Weight of the Nexus 10 - Nexus 10 General

The Nexus 10 just feels a lot heavier than the iPad 3 and other Android tablets because of the 16:9 screen ratio and large bezel even though it is actually slightly lighter. I have big hands but my fingers are starting to hurt. And yes, there is light leakage in the screen in dark scenes.

The screen!

Is awesome!!! Never had an HD screen before and boy is it cool! I try to look very close, but can barely see the pixels. The colors are also very amazing.
Now the question is can we use a app like voodoo screen tuner and make it even better =p lol

Did it come with the cool sample HD video that shows off the screen like the Intl. has?
As much as I love the high resolution--it is AMAZING for small text--I am more bothered by the PenTile layout than I expected from reviews. I don't know about other people or how close they hold the phone to their eyes, but I can see the hatching pretty clearly in normal use on a white background. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but it makes the whites feel a lot less white than they do on the RGB AMOLED screens I've used. I think I need a Tab 7.7 so I can have the resolution without the PenTile tradeoffs. -_-

I read a review, can't remember which one, that was saying at full brightness the whites were incredibly white and at lower brightness settings it turned bluer. Is that true? Are you at full brightness?

It's not a matter of color reproduction; it's the physical subpixels that look a bit off. It's a subtle diagonal hatching pattern that is visible regardless of brightness. It's not horribly obvious at normal distances but I can see it. Honestly it isn't that much worse than being able to see the square pattern around individual pixels on my GS2--I was just hoping at this resolution/pixel density I wouldn't be able to see it at all.
Color reproduction isn't too bad. It's slightly different from my GS2 but I am not that picky about it, since I don't do serious photography or other art. AMOLED screens all have oversaturated colors anyway.

It's sort of like there is an overlay of tiny black dots in a diagonal pattern. As I mention above it isn't obvious especially at more than a foot or so away, but it is visible.

The screen looks fine to me. People freak out when they find out a screen is Pentile, but this isn't a Motorola pentile screen we're looking at. I'm assuming that there's a technical limitation/challenge with making Super Amoled Plus displays bigger than 4.3" or I'm sure Sammy would be using them in all of their phones. Personally, I'm enjoying the higher resolution. Can you imagine a screen this size at 800X480? It would be worse than the HTC Titan.

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm freaking out.
I'm saying this having used the phone a bit; I have it sitting right here. No argument here, it is way better than the PenTile on the RAZR or any other Moto phone I've used. And yes, I'm pretty sure you're right about the technical limitations preventing proper RGB layouts for this resolution/size, probably something to do with how small they can physically make subpixels, since it is clearly possible to have a 1280x800 Super AMOLED+ display in a 7.7" form factor. I ALSO agree that a screen this large would be awful at 800x480, and I definitely prefer the PenTile 1280x800 over RGB 800x480 at this size. I am definitely NOT saying the screen is bad, but I am disappointed because it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
So we mostly agree. I am just more irritable I guess.

How does the screen work in direct sunlight? I am not wanting to watch a movie, but need it when working outside to read e-mail and use the phone. On my current HTC Tilt 2 I have to find shade to see anything on my screen. I have read that the Super Amoled+ screens are better. I am hoping this will work where I do not have to put on my reading glasses.
One thing is for sure, the screen definitely is an attention grabber. All of my co-workers were amazed and how sharp and clear the screen was.
This screen definitely suffers with some flash videos and dark backgrounds. I can see like lines flashing, doesnt look good at all and thats a turn off because I wanted to watch alot of videos on this. You guys can try it out and see if you see what I see. Go to veetle.com, scrolling down to any movies channel and select it, and make it full screen.....

[Q] Is the Pentile screen noticeable on the Galaxy S III?

I'm thinking about buying the Galaxy S III, but the Pentile screen is really holding me back. I mean, why buy a device with a screen that looks bad and has to be looked at for several hours a week?
I've heard that at high resolution, Pentile screens don't matter. But I want some opinions from all you people out there.
And what would you expect to see looking at a poor quality entitle screen?
My s3 is probably the clearest looking screen I've looked upon

Older AMOLED Pentile Display were bad because they have a low ppi (240ppi on the SGS1)
But SGS3 screen has a 306ppi and the "pentile effect" seems to be not there (at least I do not see it on my SGS3

No matter what? Even if you're holding it like a inch away from your phone? I usually use my iPod touch (I have a Blackberry phone, it sucks for web browsing) when in the mornings when I don't feel like getting out of my bed. I usually hold it just 6 inches away from my eyes.
My S3 has to be the clearest screen I have ever seen. Had it for a few days now and still doesn't fail to amaze me whenever I turn the screen on.
You don't have to worry about holding it 6 inches or even 2 inches away from your face.
Its really beautiful...much better then my Nexus...

I saw the Motorola Droid Razr before I knew what pentile was and I thought it looked weird and pixellated so it's certainely not placebo. At the ppi of the GS3 it doesn't matter imo. I do still notice it (but not like I can count the pixels.. but it just is a little bit different then normal rgb screens) but the screen is still somehow the best I've seen in a phone.
You shouldn't keep yourself from buying it because of this as it not even really noticable, it's the best screen there is imo and it even spares some battery.
I can notice the pentile effect if I stare hard at the screen from less than 10cm away. I've compared my S3 to the HOX and the HOX does indeed has a finer screen. But still the S3 has one amazing screen. The blacks are much better although the colours seems a little over saturated and slightly on the warm side.

Well then I guess you have two options 1.) Wait two weeks and then go look at the phone 2.) Go with a different phone.
The only time I notice the pentile screen is whilst reading some text. It is barely recognisable but if and when you notice it you'll subconsciously start to look out for it. But it is very minor indeed, and changing the font of text helps to more or less eradicate it.
Aside from that minor quibble re text I have to say that this screen is absolutely awesome. Colours and contrast are absolutely amazing. I tend to set the screen mode to Natural as I think this gives the best colour effect.
I know this screen is awesome because when I switch from it to my iPad 3's retina screen I don't feel any degradation, if anything pictures and videos look better on it than on the iPad 3 - and that's saying something!

Yes, if you will use the phone under a magnifying glass
"Super Amoled Plus" will never work with High Resolution. They are not designed for that.
Move up dude
I my opinion It is noticeable, but only at ~3" away and I do have 20/20 vision but in any other situation It's fine, I have even fooled a few friends who own an s2 that it was a 'plus' display but as above you are best going to have a look
Its noticeable, coming from an Xperia S (which I gave to my wife for this phone) and having a G Note which died before the Xperia S, its the same for me as the G Note.
It's mainly around fonts and small icons which is more noticeable, definitely not in pictures unless you have super vision, but most of the time you're looking at fonts or small icons, so yes its there.
But FWIW I wouldn't trade it for the contrast, I've never owned a phone with such contrast (actually the Note was the same), but having said that in sunlight forget using this phone, side by side in sunlight with the Xperia S, the Sony wins hands down.

If so I'm ready to buy. Really ready. No more dead phone in the toilet.

Ya, I'm super excited about this too. I just bought my S4 last week full retail...but I'll probably end up selling it and buying this one when it comes out. Not having to keep a case on the phone and not having to worry about having plastic baggies with me when I go to a game when it might rain...completely worth it.
Plus it's not a pentile screen, so the screen should actually look *better* than the one on the stock S4.

I know I just got more excited, I just noticed it has an LCD screen. I've always hated AMOLED with a passion. PenTile more so.
Samsung screens are dim, plus they wear out, go yellow, burn in, have tint, blotches at night, colors are not accurate, and then there is pentile. Which is even a bit noticeable on S3 though not quite so bad. And to be fair Note 2 is pretty good, and S4 is too. The worst part is how incredibly dim the AMOLED is, it's nuts. However I have gotten used to the nice black levels, that's one thing I'll miss.
We need this on Verizon.

Is it as bright as an HTC One LCD? I haven't compared but I'd imagine it's not even close.
PenTile used to be my main issue with AMOLED aside from dimness. Yes, I agree that is mostly fixed with higher resolution now, although if you look close you can still see it.
The rest of the issues are still valid, particularly how darn dim AMOLED is and how crappy whites look. Generally I feel LCD is still superior overall, and for all those reasons. And I didn't even mention the black crush/contrast issue which I expect still persists.
This is why Active with LCD has me SUPER EXCITED!!

It's still an issue. This phone is downright dark when outdoors in sunlight. I have to shield the phone if I want to be able to see anything at all on the screen. Next to the iPhone 5 or HTC One the difference is huge when in bright light.
I can't wait for the Active...it's pretty much the ideal phone, IMO. Tough, waterproof, and awesome specs.

G2

Our precious OG now has a direct child.
LG G2 will have a 2.3 GHz quad core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, a 5.2 inch screen at full HD, and a 2540 mAh battery.
Neat things added include the volume rockers centered on the back, dual speakers, and no front physical keys.
I think I may be sticking with LG on this round. If they have better hardware quality control, it sounds perfect. My OG is messed up thanks to quality control. Yellowed screen, dead zones in the screen. Power wise it is fine, but the quality is lacking.

I don't get why people say this. Yes, the on-screen buttons do take screen space but that's why they made the bottom bezel smaller and the screen taller. Plus, if they did put hardware buttons/capacitive buttons they would be way too awkward to hit on the very bottom of the phone. The way around this is to make the screen smaller and the bezel thick enough to place the buttons in a good position. Thus either way you lose screen space. But at least on-screen buttons allow for the option to turn them off when you want and temporarily reclaim the screen space.
This was actually a big gripe I had about the LGOG. The back button is so awkward to push and spaced too far away. I would have much rather they made the screen a little taller and included on-screen buttons. As always, opinions are opinions.

Absolutely this. Apparently I have mutantly small thumbs or something - I can't reach the whole screen of the LGOG one handed. No bigger for me for a phone. I hate having to compromise on hardware just to get a reasonably sized screen. SGS2 was the perfect physical size.
With the edge to edge screen and lack of capacitive buttons it may not be much bigger than OG.

I agree somewhat.
If we had gotten the same design as every other variant of the LGOG, It'd be my perfect size. As it stands though, the extra bulk added by AT&T makes it ever so slightly too large for my tastes.
The screen itself is the perfect size for me. Big enough to play games and see past my fingers, big enough to read books & watch videos, but still small enough to reach one-handed. If they could make a phone with No/minimal bezel and the same size screen panel, I'd love it.
I'm not sure about the G2's size, but everything else about it looks stellar.

Interesting to see if they find a way of making it manageable. But I find even the OG uncomfortable for extended periods with one hand, and I have big hands. Hopefully edge to edge screens and shaping like the moto x will make it better. No doubt it will even out to a sweet spot.

The note is more popular with women because they put it in their purse so you won't look as stupid until you talk on it lol. The only way I could see anything over 5 inches working is if they have the screen going edge to edge and it's more of a sub 5 inch body.

i've been running the same ASUS 1680x1050 LCD screen since roughly 2004/5. i have two them and they've been running like a champ since. they were $160/ea back in the day, which was a hell of a deal then. but the 6P will be the first device that I own that will have more resolution than anything else in my home.
i think the wife is going to have a harder time getting me off the pot.
You really need to upgrade! I love my 27" 2560x1440p IPS display that I bought a couple years ago. You'll be blown away by the resolution and accuracy of modern day IPS panels.
trust me its on my shortlist. i just thought it was laughable. maybe i can mount a bunch of these phones together on a board to make one giant display.

I have a Dell like this.
Great screen.
Same here ... 1920x1080 at home (except there are two of them).
You should get a 21:9 monitor I have a LG one that's. 34"and 3440*1440 its great for multitasking

Props for keeping the 16:10 dream alive. I've been using my dual Samsung 226bw's (1680x1050) for a long time, but the power supply finally died on one of them, so I'm now using a 32" 1080p TV in the meantime

sigh. that sounds amazing. but i get hung up on the resolution. i'm a 90s computer guy. back then you could buy 21/22" CRTs with these resolutions and clear/accurate colors. it's a shame that it's taken this long for flat panels to "catch up". the variety is 100x better, but to get super resolution with accurate colors and fast response times are only just now becoming reasonably affordable.

Well the only downside to a 21:9 monitor is they top out current at 60hz but I still love mine. I use it for school work and other things its way better than 2 monitors because its a continuous display.
Here's a picture because why not add to the OT discussion lol
please tell me that's on an articulating arm. that looks so ergonomically inefficient.
At work I have dual 28" 3840 × 2160 monitors. At home, just a single 3840 x 2160.
I have dual monitors.. both 2560x1440 (iMac + Cinema Display)
But I think that the 6P is actually 1440x2560 if I'm not wrong which would be one of my monitors but vertically!
The 27" iMac 5k at 5120x2880 is hands down the best screen I have ever laid eyes on.

It's wall mounted so yes it has a arm that pulls out and can swivel left/right and up/down. I'm an engineering student so I need the flexibility of moving it around when I have tons of papers on my desk. I actually have 2 desks next to each other in my office for more work space. The stand that came with it allows it to wobble to much on my desk so that's also why I wall mounted it. I don't see how its unergonomic hnless you assumed it was flat mounted with no articulating arm. I'm probably ranting about nothing by this point it's been a long week so sorry if the above doesn't make sense.

ya i was saying the design is poor without the arm. props to you.
you should hide the cords if that's not an exterior wall. otherwise, you should look in to something like this to clean up the presentation.

I was planning to but I've been too busy lately to mess with it. That picture was form August it looks a little different now. I might get that cable thing you posted.

Same here.
I'd switch to an ultrawide but then I won't be able to multitask different inputs.
It won't for me. Been on the Dell Ultrasharp 2711 for a long time now.
Love my Macbook Pro retina display, I think it's 2880x1800. After you use it, you can't just go back to normal HD. It's fantastic, looking forward to this phone's screen as well.

do you realized the resolution of the macbook pro retina is 1440x900 in OSX, only 2880x1800 in picture and video.
