I heard it is possible to clone the MAC address on Epic touch so you can use the cellphone with Freedompop wimax. Has anybody tried that on Evo V or Evo 3D? Is it at all possible?
TIA

Any luck with this? Seems to be within the exception to DMCA. Hacking device to allow compatibility with another network.
Provided the Evo3d, V completed the contract or paid the ETF.
Just have to spoof the wimax mac address right? I wonder if it's an allocated range you have to get within or if you need a donor device (perhaps a shattered screen evo design?)???
It pisses me off and is clearly anticompetitive monopolistic anti-american isht that Clear won't activate an out of contract evo 4g or evo 3d. When these were through sprint, they used the CLEAR towers. The Wimax is 100% compatible. Clear doesn't want to compete and now that Sprint owns a controlling interest in them, there's no need to compete. Same with Freedompop - their wimax portion would work just fine with evo 3d and 4g... they are mvno'ing sprint/clearwire wimax. Such bull****. Class action qui tam? Unfair competition, Sherman antitrust, lanham act violations??? Sick and tired of these carrier cartels.

I just need to figure out how to make the wimax mac stick and I think I have found a way
Update: I have not found a way to make the mac stick. All you have to do is dial ##3283# then press edit thne put in your MSL then press wimax then press "Realm" then change it to 'freedompop.com', then go back to NAI and change it to you freedompop device's wimax MAC followed by '@freedompop.com', then presss commit. If it sticks, you have WIMAX on your evo

Hell yeah!!!! Wonder if you could forward this to @Freedompop4G to help them??? they've officially announced sanctioned use of old sprint phones finally (whereas Clear is still being an enabling little *****). But, even where Freedompop claims to offer byod evo3d (evo 4G IS working byod), evo3d keeps showing unsupported on their freedompop.com/byod activate page. Driving me furious. They say "Dev team" is working on it but won't give a time frame. Really CANNOT wait until Chairman Wheeler @fcc starts kicking some ass and asking tough questions of sprint and the other cartels. So if they really are working on getting sprint phones (wimax) to work but they are just having a difficult time on the tech side, perhaps your solution will help them? IMHO
Menu/Commit the answer?

I am running brad560's Sprint Updated version 3 Final custom ROM on a sprint htc EVO with freedompop. I have been able to get the wimax settings to stick in the ##DATA# screen, by pressing the MENU button and choosing "COMMIT". The phone then reboots and the NAI changes stick!
I have not, however, gotten 4g WiMax to work, despite the progress above.
The custom ROM does, however, let me use the EVO as a hotspot on 3g service!

I'm writing this to try and save you guys some steps. This is a combination of things I've pieced together from several other instructions. Necessary files will be attached as best as I can, links will be provided otherwise.
This should give you 3G on verizon. I seem to get it no problem. However, I am not sure that it will be as fast as the 3G on Sprint, and it will definitely prohibit use of Sprint's LTE network, if you're one of the lucky ducks in the six cities starting up LTE soon.
if you bork your phone, I'm not responsible for that. You do this at your own risk.
things you'll need-
HTC diagnostic drivers
CDMA workshop (demo version is fine)
your MSL
a PRL to push to the device
if you're rooted, you can get your MSL by simply using MSL reader. I got mine from sprint when i was activating my phone.
you can get PRLs from this page. I chose OOOO1, because it's a verizon PRL, but your phone doesn't say roaming all the time. you need the .prl file inside of the zips, not the zips themselves.
turn on android debugging in your settings, and allow sideloading (i've read this is necessary, but i already had it on, so i cannot verify that it won't work if it's off)
Download the htc drivers folder below, and unzip to somewhere.
go into diag mode ##DIAG# on your dialer (that's ##3424#)
plug your phone into your computer (windows 7, i haven't done this on the linux side of my machine yet, so i'm not sure how it all works out there).
open up the device manager
(just start typing 'devices' in the search field, it will pop up. or type 'devices.msc' ) don't use the quotes.
you should see the phone, under 'ports' (so i've read) or modems. wherever it pops up, it should be in yellow, because we haven't installed the diagnostic driver yet!
right click on it, where ever you found it in the devices list.
choose to install/update driver. click 'browse my computer'. click 'let me pick from a list of drivers'. click 'have disk'. click 'browse'. navigate to wherever you put those htc diagnostic drivers, and select the one (64 or 32 bit) for you.
it should then be in the device list as a modem (assuming your phone is still in diagnostic mode). right click on it, select properties. figure out which port it is on (the modem tab)
open up cdma workshop. you should only have to doubleclick the executable file (cdma_workshop.exe) to open it up. this is the demo version they give away freely on their website. this is not a cracked fully functional version. but, it does what you need it to.
set the port to the one you just read out of the device manager. hit 'connect' and then 'read'.
click on the security tab. write your MSL in the field under 'SPC/user lock'. in the drop down menu there, select 'HTC method'. click the little box just to the right of your MSL field until it says 'S'. Click on the SPC button there and hit 'send'. Your phone should now be able to be accessed by CDMA workshop.
Go to the 'Other' tab in CDMA workshop. under PRL, leave it at Universal, NAM1 (I also wrote to NAM2 for some reason. I don't know enough about this to say with perfect accuracy what would be 'most appropriate'. just a warning).
click on the 'write' button. it will bring up a box for you to find and choose the PRL of your choice. hit okay. boom. written.
now, from here, i also changed the preferred radio to the 900mHz band cellular.
those instructions can be read here .
basically, that's *#*#4636#*#*, hit phone info, menu, select radio band. i also changed my preferred radio to include all the network types and switch through them automatically.
i've changed my prl, and radio type, and i'm getting 3g on verizons towers, not showing roaming (although i am roaming, it just doesn't say so because of the modified PRL)
there you go kids.
btw, i did have to reboot my computer twice to get the drivers and the phone and cdma workshop all to place nicely together.
hope that helps someone.

Yes they can, you can view the amount of roaming data used online on sprint.com
People have had their contracts terminated for roaming too much, but on the flip-side, there's people out there who have roamed constantly without a warning letter or anything from sprint. YMMV

dont do it
sprint is clamping down on it
i got a warning call once, and they said i did over 900mb while roaming
yes, sprint knows. i don't care. honestly, if they kicked me off, it's fine with me. i move in two weeks to a part of the country that basically only covered by verizon.
Do it a lot if you wanna get out of your Sprint contract without cancellation fee's.

Don't think Sprint charges for roaming, but I do this only because I have to. Work related.. I use the OG EVO 4G EPST.apk so I can change PRL on the fly when I need to Verizon 3G.
I'll have to double check but Sprint does throttle/limit roaming 3G to 300MB. At least that's what happened to me. Couldn't get decent Verizon 3G after I went over last month. After billing cycle I was able to get back good roaming speeds.
If you do this don't abuse it..

Nope. Verizon's LTE network is different than Sprint's. They run on different frequencies.

Will OG EVO 4G EPST.apk work for the EVO 4g lte, if it does would you mind posting a copy?
I followed the instructions you posted and it seems to be working, but I was just wondering how I will know I"m on verizon since the 0001prl file removes the notification and is there an easy way for me to control when I am on sprint or when I'm on verizon?
Thank you very much for all the help, this feature is great if I"m in a bind and need service!
Anyone know if Sprint let's you start another line after getting kicked out? Not that I plan to or anything..

without an EPST.apk that will allow you to manually choose the PRL, you have to use this convoluted method to change to verizon. switching back to sprint only requires you to go into settings>updates>update PRL. it pulls it from the network.

I'm rooted on ice cream sandwhich rom, sense 3.6
Basically my 4g connection is very poor, if and when it does work, its slow. It is probably related to my 4g coverage area, but I don't remember it being this bad. I went from an evo 4g, to an iphone 4, and now to the evo 3d, so I don't remember my previous 4g experience. Besides from coverage, can it be related to the rom I installed (cool ics)? Is there a way to fix or diagnose it?
thanks

what are you talking about? There is no wimax 4g network. the network they call a 4g network isn't even a network. It's not even possible to drive a mile without losing your connection. look at your bars. any bars? Also didn't know your provider would actually support their fake network that they don't claim anymore. yeah. they won't repair any towers. they won't fix any issues with wimax. they won't do anything that helps and supports their customers. They don't care about you. they have never cared about you. Now if you want a 4G network. Go verizon. 50+M down. 12M up.
what do you mean runcool? Isn't wimax the standard used in our phones for ,4g (technology or network)? Is it no longer supported?
nvm. I did a read http://gizmodo.com/5847643/its-official-sprint-is-going-lte
Has wimax been shut down completely ? I still get connected to 4g here and there.
You might find a single tower that has their so called fake 4G network WHICH ISN'T 4G!.... But if it goes down. THEY WILL NOT REPAIR IT BECAUSE SPRINT IS CHEAP AND THE OWNERS OF SPRINT WOULD CARE LESS about you and I. Dishonest company. Refusal. I can see many issues with their LTE 4G network as well. So tell me.... Verizon can get 50M down 12M up..... why is that? why can't sprint do ANYTHING TO IMPROVE THEIR NETWORK!? Also why can't they just FLAT OUT ALLOW OUR PHONES to work like AT&T?!?!? meaning fix their 3G network! It would ONLY take a software update. lol. however, hint hint. the software update would make their 3G look like 4G lmao! because their 4G is so lame! hahahhaha
but to answer your question... wimax development/adding new towers/supporting has been shut down. they do not care about their WiMax and they never have cared about it. Yes I hope their CEO reads this comment! hope he reads makes changes in his crap company after reading this. BUT fact is that he doesn't care about you and I. he only cares about his own pockets. he would care less if he drags sprint into bankruptcy because he already made his millions on ruining a company.

This is just hate speech and upset ranting. You make some okay points, but get over is what I think.
OP, you need to go to the dialer, type in ##DATA# and check your WiMax settings. If there is anything about vm or virgin mobile in the settings, that is probably your issue. If you know your msl, edit the settings (you can find the right ones for sprint somewhere on here) and that should make a difference. Also, there is a thread about 4G Hack in the Apps, Themes section. Check that out.

Actually. it's called facts. There aren't any legit towers. Even if you're right next to a tower... you get the same speed with AT&T. lol There is no hate or ranting. It's just rolling eyes at another large company that doesn't care about it's customers anymore. then again. They're all that way these days. sadly. oh well It's 3G speeds... not 4G. I can get better speeds by Morse code. lol

Hi I have an evo 3d on boost mobile but it only gets 3g is it possible to get 4g service on it? help will be greatly appreciated
Ummmm, well obviously you will only get 4g if your area has 4g Wimax. If it doesn't, there's no way to make 4g magically appear...
more importantly right now boost is not provisioning other 4g phones besides their crappy design 4g. so short answer no long answer no but if they would just let users use clean esn sprint phones on their network then you could. because you cant copy the wimax crap from a evo design or 3d because someone hasent figured out the rsa codes.
Hello -
Here's the scenario... I upgraded from my EVO 3D to a newer phone with 4G LTE (Sprint). I'm still a Sprint customer, and I'm trying to find a use for my old EVO 3D. Since 4G LTE coverage is still pretty spotty in my area, and the Wifi "hotspot" doesn't seem to work (even with FoxFi) on my new phone, one thought was to turn my old EVO 3D into a Wifi hotspot that uses Sprint's Wimax network or just another device for someone in my family to use for Internet access.
So my question is, if I root my 3D, is it possible to "manually" enter the Wimax authentication such that my 3D can connect to the Wimax network? I know my not-activated phone can still see the 4G Wimax network because if I turn on the radio it connects and gets a signal. It just fails to route data over Wimax (throws an authentication error).
Has anyone tried this? My understanding is that Sprint piggy-backs Clear's Wimax network, and based off my understanding of Clear's authentication, it just comes down to an approved device ID and username/password.
Any thoughts? It would be pretty neat to have a mobile Wifi/Wimax "hotspot" for areas with bad or non-existent 4G LTE coverage (which is a ton of places with Sprint).
Thanks,
Well it can be done but what you must do is really on the hush hush with xda. It requires doing something they consider to be on the line of illegal so I doubt anyone will give you much help.

You need to clone your phone use Google as your friend for this one because it is ILLEGAL you shall not receive help on xda ever for this till it gets legal which is highly unlikely to happen
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Tip on cloning. Do not erase the backdoor or your 3vo will revert back to original esn after awhile. Also cloning is a thin gray line but not exactly illegal as far as i have been able to dig up. Many guides for flashing phones to other networks use cloning. There are even some providers that will clone the phone for you. I really doubt they would do it if it was illegal.
nvm, got my answer
i just rooted and unlocked my sprint evo 4g lte. esn is likely going to come up bad as i failed to satisfy sprints commitment. is it possible to flash now to cricket and work or is the phone absolutely worthless now?

I believe cricket uses Sprint, so I doubt you can use a bad Sprint ESN on cricket, but I could be wrong.
However, I just bought a bad esn Evo 4G LTE on craigslist, was planning on using it as a wifi device.
Then I found this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838606
I currently had PagePlus [Verizon MVNO] and was on a HTC Rezound that I'd manually programmed [from another xda guide just like that except for the Rez] in November '12. So I figured, hey, why not give it a shot? time for an upgrade. It's a superior device in most respects, though I have found a few issues my Rez didn't have. [Headphone jack seems to give static while using wifi]
So anyway, long story short, it took me half a day to get the Stock rom back on [you should be able to find my post in the Q&A near the top. lol] so I could program it with CDMA Workshop, and QPST.
But the bottom line: My bad esn Evo 4G LTE phone is now happily running on PagePlus, which has some pretty good plans.
I just run on the pay as you go plan [10c min/5c text] because I only use my phone occasionally, but they have $30/month with 2000 Min, 3000 Text, 500 MB data. [You might only have 1X speeds, I'm not sure because I haven't tested my data as it charges $0.99/MB].
gl!
