I've been playing around attempting to use VOIP with my HTC EVO 4G LTE, in preparation of testing out the waters if I go with the Nexus 4 and T-mobile. Luckily I have my old HTC EVO 4G, with no cellular data, just wifi. I followed the instructions setting up Google Voice + Pbxes.org + SipDroid (removed after configuring). I am able to receive and make calls from the old EVO, with a some echo. I need to figure out that, but people can hear me, I can hear them, we can hold a conversation. If I do the same thing on my EVO LTE, it's very crappy. I think it's because I'm using AOKP Build #4 on my phone.
So, my question, can anyone recommend a good ROM that will let me have at least a good conversation? I'm going to flash a Sense ROM and see if that helps.

So just did some testing doing voice calls and web / data access at same time (Something cdma phones in the past could not do)
Voice call and on 4G at same time..ok (got 10meg down 1up while on voice call)
Voice call and on wifi at same time..ok
Voice call and on 3G at same time..
No go

This is pretty much how every other 4G phone operates.
the ports backwards, but could an adapter be made?

Voice call and 3g at the same time is a known issue because current implementation of CDMA does not allow for voice calla and evdo data at the same time.
There is something called Simultaneous 1x Voice and EV-DO Data (SVDO) that is a handset upgrade that can allow voice calling and 3G (EVDO) at the same time. Currently Sprint nor Verizon have included SVDO capability on their handsets.
I wonder if Sprint is going to wait until CDMA 1x Advanced is implemented in their Network Vision project before including the SVDO feature in its handsets especially since the backhaul on Sprint's towers are so horrible with T1 lines.
I suspect you won't see SVDO in any handsets until late 2012 or 2013 when network vision is much more mature.

Currently, Only the HTC Thunderbolt has SVDO enabled.
Can't you just go into ##3282# and enable evrc-b and make it work, or maybe that was something else? Remember doing something similar on the evo3d...could be wrong.
Edit: I think I am wrong about that, I believe that may have something to do with call clarity. Also, one thing I noticed is that while you are on a call you cannot enable 4g unless my phone was bugged. Because even after I hung up, I couldn't enable it without a reboot. Kinda weird.

Good find but I did more research on it and Verizon decided not to advertise that functionality on the Thunderbolt since they said the data rates are too slow and cannot support both voice and data. I think its because it is still using regular CDMA 1x. Verizon does not plan to upgrade their CDMA 1x network since their plans are to move to VoLTE once LTE is blanketed across the nation.
Once Sprint implements CDMA 1x Advanced on their network vision towers which allows for more 3 times more resources for EVDO since 1x voice will now use only 1/4 of the amount of resources than regular CDMA 1x, then SVDO should be more feasible to ensure a good user experience with both voice and data quality.

I'd rather take slow data while on the phone then no data anyday...what goes on in the minds of people that make these ridiculous decisions sometimes ...

Just needed it now. Was on a con call and someone emailed a word doc for everyone to review. I turned on 4g so i didn't have to drop off the call to synch email.

Hello, Thought I would post this to see if any one else out there is having the same issues I am having. I have 1.22.351.3 update, I am stock, not rooted (yet, waiting on S-Off with new firmware) I am on 3G only, no LTE, I have 3-4 bars service on my phone, but on 35% of my calls (outgoing or incoming) when I pick up the call or place one, the phone says it is connected but all i hear is silence. I can hang up and call back immediately and the phone works fine. This happens 4-8x per day. My wife has older Optimus phone and does not have this problem. Has anyone else experienced this? It makes me wanna throw my phone through a window.
Chewboxa.
I haven't experienced that. If I were you I would take it in to get looked at or at least try a factory reset.

My EVO does this same thing. I figured it was just Sprint's service. It is very frustrating. My phone is HTCDev unlocked and rooted. It did that on 1.13 and on 1.22. Same issue with different radios and roms.

Similar issue I just posted in a separate thread. Calls never come through or the connection is so bad I can't have the conversation. I was rooted then took the OTA. Started having issues after that.
There's a lot of widespread tower issues so it seems, in Arizona at least.

You can try the tips and tricks on this thread. Didn't work for me but it worked for others

Evo 4g late running stable cm10. Made calls and used data on the way to work but eventually lost the ability to do either. WiFi still works but no calls or mobile data. Any suggestions?

Well I spent an hour and a half with Sprint online this morning activating (well long story but its my EVO LTE). I can make call and texts but have no mobile network (3G or LTE). I have changed all settings using the ##3828# and still nothing. reactivated the phone twice and still nothing.
The Sprint rep told me that there is not much else they can do for me and directed me to call Tech Support. Great so I have a HTC EVO WiFi.
I wish I could help buddy, just wanted to let you know you are not alone.
Mind you at my same desk I had a EVO Shift, EVO 4G, and S2 all that were able to get 3G and WiMax perfectly.

Are there separate radios for talk and data in the 4G LTE?
I've had a Hero, EVO, EVO3D, and now the 4G LTE(all with Sprint), and until this phone, i could never be on a call and receive data at the same time(3G mind you, no LTE here). I've noticed this since I've had the phone, but never asked anyone about it. I'll be using WiFi Tether, and someone will call, then I'll place it on speaker, and watch the app as the data continues to roll in while on the call. It's not just tethering where it works, but any app on the phone. Facebook, Tapatalk, they can all collect data while on a call.
It was my understanding that you couldn't do that on a CDMA network, hence the radio question.
Can anyone help me out understanding this?
Search Svdo. That is what enables you to do that on 3g. If you have lte it will also do it.
Interestingly the new htc one doesn't have this ability. Since the lte network was expected to be quite large by now.

Hey everyone. I recently bought a used HTC Evo 4G LTE and signed up for Straight Talk using the CDMA Bring Your Own Phone activation kit. Everything works great, but I keep losing 4G LTE. I'll get it for a week after calling the Straight Talk peope up. They have me turn the phone off, they do something on their end, I turn my phone back on, and update the profile and bam, 4G LTE. This only lasts for maybe a week until I have to call again to get 4G going again. I am on Viper4G 3.1.7. Could this be why I keep losing 4G? I don't know. Any help on this matter would be so appreciated. Straight Talk customer service can only get me so far. I thank you.
-Kristopher
I would like to know the answer to this too. I'm planning on switching in a month and would like to cover all bases before going in
Can you share what you asked when calling Straight Talk or know what they did on their end? I have the same phone, but lost 4G completely when activating with Straight Talk. All I get is 3G. I've called support twice, and all they tell me is that it's my phone and I need to contact Sprint.
Had 4G when my service with Ting stopped, had 4G when my phone was trying to activate with Straight Talk (no provider), but not after activation.
Any help here regarding what they did on their end would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
