[Q] smart dialing is gone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Sprint/Credo CDMA Samsung Galaxy S II (SPH-D710) with ICS, not rooted.
The phone used to have smart dialing (aka T9 dialing), where by typing the first few letters of a contact name in the phone dialler, that contact would be selected. Great timesaver. This was a stock feature, not something I got from a 3rd party app.
This functionality is now gone, i.e. all I get is the numbers I dial.
I have not installed anything or knowingly made any setting changes that could have caused this.
How do I get smart dialing (T9 dialing) back?
Thanks!

[Q] Timestamp keeps showing 4 hours behind.

Using my new Atrix (from bell unlocked to rogers) and am getting a time stamp of 4 hours ago for all my incoming messages. the good news is that it doesn't shuffle the messages in terms of the order its displayed. I am assuming this is a setting fix that I can't find. I have gone in to date and time and have it set to the network time and it still happens.

No need to poke fun lol.
We all know how to use google, and more often than not google leads you to an xda website anyway.
People come to XDa because we are friendly and help.
As for the original question, what timezone have you chosen in your phone settings?
cute..real cute.
I rarely start threads as normally things are found through searching, the problem I had was that its a rogers android issue while I was looking to see if it was a problem with the atrix. (never used rogers in my search)
For anyone that runs into this problem and finds this thread, it is similar issue to the "pay phone" issue where because it is a bell phone and bell does certain things differently than rogers. In this case bell corrects the timestamp for you, while rogers has the device do it. much like bell doesn't have name display and rogers does. so the atrix wasn't designed to change the timestamp with its stock sms app. two potential fixes, use a different sms app like handcent or try the sms timestamp fix app
My nexus one didn't have this issue (thus me thinking it was atrix and not rogers+atrix)
Thanks to both of you for replying, snarky or not.

The call display "pay phone" issue is due to some phones are not coded to handle the Rogers' name display feature. If you have this issue on the Atrix like I did, simply call Rogers and ask them to exclude the name display feature as it's messing up your call display. Call display should start to work properly again within minutes.

Right. I use the free app "sms time fix" by Matthew Precious. It's small and doesn't use much resources, and simply setting the offset method to Time Zone fixes this bug in the Rogers network using many Android phones.

Both HTC phones I used experience the issue on Rogers. The iPhone and older "dumb" phones do not. Not sure about BlackBerry devices.

T9 search in stock dialer

Hi everyone,
I hope to consider this post in the good section, because I think this problem could be solved by a developer.
So, what's about?
I'm coming from a WM device (HTC Touch HD) and, having a huge amount of contacts, I discovered a problem with the stock dialer.
In my old phone dialer, when I searched for (by example) letters JO it returned all the contacts containing these string in name, surname or company name, like this:
Doe, JOhn (Acme Inc.)
JOhannes, Mike (McNeill Co.)
Power, Paul (JOss Ind.)
In my SGS2 (as well as in the Galaxy Tab) stock dialer, the results returned are only the contacts where the name starts with JO: JOhannes, Mike.
Also, the stock dialer isn't showing the company name and, because I have more persons with the same name, I often make confusions and call the wrong person.
Question: can anybody correct this problem and/or modify the stock dialer in order to return all the relevant results?
A related problem is with the anwer screen where only name and surname are shown. Will be great if could be shown the company name also.
P.S. there is a dialer who already can do a real K9 search and snowing all the relevant results: aTAKEphONE. But I prefere to add as less as possible other application to my phone. Also, the above mentioned dialer does not make video calls.
So, what do you think guys ?
Could we have a real K9 serch in our stock dialer ?
Regards to you all !

Same problem as you mate, the dialer sucks due to this fact. I went for go dialer instead. Works well and has video call (i think...?) And nice grouping of contacts if you have lots...
At least it gives the correct search if nothing else
I'd too stick to the default dialer if it actually worked.
Good luck, and please post here if you find a hack for it.
-E
if you mean t9, try dialer one from market.

Yes, sorry...
I wanted to say t9
To reply to the other posts, neither GO contacts nor Dialer One fits my needs. I've tried almost dialers...
And want to have the t9 for the dialer section and not for it's contact section.
So, I also hope that some skilled developer will find a solution for us.
I'll keep posting any news anyway.

I'm curious but what about dialer one isnt meeting your needs? It searchs first and last name and by number, in both contacts and call logs, all similtaneouly. Brings most often contacted to the top, etc. I'm wondering if its the company name? Not sure as that gets included in the return as I have my contacts set up by name except where then company is the name itself and then I have different numbers set up under that contact. Just curious as I'm always looking for a better mousetrap. I'm sure someone will be along to point at that requests do not belong in this section as stated in the faq above.

Yeh Dialer one searches business name and just about everything in the contact info. I wouldn't go back to stock even if it did search properly, even though that is why I left it. I personally don't see whats missing in Dialer one either so curious what the topic author finds is missing.
Edit: Except he DOESN'T want T9 when searching contacts and only in the dialer. Not sure of the reason for this but hey. He could always use the stock contact manager still and only use the dialer for making calls.
Oh, I assumed he was using T9 search. I dont even have a contact shortcut on the home screen. A lot of people don't realize its actually less clicks to get to a number through T9 on the dialer than any other search method.

I agree. Pretty much all contact methods are easily accessable in Dialer one by entering just a few numbers for detailed t9 prediction then clicking on their contact photo choose call, sms, email, video call, full contact info, facebook, google maps.....
Jus thought I'd say I have no affiliation with Dialer one, just a happy user
I hear you. The stock dialer is woefully inadaquate in terms of enhanced functionality and search. Was used to much better before I got to android. Like I said though, always looking for a better mousetrap or just learning something new that makes things either easier or faster.
I have been using Rocket Dialer. its the best i saw amongst all T9 dialers
Guys,
First of all, this post was intended to rise a challenge for developers for finding a solution to have a real T9 search on the stock dialer.
Second, I agree that there are many other dialers out there, most of them better than the stock dialer.
Third, Dialer One does not show the company within the returned results. So, if you search JO and you have more "Doe, JOhn" you will see these results without knowing who-is-who. Will you going to open each one in order to find the right John that you want to call?
Anyway, the discussion slipped to a discussion about different dialers, as I can see. All right, maybe this could give ideas to a good developper for implementing the best funtions in a new dialer... or to modify the stock one.
Keep posting, maybe will improve our Android smartphones.

Ahh so you want to show the company name in in the results. Now I re read your message its pretty obvious now I think of it... Ooops.
I agree maybe we should list things that people like from all dialers and maybe some devs can add these functions to the stock dialer.
I thought you meant search say "Nike" and show all people who work for Nike.... of which Dialer one does but it will also show your best mate "Nikelodeon Smith" as well... but will not show the company name in the search names....
Thank you for your suggestion. Can you try please to post a screenshot with a search result ?

I'm glad that you saw the point. Where I want to arrive is: using our Android handsets also for business, not only for fun.
This is mean that they really should be SMARTphones, helping us to use them better and faster.
Ar regarding your suggestion, let's do it!
I'll start a new post for that purpose and I'll post the link here.
Meanwhile, everybody is welcome to post here their suggestions.

Are you referring to searching for company names too in the dialer?
After reading this post I found this app that does it well - Eir Fast Dialer.
You do have to go into the settings to enable company names though but it seems to work well after that.

Voice Control?

I just switched from Tmobile (MyTouch 3G Slide) to the Verizon Thunderbolt.
I REALLY REALLY miss the Hand-Free (Texting) ability from the MyTouch...
Is there anyways to get the Hand-Free ported from the MyTouch to the Thunderbolt?
(I tried Vingo, I don't like its. And it didn't seem to Read Incoming SMS)
Just download handcent SMS.
Sent from my rooted T-bolt using my fingers!
Its not just the lack of HandsFree Texting on the Thunderbolt.. Its the Call Announcing through Bluetooth, and other features within the HandFree app on the myTouch...
I don't want a Third-Party Messaging app, when the one within Android works just fine.

Well Maybe you should be laughing at yourself for being douchie, because the HANDS-FREE Feature from the MyTouch is not built into the SMS App. Its a whole different app. If I'm not mistaken its apart of the Genius Button; Because its Activated by pressing the G-Button>Menu>Hand-Free
So think, then type, then think again before hitting POST
→ Me laughing at myself.
The feature you wanted was specifically built/integrated for the phone in question (through proprietary means) and was not built by HTC. That is why it's not in every HTC phone and why you won't have it on the Thunderbolt without additional software you claim you can't stand.
"Genius" is a custom voice command and text-to-speech system powered by Dragon Dictation technologies. The button replaces, and is in the location of, the Search button previously on the myTouch 3G.

Properly built third party software is as good as anything that comes on the phone or better and has the same means/access to build their apps as the OEM.

Yeah, I mean I don't understand what the OP wants and thus is a pretty useless thread. He knows our phone lacks a certain feature that he seems pretty passionate about having, but yet says the SMS on the phone works fine and does not want a third party alternative (despite the feature on his old phone technically being a third party feature, just one that came with it and porting it would be the same as installing something in the market).
I would recommend using a keyboard that has voice control in it like swype (and there's some others), but I wouldn't to look too "douchie" by recommending third party apps to the OP.
Apparently No one seems to get the Idea here.
I don't want a second SMS Application such as Handset. I never asked for that.
I ASKED FOR the TEXT TO SPEECH application that is built into the MyTouch 3G Slide.
the HandsFree app from the MyTouch 3G support Voice Texting, Voice Calling, etc. When a new SMS Message arrive, the phone Announces the sender, and asked if I would like to read no, or later. Then after the application reads the TEXT, it give the option to REPLY, which can then be done through voice... So Never do you have to touch the phone while driving.
The appication from the MyTouch that handles all that has been the best HandFree application I've seen yet. And I've had nothing but Android phones since the Original G1.
I asked for that one application, because I figured with all the smart people on this site, they might have been able to extract it from the MyTouch at some point. The CM7 for the MyTouch has it. I've tried to look within the zip for the application (apk) that might be responsible for the HANDFREE app, but have yet to locate it.
So in the end, If I wanted to try one of the 30000000000 other SMS/Text Apps out there I would have asked for it. And technically I orginally never asked for a SMS Application. I asked for a HandFree (Speak-to-text, and vis versa)
Well here's my stab at it. Voice Control is proprietary software by Nuance (Dragon Dictation Technologies) meaning even if we did find the apk or were able to port it, it would be considered warez which is against the rules of XDA. All apps by Nuance are paid apps.
Nuance Voice Control Webpage: http://www.press-and-speak.com/PressAndSpeak/2338
Nuance and T-Mobile had an exclusive agreement to implement this software on the myTouch 3G/4G. I'm sure later on other devices will be supported. The only download they have for Android is the flexT9 keyboard for $4.99 . They seem to have all their apps available to the iPhone however.
However when I asked about alternatives, someone recommended Vlingo Virtual Assistant for reading SMS in the Android Market. Not sure if it has the same exact features as Voice Control, however its a close alternative.
EDIT: nevermind noticed you said you tried Vlingo. My bad
Edit 2: I know you said you did not want alternatives but Drivesafe.ly can read txts to you and the pro version let's you respond. I really don't think there are free alternatives for a fully featured app other than Vlingo.

[q] sg2 lte shv-e110s

Hi,
I have just bought a Coreen Galaxy S2 4G LTE, hte model ref is SHV-E110S, I want to know if I can root it like the regular S2, and if I can install any S2 rom on it
Unlikely you can run any ROM on it, since it appears to have a different CPU (and probably a whole load of other differences), but in terms of root, you could try zergRush at your own peril.
thank you for the quick reply, I'll tray to find a korean forum.
Any Luck
Hey there. I have the same device and wondering the same thing you are. did you have any look in the korean forums?
Hi, I also have the same unit. I don't believe any ROM for this particular unit is posted here, but I would like to ask if the ROM for the first SGS2 (korean) is compatible with this one, 4G LTE...
Just an update of this thread with the same question...... Any news from our experts?
TIA
I think better to see in other thread. Because here is discussed international variant of Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100, that is completelly different with yours model.
Better to see in AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket threads, because its specifications close to yours.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1401
SHV-E110S
Can i use the custom rom of of other galaxy s2 models with same speciications? Will that work? Mine is SHV-E110S. Can i use Rogers S2 lte or other lte models with same gpu and other specs?
Root
I was able to root mine with superoneclick however once I updated to latest ROM using Kies (gingerbread fb13) I was unable to root it. I tried superoneclick and doomroot (both latest versions). The display shows several errors along the lines of file not found. Doomroot would say it was done and device was rooted but it wasnt.
Galaxy Rom
Since I have free time and am not worried if phone is bricked (work will replace it for me heheh) I went ahead and tried to flash the ICS rom for a Galaxy SII on to this phone. I also tried an older gingerbread rom I had found. In both instances phone would reboot and come up with a screen saying update (in white) and a bunch of korean text. I was able to reflash the stock rom downloaded from a korean forum and phone is back to working as it should.
Now I love the phone the way it is aside from the 80 character sms limit and if one of the guru's that knows how to modify these things would be interested in seeing if they could modify the stock rom I would be more than willing to pay (with in reason) for there effort to fix this one thing that makes an otherwise wonderful phone kind of lame.

What SMS character limit ? there's no such thing, phones have to adhere to GSM specifications and those say 160 characters max for one message. You probably have it set to write text in a Unicode-based language, which uses 2 normal characters for one letter (2 characters represented on 8 bits each = one character represented on 16 bits).
Go to Messaging, Settings and under SMS settings check "Input mode", it should be GSM alphabet to give you 160 characters/SMS.

The Korean version is CDMA preffered as Korea uses Usims. However a standard GSM sim works fine. When you go to settings under sms there is only 2 options..unicode and automatic and no matter which you chose it converts at 80 characters. In every phone I have had from Korea at 80 characters it converts to an MMS which is kind of a hassle
Aah, I see. Does it do the same with a 3rd party SMS app, like Go Pro SMS ? I remember there was a similar bug with some releases of Gingerbread (a SMS longer than 160 characters would be converted to MMS instead of multi-part SMS) and the easiest fix was using a 3rd party SMS app.
I have tried go Pro SmS and a couple of others with no luck it still converts at 80 characters.
---------- Post added at 10:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:34 PM ----------
I stand corrected. had not tried Go sms Pro it was another program however I just downloaded Go SMS Pro and I can send standard length messages. Thank you very much
Hidden Menu
In case anyone is wanting to access the Hidden Menu here is how:
from the dialer pad enter *#*#319712358#*#*
When prompted for password enter: 774632
a hidden menu comes up with many different options. I havent gone through all of them as I am not sure what does what. I do know there is one more screen in the sub menus that asks for a password but I do not knwo what it is.
Hope it helps

Thanks but, no dice. I don't (can't) get a window to display like yours! The "Use Call Fail Options" check box isn't available.
T-Mo problem? What's so weird is that I've changed this setting before on other Android phones running on T-Mo.
Really appreciate your help! If you can think of anything else, please let me know!
