Hi Guys
If anyone has recently bought the SGS II and was before using the desire HD, would you kindly give me your feedback on the device as compared to the DHD. I am currently considering the upgrade and would like some feedback.
For me the DHD is a great mobile (speed, sense 2.1, stability, etc) and i am considering the upgrade to get a better GPU and faster performance due to the dual core.
Thanks
i switched from the dhd to the sgs2 and i dont regret it. compared to the sgs2 my dhd was a piece of crap.
build quality - fail
weight - fail
reception - fail
camera - fail
i dont even miss sense 2.1 since i've installed go launcher ex
I have come from the dhd . Was running the revolution Rom and the dhd was good. Thing i notice since i have jumped ship is the speed. Even downloads e.t.c seem a he'll of a lot quicker.
Not a big fan of touch whizz but when you come from sense you can see why. Personally i think its a great phone which is far speedier then the dhd, and that's before custom Roms and kernels

Thanks guys for the feedback
what about overall software stability. Do you feel that the ROM is stable and fast like the HTC ROMs, or do you suffer from occasional hickups or lags.
Software is good no issues.
I also find the battery alot better. Upgrade you will not regret it!

Hey,
I am one such owner; I just received my SGSII yesterday. Let me share my preliminary thoughts.
Before I received it, I was worried about going from a aluminum uni-body construction to plastic, but the gain in slimness (in the hand, it's much more comfortable) and the loss of weight is extremely noticeable; surprising, even. Overall, the SGS II is just more comfortable, and the textured back lessens the plastic feeling. There's still a minor worry of "springiness", when you flick the back, you can feel it spring back just a little, but I'm not too concerned.
In terms of the UI, I hated Sense taking over several things, so I'm quite happy at how comparatively restrained TW is. I use a custom launcher, but the Sense call answering slider was bugging me to no end, as when I pulled the phone out of my pocket it usually rejected the call! This issue is gone, as SGS II has horizontal sliding, just like stock Gingerbread/Froyo. The lock screen is also very good, as it seems impossible to unlock it accidentally, even though it's an omni-directional unlock (something I was worried about).
As for the speed, it's no contest. I wouldn't have imagined such a big leap in performance (as I understand that software is still not optimized for dual-core processors), but the SGS II wipes the floor with the DHD. Web browsing is significantly and noticeably faster, there is no rare stuttering (especially in games, where the DHD would [rarely] stutter or not take screen input for a brief split second), and application installs FLY. I was taken aback by the difference; there's no doubt that this feels like a newer-generation phone. The biggest difference? The Gallery loads ridiculously fast.
The SAMOLED+ screen is ridiculously amazing as well, especially coming from a sub-par DHD LCD. Colors pop, black is truly black, and no more of the annoying Pentile matrix blurriness (I had the N1 prior to DHD). The contrast and color when viewing media is not accurate and overdone, but it just makes it more vibrant and more of a pleasure to watch.
Oh, and Kies Air is amazing as a sync and file-transferring tool; something like this negates the need for connecting to the PC at all.
The speaker is also louder by a significant amount (even compared with DHD after fw upgrade), although not really better quality.
Minor issues: when the device is fully charged, it emits an annoying "beep" and turns the screen on; horrible when you are asleep. Also, the phone dialer is not as good as HTC's implementation, and USB Mass Storage mode is a pain (plugging in the SGS II gives you an MTP connection to Kies by default; you have to first go to "Settings / Wireless and Networks / USB Utilities" and hit the "Connect storage to PC" before you plug in the cable). There's also no widget for Music (huge oversight IMHO). The font size in menus & Samsung applications is also bigger than the DHD... i haven't decided if I like that or not.
Overall, I have a feeling the DHD will slowly gather dust in the corner. I'm very happy with the SGS II, and it's exceeded my expectations to boot.
comprehensive

Is it possible to a a widget to do this for you, kinda like the 3G/Wi-fi/GPS on-off buttons?
I ordered SGS II and still I'm waiting for it )
I had Desire HD before and I really didn't like it !
The weight is too much and if I had a call for more than 10 mins I start to fell pain in my hand because of that weight !
Second I didn't like the HTC crap (Sense) because it modifies everything and it's pain in the back when it comes to calling screen because of the stupidity of making the slider for answering a call up or down because if it's in your pocket 95 % you will reject or answer the call when you try to take it out of your pocket !
And last for the custom roms (Desire HD) is peace of **** with their bootloader everything is not allowed !!
So If you are going to get SGSII just go for it you won't regret it !

On the SGS you can go to Settings > Applications > USB settings, and select "Ask on connection". When you plug in the USB it automatically takes you to a screen to select Kies, Media player, or Mass storage. Is that still on the S2?
Another previous DHD user here. You won't regret moving from it, TouchWiz is poor compared to Sense but I don't use TW.
Most importantly for me the battery lasts much longer than the DHD.
The only thing I miss is Sence, far more polished then TW in every aspect: dialer, usb menu, contacts, sms, photo album widget and of course htc clock. And above all stability, I could run it without restart for weeks.
At every thing else, SGS2 is better: camera, battery, display, touch controller (no wavy lines) and overall speed.
Anyway, I don't regret the switch but if I ware you, I would wait for Sensation. Believe me, RAM difference between those 2 is not an issue and you will be able to play all the existing games (see missing texture compression).
For the Dialer I suggest Go Contacts :
Same functionality as HTC Dialer.

Does not work well, I have just tried it.
Issues: speed, not showing all contacts, dialer does not order by best match, stability.

Wifi - Yes its weaker compared to the Iphone4 or any of the Netbooks I have at home, In a spot here the netbook can still hold and maintain the signal the SGS2 doesnt even see the router to be in range anymore.
GPS issues - I dont use the GPS that much so its a non-issue for me.
Display yellow tint - Biggest downside of this product, its supposed to feature a great screen (not perfect but great) lots of other quality control related issues on the screen.
wake up lag - I think all andriod phones have this wake up lag, but someone correct me on this. The S1 also had this after the 2.2 update.
overheating playing 3D games - I've been with 3 units and my first 2 phones barely heated up when playing games, this 3rd phone runs significantly warmer.
sound quality issues - S2 uses a lower end sound chip so this must be the main culprit.
battery life problems - totally subjective to the usage and expectations, Im getting great battery life my self, nothing extra ordinary.
Dont forget about the pink spot on the camera and video stutter/frame drop issues too
Nothing subjective about weak battery - it's WEAK....
Only + point i can think about is a decent camera. But on mine it broke 2 weeks after purchase.
Korean trash.

My experience:
Wifi weak = Good enough for my use
GPS issues = nope
Display yellow tint = nope
wake up lag = You got to be kidding me
overheating playing 3D games = True it gets pretty warm
sound quality issues = Good enough for my use
battery life problems = Battery life is good
I have 4 friends with the same phone, and they are not experiencing these issues.
Positives:
- It is fast. It laughs at your iPhone 4 and Sensation.
- It has a big beautiful screen but it is still thin and lightweight
- Enough RAM (1 GB)
- Touchwiz 4 is super smooth and it is in my opinion better than Sense
- Very smooth web browser
- Good camera
Overall:
Best phone on the market at the moment.
Well for me it is mainly the Web Browser (Stock only), I don't even turn my PC on for normal browsing anymore. Full Flash support is awesome. Hardware acceleration is great too.
Besides, Video Playback capacity is great too, it can even play 1080P MKV's, and that with subtitles, nice. We shouldn't forget the awesome 4.27" S-AMOLED Plus screen.
Having a Noise Cancellation Mic is very nice too, especially when you are in noisy areas.
What else? Can't remember atm, will edit post if I do remember.
Regards.

overheating playing 3D games = True it gets pretty warm >> dont play games
sound quality issues = Good enough for my use >> Absolutely no complaints but i understand that those that like bangy bangy find bass low .
battery life problems = Battery life is good >>> Sorted good battery life .

The yellow tint was just a manufacturing problem, and if you bought a device now (new) it wouldn't have it.

Ok if its not subjective to usage then anyone who cant reach 6days of battery life has a defective phone since I can get 6days with well over 40% of battery left. This is ofcourse taken from what you said.
See how others would comment about the battery life or screen, they have different feedbacks according to what their usage is.
Ex.
Someone who just uses the phone for call/sms will have insanely awesome battery life but someone who has wifi/bt/gps/HSPDA enabled 24/7 might with regular push and updates and uses this phone as an alternative to a netbook will only get between 6-10hrs of battery life.
Same goes for the people who dont see the yellow tint as an issue because they bought the phone not for its screen but for its phone features or just plainly accept the defects thus causing a low quality product.
Everything is almost subjective to the user.

Not being anal here but Id like for you to prove that with pictures that the new batches dont have yellow tinting, so that those who bought the initial batches that came out can send it so the service center and have it replaced.

Thats the problem, a lot of us assume that the 6 million figure released by sites is 100% accurate and even if it is we dont really know how much the return rates are but if they are indeed pretty low how come a few folks ( regardless of how few this ppl are ) have exchanged the phone more than twice..
Also a lot of people have been getting misinformation from forums claiming these issues to be "normal", with enough returns samsung will surely rectify some of it.
Think about it if samsung will silently introduce a new revised hardware with a significantly higher screen quality control ( including the total elimination of the yellow tinting, darker spots, white blotches and vertical banding ) and a fixed camera w/o frame drops and pink spots, a better GPS antenna configuration.. for sure those who claimed that they dont see the issue suddenly will see the issue if they know about revised hardware. Just saying but its gonna be a fact when this happens, not asking for perfection just asking for better quality =)
Then again the issues we see (aside from quality and manufacturing issues) are pretty much subjective to the user experience.
The positive thing about this phone is that its blazing fast! No other phone can compare but it also has a lot of issues and down sides especially the AOS bug when you have wifi and IM apps running, compared it to a 2.1 / 2.2 or 2.3.5 nexus reference device the N1 and NS outlasts the battery on this phone, heck even the iphone4 outlasts it when the AOS bug kicks in.

+1.
Battery life is proportional to use. Wi-Fi+sync = battery drain. Have been using Juice Defender Ultimate for a few days and it help to solve this as it turns Wi-Fi and sync on only then the screen is on and when it is scheduled to do so (for 15 seconds every 15 minutes in my case) in order to receive e-mails, updates, etc.
About the rest, well, no issues at all! Just perfect.

Now I'm about to post the negatives and positives about this phone. I love this phone despite its negatives though. I just hate how Android isn't really optimized atm (little to no hardware acceleration and no proper multi-core utilization). I bought mine 3 weeks back.
TL;DR
The yellow tint is there (in addition to vertical lines), wi-fi is weak, wake up lag is there sometimes (about 1 sec), it gets warm (I hope this has no effect on the screen, I'd hate it if the heat ruins the screen), battery life seems to get better overtime.
These points might sound weird because I copy pasted the review I wrote to my friends.
Negatives:
1. Browser would sometimes get stuck on white blank page when switching windows (not apps, windows as in tabs), especially heavier webpages. One workaround is to switch orientations (portrait to landscape, then back to portrait).
2. This is true to all Android browsers. You will have problems with websites with scrollable frames. And pop-ups.
3. This is also true to all Android phones. Multitouch and copy paste implementations are not consistent throughout the phone. In Browser, you will find that the copy paste works wonderfully well. In some apps, copy paste isn't even implemented. This is the only area in which I think the S2 loses to iPhone.
4. Eventhough it's light, build quality does not win that of HTC. I dropped it once (more like threw instead of dropped), it has a little damage, nothing visible unless you shine direct light to it, mainly because it's black.
5. The charger you get out of the box is merely 700mAH instead of 1000mAH like those bundled by HTC. It takes roughly 3 hours to charge from 0 to 100% (if you use it while charging it can take you a whole lot longer). This brings us to next point.
6. The phone gets warm, warmer than what would feel comfortable when you use it extensively, especially when charging. This is probably why the charger supplied is less powerful, to avoid overheating. This is one reason I don't have casing.
7. The phone automatically turns down your brightness to 0% when your battery reaches 10%. This apparently has no workaround, unless you flash another ROM.
8. I've heard people saying that, eventhough this comes with Gorilla Glass, the Oleophobic coating makes it prone to scratches. I personally run around without a screen protector, and still no scratches after 2 weeks.
9. The wi-fi chip might be the low-power one. I'm getting the same amount of bars as my HTC Wildfire.
10. I'm not sure if the physical keys will play well with Ice Cream Sandwich. I heard ICS will be more like Honeycomb, meaning the main buttons are placed on-screen.
Positives:
1. 4.3" of Super Amoled Plus goodness. I can never look at my desktop and laptop monitors the same way anymore. Anything with black background looks absolutely stunning.
2. It's so powerful that I experience almost zero lag. Lags can still be felt though when you're running unoptimized apps. Whatsapp is one app in which you can feel the stutters.
3. Browsing is ultra smooth, there simply is no lag, even when browsing image-heavy sites. This is mainly because Hardware Acceleration is enabled in the Browser. And I think Samsung adopted iOS' method, you will see checkerboards sometimes.
4. Again, performance. I run Live wallpaper, listen to music, read manga, altogether without experiencing a single stutter, and I hardly ever use the Task Manager.
5. Apps are getting better. Almost all respectable companies are releasing iOS version of the app together with Android version. I downloaded a few addictive games and they're on par with the iOS version.
6. The Oleophobic coating feels really good on the fingers. Touchscreen also seems to register even the slightest of touch.
7. It is very very light, iPhone4 felt like a brick when holding them together.
8. It comes pre-installed with multiple codecs. I've loaded my phone with a few movies and they all play without a problem. 720p movies are played without any lag.
9. The hardware is pretty much future-proof. I believe it can run anything thrown at it for the next 2 years.
10. Touchwiz 4.0 is pretty good, I can't believe I actually like it.

I can't see any yellow tint or any other issue with my display. I'm currently on XXKG3 stock ROM, but I have used KE1 and KE7 stock before and I haven't noticed any issue either.

The screen temperature varies from device to device. Some have had a yellow tint but it doesn't appear to be the majority. There's a production/design issue that shows as a darkening on the left 1/4 of the display. The majority can't see it unless they take pics of their phones in dark rooms at 10% brightness. Screens with a yellow bias seem to exaggerate it.

And what phone's better? If you look at the Sensation, O2X/G2X, and Atrix forums there's a list of comparable issues. Many people that have issues have an expectation of perfection that's not realistic for a mass-produced electronic device. If you're one of them, and are seeking perfection, don't buy a dual-core phone. The vast majority on this forum are thrilled with their purchase and would recommend the phone to a friend.

Yeah, I agree. The Samsung browser definitely could offer easily a decent desktop view. Messing with user agent doesn't provide a long term fix. For this reason, I have Opera mobile on my phone, which is great for that purpose. Nevertheless, I only use Opera when I want a desktop view, 98% of the time I stick with the Samsung browser, which for mobile view is good in my opinion.

yes, you're right. Anyway, if some of you guys can't trust me, I'll post some pictures latter at night in the dark. Just let me know if you wish any specific brightness, colour background, web page, etc.
By the mean time, I can only say that I've never had such issue with any ROM or kernel I had in my device.
Well, I was using Neo for more than a year - from GB to JB. I tried few ROMs (from STOCK with scripts, tweaks, to CM10 which was the most promising one - because of "native" JB support).
As entry level, this phone was good. But low RAM (only 360MB available) and tiny internal storage (max 420MB free) slow down this device a lot. If you use pretty fast SD to link some apps in order to free-up internal storage, the time passes and still, device becomes running out of memory (40MB RAM and 90MB storage free) even if you install only neccassary apps. And if I add a pretty damn creaking phone housing + peeling off colour of housing & buttons + USB/HDMI covers, so I am really glad I switched.
Naturally, the phone not only sucks (I used it for a quite long time, right:fingers-crossed. It has good camera, as smartphone excellent battery life (2 days while low usage) and since it is quite small device it is not a problem at all to hold it in one hand and operate it by one hand.
Now I switched to another device which is obviously not perfect (Xperia S: poor battery life, unfortunately USB/HDMI covers on stage again, quite big device, sensor-based buttons, creaking chin, RAM is not so big as well).
Please I dont want to dissuade anyone from buying this device or geting rid of it. It is just my opinion and I have had a need to share it with other Neo users (potentional, active or former ones).
And what about you? Have you swithed too? Why?
PS: Hope I will survive here, it is a discussion forum, isnĀ“t it
OP there is a thread in place for this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935016
Thanks
I want a new phone. I was a Z3C user but it died of some power supply issue (became dead and couldn't charge/power on for a period from 1 day up to a week).
But I love the form factor. Small yet powerful.
Still, heard too many problems. So I hope the existing users could suggest the more irritating problem after at least one month of usage.
Hopefully the problem is not a deal breaker for me...

Some apps can't write to external SD? That's not a Z5 compact or even a Sony problem. That's Google's fault actually. Atleast sony allows its system apps and file commander to write to sd card

I understand, that's why I wrote (phone needs root)
Too bad, I thought the Z5 compact has got the best combination of hardware and size for me, only to be crippled by the software...
- slippery chasis - fixed by silicone case
- long camera init
- no series mode for camera
- Very slow opening of camera app
- Fingerprint sensor doesn't function well when you're hands are even only a bit sweaty/wet (very irritating during workouts, when you want to look at the screen every now and then)
Other problems (slow response times, random reboots) seem to have been solved with the latest firmware.
- The back of my phone gets super hot.
- The phone lags, if I'm playing a game & some one tries to call me, the phone locks up.
- It's slippery... But it is sexy.
- Camera is slow to open.
- Album is slow to open.
- I've had the phone for 2 weeks & the head phone jack seems to be broken & not recognising headsets properly.
- Has fast charge capabilities apparently, just doesn't come with a fast charger.
- Supplied head set is junk, it's uncomfortable & doesn't have volume control.
- My 1St experience with the Sony Back Up & Restore software was terrible.
i hate the most that there is no cm for it yet.
Software - phone feels slower than my Nexus 5
Camera - I really miss HDR+ mode, sometimes shots are great sometimes really bad

Too bad, I thought the Z5 compact has got the best combination of hardware and size for me, only to be crippled by the software...

Don't listen to them. I've been used it for 2 weeks and the latest OTA been fixed many stuffs and I don't experience any lag or slow camera now.
The only bugged me thing it gets hot during medium/heavy load but still in acceptable range(not as hot as Z3+) consider it is a SD810, other problems are minimum on this phone. Battery performance is about the same with my Z1c, I think it won't be as good as Z3c but still fine. Camera got very slightly quality improvement(mainly better color and WB, details is just about the same with Z1c/Z3c little better) but the focus performance way better than Z1c/Z3c.
My previous phone is / was a Z1C and I jumped over to a Z3C when they came and sent it back disappointed. It felt cheap, plasticky, lighter than the Z1C I was used to. IMO Sony was going the wrong direction with those rounded hard plastic cover corners.
I got the Z5C and I sumit the opinion that all those trends have been reversed and the Z5C is as good if not better in terms of stability and build quality. The sturdy edge running around the Z5C that tives it the odd boxy look feels reassuringly solid.
What sucks? Hmm. I dearly miss root and Exposed, but then again many things that I absolutely NEEDED root for back then can now be accomplished by different apps that dont need root or have made their way as official features into stock (backup&restore or rather Xperia Transfer instead if TiBackup, being able to hide app icons, turn off bloatware etc). It's readjustment for me, using diff tools instead of one TiBackup procedure. But after a while everything is set up for me and right now there is not one single "killer feature" of being rooted that I have to admit missing daily. So i guess I will wait it out.
Phone slippery? I think the edge is just fine to hold and no worse than other phones.
Camera starting slow? Well, if that is slow, how fast is fast? I can't see how it lags in any way... app comes in an blink of an eye.
The biggest disappointment regarding my phone upgrade... well probably that it is another Z-Series. The supposed leaks (or maybe more fanboy fiction specs) pointed to a killer phone, i really thought Sony would pull the Z-Series or slim it down and go for a revival of the P-Series. Or maybe it is still upcoming in Q1/16. I would trade any Z-Series for the P2 if it lives up to the rumours...
What I hate is the PSN / XPeria Lounge / Sociallife / blabla related bloatcrap. But since basically anything in that category can be disabled in App-Manager I don't lose sleep over it.
Mine is a minor headache and it's Android's fault not Sony's. There should be a palm detection. Phone has small side bezels and the narrow width are awesome for my small hands but when hold firmly one handed and reaching my thumb across the screen, my palm hits the screen sometimes...
- really bad position of the volume button
- too slippery (won't use it without a case)
- using speaker during calls is horrible for the other party even with low volume
- no root without loosing DRM keys (yet)
so far, nothing else to complain about
My complaint is unforgivable. It's that I can't put my phone down because I enjoy it too much ?

I was considering buying the Z5C but after finding out that the fingerprint reader cannot be used by any third-party app at the moment I decided to hold off. Apparently Sony hasn't provided an API for the fingerprint reader so apps like Lastpass can't hook in. As a Samsung GS6 user, this is hard to go back to. Once you get used to using your finger to log into apps and websites it feels archaic to go back to typing, not to mention PITA. Once they upgrade to Marshmallow the problem is likely to go away because hopefully Sony will use the built-in fingerprint reader code which already provides an API that is already utilised/supported by Lastpass etc. Just noting.
So I've had this update for almost more or less than 2 months now, and the speed has improved just a little bit. As we all know, typical samsung software, has some glitches and stutter and all that still occurs, for some reason that I and every users don't know why this still exist. Sometimes I'm watching on Youtube, and the damn video just freezes but you can still hear the audio. But I thought maybe it's just the app so i reset the app by force stopping and clearing the data but the thing still occurs. Camera overtime, has slowed down. I don't know why but this specially occurs on lowlight situations that whenever but not always, i launched my camera, it just lags and stops and gos and it's so annoyingly slow. But most of the time, it is snappy. On the other good side of this story, i like the minimalistic Camera app. It's really just their software. Overall it is indeed snappy, but the consistency is their problem. My storage isn't even full yet, for all we know storages slow down as you're taking it all up. I've scheduled automatic restarts, i think it helped. The fingerprint, ugh i don't even wanna talk about it. I don't know how a oneplus 3 has better fingerprint than samsung's flagship. I mean it's just unreliable, i don't know maybe it's just mine??? I literally had 3 fingers assigned on my one and only right thumb just so that the phone won't have excuses lol. But no, im disappointed. It always has to be two damn tries, thats the least. Bluelight filter is now baked in, which is a very nice feature, atleast for me. Battery, i personally didn't notice any change, but thumbs up to that cos im more than satisfied with it. And as we all know, snapchat camera still sucks not only on this phone but with every android phone. The modes, man are they helpful for those times we really need to save battery. You can customize the resolution of you're desire., well not really but three choices is a lot. 720p,1080p,1440p. Now on the update, I don''t know if you noticed, my resolution is set to 1080p because the mode that is chosen after the update will automatically choose the "optimized" mode which adjusts the resolution and cpu speeds and all that according to the activity you're currenty doing. Which is another good thing. Also, google assistant arrived as well, which great! Interface has some major color and look and design changes. The status bar along with the pull down menu in my opinion has become cleaner and better looking than the previous version. The settings has been better, way way better organized than before. Samsung Pay hasn't yet to come in Canada for some goddamn reason (i know it's not suppose to be here but maybe just maybe someone from samsung reads this ****). I'll leave it here, overall, again, it's faster and snappier, app switches are better almost perfect. But you know, stutters and lags will be there. This is my review for the nougat update on my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7. Thanks for reading!
