, and other app shenanigans. 5+ hours
*I’m sure everyone doesn’t agree with all these numbers, but this is most likely a good average of what powerusers think. All specific hourage may vary due to differences in phones, batteries, ROMs, and kernels… Which also means that most battery comparisons are pointless; it’s only what you can improve on that counts!
I’ll update this whenever I see good stuff, people remind me, or I remember/come across things I do.
Hope it helps everybody!

How are you charging it? USB to computer charging leads to high wake times. Any rouge apps?
Getting hot is normal this early on.
No I'm charging with the HTC charger. Let me try updating the phone maybe that will fix it.

You need to update, I know everyone is scared about not getting root, but without the update you will have battery issues. Keep fighting on HTC facebook page, we will get the unlock soon enough
So basically the tip to good battery life is to essentially turn your smartphone into a dumbphone and pretty much cripple it?!

The tips are all optional. If you can't live without live wallpapers, then by all means, use them. However, many users don't know about radios, etc. Very few people need bluetooth, 4G, and wifi all at the same time while the screen is off. I believe that part of having a smartphone is the luxury of being able to make informed decisions about the functions of your device to find your own individual perfect balance between performance and battery life.

So if I turn that feature off, and after five minutes the radio to into sleep mode, and someone sends me an email (gmail push), then I will receive that email?

Not necessarily. You can still make a call or two, maybe write a few smses but basicly don't use your phone and it will have amazing battery life.
I don't have 3d just yet but I'm guessing with that big of a battery (1730mAh) it should easily go through at least 10-15h with moderate to heavy usage.

I'll update the OP. Turn on monitoring. This is done by hitting menu>settings>monitoring enabled. Then after some time has passed, ht menu>monitoring>history>change tab to top apps, and see if anything is above, say, 2-4%.
I'm a new Galaxy S II (and new Android) user, and am a bit disappointed in the battery life of my new phone. It was running down extremely quickly yesterday, only lasting about 12 hours with relatively normal use (sending half a dozen texts, downloading 2 apps, checking Facebook and Twitter once an hour or so for a couple of minutes throughout the day). I allowed the phone to discharge completely and charged it fully last night, but this morning nothing seems to have improved. I burned up 10% of the battery in half an hour sending 2 texts, checking my emails, Facebook and Twitter and downloading and trying out a couple of apps.
I'm anxious to know if there's a bit of a burn-in time with the battery on this thing - does it get better after a few charges? I see a lot of people saying they can have the phone on for a few days in some cases, but that's definitely not my experience thus far.
I've installed JuiceDefender (balanced profile), AutoKiller Memory and Advanced Task Killer to try to sort things out but none of them seem to having too much effect and to be quite honest I'd rather not have to compromise my experience by running a number of apps like this to try to extend my battery life at all (nor do I want to have to turn the brightness right down to an unusable level, or set black wallpapers for example).
Does anyone have any real advice on this? I'm starting to think that switching ROMs might be worthwhile? I see that the leaked 2.3.4 ROM seems to have better battery life - is this correct? I'm a bit reluctant to switch to any other unofficial ROMs as there are so many I wouldn't know where to start. It seems they all make a lot of changes but I'd want to keep as close to the stock feel as possible, just with better battery life.
no one uses stock roms/kernels nowadays. u should flash a custom rom or kernel since they provided optimizations to batt life.

It is argued that task killers and memory killers will only make the problem worse. Juice Defender might be useful if you are using it for scheduling sync and turning WI-FI off when the screen is off, but this feature is only present in the Ultimate edition and you can turn off sync and WI-FI manually if you want. Also beware of rogue apps which are syncing all the time. It is normally the main reason of poor battery life.
Other reason, is that whereas powerful tech specs for phones were rapidly developed, battery technology didn't followed the pace. Our simply batteries cannot cope with our beasts.
Also, there is a thing that it's called "new phone battery blues" which is described as poor battery life due to excessive use of a new powerful toy. After you use your phone normally, for the purposes that normally people use a phone, your battery life will became better.
That said, personally I have a spare battery and a spare charger, and when the battery being used is low, I replace it with the charged one. Sometimes it is necessary, sometimes not.

They also have a tendency to look very tacky I think though. I think Samsung's skin and widgets are pretty nice and don't care too much for the mods I see in the screens of most ROMs. I'm really looking for something very similar to stock, except with better battery life if there are any suggestions? That's why I was thinking of just jumping to the leaked 2.3.4 if it had any noticeable impact on battery life...
Try using better battery stats, link in my sig, to see if you have any wakelocks, the thread has a good howto on using it.
The biggest thing that uses the battery on this phone is the screen, you will get between 4 and 6 hours of screen on time depending on usage and screen brightness.

Fair point - not all of the roms are everyone's cup of tea. My advice, as a starting point is to flash the stock XXKH3 variant for your area, and then flash a custom kernel, such as Ninphetamine's or Hardcore's Speedmod. This will greatly help with battery life, and also give you the ability (via root access) to use Titanium Backup to freeze apps and services you're not using, which is often the major cause of battery drain through 'wakelocks'; apps that prevent your phone from entering Deep Sleep, or continuously wake it up.
Update to the latest version in your area, uninstall those task killers and whatnot or do a factory reset, install the apps that you are going to use normally like facebook twitter and install better battery stats, decrease brightness to your most tolerable level.
use the phone normally and when the battery is low, use the tool provided in android to check if your phone is sleeping when the screen is OFF, if you are having wakelocks, then use better battery stats to find which apps are causing the wake locks.
No need to install battery management apps, or task killers or memory optimization apps (or as custom rom as yet), that would only compound you problem which may be a very small one to begin with
Thanks for the help so far guys. I've installed XXKH3 and flashed hardcore's Speedmod kernel, and am just getting things set back up the way I like them again. I'm going to uninstall the battery saving apps for now and see how the battery lasts the next couple days.
I'll install Better Battery Stats and keep an eye on any wakelocks too.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - it was all very simple and quick to get set up; the sheer number of kernels, ROMs, etc. is all a little overwhelming to me right now, being new to Android!

wow, good for you
I used HTC Desire before this device, and the roms on there actually hindered battery life, even with all the fancy underclocking, so I am betting, without even attempting to brick my phone, that they are just as overhyped on this phone too.
I get two to three days out of my phone, using it as a PHONE. I can send and receive emails and texts all day, along with phone calls and the occasional browsing and still get at least two days before it dies. I turn off data when I dont want it and stick it in 2G mode and it dares me to kill the battery.
Just let usage settle down and it's fine

That is wrong. I used to have a UGKG2 ROM and since I upgraded to XXKH3, the battery is MUCH better while the GPS pinpoints in less than 3 seconds with a 5meters accuracy.
I have serious problem with my Xperia S battery.
My battery runs over very fast and when Im charging my phone and I play a game the same time. I am thinkng of rooting it just to make my battery last longer but since Im new here and I haven't attended to root a phone yet I would be glad if you could answer some of my questions like:
1) Would rooting affect my battery life?
2) What risks do I take?
3) Any other suggestion?
I have tried many apps in the past like advanced task killer (which auto kills every app when screen is off), I deactivated Contacts and installed exDialer and I have reduced my screen's brightness to about 20%. Im desperate because Im leaving in holidays and if my phone continues like this it will probably be a pain in the *bip*
*My search on extended batteries was pointless since XS's battery can't be removed except you unscrew some screws. (not sure about that phrase)
Thanks for time and sorry for any mistake I possibly made!
1. No, but installing custom ROM's may increase battery life.
2. Bricking it, but the rooting procedures for XS is pretty simple.
3. Yeah.
Go to settings -> battery. Whats using most battery?
I also recommend you installing "GO Power Master" from play. With this app, you can see what hardware AND app using battery! Very nice app.
Then close the apps that may eating your battery.
And every widgets on the home screen and in the top statusbar also draines battery. Also make sure autosync is off if u want to save battery.
Good luck!

Wifi cannot increase your battery life...
I'd suggest rooting the phone that way you can uninstall system-apps and uninstall bloatware. Alternatively try stopping unnecessary apps running under options-> Apps. Playing games will greatly reduce your battery life... If I play final fantasy 3 for two hours I'll lose 40-50% battery life! Rooting it's fairly simple... Of course there is always a risk. Ensure you have full battery if you choose to root...

Even when we had 2.6.x kernel there WAS battery drain
Sent from my GT-I9082 using xda premium
Guys before flaming, try AOKP JB 4.1.2 Milestone 1 by Bytecode, you'll notice the difference in battery life. It's based on 2.6 kernel
actualy JAVA causes battery drains:
"What’s the worst thing about Android which iPhone does not suffer from? It’s battery drain. With the battery strength most manufacturers are putting in the phone, it appears, 3 years down the line we would need car batteries with the tablet and phones (I’d prefer carrying my CPU on head anyways)! This is one thing where iPhone beats Android hands down and proves its pure awesomeness! But we believe Apple hasn’t put any patent on that word so we can use that for Ubuntu Phone as well.
The reason Android sucks (the phone’s battery) is ‘Java’. Most hardcore tech geeks (aka hackers) call Java a pathetic language. We’d call it (and .NET) a technical eunuch – it is not compiled to binary, it is not interpretable as a script and what do you get – a false sense of security. Yep, under certain circumstances, it is beneficial but then (whatever happened to reverse engineering techniques) a Mobile OS and Java? That sounds like a troubled marriage. Java is one of the biggest reasons why Android under-performs. A significant amount of power gets consumed for the bytecode interpretation. Alright, it is technically not the bytecode as in Java SE/ME and is an optimized and converted version of the same which runs on the Dalvik VM but it’s still far from binary." from here http://www.c-integration.com/blog/showpost.php/75-5-reasons-why-ubuntu-phone-can-blow-away-android

I'm using google apps on aokp jb, no battery drain
Well,in ics you can flash a 2.6 kernel.I used it too(4d kernel by S'n'S),but not because of battery, but in terms of performance is way better than 3.0.x.However I admit that on 2.6 the battery is a little better. You just have to optimize the phone corectly !

not necessarily direct battery drain..but cause Wakelocks which increase battery drain
battery drain is, I think, now native in Android, it depends only how bad is it, some gapps make wakelocks preventing deepsleep, and wifi that is really a big trouble with 3.0 kernel, and since we do not have an 3.0 kernel designed specific for O1 and has an increased battery drain(especialy wifi drain) did someone used an special app like SetCpu or CPUMaster that has profile settings for over/under clock that you can set to see if this app prevents wakelocks with 3.0 kernel ?
and, the battery drain is increasing as OC or no ? in my opinion it shouldn't be, or not? a drain is a drain and should be same or is exponential ?
so OC makes CPU drain more, gapps drains too, wifi drains, outch, poor battery, screen drains? cannot read anything on phone in daylight if it's not at max, what does more drain ? some funny apps installed from market for my kids (like Talking Friends, Talking Tom etc) why apps does not really close when you close them? here is an major issue, apps not really closing but run in background draining juice and creating wakelocks
so, my conclusion, EVERYTHING DRAINS BATTERY, oh, and does anyone remember if stock rom has battery drain? I think yes
And YES, the kernel 3.0 is a bit problematic, you notice the difference in the duration of the battery... the deepsleep is not working fine with that kernel!

@hariraj96, you're on JB, right? Try getting the Greenify app, then use it to hibernate problematic/resource consuming apps. I find that using Greenify along with CrossBreeder (performance & battery saving tweaks, found here on XDA) helped me get the most out of my battery when using JB (jenkins build).

This is CrossBreeder. It's a collection of tweaks/mods that, IMHO, works really well in smoothing out the performance and user experience of a phone like the O1. Simply flash the mod, and you're done, no configuring required. The governor tweaks and IO tweaks are disabled by default, though, so you'll need to enable them yourself (I find that enabling them helps with battery life slightly).
A caveat: CrossBreeder is incompatible with many other mods that do similar things (eg. V6 Supercharger, Seeder, etc.), so you need to remove those other tweaks if you want to try CrossBreeder. You shouldn't have too many tweaks installed at the same time, anyway, since you run the risk of conflicts.

Oxygen ROM, the best!
You, guys, never tried Oxygen 2.x by popdog123! It's actually the ROM which is the most optimized for our phone! Leaving the 3G on during the whole day, while being connected to my home router only spent 3-4% of my battery! Can you imagine how long your phone can be running on a single charge?! Trust me, this is a revolutionary ROM for our beloved smartphone

Please, somebody open my eyes to choose correct ROM for battery life.
I only care BATTERY LIFE.
CloudyFlex , Optimus Pro , coudy G3, pardus, or else .......... which one?
ROM choice is less important than kernel choice. Dorimanx, sovaca, and Render build great kernels.
im using now CloudyFlex 2.6 but i don't know which kernel in it. What is your suggest for CloudyFlex 2.6 ? Thank you for your replies.
Either dori or sovaca will be fine. Render is only for AOSP. Just be sure to flash the right version for your phone and nandroid backup first

make sure you also use:
- autostarts: to prevent apps that update/check through internet all the time and wake up your phone all the time to see whther you got a new post. You would be surprised by how many triggers some apps will start and run services in the background.
- greenify: to put apps to sleep while your phone is off.
- check the settings for some of your apps: many apps want to know your location or anything else every 2 minutes and that doesn't let your phone sleep properly.
I use cloudyflex 2.6 btw. My battery does not lose a single % when I am not actively using my phone.
I run Plain-Andy with Render in ART, absolutely zero "battery saving" apps or settings, I easily get 1-2 days without a charge, right now its sitting at 51% 1d5h30m with 2h30m screen on.
I got the same battery life out of Mahdi and G3 port.
Battery saving apps are a gimmick and just more apps to run in the background.

They are not only "battery saving apps", I _hate_ it when apps come on when I don't specifically tell them to... I don't trust them.
I haven't tried without autostarts/greenify, I might get same battery results.
Then again, if you tried with them you might get even better battery
I do have a flatline battery usage when I am not actively using the phone (or running major backups in the background).
i dont like and i dont trust any app related "Battery perf.-Cleaner-Ram-etc" . But I dont know why, i just like Greenify App.
What do you think of Greenify? is it necessary or does it works?
Dont root. Ever since I rooted my battery got worse and worse. Even after returning to nonrooted stock. I regret rooting my G2 because stock worked great. Best battery life = dont root.

May be right, my be not... it's what you think and i respect your experience.
Let's my thoughts: first af all, i use 10c stock rom first and then 20d and then 20c. These are good roms i know but i think that these are only for normal users. Everything in system is normal level with these roms. I dont like limited use.
I want to change notification bar, navigation bar, and some colors... I ve bought a android phone because i want to interfere in systtem when i want.
my test results:
10c-20d-20c = slide photo view(nonstop), screen time 4h35m and 5h40m
In the same way, other custom roms : 6h10m and 7h35m (optimus pro-cloudyflex-g3)
wifi = on
brightness = %100
remain battery level= %8
NOTE: onlly use single Rom, dont any other app such as cleaner, battery saver etc.
If i use lots of apk with custom roms, my battery is getting weak.
You want a rom with the best battery life? Stock! Stock rom should be your answer :silly:

That's just an illusion. Rooting won't affect your battery life, giving root permission to apps would. Root permission isn't something trivial, just keep that in mind.

Stock rom, bildiğin LGnin kendi romu. Daha ondan daha iyi pil ömrü sunan rom görmedim. Eğer uzun zamandır stock kullanmıyorsan mutlaka dene, 3-5 tam sarj sonra pil ömrüne bak ne demek istediğimi anlarsın
Stock rom, the one comes with the phone. It has the best battery life, from the ones i tried at least. If you are not using stock rom for a while you should give it a chance.

Stock is definitely the best as far as I tried. But would recommend giving Cloudyg3 a shot, I'm getting great battery with the out of the box kernel.
The whole battery life quest is always a bit hard to measure because everyone expects something different.
I've tried every ROM there is. I'm not exaggerating. Stock will always give you the best battery life without needing battery saving apps. But if you then use battery saving apps on stock it gets even better.
I find the biggest savings are through apps that control how your phone uses data while the screen is off and control the CPU while the screen is off.
But if you don't want to tweak anything or use apps to do so, then a nice clean stock ROM is what you want. Because each dev has different goals you may just have to try each one until you find one that meets YOUR requirements.
For nice clean and thoughtfully tweaked stock ROMs I'd recommend Lightning V4 or worship ROM.

My device isn't great on battery by any mean but with "taking a pictures (10-15), a short video (2-3m), Data open all day, 30-35m calling, messenger and whatsapp all day", by 7pm when I come home from work, it would still have 70% - 80%
