I have two HTC Amaze 4G, the one I have been using as my main phone still has the stock ROM Gingerbread 2.3.4 installed, my second Amaze (which is my backup phone that I bought for a great price on Craigslist) is running stock ICS that was already installed on it when I bought it. Both phones are rooted, have 4EXT recoveries installed and are carrier unlocked but still S-ON (I don't want to risk bricking these). I like the stock ROMs, that is why I have never bothered to install any custom ROMs on these awesome phones.
Lately I have been having problems with "insufficient storage" error messages when I try to update apps on my main GB Amaze. I uninstalled most of my apps already but I still have only about 320 MB of free space on the ROM. I like ICS better than GB but since my phone is rooted, I can't do the OTA upgrade to ICS. I created a backup of the ICS OS on my secondary phone with 4EXT which is saved on the external microSD card.
Now, my question is this: If I put the microSD card from my secondary ICS Amaze into my main GB Amaze, could I just restore the ICS backup on the GB phone through 4EXT and it would work or do I have to take additional steps? I have all my data backed up such as apps, contacts, SMS's etc., so starting with a "clean slate" isn't a problem
I read a couple of posts about having to relock the bootloader, then installing the T-Mobile RUU to go back to stock. Since I already have an ICS backup, I might be able to avoid having to go through all those steps. Could someone please help me and point me in the right direction?
Thank you so much in advance for all your help !! HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!

It's not as simple as restoring a backup. The ruu will modify certain files in the phone that are required for ics. You could take the long way and find out which files you need to modify, or take the shorter route - flash the ics ruu. It's not that hard. Just follow the directions and you'll be fine.

I just found this on a site and I believe that there is a step missing, re-locking bootloader in Hasoon's all in one tool, correct?
Do not flash this like a ROM.
To use this you have to....
1. Download it.
2. Rename it PH85IMG
3. Put it on your ext-sdcard
4. Reboot to your bootloader
5. Your phone will apply the RUU.
and you'll be back to factory stock settings.

Yes, you have to re-lock the bootloader.
since i've discovered custom rom's id never think of using stock ever again, and i just s-offed my amaze last night, there's nothing really too it you just have to follow directions properly... and no you would not be able to restore a backup of one phone to another, i have tried and they were alot of complications afterwards with things not working properly and ton's of force close error's even after fixing permissions

Almost a month ago I bought an HTC Evo 3D (My first android phone) and I want to root it but I have a few questions before I do so.
1. Do I have to back up everything on my phone before I actually root the phone? I know it's always a good idea to back up before doing things like this but I really want to know is in the process of rooting my phone will I lose everything (Contacts or anything that's not on my SD card)?
2. What ROM should I use keeping in mind I want to retain the 3d functionality of my phone? Alls I really want right now is a ROM without CIQ but still has HTC Sense3.0.
Please note I have researched this online and came across a few articles on how to actually do the rooting (here and here). I am thinking I don't want to use HTC's method of unlocking the bootloader.
My phone's info:
Carrier: Sprint
Phone: HTC Evo 3D (duh)
Hboot version: 1.5

Well if your Hboot 1.5 then your stuck with HTC dev method nothing you can do about it unless you wanna wait a year for another method.
I never backed any of my stuff up since after you root no point in it. If you wanna unroot you need to have the stock recovery zip which is easy also the stock PC86IMG.ZIP and fastboot oem lock and your unrooted
Not hard to do....
There is really no need to backup all of your stuff to root, as you will not lose anything. I recently rooted my 3d which is hboot 1.5 using the htc dev method, (which as said is the only method currently for hboot) and found it rather easy to follow. Although this doesnt give you the highly sought after "s-off" but it does give you complete root access to your phone, the ability to use apps that require root access and install custom roms/kernels Definitely install a custom recovery and go ahead and do a nandroid backup there, that will backup your entire phone. MAKE SURE you do that before flashing any custom roms/kernels.
As for suggesting a rom I can't really suggest one right now. I have only been researching/using evo3d roms for a few weeks now and to keep functionality the only way is to stay with a sense rom, as most aosp roms are not quite there in terms of wifi/4g/camera/3d capabilities etc. There are plenty of sense roms out there with removed bloatware, and custom themes. Just browse the appropriate development subtopic for your carrier and check out some of the threads listed, most of the devs will be there to answer any questions you may have. But just check a few out, and if you dont like them, no biggie just restore or move on to a different rom. happy rooting.

If you are on hboot 1.5, the htcdev method WILL factory reset your phone, meaning you will lose everything. So only you can answer that question, if you dont want to backup your data, are you ok with losing everything?

As you are new here, you might not know that you don't have to flash a rom when rooting. You can just stay on the stock rom if you want to, and enjoy the benefits of being rooted while on the stock rom. But if you want to flash a rom without CIQ, most of the roms in the dev section already removed it, and the ones with sense 3.0 are labeled so in the titles. As to which one, well that's the beauty of rooting, there is no "best rom" for anyone. Just make a backup of your current rom, and flash a new one. If you dont like it, restore your backup.
I am thinking I don't want to use HTC's method of unlocking the bootloader.

Well there is no other way of rooting hboot 1.5.

i'm not sure how to root on hboot 1.5(if thats what you have) or how to flash with it. but personally, i like using mikrunney v1.06 as my daily rom. everything functions correctly (except 4g i think) but that's not big deal.
and with backing up, everyone else answered that already

Thanks for the info, yes my hboot is indeed 1.5.
Hi! Running into some trouble. I would have posted this in the development area but I am not allowed to until I have 10 posts. I went through the process of unlocking then rooting using amon ra, but thats the last thing I did right. I was in recovery and made the mistake of thinking I could restore an old nandriod, which happened to be from my bionic. Well now I am stuck at the HTC white screen and cannot get anywhere. I downloaded the all on one kit and successfully booted into recovery using it, but even after doing a full wipe I cannot get anywhere. I am new to HTC and with a moto device I would have just sbf'd back but I dont know what to do at this point. Any and all help would be appreciated, thanks!
What did you try to restore and dis you install re install the kernel for it
sent from ics land
I tried to restore a nandroid backup which is what I am guess caused the issue. I am new to HTC and its process, so I am unaware what you are asking by kernal. I unlocked the phone and installed amon ra 3.14 and that was it. Once it was installed I went into recovery and tried the backup, which I am now regretting. Sorry, completely new to this process, thank you very much for your patients
Just download a new ROM in the development thread.
Okay, thought that may fix so I have been downloading one, just hasnt finished yet. Once completed, do I just move it to my SD card, pop it into my phone, boot into recovery and load the zip? Never done it before, just want to fact check.
Is it an ICS or GB ROM?
It is one of the ICS roms....sigh, lol, guess that complicates things. Well, since I have already gone this far, should I go ahead and just relock, load new leaked RUU then unlock and load ICS rom OR forget that, download a GB rom and just flash it?
No you're good with downloading an ICS ROM. Did you also download the PH98IMG that goes with it?
I downloaded earlier when trying to root with Amon Ra and and got a message that it was out of date, so I thought it PH98IMG was Amon Ra from what I read in the forums and downloaded the new 3.14 and loaded that. Was I mistaken? If so, what is PH98IMG? There is a wealth of knowledge on this site, just really hard to piece it all together, lol, thank you again for your patience.
I was confused at first on what it was, too. I may not be 100% on this but it's essentially the kernel for the ROM. Since we don't have s-off we have to manually flash kernels in HBOOT instead of just flashing them in recovery.
What you wanna do is rename whatever the kernel is to just PH98IMG(it usually has it already in the name). Delete whatever comes after it. So it will say PH98IMG.zip afterwards. Then what you'll wanna do is put it in the root of your sd card. That means don't place it in any folder.
Flash the ROM first in recovery then go into HBOOT and it will read the PH98IMG.zip and prompt whether you want to update or not. Hit volume UP to update and then reboot and you should be good.
Also, make sure you delete the PH98IMG.zip from your SD card before going back into HBOOT again because it will keep asking you if you want to update it. This will prevent you from getting into Recovery from the Bootloader and if you ever get stuck in a bootloop, like you just did. The only way to get back into recovery would be to remove SD card and connect it to another phone or Computer and delete it that way.
Woah, excellent, just want I needed, some simple breakdown of everything. Once last favor, I searched for the PH98IMG(cant remember where i got it earlier) and there are alot of items named the same thing. Can you point me in the right direction of the one I need?
Which ROM are you trying to flash?
CleanRom 4.0
Well, actually you will need to relock and download the RUU if you want to use that ROM.
ok, downloading the RUU now and have the Rom downloading as well, once they are finished I would relock, load the RUU, unlock then load the new Rom right?
Yes that is it. While running the RUU follow the directions from Scott to the T. He has them posted in the first post, or at least a link to his directions.
I tried looking around, but a lot of the posts were from mid/late 2011 about this.
Currently my EVO 3D is still on stock Gingerbread.
I tried to lookup a stock ICS rom, but almost all of them are custom roms based on the stock rom. Basically, ATM all I want to do is upgrade to a rooted version of the sprint ICS rom, not install a completely custom rom. Also, I have heard that with the official rom you can upgrade without losing any information. Is it possible to do that with ANY of the custom roms or would they all require me to backup my data because it will have to reformat my phone? ATM I am not looking for a custom rom and really, just want to be able to upgrade to the stock ICS while still having root purely so I can delete all those annoying preinstalled apps.
Will backing up data from a gingerbread rom and then restoring it to a ICS rom cause any problems?
And I have no idea how to go about doing it, I know I should at first use the temp root just to backup my information.... but I am lost on the whole S-OFF and flashing from past that point thing.

So, he mentioned I won't loose root if I am dev unlocked? What about if I use a 3rd party unlock method? I remember reading that HTC's unlock method still leaves some aspects unlocked while the 3rd party methods can fully unlock the device.
And can anyone help me with the other questions I asked?
Thanks

The HTC method will leave you with unlocked, s-on. That is what some folks seem to to refer to as the partially still locked issue.
I would just use the HTC method, and then use the wire trick method to get s-off. Then you are unlocked and have control of what ever you want to do.
When it comes to the roms, you need to do a little research and make sure you have compatible components. If you upgrade to the latest H-boot, then certain roms will no longer run. Personally I am running the cool rom as of last night, but have been on mean rom for the last couple of weeks. I have been using the "other kernel" with hboot 1.58 and things have been pretty good.
The meanrom 2.6 is a good choice for you in my opinion as it will give you root access with as close to stock as you can get. It has the kernel and new hboot instructions in it also so I would consider it a good fit for what you are looking for. I do not believe you can overclock the kernel it comes with, but you did not request that.
As to backing up your data. Everyone will have their preferred program or method. I have purchased the rom tool box pro edition from market, I use it to back up apps and data. Regardless of what you use, be careful when restoring the backups. I restore data like wifi, messages, contacts. I do not restore the system data, especially if I am changing between roms as it is much easier to type in a little data than to figure out why the thing is unstable.
It just takes a bit of research, but all the information you need is available.
Have a good weekend.

But dosen't the HTC method force me to reformat my memory, thus requiring me to do the temporary root so I can run titanium backup before doing it?
On a related note, I am not sure just how I would restore my apps actually. I mean, the first thing my phone would ask me to do is to sign into my Gmail account, and when I do that, it will automatically attempt to re-download all of my apps wouldn't it? (And fail spectacularly since I don't have enough space, nearly all of my apps are on my SD card and my internal memory is still full, lousy preinstalled bloatware that you cannot remove...)

Like I said, I just want a rooted stock rom for now, not a custom rom.
Cyber Akuma (is that a reference to "D.Gray.Man?)
Shameless self promoting here but, for some background info have a look at:
[Guide]My Hboot 1.5x HTC Unlock/recovery/rom/kernel flashing notes
Evo3d(CDMA)HBoot/S-off Differences & Rooting Background Info
I've been using MeanRom ICS since it came out. Very solid, very similar to stock, smooth, reliable, fast, but all the extras. S-Off is strongly recommended b/c HTC Unlocked (S-on) users are hit or miss on being able to install ICS Roms. If you are still on Hboot 1.50 you can get s-off by downgrading Hboot to 1.40 or the Jbear wire Trick. If you take the official ICS update Jbear is your only option at the moment.
You may be able to use EsFileExplorer to back up your user apps w/o rooting, but an option to consider is to HTC Unlock, install a recovery, flash SuperUser and have a full rooted stock (S-On) phone that you can backup with Ti Backup or the custom recovery (don't think you will lose anything in the process).
With HTC Unlock, you wont be able to update to ICS while rooted, you'd have to relock and flash the full RUU (erasing the phone) and unlock/root again.
Upgrading to ICS, you should be able to restore your user apps, but system settings/google accounts (especially GB backups) etc will cause issues so you will most likely need to just bite the bullet and plan on re-entering things the first time through. FYI, Virus's update thread only works for S-off users.
Wait, if I do S-OFF and then use an official rom, would I be stuck with S-ON again?

Once s-Off, always s-Off. (unless u send the command via fastboot)
S-Off trumps unlocked bootloader (htc unlocked)
Running a full stock Ruu will not reset to S-on

I want a fresh install of official ICS because my current custom ROM has bugs, will this RUU erase my current ROM and Clean install the ICS?
It will erase everything on the device except SD card, restore bootloader to locked state, format all partitions, and install offical ICS. It'll return your phone to factory condition, that's what the purpose of RUU is. Just connect your phone to your computer, run the RUU and let it do its thing. Suppose your custom ROM doesn't boot, then press and hold power+volume down, the phone will boot into bootloader and show 'FASTBOOT USB'. Now connect it to the computer and run the RUU, it'll work.
Note: You can only upgrade via RUU, not downgrade.

thanks buddy and please help me lil further,i have 2.00.2002 hboot and S-ON, so am i still able to install the official ICS or I have to do the S-OFF first??
No problem. S-OFF is only required for flashing custom recoveries and subsequently flashing ROMs. The state of the bootloader i.e. S-ON or S-OFF doesn't matter if you're running an RUU. It will restore the bootloader to stock S-ON state. Since ICS is the last RUU for Desire S, you can't have a hboot version that higher than the one in the RUU. So whatever hboot you have, just run the RUU and you'll be back to stock.
Thanx alot

Backup/Restore App Recommendations?
From the posts in this thread I gather all data will probably be lost.
Are there any recommendations for a backup/restore app that:
1. Works with both GB & ICS seamlessly (would hate to backup and not be able to restore)
2. Works for Contacts/SMS and app settings as well.

Yes it will. It'll restore the stock recovery. You'll have to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery again if you want.

It's recommended not to restore application data between phones/ROMs. It can cause a lot of force closes, incompatibilities and errors. Also, you need to be rooted to restore data. You should always do a clean install when you get a new phone, which just involves adding your Google account, letting the phone restore contacts, apps, system settings etc automatically, and then reconfiguring all your apps. It doesn't take too long to do that if you do it quickly.
For SMS, use 'SMS Backup & Restore. Saving your contacts as Google contacts is the easiest and best way to restore contacts. That said, try Titanium Backup or the new and much easier to use 'Carbon - App Sync and Backup' if you want to backup and restore apps + app data.
Note: Restoring apps and app data requires root, so if you're unrooted, you must install apps from Play Store and set them up. You should do this anyway if you want to avoid all possibility of errors.

hi i need help

Hi, everyone. I am sure someone is going to shaking their heads at my idiocy after reading this post but I hope someone can save me. So I went to all that trouble to update my phone to ICS from Gingerbread and retain S-off and rooted. After playing with it a little, I decided I like my previous state better. Before I updated my phone, I backed up my phone using the clockworkmod recovery that was installed using revolutionary's tool. That was also the recovery that I flashed after I updated to ICS. So I figure all I have to do was restore the backup. I boot into recovery and all I did was select "backup\recovery" and then the date that I did the backup. The restore finished and I rebooted my system. Everything should be fine now, right? Wrong! As the phone bootup, it would read HTC then Sprint before rebooting again and again. I never reach the lockscreen. Right now I can still reach recovery through the bootloader but that is it.
So how can I recover? Was I supposed to wipe something before restoring? If so, which options am i supposed to use (wipe all data?) because specific details will prevent me from making another bonehead move. If not, what do I do?
Problem is, I got impatient to downgrade from ICS and never bothered to backup after the update to ICS. Just a reminder to all that "backup, backup and backup). So I am stucked right now and need help. HELPPPPPPP......

I can see from my bootloader that it is still HBoot 1.58 instead of HBoot 1.4 before the ICS update. Would flashing the boot.img from the clockworkmod backup work?

You need to downgrade your bootloader to something lower than 1.58 if you want to run ROM's based on GB or AOSP. You can go back to 1.4 if you want, or the Jbear GB (1.50.5050) version. You should leave the rest of your firmware at the ICS level.
The bootloaders can be found in this post. Download the one you want, put it in the root of your SD card, rename it to PG86IMG.zip and flash it from the current bootloader. You should then be able to boot your CWM backup, and don't forget to delete the PG86IMG.zip file from the root of your SD card after you flash it.

Thanks, ramjet. My phone is back to the state that it was in before my ICS update. Sorry for all the work that you put in to help me upgrade in the first place. Since I restore from my GB backup, all I did was flash the bootloader and everything went to normal. If somewhere done the line, I decided to update to ICS again, I know all the steps that need to be done (thanks to you and all the users who provided the various files). Thanks again. I love this community!

Well the rest of firmware (other than the hboot) is now updated to the Sprint ICS 2.89.651.2 level, so you should be able to run the ICS ROM's that don't require the 1.58 bootloader and there are quite a few of those. So it wasn't a waste of time and effort.
