[Q] Is it really that easy? - HTC EVO 3D

I am a total noob, with my phone being stock. I have read a few things about rooting my phone but never done it. Having updated my GSM OTA to ICS, I am aware that the new bootloader is a problem. While looking again, I found this guide on youtube http://youtu.be/jt25eiIBJ14, is it really that easy?
When I was reading some of the guides, I was quite scared but seeing it done has eased my fears.

I wouldn't trust any video on youtube. They are out of date and I just generally wouldn't trust them. There are plenty of guides, how-to's, and stickies on here to help you out.

rooting is quite easy. its getting s-off that is the problem. That video guide will get you unlocked bootloader s-on. what you really want is s-off with 1.49 hboot. AOSP based roms require this hboot, you could try your luck with sense based roms on 1.53 hboot.
This guide should get you through all the steps to downgrade and s-off:

[Q] Rooting

Hello XDA,
I am new to the world of unlocked bootloaders. I just traded in my overheating Droid X2 for the Rezound, and I want to know what I need to do in order to root my phone, flash appropriate kernels, and get on the ICS de-Sensed ROM by newtoroot (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481408). Like I said, I've never had a phone with an unlocked bootloader before, and so am used to just flashing ROMs from the System Recovery app. What should I flash? What method of rooting should I use? Links to guides would be much-appreciated.
Thanks,
ramchand917
Did you not see the thread that said [GUIDE] Super-noob guide to unlocking, rooting, and flashing Ziggys kernel that was stickied in the Android Dev section went you went looking for a ROM?
Skip step 4 if you have the OTA update and root from Amon Ra in Recovery. Other than that, have fun and have a blast with this beast of a phone.

Can't find the posts about flashing GB<>HC when S-off'ed and rooted

Back a few months ago there were some posts about why we couldn't flash GB and HC roms even if they are rooted and the device is S-off'ed. I think globatron was part of that, but I don't remember which topics they were and search is being vague on me.
Does anyone remember these topics?
Reason I'm asking is because I'm in the middle of compiling CM7 for the View unofficially (and maybe CM9 later), but I want to be safe with what I am doing.
The device is currently on HC S'off with Revolutionary. Hboot is updated to .5556
bump! I really want to start deving here.

[Q] HTC Noob asking about different options

Hi everyone,
I've rooted and installed custom ROMs and kernels on Samsung phones and variety of Android tablets. This is my first HTC device so I'm a little unsure of my options. I've spent the past week going through many threads using the search but I'm somewhat lost. Can you describe each term and its benefits with one or two lines?
Unlock/lock bootloader? Is this equivalent to installing CWM?
Hboot?
S-on/off?
SuperCID?
fastboot?
And finally, what is 'root' in the context of everything above?
Sorry about the confusion. I've never run into these things while messing around with Samsung phones. ANY help is appreciated. Thanks.

It's ok, I was in your shoes a few months back. Here's an explanation of everything to the best of my understanding.
Bootloader - I would say this is kinda like the equivalent of a BIOS on a computer. You can access the bootloader by holding Volume Down + Power when your phone is off. With a locked bootloader, you can't really do much to your phone except for flashing stock rom images. You'll need an unlocked bootloader to root/flash roms. No, this is not the same thing as CWM recovery.
Hboot - The version and type of your bootloader. For example, there's ENG, SHIP, and JuopunutBear. Latest version is JBear's 1.93.2222 (I think).
S-on/off - This property is associated with your bootloader. Most phones come with s-on to "protect" end-users from messing up their phones. With s-off, you get much more freedom to customize your phone however you like, such as flashing your own splash screen, radio, etc.
SuperCID - after obtaining s-off, you can SuperCID your device to flash any carrier's rom you like. For example, an Amaze on the Telus/Wind network can take advantage of TMobile's ICS leak.
Fastboot - I don't have the best understanding of what this is yet, but it is an option in the bootloader, and there are adb commands that use fastboot. I think it gives you the ability to turn off and on your phone quickly? Someone can correct me on this if I'm wrong.
Root - gives you root access/permissions. For example, you'll need to root your phone if you want to use some apps that requires root (4ext, lucky patcher, root explorer)
@XDA Amaze community - If I'm wrong on anything, please correct me. Also, please add anything that I might have missed.
Thanks for your help!
I have one more question. I am currently on CWM, Android Revolution (latest with ICS leak), and S-on. If I want to undervolt or overclock my CPU, will I need a custom kernel, S-off, or what?
On other phones, I'd just need a custom kernal and rom that support overclock. I'm not sure how HTC phones work regarding this.

[Q] Help

Im Rooted S-ON Hboot 1.5 And I Want To Install An ICS Rom Is There A Good Way For Me To Do This. I Really Need Help.
It would be MUCH easier and you will avoid a lot of problems if you just downgrade your hboot to 1.4 and get s-off.

[Q] Flash Older Rom Before Attempting S-Off?

Hi All,
Been an Android guy since the G1, but that was also the last time I had anything HTC. Picked up a One yesterday and I'm so happy to be back.
Did a bunch of reading before getting the phone. I wanted to make sure I didn't do anything irreversible. Before I received the phone, I'd read that you couldn't get S-Off with 1.27.531.11, as they'd patched the HBOOT (even though it's still 1.44.) So once I got the phone and confirmed it was on 1.27.531.11, I performed my first step:
1. Downgraded from 1.27.531.11 to 1.27.531.8.
Next:
2. Unlocked using htcdev
3. Flashed TWRP as recovery
4. Installed Android Revolution HD 4.0 Google Edition
All went smoothly! Because I had no issues with this, I decided it was worth it to push on and get S-Off and SuperCID. I read Vomer's guide many times over, and was about to get rolling with revone, when I found another guide ([GUIDE] PRE-S-OFF - IMPORTANT INFO - Read Before Going To S-OFF Threads!) which contained the following:
You are on or flash a STOCK Sense 5, Android 4.1 ROM! (NOTE: 4.2 Software may be OK however for your best chances use the oldest you possibly can!!
But as a result of #4, I'm now on a GPE 4.3 Rom. This gave me pause.
So, two (and a half!) questions really:
1. Should I flash back to a 4.1 or 4.2 rom prior to trying to get S-Off through revone? If so, what rom should I use? My best guess, if this is necessary is Team Nocturnal's Stock Rooted 1.27.531.8
2. Is there anything else flashing Android Revolution HD 4.0 might have done that would cause problems when trying to use revone to get S-Off? I still have Hboot 1.44, and I don't *think* flashing that rom would have somehow made this the patched version present in 1.27.531.11, but I just want to be sure of what I'm doing. (That question sounds so noobish! But better safe than sorry, I'm thinking.)
Thanks in advance, guys. Really didn't have a great community around my last phone, and I'm psyched to be back amongst a big group of tinkerers.
And from that same guide:
Are not using a GE ROM, 4.3 Rom or on stock 4.3 software
So it definitely seems like I should flash something older first. Just want to confirm what would be best (and make sure there's nothing else I need to do as well prior to using revone.)
All set. S-Off and SuperCID achieved.
For anyone who finds this thread down the road:
As long as you've downgraded to 1.27.531.8, just make sure you're on a 4.2.2 or earlier rom. Multiple reports of revone not working with 4.3 roms. You're on an older rom after doing the downgrade, so if you don't flash anything after that, you're ready to use revone.
Thank you for the info! I had wondered the same thing!
