1) Why make two threads ? (two issues doesn't count as a good reason, btw. Easy to include both questions in one thread. There's enough crap on here as it is).
2) Nobody can tell you what's going to run stably on your phone. Everyone's phone is setup differently. Try some different roms out & see what works well for you (easy to do once your phone is rooted/is running a kernel with CWM, makes backing up & restoring if you don't like a rom you try a 5 minute job).
You can get stock ICS firmware from Samfirmware, here or get the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google) which will enable you to download stock firmwares by country/carrier (as well as some country specific unbranded ones).

Thank you
Sorry for making two threads.. I'll be more carefull next time

For stock,4.0.3 is more hassle free than 4.0.4.A lot of people still use GB because ICS doesnt run as it should on their phones.
I use either GB or custom setup(rootbox/dreamkernel).
People make the mistake of seeing an update an adopting the "must have" philosophy.
Do what Mistah"MountAthos"Bungle says and experiment or wait a little bit for JB.

What i meant by update os that the XXLQ has alot of bugs and i want to update to a new firmware withcless bugs
Thank you

Havent you read the replies.
Update means go forward(so that rules out GB,doh).
Your on 4.0.3,so that leaves 4.0.4,custom rom or wait for JB.
If you think 4.0.4 is going to be better, then install it.......lol

I suggestr you read a little more carewfully next time because you missed an import forum rule.
DO NOT POST A "What's the best ROM/Kernel/Theme?" THREAD!

Root disappear?

Sorry for asking a noob question, but I just wanna get things clear.
Currently my SGS2 is rooted (just rooted) and is on the stock rom. We all know ICS for SGS2 will be released pretty soon so, once I have updated my phone to the new ICS, will my phone be unrooted ?
Also will I be able to OTA update while rooted?
Thanks for the help

Unless the ICS ROM you install is pre-rooted, in all likelihood, yes, you will lose root.

I'm not sure OTA is even implemented... but if you're just rooted, that shouldn't affect your ability to use OTA if it's there.
Thanks for quick reply.
One more question, once if I've updated to ICS, i do have to wait for the new files before the ICS can be rooted right? I just can't use the same files and method that I used before to get my phone rooted? Correct me if I'm wrong

Yes - do NOT use the same files and method. At best, it just won't work. At worst, you will cause huge issues with your phone.
If you are talking about updating via Kies then yes you will loose root. Also OTA.To re-root you can use the CF-Root method as before as long as you match the root kernel with your stock kernel.OTA updates work if you are rooted but dont work if you have a custom ROM installed.

Flashing any new firmware, unless that new firmware comes rooted, yes, you will lose root. And though it's your choice to try a leaked ICS, just be aware - anything out at this point, as stated is a LEAK. (i.e. NO guarantees as to stability)
I for one, do not plan on going anywhere near an ICS ROM until official ICS is released by Samsung somewhere, for a ROM chef to use as a base.
thanks for the response. Currently, I'm pretty bored with my current stock rom and would like to try something new even for just a month or so. Would you recommend me a stable rom or a rom that you personally use or the one that you are using right now ?

Stable for one person is not stable for another. Only way to know for you is to back your phone up and try yourself.
That said, I'm on stock KI3, with some modding done myself. No themes, though. I don't need all that flash.
Love your well explained answers. Once again thanks for you help

I think the easiest way to keep root is to use Mobile Odin with EverRoot option enabled. This will root the phone during the flashing.

[Q] ICS for GT-I9100 with baseband XXKI4

I am new and have never done any rooting/flashing. I am currently using GTI9100 (bought new and unlocked) in USA. I have a couple of question:
1. I think it should be a Europe version (baseband, XXKI4) . I heard that Europe 9100 has already updated to ICS. SInce I am using it in USA, should my phone update with Europe or USA? I have been checking KIES everyday and still no updates. Anyone knows the projected date of official ICS for my phone?
2. Can someone give me a link of threads for the most current ICS ROM tutorial for my phone if I want to do ICS updates now?
3. For my case, do I root or flash? I am not quite sure of the difference. I just want to use ICS system and have no other needs.

First, this forum doesnt admire lazy people.
There are lots of people that can help you with your problems, but you have to try to do it yourself.
Im not sure if there is an official version of ICS for S 2.
If you want to update it yourself you go to Android development and choose a rom.In the thread you will find what exactly you have to do in order to flash the rom.But before that, you have to flash a CF root kernel for your modem, in order to get a Clockwork mode working, from CWM you can flash your ICS or GB as you wish.
You can find the instructions on how to flash a CF root kernel in here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784
Read carefully, everything.
But, to be more specific you arent missing anything by not running ICS.

I'm also using this phone in the US. You will NEVER get a Kies or OTA update, as this phone is not released in the US.

Intratech's official firmware thread. Found quite easily with a search, or in the stickies in the General section. Alternatively, Official Stock ICS Firmwares, courtesy of Faryaab. Stickied in the Original Android section, right at the top.

No offense, but if you're not sure of anything, your "answer" to his question will only serve to confuse him more.
There IS an official version of ICS.
You do NOT need to root to update to the official Samsung released ICS.
He COULD flash a CF-root kernel, but that isn't what he asked for, and given that he didn't ask to root, but asked specifically for ICS, this doesn't help him.
Read, read, read.....and for the love of god back up your efs!

It should have the option in Settings/About device/Software update, but should use Kies anyway, and latest UK version is 4.0.4

when i connect to kies it says i have the lateset firmware
phone is really buggy and needs sorting asap. Poor effort from samsung i feel...i personally think its a quad core thing as i had similar issues with my htc one x and got rid of it in a few days. My htc ones s however is the quickest and most sold performing handset ive ever had.

As previously suggested, try other firmware. Forget Kies, its crap and only check for updates for your specific firmware, not elsewhere.
Try the link above i posted or http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300here for newer releases.
Just follow the guide by Intratech (he also has some official firmware) for flashing with Odin. Could not be simpler. Just backup anything to PC before hand, and then follow instructions exactly.

really appreciate your help with this but just have a couple more questions
i assume that with odin i can flash any of the firmwares and it dosent matter that my phone is locked to orange (well i believe it is). The phone itself has no orange branding or apps installed.
The other thing i am not sure about is which firmware i should use for a uk handset on orange. If i use a generic firmware will that cause problems with the radio's etc?
The other thing is how do i know what the latest is...i mean i might already have it on my device....it says i have 4.04 on it but are there various versions of this?
Sorry if it seems im being lazy about this but just want to be sure i am using the right one.
thanks again for your help

I believe so, should be same as SGS2. Phone lock should be "sim" lock not locked bootloader.
You can flash the modem or kernel as individual packages if need be.
In phone dialer, *#1234#
Ie. Firmware ending in LE7 is older than LE8
Don't forget to backup anything important to PC first. Best to factory reset first in recovery and then immediately boot into download mode to flash. Follow Intratech guide exactly and shouldn't be a problem.
Just make sure you flash any full package as .tar.md5 file. Zip won't work with Odin.
For thanks if you feel like it

Still no jelly bean for me? :(

I have unbranded galaxy s3 i9300...
Still running android 4.0.4
baseband version: I9300XXLF
Any idea why there is no OTA jelly bean for me yet?
Also, any idea if it should be even available for me ?
Updates are dependent on many factors, including where you live.
Ask Samsung directly
Or root and take control.
Good luck
When it comes to rooting - I'm a total rookie..
Where I can ask samsung about it ?
It's not difficult to root s3
Take an hour, a pc
Search s3 thread for root kit, it's all explained and semi automatic there
Odin is included in above and will be used to root in seconds.
Make sure you understand what you will be doing, follow steps properly. An hour should be enough to read and do rooting
If you need to ask Samsung, go to their website, check contact us section for your country.
sent from s3 running Viking and phenomenal extreme.
press thanks if I helped you
relatively, you can go to sammobile.com and download the latest official jb firmware..
but take not that the updates also depend on the region are currently in.. so if let's say you download the Polish JB firmware, and you are not from Poland... then you won't have to get OTA updates.. you have to update your phone manually
Cheers!
You don't have to root to flash the latest software version...

your firmware version is EM1, check on http://www.sammobile.com what region it is.
it will get updated once there is an update, no one can tell you about when and how often. In general unbranded firmwares get update faster though.
I would recomend you to become root and flash cooked roms, there are many threads on how to do this, in this way, you have plenty options to install(flash) roms as you wish, without having to wait for official ones, think about it, if you are careful and dedicated, you wont regret it

you can also flash the newest stock ROMs without root, hence no need for it.
in regards to custom ROMs you are right though.
