Hi
How can I upgrade (a zip file, right?) my android 2.3.6 device to 4.0.3 (or later)?
I've found some obscure chinese site, but I couldn't understand anything.
My system's information:
Code:
Model Number: GT-I9100G
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: I9100GXXKL4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-g7b57e17-dirty-Lucifr_1.60uv-300Mhz
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXLB1
I would really, REALLY like to do it via a .zip file from within CWM without having to flash my phone with a PC (as I only have linux).
I am based in Central Europe, if that matters.
(I was told to ask here again, perhaps you should fix the issue with the checkbox?)

Root ICS
At the moment, the leak ICS is only available for the China model i9100g. Our i9100g need different bootloader in order to run this. So, we can't flash it through CWM or Odin. Otherwise your phone will brick if you try.
If you have china i9100g and you want to root on this ICS. Follow these step:
1. Download this CWM & ROOT.rar and extract it. You will have two files.
2. Put the extracted file CWM.zip in external sd card and 1234.zip in internal sd card.
3. Turn off your phone. After that turn on your phone into recovery mode. (press hold menu button, Volume up and power button)
4. In the recovery mode, goto [apply update from external storage], choose the file CWM.ZIP and press yes to flash.
5. Now you should have temporary CWM Touch Recovery, now go to [install zip from sdcard] and choose the file 1234.zip to flash.
6. Reboot your phone and you have rooted your phone.

Why do we need a leak? I thought android was open-source.
Please explain it technically, I am a programmer (without android experience though, only web / desktop on linux).

Yes it is, but as every device is different (chipset, board etc), it has to be released by samsung first. That's what we are waiting for atm.

Oh I see, so Samsung has not been pushing its drivers to the android repo while it has been working towards this release.
But the drivers must be the same as for 2.3.6, right? Why not just use them?
why u r not using Windows 95's drivers with your Windows 7?

Sorry but you have no idea what you're talking about. There have been little or no changes in the linux kernel API between 2.6 and 3.x.
So making an analogy between W95 vs. W7 is like ... geez.
So, are there any efforts to reverse-engineer these drivers / firmwares?
Any news on this issue?

Yeah, any one of them from any country would work. (as long it's an i9100G firmware)
My phone was originally running a UK firmware. It currently has a firmware from Poland on it, and I'm using it in the US.
Though now that you've flashed a firmware from a different region, it now probably won't update via Kies anymore. (if you care about that)

GT-i9000 = Samsung Galaxy S I
GT-i9100 = Samsung Galaxy S II
GT-i9300 = Samsung Galaxy S III
All of South Korean variants have a T-DMB tuner in place of FM radio tuner. They also have Samsung's Korean input system for feature phones as well as Dubeolsik layout in their virtual keyboard.
The SK Telecom SHW-M250S variant uses SK-MMS system instead of OMA-MMS system for MMS. Additional features for SK Telecom users are installed by default.
This SHW-M250K variant uses KT's Wi-Fi CM[clarification needed] instead of Android's Wi-Fi CM to connect Wi-Fi. Additional features for KT users are installed by default.
Because of mobile networks LG U+ have, the LG U+'s Galaxy S II (SHW-M250L) uses EV-DO Rev.B (KPCS 1.8 GHz) instead of WCDMA and HSPA. It is slightly thicker (9.4 mm) than SK Telecom and KT variants (8.89 mm). Additional features for LG U+ users are installed by default

Sounds like you got some bad ROM donwloads possibly, or at least as likely you have stale data that needs wiping. Unfortunately wiping data and cache on ICS ROMS isn't yet known to be safe because of the emmc bug. So you might need to flash an older ROM and then wipe (search how to enter recovery mode to do a factory reset on this device)
Flashing international works but you need the PIT file too.
There's a guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097347&page=119
on post 1182
The good thing is if you use a brickbug safe kernel, you can then wipe before booting.
These are all SKT ROMS for the SHW-M250S (I haven't tested these downloads)
http://w.jkh.kr/gb4/
I've been running an SHW-M250S rom on my 250K without problems, but reflashing one again is giving me a little trouble.. related probably to some old data I haven't wiped in a good enough way (I did go back to a GB kernel and do wipes but something is still fishy). The 250K roms seem a little less temperamental, but I don't know where to find recent ones. I got the recent roms by flashing older one's and then freezing kies (with a process manager) right after it decrypted the rom, instantly before it flashed... then grabbing the file off the hard disk (just search for files > 100Mb written today)
These are some older ones:
http://shomblingteam.blogspot.kr/201...-sii_5143.html
I found the EG26 250K ROM worked well. It's not ICS, but once it's working you can udpate with kies.
The good news is all the ROMS I've found for this phone include kernels modems and secondary boot loaders, so you shouldn't need to worry about something missing other than a pit file for partitioning.
If you actually did use a pit file, you might need a 250K pit file. I think heimdall which I use to flash should be able to grab mine but I haven't tried.
You'd probably be better off to quote all this and move the discussion to the real thread for this device (the one I linked with the guide).

Regarding the problem with the 250S ROM.. it was a wiping issue. I manually mounted and cleared /data and /cache with root access in adb in recovery mode. That worked. Again though the 250K ROM seems less sensitive.
UPDATE:
and the wiping only helped because of corruption that ultimately was caused by heimdall which does NOT work for this device for flashing full roms. This was the source of all the problems I saw.

REVERTING BACK TO SHW-m250* FROM AN I9100
1. Download the firmware from *see below*. Be sure to download the correct firmware for you phone. SK for M250, and KT For M250K. Either choose the rooting version or the normal one.
2. Download the pit attached from this post. Use the m250k_pit(can work on both m250k and m250s)
3. Go to download mode by pressing [Power+Voldown+home button at the same time] then click the Vol up to confirm to go to download mode. There should be big Android in the center of the screen.
4. Run ODIN(run as admin if using win7 or vista) then connect your phone to you pc through a usb cable.
5. Fill up the PDA using the Firmware you got. Fill up the pit using the m250k_pit I provided in the attached file.
6. It should look something like this:

LOCKSCREEN AND POWER BUTTON ISSUES(Need to be Rooted):
For lockscreen and power options you can solve this prob by folllowing this
1. Using a root browser navigate to /efs/imei
2. Create file "keystr"
3. Open it as text and write "ON"
4. Set permissions to rwx rwx rwx
5. Reboot

CONS:
1. Gyroscope not working or buggy(for others it is but for me it's fine. I can play asphalt with no difficulties)
2. Weak Vibration
3. Weak mobile signal or connection. Look for a diffirent modems. Try the one I attached at this post I9100_radio NELP2. Flash it using CWM. I'm currently using it and I don't experience any difficulties in mobile connection except of course if I'm on the comfort room or in mountains. LOL
4. No NFC capabalities
PROS:
1. You can now be at ease at the removal of the irritating 80sms character limitation
2. Your phone is the same as the international I9100. It basically does almost the same.
3. You can flash all I9100 roms and kernels(do at your own risk)
4. No Korean bloatware apps. Like t-map,t-store and the like
5. Rooting is a walk in the park.(easier and have more support)

Hello.
I have been a member since like 6 months. I purchased my Samsung Galaxy SII from Oman in the Middle East. I had rooted it a while back by flashing an insecure kernel. Now I can't seem to update to ICS, I tried flashing the original firmware back but still no luck with the update.
I would really like some help as to how to update to ICS now. And before you call me a noob I have researched how to do it every way possible so just wanted to get some feedback on the best way possible?
On all the ICS threads there is no ICS firmware for my PDA. So I just wanted to clarify if it's safe to flash a firmware with a different PDA?
If so which one is the best which will result in the least bugs (if those are avoidable that is )? Or should I skip this and just flash a JellyBean firmware? If so which one?
Im sorry for all the questions or if they seem very noobish but I have been searching all the threads and can't find a proper answer. If someone could help me it will be greatly appreciated .

Hey I checked that link but there is no ICS firmware for my PDA ( JPKJ2 ).
So what I basically wanted to clarify is that if it's safe or me to flash a firmware with a different PDA. Like the one you showed in the second link? And the jellybean flashing works fine? The firmware is stable?
Thanks in advance.

Why don't you flash ICS 4.0.3 for United Arab Emirates?
Here's the link.
It'll not be advisable to flash the leaked JellyBean, as it isn't very stable. Sometimes the home Launcher force-closes in JB and the lockscreen hangs. So use ICS for now. And it doesn't matter which PDA version you have on your phone... those versions keep changing as new ROMs are out. But don't forget to backup your data before flashing!
Cheers!:good:
Thanks a lot! Worked flawlessly .
Now to root it which method would be the best and easiest to follow? Or will any of them be fine?
Thanks .

1) Download View attachment CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip & View attachment recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-galaxys2.zip.
2) Transfer them to your phone's external memory card.
3) Go into stock android recovery by holding "vol up + home + power" buttons. You will see android system recovery 3e.
4) Use volume down button and choose option -"apply update from external storage". After that choose recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-galaxys2.zip . It will flash and automatically go into Clockworkmod recovery.
5) In CWM recovery, choose install zip (internal or external sdcard - try and see in which one you find it) and then flash CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip .
6) After that reboot your phone and you will have root!

Oh ok. Cool I'll try one of these. I'm assuming the differences between them all are minor ones right?
Also one last question .
If I wanted to get Jellybean on my phone, do I have to first flash the Jellybean firmware on it or can I just flash one of the custom ROM's online?
Or do the custom ROM's need stock JB to be flashed on the phone first?
Thanks for all the help guys.

Nah nah, that is one wrong guide. It is using Siyah Kernl 4.15. Please don't use it with XXLSJ.
For correct procedure follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066404
I used something called xxlsj when i update to official jelly bean .What is this "Syiah kerne"? And i see on your guide "drraptor" is a lot of posts and links . What shoud i choice from there ?

do either of these
Download Philz Kernel for XXLSJ from here http://www.mediafire.com/?2d893461cjg2rbe. and follow these instructions
Boot into download mode. First shut down your device, then power on by simultaneously pressing the power button, home button and volume down key
start odin3 (download Link ) and configure it as in picture below
connect phone in download mode to PC via USB
press start to flash the tar.md5 package

Sorry
1st you are not using OFFICIAL JELLY BEAN that doesn't exist cos Samsung are slow at updating you are using a leak provided by izap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994313)
2nd siyha will not work on this ROM below version 6.0 if you flash this the phone will not boot you need to use siyha 6.0 beta 4 however I wouldn't recommend keeping this as there are still bugs. Try Phils kernel 3.73(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270) or jeebo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062208)
3rd why use a completely stock ROM why not use others such as this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569686) which is stock with the crapware removed and lots of features from the s3 ripple lock multi window etc
Hannibal226 said:
It's a release under ICS but that not directly means it not working on JB.
If u read the changelog of 5.0.1 it also merged JB codes/things (I'm not a dev, but I used it on JB already)
And the 4.1.5 should work on JB, too, as I remind and I won't think the page would link to it if they hadn't test before.

Ended up in bootloop. So if you have working options available in Philz kernel (XXLSJ) , and Siyah v6 is specifically for JB 4.1 why bother with something which will end up in a boot loop

Go to sammobile website (try to use Google if you don't know the link), find the firmware for your phone, download it, download Odin if you don't have it already, then flash using odin, be careful about which regional firmware you flash, or else you might have no network after installing.
For downloading and instructions on using Odin please use the search option in the forum, detailed steps are given by many helpful people.
Hope I helped.
