[Q] WiFi Death Grip - HTC One X+

I have an AT&T HTC One X+. I notice that if I hold it a certain way the Wifi signal strength indicator drops. On a weak connects I got it to drop.
Is it just me or does anyone else seem to have this issue?

This was the first thing I noticed. I can't Skype with my girlfriend because it drops the video call unless I hold the bottom most part of the phone Granted I'm on the 2nd floor and my router is in the basement. I have noticed drops in WiFi signal that I never got with my One S.

Also notice this issue i haft to hold the phone a certain way to go to no wifi signal to almost full

It's an unfortunate fact of physics, that devices this small are affected this way. The antennas are tiny coils of metal attached to the inside of the case. The water in our hands is very effective at blocking radio signals.

Key words: " that i noticed." It was still happening, you just didn't notice/antenna was placed differently/Wi-Fi radio in phone had more power. It's still physics.

Boys HTC its not a gang of amateurs.
Go to WiFi then advanced and tick WiFi the best performance.
Simple.

The only grip when I loose WiFi signal is when I hold phone at the top in some kind of "top cover"... Who holds phone like that?

Already did this...Also got off my 5ghz network switch back to the 2.4ghz deaf grip doesnt seem to be present now

I have the same issue when I hold the phone on the left side.

maybe it's a sign that HTC did not fix the issue that was haunting the original One X.

On the AT&T version I just have to hold it in my left hand. I will have to see if the Advanced WiFi setting helps.
It looks like this phone is more sensitive to the "physics" of wireless signal blocking. I suspect that it might be a power saving measure and that is why there is an advanced setting that uses more power.

That option was there since i know android on Htc with sense not sure how about clear android but I think its there too

death grip?

"Tests carried out by NordicHardware show that the HTC Sensation 4G loses WiFi and Bluetooth strength when gripped in a certain way. Using a signal measuring app and regular audio apps, NordicHardware shows how the HTC Sensation 4G rapidly loses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signal, even if its just sitting flat on the palm of your hand. The loss is substantial, with as much as 20 to 30 dBm down in connection speeds."
Will we see a similar issue with the evo 3d?

The sensation's antennas are built into the back plate while the Evo's arent. Still, you would think HTC would have learned from apples mistakes...
I quickly lose Bluetooth connection on my Evo 4G when holding it in most positions. It cuts in and out just bouncing around in my pocket.
Seems like something you would test before you release a phone. Still surprised at what gets over looked.

I don't have my pre-production EVO 3D, but a test Sensation 4G. I did the death grip 4 times, and nothing happened. I've never encounter that mistake on any HTC device I've had in my possession. Then again, why would I hold it that way? I take those test as if Apple are suffering with that mistake, Android devices must be suffering with it too. That's my opinion, because this is the first time I've even heard of this problem.

A lot of Android phones have this problem... Maybe not death grip but holding it sideways will lose reception with WiFi and even Bluetooth..

Really? Let me try doing it with 4 different devices. Is it WiFi and Bluetooth both on, or is it separately?
Edit: Tried the Thunderbolt, Sensation 4G, Inspire 4G, Droid Charge, and the trusty EVO. WiFi and Bluetooth : no problems.

Yeah, I really hope the Evo 3D doesn't have that issue.. that's just what I need--all my smug iPhone friends coming over and giving me crap.
Can we change the name of this thread to "death gripe"?

Death grip on HTC Flyer?!

Just found that my HTC Flyer is affected by deat grip on WiFi!
Placing my, and perhaps yours too , hand on the bottom of the device will make WiFi signal disappr!
Anyone else experienced same issue?
Contacted HTC already about this issue.
Regards
William
It doesn't happen with mine. I have full wifi bars in both landscape and portrait mode with my hand at the bottom.

No problem here also.....
L.E. yes it happened to me but only if the distance from router is more than 7 meters....

no problem here either if anything id say this tablet gets better reception than anything else in my house couple iphones, ipad, netbook, and laptop all get reception in half my house the flyer gets it everywhere in the house and even in my backyard

No problems with wi-fi, only the button issues when writing. (sometimes hitting the back button by accident).
I noticed the problem too. It goes down from 3 to 1 bar reception.
It happens wen i cover the bottom part, with my hand while in landscape.
Seems the WLAN antenna is behind it.
Maybe on the 3g devices?
@the ones that works, u have WiFi only?
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA App
On my WiFi Flyer, really gripping the bottom of the devise as completely as possible in portrait orientation results in a one bar reduction in WiFi signal strength. Non-issue.
If I try that the WiFi signal strength increases by one bar.

I.e. no death grip on mine as well, no matter how hard I try to cover the lower part of the device. German 3G device, yep.

Well funny story really, i ride a motorbike to work and back each day and i have my phone in my jacket pocket as i use it as a mp3 player and listen to music while im riding, basically i was going down a private road at high speed and my music stopped i looked down felt my pockets and swore rather loudly. Turned around and after about 5 mins found the phone and its case, (still missing my sd card and battery,, it was about midnight) went back the following day and found the sd card and battery, unfortunately the screen was smashed and the lcd was also cracked it powered up but there was no picture, i have noticed after further examination that along the bottom of the handset on the back just above the charging port there is a crack in the plastic and a bit is missing and you can see two springed metal connectore, now whether these connect to the antenna for network or not i do not know, ive been googling non stop and the general idea seems to be imei problems??

Mobo could be damaged. Either that or the antenna is missing. The antennas are located on the right and top of the moon. It is exposed when you change the LCD. If you switched it yourself, check those connections. It's pretty easy to check it.
Right and top of the moon? Also the phone works perfectly if not faster than it used to wifi Bluetooth etc all works is the antenna with the wire that runs down the right anything to do with it ?

Exchange/Replaced

Hello,
So my T-Mobile HTC One has two problems.
Firstly, while restarting the two buttons at the bottom will keep flickering for about five minutes before the phone turns on.
Secondly, the phone's 3g connection (while abroad) keeps going on and off. This doesn't happen on any other device. Also, the battery life has really gone down recently.
What are my options for this getting replaced for a new phone and not one of their replacement phones? Last time, I had the HTC Incredible and went through like 6 replacement phones.
Thanks,
Crazysah
First off when you hold the power button the lights will flash and then it will power off.
That's just how the phone works.
The battery life sometimes can take a day or so to adjust. Mines is pretty good.
And on the 3g I wouldn't know since I get 4g or 4g lte 99% of the time and the other time it's just bars and edge data
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
No no. When turning on the phone, the two capacitive buttons on the button will flicker for a good 3 to 4 minutes before the phone turns on. Never used to happen.
The battery has been going down ever since I started using this phone in May.
3G going in and out only happens abroad, not in the USA.
3g is probably network related if it only happens abroad.

Yeah but doesn't happen on any other phone. So it is definitely a phone problem. What can I do?
Crazysah
I had the Purple tint issue with my first HTC One, and just got my replacement. The camera is definitely way better, no purple tint whatsoever, build quality is better than my first device, no gaps and the power/sleep button is not excessively recessed. But, I do notice the screen of replacement device, the second HTC One, is yellowish compared to my first HTC One. I have been on the fence if I should contact T-mobile, but sorta do not feel the need to go through the process of unlocking, unrooting, s-off, cid, firmware update and running a custom rom.

[SOLVED] - Xperia Z Ultra Poor Signal Reception Indoor

Hello,
I have bought an used xperia ultra off the internet.
The problem is that outdoor I have no issue with my signal. But when I go inside the signal drops and it shows me NO NETWORK.
Is there any solution for this ?
Thank you in advance !
I have tried software update and hard reset with no luck ...
Depends on the type of house you're living in and the general coverage in your area. I live in a concrete apartment and i have excellent coverage, so it might be the coverage in your area? How many lines do you have when you're outside?
Now I am using my sim card in a nexus 4 and i get full signal in the same place where my xperia doesn't.
The cell tower is not very far away ...
So, the house is not a problem ...
P.s : nexus 4 has full signal on wcdma but xperia has no signal/poor signal even on edge/gprs ...
As you can see in the picture, every phone tested with that sim has full signal in the same place. But not the xperia ... I think it's "blessed" ...

Weird. I get better signal than ever with my Z Ultra. Inside on the countryside right now where my signal always was 1-2 bars with most of my other Androids and i often lost the signal temporarily. I'm sitting on full 4 bars now with my Z. Amazing!

Well you are a lucky man, congratulations. My problem is that I bought the phone in a different country and I'm pretty sure that the folks here in my country will deny the warranty ... And going back in the country of purchase is not an option.
Does anyone have a Modem/Baseband that could be flashed to see if the problem still persists?
Thank you !

Problem solved ...
For all of you that experience the same problem, take a hot air gun, heat up the back of the phone, and slowly take it off with a suction cup.
After doing that, check the cable that comes from the antenna to the motherboard. Mine was loose, and I hat to fit it back in it's correct place.
After powering on the phone, the signal is OK !
Attached a photo below:
And a video with disassembly instructions.
Hope that helps you.
Hi there - by antenna, do you mean the whitish cable on the right-most section of your picture?
Another thing, did the back cover stay attached perfectly after you've re-assembled it? I mean using the heat gun on it didn't make it permanently loose?
What about water-proofing?
Thanks!

It would be, but I bought it on ebay and I don't have receipt for it. The other thing is I noticed when the phone is in standby it has full signal when i start using it the signal bars are going down.

Hi. Finally it's working and yes the cable was loose. It's really easy to open the phone. It's the cable on right it's grey and silver ( like on picture) You can buy new original adhesive tape on ebay for £5. I don't know about waterproofness after. I will try when I will get new phone. Hopefully ultra2

I'm surprised you'd even want a new one after dealing with that. Hopefully I don't need the original receipt to get warranty service. I hate the idea of opening up a new phone to solve a problem with a home remedy. As you can tell I am suffering from the same issue.
3G and 4G can have poor reception indoors. See if switching to 2G only helps, even if you don't have mobile data enabled.
It was the only way to normally use the phone. It took 5-10 min and now it's working perfect. Try with Sony service centre, I hope they will do it for you. It's best phone ever, I hope they will make ultra 2.

aaand now I have the same issue. ****ING hell...*****phone ...eh gonna send it in someday next week. I don't have the receipt here so got to go to my other apartment first
a weird solution that worked for me
Hi guys I had the same issue and solved it finally
First I tried your method and checked the antenna cable mine was already in place and fine so I was depressed and closed the phone back.I tried every thing else rebooting, repairing through companion, updating the rom, changing sim, changing network and every thing else. Finally I took phone into service they returned it without the issue and I was pleased too much, but same issue returned after 2 weeks
So I tried a stupid thing that worked like a charm I put 2 pieces of paper under the sim and above the sim metal holder and inserted the sim back then the issue was solved and network is like any other phone finally
It worked for me and I think it may worse a try
Mindgasm
I Just bought my New Z ultra Last month. At beginning i thought that my Z ultra poor signal were normal (90-110 dbm) until I compare to my friend's Z ultra. I realized there's something wrong! I was hopeless till I found this thread. Thanks to Al3xxxinho it worked! The antennA were loose also. Easy to open and I didnt see it Will break the warranty seal if you open, and the back cover still fit perfectly. Now I enjoy full signal bar.:laugh::laugh:
What I did was chanel the preferred network type to wcdma
