Hi,
I'm still kinda new to android and settling in with it, but just today I went over 100% of my data plan. I found the message a bit odd as I had a message not too long ago (about 6 hrs ago) saying I was at 65%. I didn't use the data much in the 6 hr time period, I only used the facebook app a few times and I think thats all that I used that would normally use the data plan. or could it be the widgets? I only had beautiful weather widget and super clock on as well as the facebook and youtube widgets. would having performance mode on be the reason as to why I jumped from 65% to 100%?
What data plan do you have?

I had something similar happen with my wife's Atrix. Both mine and hers have the 2gb plan. We use wifi at home and work so we don't push all that much data through at&t.
We went out for dinner last week, away from wifi for about an hour. Not long after we got home, a notification arrived saying her phone had hit 2.7gb!! I had looked at util a few days prior an both were at 20-30mb. The util report on their website said all 2.7gb had been used that day, starting at the time we went out. I used my phone as much as she did, and mine showed a more reasonable 4mb for the day.
To hit that, her phone would have had to be downloading at a sustained 6mbps the whole time we were off wifi. Best speed I have seen through at&t in my area is 2.5mbps.
Customer service opened an investigation, but it will take til the 21st. In the meantime, the overage still shows on my account.

I have the 200 mb data plan (lame right? ) but last I checked on my data usage was the previous night, and I only used up less than 100 mb, and this weekend only I medium usage of navigation for android and did some internet surfing and used youtube outside of the house and without wifi. But today I had barely touched my phone except maybe 2-4 times and at 8 am I found that I used up nearly 30k kb and 77k kb at 10 am
It would be interesting if you could use wifi and put it through a proxy on your home network to see. If it's something in the radio it may not show
Since you're on Wifi at home have you checked your home data usage?
do you guys have any app to monitor your data usage? 3G watchdog can tell you exactly how much data each app is using, maybe something is syncing in the background...but 2gb should be plenty if you are not downloading or streaming videos.
Didn't have a data monitor running before but you bet I have both phones monitored now!
It has to be a monitoring error. All she was doing at the time was web browsing...no video, app installing, etc.

I will start from the beginning ...so I apologize in advance for the lengthy post.
I started with T-Mobile in 2007 when I purchased the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 from LetsTalk.com. I had the "Minutes & Mail" plan which included unlimited data, texting, etc. I kept my Pearl through April of 2010, when I then purchased this Nexus One from a third party. Needless to say my Blackberry plan transferred over to my N1. I eventually rooted it of course, and have been running mainly CM nightlies ever since. I have been completely 150% satisfied with this phone and honestly have never had any desire to get anything else. Since April 2010 when I bought it, this phone has served as the internet source for my laptop with its WiFi hotspot, and has at times seemed faster than some broadband internet connections. It's been extremely reliable and always very fast. Now, when I use the phone's browser, I will get random "internal errors" saying that this page isn't compatible with this user agent, when I have never gotten this error before.
Recently, as in about two days ago, I entered into T-Mobile's "Best. Plan. Ever." plan, maybe more commonly known as the Unlimited family plan, with my girlfriend, who currently still has a Blackberry 8100, and is waiting to upgrade to the HTC Sensation. This plan is $99.98 per month for "unlimited" data, text and minutes, with a 2gb data cap. Ok. I initially thought the data cap was 5gb, but whatever... The minute we switched to this plan, I noticed massive changes to my N1. Data transfer speeds ranged from terrible (41 KB/s) to great (250 KB/s), with them being terrible more often than not. My phone had been acting very buggy anyway, so I decided to do a full wipe of everything and reinstall the latest stable CM release, the 7.1.0 RC. I then find out, after the install, that my wireless tether will NOT work, I tried rebooting both my phone and PC numerous times and tried different SSIDs as well as no encryption whatsoever. It still would not connect..."no internet access" according to Windows 7.
I've done this same thing countless times prior to getting this new plan, and it will not let me tether wirelessly with the new plan. I have not looked into whether or not my PC is set up for ad hoc networks, because I even tried with the security disabled.
It seems to me that most of my device's functionality has been stripped after entering into this new family plan. Nowhere does T-Mobile say (that I can see) that you have to sign up for a separate tether service, and random device errors that I seemingly have no control over, do not sit well with me. I have an Android for a reason, because I refuse to be controlled by Apple and pushed around by Microsoft. Even the app "AdAway" doesn't work anymore to block ads. Are there explanations for what is happening?
I would appreciate any help, advice, whatever. Thanks.

Guys - I've just come from an HTC Sensation on JBMIUI to a Lumia 620. There is no 620 forum yet but the same question applies AFAIK to all WP8 phones and this is currently the most active WP8 forum - so apologies - I hope this sparks some useful discussion.
I'm on a Vodafone UK work contract with a meager 500MB data allowance each month. Having watched the Jimmy McGee video on the front page of XDA about why he has given up on WP8 (one key reason was his data use trebled from his Android handset), I'm now seriously worried about my own data use.
Vodafone UK don't support Data Sense and won't cap my data use through their systems (as Tesco's can do with one click in their web based account manager - Yea! Go little guys!). Voda do however like to royally stick it to you for exceeding your allowance. One month when they had accidentally removed my data bolt-on, I got a bill for over £400 for just under 700Meg of data - no warnings of approaching or exceeding my limit or of running up a bill 20 times my normal monthly amount - the bastar... er... not nice people!
Thankfully they eventually backed down and even apologised for that little mistake and I am a low enough data user to never have exceeded my data allowance on any other occasion.
BUT - accidentally running up this sort of bill would count as a disciplinary matter with my employer - so - is there any other way anyone has found to accurately monitor / track data usage? If not I'm going to have to switch off data and only turn it on when I absolutely need to - a major pain in the ass and one which kinda defeats the purpose of having a smartphone in the first place
Any suggestions gratefully received, equally, comments from longer term Lumia users who have managed to run their phone without sky-high data use would be good to hear!

I'm in the same boat on GiffGaff PAYG.. I ate through £10/data in one day. The trouble is WP8 still has an active data connection even when wireless is turned on. I am not sure if it's just the small period when wireless kicks in from wake, or if it's on all the time, but either way there is unnecessary data usage and no way to disable account sync like you would on Android.. (bar disabling data completely). In my opinion this is a huge bug...
Battery saving seems to disable data sync well, however it also disables location services.

When the phone is asleep, Wifi is also asleep unless a background app specifically calls for it. Any data access the phone needs while it is asleep is done over the data connection. There fore your phone will always use data when it is asleep, even if you are in a wifi connected area that the phone is setup for. It does this to conserve the battery as seeking a wifi connection all the time uses more battery that the phones radio does.

Which is ridiculous imo, neither android nor apple have this behaviour (I have both). Presumably leaving wireless on would be a workaround.

Depends on the Android. My HTC Inspire was setup so it would use data while asleep and wifi was only active when it was awake. This maybe a default setting that AT&T phones have. I say this becuase my Desire was also an AT&T phone although I was running energy ROM on it but that ROM worked the way I just described as well.
This is only an issue for those who have very limited data packages and IMO should not be using a smart phone if that is the case in the first place. I had a 2GB package and it was close to being over used each month. So when I got my 920 I went to a 3GB package which is just right for my use. If I go over they charge me 10 bucks for each GB of overage.
If you are unable to get a similar plan in your area then it seems to me the provider is trying to put a cap on smart phone users and that would mean it may not be a good idea to have a smart phone on that provider unless you have money to spare. Just my opinion of course.

I had a HTC Desire before the Galaxy Nexus, and I do remember it turning off wireless when asleep, however it never reverted to a data connection. I can't remember how the GN was, always on I think. I've used all three phones on the same contract and the WP8 is the only one that has made a data connection whilst asleep (I would have seen it before in the last three years of use, and its only happened since using this phone).
Agreed that most people have a plan. On Giffgaff in the UK you can buy a plan for a month (a goodybag), however if you use virtually no data (because you are always within the vicinity of wireless) its even cheaper to stay PAYG. Ordinarily I can make £10 last a couple of months for calls and texts (free intra network). But I burned £10 on data in one day last week, and I never even touched the phone!
This is the article I was referring to when I said I thought it was a 'bug':
http://wmpoweruser.com/no-universal-data-counter-feature-in-wp8-as-data-sense-is-carrier-dependent/
Adding insult to injury, Windows Phone 8 still hasn’t solved some of the painful problems of Windows Phone 7: it still leaves mobile data on even when connected to WiFi, and turns WiFi off when the screen is locked, which together can lead to completely unnecessary usage of mobile data. Arguably, solving these two trivial problems would be much more useful to the majority of Windows Phone users than introducing carrier-exclusive data-saving features.

Hasn't this issue been partly rectified with the Portico update? They added a setting to keep WiFi on behind the lock screen. Also If you do not want to use data and sync your accounts manually you can turn on battery saver, as that stops most if not all background syncing and makes you do it manually to save battery, in this case it is more about saving data.
I would highly recommend turning on battery saver and seeing if this reduces your data usage. However just remember you will have to manually sync all your accounts to get updates.

I know this question is very subjective to each individual, but how much data do you guys use on a monthly basis? It would be awesome if you included the average number of things you do each month with your phone (internet time, emails, videos, etc.) I am unsure whether or not to go with a Verizon plan on the GS4 because I have no idea how much data I will use (yes, I have looked at usage calculators), but your averages would be greatly appreciated!

I fluctuate between 1.5 gb and 8 or 9GB depending on how often I use my Vulkano box to placeshift my TV. Many things use little data, but streaming video forget about it. It's a data hog and I'm not giving up my unlimited until forced to. It's a BS money making farce. Case in point.......Last week had to take my wife to the ER at 1 am. Kids had to be with us (young). To keep them entertained and not a total mess I tethered my tablet so they would watch the Disney channel. Vulkano is like a sling box......allows you to watch your TV on your device. In the time we were there while my wife was in the ER (she's fine btw) I used almost 2gb of data with them watching TV on the tablet.
The argument against unlimited is that there not enough "bandwidth" to go around, so they limit you to keep the network unclogged. 90% of my data comes at non peak times like this. There is no bandwidth shortage when I'm using it, so to charge me extra for data is nothing more than profiteering.
so, how much data? 2gb is standard. Do you have access to a lot of wifi, or will you be stuck on the network most of the time? That can HIGHLY influence your data usage. If wifi most of the time, you can go as low as 1. I do believe with the shared data, they update you before you go over so you can bump up the plan and not pay outrageous overages fees, and just pay for the extra data for that month.
I use between 2-4gbs a month depending on how much I'm working (work wifi sucks)
I used to have Unlimited data and ditched it to save over $120. I was using a total of 4 devices and paying over $300.00. I'm now down to 3 devices and paying around $200.00. I have the 6GB plan and we average maybe 2GB if that. I'm always using WiFi. All the hospitals I go to have WiFi and I go to many a month. Other public places have WiFi as well.
I use an average of 1 or 2gb a month. I probaly use about 1&half hours on internet/social networking apps and about 1 hour of watching youtube. But I am on wifi most of the time.

If all the public wifi was reliable I would be more apt to let go of my unlimited (except on a 4 phone plane with only 2 smartphones I'd pay $10 MORE for a limited plan), but in the hospital story above, there was an xfinity wifi available, and I am a customer so I can use it free, but they all limit your bandwidth, and the video stream wouldn't work.
I used to take wifi over the network when I could just to save battery life on my rezound, but the S4 lasts me a full day no problem, and if it needs a slight charge in the evening, it charges so darn quick, so I take whatever data is giving me the fastest speeds
Data Usage is never over 4 gb
I feel your concern for Data usage averages and I just wanted to tell you what I wish someone would have told me before I switched to Sprint from AT&T. Most companies that offer unlimited Data plans aren't entirely unlimited anyway. For example Sprint only allows 300 mb roaming Data. The unlimited Data connection that sprint provides in my area (Georgia) is totally garbage. Verizon 3G was honestly much faster than Sprint's 4G LTE. The point I'm trying to make is: If you have unlimited but it takes the entire month to load a YouTube video (not true of course but Sprint is EXTREMELY slow) why even bother? Just connect Wi-Fi! Sprint offers unlimited Data to reel in customers but never talk about the real speed compared with other providers. I have my own theory: the people who have unlimited Data must abuse the heck out of it. There are people who average close to 20-30 gb a month on Sprint. I honestly applaud Verizon for not allowing people to upgrade and get a discount without changing their plan. Makes my connection faster for when I need it.

No it doesn't, and that's what the carriers want you to believe. True there is only so much bandwidth to go around, but when I'm using 2 gb between 12-2am while your asleep......it doesn't do anything to your connection, just costs me more without unlimited. If they were honest and upfront, they'd go to peak time limits like they used to do with minutes. And if I'm at a football game in the city with 60,000 fans in the stands, limit or unlimited the phone is still unusable because of all the people connecting to the same tower. Bandwidth is just a pipeline, whether it's a gush or a trickle, the data coming through is the same. It's not a commodity that they charge for.
I use roughly 60 gigs of data per month. I tether everyday while I'm at work. I stream plenty of movies and music. I'm on the unlimited plan.

I'll assume you're asking because you need to choose a data plan. Thus, you may need to disregard the folks who are running 10-250GB/month on their unlimited plans, because you can be sure that most would not be running those levels without 'unlimited' plans.
You also need to discount a bit for the fact that this board is chock full of enthusiasts, and probably not representative of the general population.
Personally, I had the same question when I switched from Sprint. On Sprint, I was using under 1GB/month, but not b/c I'm a low-user, it was b/c Sprint's data service s*cked so bad that I could (or would) never use it. So I had no real frame of reference when I switched to Verizon.
I chose the 2GB plan, and have found that, provided I use wi-fi where possible (home, work), I can live within the confines of that plan* (more on that in a bit).
As a user, I do maybe 30-40 minutes of web surfing a day, check FB maybe 2 or 3 times, occasionally watch a youtube video, push several email accounts multiple times per day, use Google Maps regularly (mostly weekends), download a podcast or two, listen to Pandora (10-15 mins/day), probably spend another 15-30 mins in misc. data consuming apps, and have a variety of apps running that pull background data such as weather apps, calendar sync, twitter, etc.
* So, 'living within the confines' of the 2GB plan requires some level of 'awareness' on my part, which would likely not be necessary with a larger plan. That doesn't mean heavy restrictions, just certain things I make a conscious effort to do only on wi-fi include updating Google Apps, streaming Netflix or HBO, downloading multiple podcast episodes, etc. If I had a child that had to be entertained (as another poster indicated) anytime-anywhere, I could see where the data usage could pile up. IMO, streaming video is probably the biggest consumer.
Of course, your mileage will vary
On a related note, I think it's great that the S4 allows you to track your data usage on the device, and not only tells you your cumulative monthly total, but also totals for any period and exactly which apps are using data.

That's kind of the exact same boat that I am in at the moment. I currently have Sprint, and their data speeds are awful. I consistently end up on roaming in buildings and what not, so I cannot judge the amount of data that I might actually use. So when you mentioned the things you do regularly (web, social media, maps, etc.), are those mainly done via their LTE network? And thank you for this post; it was right on track in regards to my same mindset.
It's not hard to restrain yourself to a certain plan. Like I was saying I had a 10GB plan but switched to the 6GB plan. The only reason I keep the tablet active is because they used my tablet to upgrade my primary phone to the S4. Even though the tablet never leaves my house usually I still don't use a lot of data. I never used a lot of data while on unlimited either. It;s down to personal preference and that is up to you. Everyone can say what they use and you would never have an ideal. You should have made the post say no unlimited plan since you can't get a true feeling with the unlimited's poking in.

All I can say is WOW are you going to be in for a pleasant surprise. The short answer is yes, almost all of my non-wifi usage is via 4G LTE. I live near NYC and work in Philly, and with Sprint, I kept 4G toggled 'off' b/c whenever it was 'on', there'd rarely be a 4G signal available, and when there was, it wasn't very impressive.
With this phone, the first thing I'm asking is, "Where's my 4G toggle?" Truth is, I never needed it, because a) 4G LTE is pervasive by comparison to Sprint and b) it doesn't burn battery on my S4 as it did on my S2. In fact, because of my 'conditioning' on Sprint, I always look to see what signal I'm at whenever I'm about to use data. I'd say (unscientifically), 8 or 9x out of 10 it's 4g LTE...
good luck

Thank you very much! Also, I know you mentioned it in your first reply to some extent, but exactly what all do you have syncing during the day while on LTE, and what do you think a solid estimation is for the amount of data you use in a day?
