One of my favorite games, I know it has been ported to some low power operating systems (such as a TI calculator), so how hard would it be to make it android native? Maybe we can emulate it through one of the operating systems its ported to? Thoughts anyone?

Feels good man
I was wondering this stuff myself. I've got a Rhodium I was thinking of booting Rhobuntu on just so I could carry Cave Story with me everywhere. I was also looking into GP2X emulators for Android in case that would let me play Cave Story on my Rhodium via XAndroid, but a native Android app would be ideal. Bounty? I'd pitch in for a port.
The source for Cave Story was taken down when it was announced that there was a version being made for WiiWare.
I am disappoint.
Guess I'll have to jam some Linux onto a phone then.

I was all excited for a second, thinking there was work going on for a PPC or Android port. I'm confused, as there are already Windows and Linux ports available here:
http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php
EDIT: OK, I get it - open source! It took me this long because I'm a big dummy.
I know this thread is a tad old but actually, i am trying to port cave story to android. It will be open source when it is released as required by gpl (anyone wanting the source now can pm me). I have it loading into "safe mode" so far as the data directories still have to be defined manually as far as i know. Another bug i found is that it will not even load up in landscape mode at the moment. Its a problem with SDL_blit_N.c according to my crash reports. Attached is a screenshot of what i have working so far. As this is open source, any help with this project will be appreciated. Again, just PM me for the source.

I did some googling around, it seems like http://www.petitiononline.com/ and http://www.change.org/ are both among the more popular sites, though I've never used any of them.
Xperia64 made a version of Cave Story that nearly loads on my NookColor, so if we can get a more portable port working.

Wow, it looks great on my Droid 3! I don't think I'm getting any sound though, and trying to remap keys in the menu or pressing any hard keys other than arrows FCs the app. Too bad, as it looks like my phone is more than capable of handling a fully working version. I've even got hard keys, just not the right ones. It's painful to be so close but still so far from playing Cave Story on my phone. Thanks for keeping us up to date on stuff like this.
EDIT: sound works great! I forgot there's no sound in the opening scene, I had to let the start menu load first. No stutter or anything, if my keyboard worked in-game I'd be set.
SECOND EDIT: I was able to start a game and assign keys! The app crashes when I press most buttons, but it recognizes my arrow keys and the ok, shift, alt, voice, search, and at keys, so I'm all set. Won't let me remap them though, and now that I'm playing it does seem to be running at about half speed. Not that there's any lag, everything seems to just move more slowly, though the music plays full speed.

Nintendo exclusivity clause has the original developer by the balls, similar to Notch being locked into xBox Live Arcade and having to stop work on pocket edition of minecraft. What we have is the game patches and an engine cobbled together out of older source. I'll try and get some responses from the people who got the Raspberry Pink version working, and see what can be done.

This is great! There's a sound effect fix, and the latest version fixes button assignments and has the game running full speed, though the window has shrunk by half. I'm registering there tomorrow so I can post updates. I can't believe I'm playing Cave Story on my phone!

Hi guys,
I think I have been an xda user long enough..so I though, why dont I try my hand in developing and be more of a giver than a taker in this great community.
Problem is, I dont know where to start. So if you dev guys could give me an effective learning path(study this first, then this, then this)..I would be most greatful!
Im not a developer by training(an accountant, of all things!!), however, I did get into IT audit so I know a little bit about the different flavors of unix..and I love coding(we use some scripting software in the trade, i know i know, its different) and i am never happier than trying to figure out how to make things work using code..
I know some of you may laugh at me, but I really am interested in this.
Thanks!
There's a great site here with lots of useful info
If your endgame is to develop for Android it might be best for you to jump in the deep end and start learning Java immediately. Don't worry about learning it by developing Android applications, just focus on developing on PC and you will have a much easier time. Once you've picked up the basics of Object Orientated programming then it's time to take a look at the Android APIs and go through some tutorials so you can see how the apps come together.
At the end of the day it's going to be a big job for you because you have very little experience. Unfortunately theres no real easy way out so you just have to put in the hours.
Yep!! Sleepless nights! Just like a real dev..hehehe... I do know some languages like vb..python..javascript..but that was just me muckin around..nothin serious also..already had the netbeans ide setup...and got my java hello world cherry popped..hahaha..so lame

Yes..that is my endgame..but i was hoping you guys could point me to some android specific stuff..like how kernerls work..etc..basically i want to know the environment first...using google doesnt really yield in depth stuff
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Android is basically Linux with a custom UI.
If you want to know how kernels work (and you really shouldn't(!) if your goal is to make apps, as that's REALLY in-depth lowlevel stuff) just check out how Linux works - there's a million million articles on the net about the internals of Linux.
Android specific app development stuff, incl. tutorials and samples are here:
http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html
Maybe you just wanna setup the SDK and try to get the "Hello World" working, continue from there.
SDK: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
So I came into this with previous programing knowledge, but not knowing java. I've read a book on java, then the programing android book.
So from those of you that actually write apps for the android platform, what do you think is the next step? Just get to it already? Start using eclipse and its built in tools to get started and learn by doing and googling as I go along?
Is that the way most of you have got your start? Any other books I should pick up?
Thanks

Moving to Q&A
I am getting started too, am beginner / intermediate java programmer with little experience. The android site has some nice resources.
Developer.android.com ... Resources tab: look at the tutorials. The Hello World is a nice intro. You will install the Android SDK, eclipse, write a simple app, and seeit in action using the emulator. I have done Hello World and Hello Views.
I'd also appreciate any advice / guidance from more experienced droid devs!
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
I've done that stuff so far. I've also played with the layout manager to.o. I th.ink I might start out making a sound board app. That seems pretty simple to do.
I'm just looking for some advice as the best way to precede
You're on the right way. The next step as a developer is just to develop software. Thats it.
You can look at some books and resources on the Internet to learn basics.
But I think the best thing to do is to imagine a mini-app (very simple, for example a calculator), and try to make it from scratch.
You'll learn how to search information and this will be less boring.
You can also create new projects from samples of the SDK, they are quite interesting.
Write code! Seriously. Screw the books (or you can waste money like me). I am sure that if you start building something like I have coming from a similar background, you will know what books to pick up when its time.
If you are a coder, just make up a project and learn Android in the trenches by figuring it all out as you go. That said, it would be invaluable to read up on the platform itself (the Android dev site is great) as programming for it is a bit different than what a lot of us are use to.
It's fun after you figure out the build environment on your platform. Also, if you are like me you live and die by text editors. That said, I have learned to finally embrace both Eclipse and Java thanks to Android.
EDIT:
I am now getting a lot of mileage out of Creating Android Applications by Chris Haseman. This is only after wasting money on books I wont read or that teach me to do things the wrong way. I was only able to make an informed decision after hacking together my first serious app. This book is packed with nuggets of insight from a and immediately answers questions I have from my experience with the ocassionally sparse documentation. I would highly recommend this book and because of it my future code is going to be very solid without the "did I do the right" feeling. <-- typed on g2x in Browser
Your right, I think I have enough background to dive in. I was playing around and created an app that plays mp3's when you click on buttons, didn't take long at all. Next thing I want to do is create a splash screen, and I took a quick look to see how to create buttons that are a picture and text, similar to the buttons in the google api sample.
Having fun with it so far.

So, as the title suggests I know absolutely nothing about coding, basically, and I was wanting to either learn some basic stuff/ have someone make a few(or one combined) apks.
I was wanting to create a few apps that are just basic commands that would do a few things I'd like. Yes, I'm aware that these exist on the marketplace, but many of them are full of stuff that I don't care about/ don"t want and just needlessly take up space with flashy backgrounds and stuff.
1) I want a simple one click on, one click off button to turn on the led flashlight for my phone, a widgetesque kind of thing
2) I want a simple programmable stop watch countdown timer(I imagine this one would be a lot more labor intensive so I'm really not expecting anything for this one, but if someone has made their own that's really simple and basic I might like it)
I don't know much about coding but from what I've read its a simple code to turn the flash on and off, also, I don't even need the app to open up a new window or anything, it could just be a little icon you push to turn on the flash light and push again to turn it off.
I appreciate comments, even if they're just to say something like, "Are you dumb, this stuff is way over your head" or "Learn it yourself noob"

If you meant "why are you already RC?": that's because of my project. But you could be RC after 4 weeks development too, trust me!

To give a little background info: I'm complete noob as far as android is concerned and I just bought moto e to get me started with android world.
I don't know about others but I certainly feel overwhelmed by shear magnitude of this world and feel little lost >.>
So, put it in one line, I wold like to get help from experts and maybe other people who also bought this phone or something similar to make my life little easier as going all gung ho in app store doesn't seem like a good approach to me, especially with low bandwidth net I've.
As I mentioned, this is my first Android phone and I would like to know about the ''free'' apps which I should install for following things.
Protection from virus/spyware/theft?
File browser if it can extend the capacity of default browsing system.
Web browser which performs well on low bandwidth but is also decent.
Social networking apps (I've already installed Whatsapp as it was known to even gadget challenged person like me)
Ebook and PDF file reader.
Caller ID and call as well as voice recorder.
Those reviewers were not kidding when they said camera sucked on this phone, so if there any app to make it better/more useful?
App for sketching and drawing.
App for navigation (if there is need)
Small time games like racing and pool/snooker etc. I'm not really a game seaway so things on youtube looked too much for me .-.
Any other useful recommendations are welcome as well.
PS:
I did look for some other thread like this but I didn't find one so forgive me if this doesn't really live up to the forum standards, and feel free to delete/move it, if it doesn't. I apologize in advance.
Cheers!

Sorry about the section thingy, I saw the ''theme and app'' thing on the section header(?) so thought this would be the right place to go.
About the playstore, I'm browsing it, but its kind of difficult to separate whats useful from what not (being a newbie and all plus slow net kind of makes it difficult to try out everything, sorry if that sounds like an excuse). I guess, I was just looking for people who already use these and suggest the best.
I'm browsing the thread you linked so thank you for that.

Actually, anything that has human factor involved is a security risk, Linux or not. While Android OS itself might be very well secured, what you install on it makes world of difference (hence my reluctance), depending on sources. It is true that I'm noob to android gadgets, I'm very well familiar with Linux as that is what I use more than 90% of the time. On the Linux forum I'm frequent at, this topic usually causes ton of debate and after few good points it end with exactly what you said, so I wont fan that fire.lol Just wanted to know if there is one. And by the way, Virus=/=malware, virus is just one of the many forms of Malware. And even Linux is not ''that'' secure/immune from latter, its just less of a riped fruit to pluck, something contrary to its child; Android and hence the question.
When I said making cam better/more useful, it was more aimed at making its stock camera UI/app (w/e you may call it) a little more useful by adding more quality/functions or simply make came more easier to use with different UI, this has no bearings on camera hardware in question. I do apologize for wording this wrong in initial post though.
I'll install all your other suggestions, thank you very much for your patience. I appreciate it!

The only way you can be affected by a malware is if you install an infected/malicious app. If you stick with Play Store, the chances for that are minimal. Do not download apps from anywhere else and let Google verify it for you. Still if you're concerned there are plenty of antivirus apps on Play Store, use search button.
Also, try and read the description of an app before you install, see if it has the features you need. The ratings and reviews also help. Thats how learned it when I bought my first Android.
As for the camera UI, trust me, this is one of the best camera apps amongst stock ones. Its clean, simple and efficient. Still, if you wish to check some more, there are plenty on play store. You can try those. Camera 360, Perfectly Clear, for example. They will change the UI and have some cool after effects to apply.

File Browser> ES File Explorer/Astro File Manager
Web Browser on low b/w> Opera Mini/UCBrowser

My two cents worth:-
File browser: I use CyanogenMod File Manager. Root Explorer(Paid), ES File Explorer, etc are decent options.
Web browser: Dolphin Browser-It supports flash. If you want to conserve data you might look into Opera Mini
Ebook and PDF file reader: Moon Plus Reader-IMHO this is the best app for this purpose. Free and Paid options are available
Communication: Viber is a good option. I prefer it over LINE,WE chat, etc
Some other apps I think you should have:-
For optimizing RAM usage/hibernating apps: Greenify
Ad-blocking: AdblockPlus or Adaway(needs root). For more info, look here.
Launcher: Nova Launcher
Media Player: MX Player-a must have!
App Backup:TitaniumBackup(needs root) or Helium
Thank you all! I've taken most of the suggestions and it has indeed made my life easier :3
