Mobile hotspot is it free? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm a bit confused; on the note 2 there is a hotspot configuration. If you have a tired plan is it free to use; or do you have to use an alternative (such as foxfi) to avoid charges? When I click on it it doesn't seem to mention anything about payment.

If you have a "share everything" plan, then yes it is free. If you are on the old school "family plan" where you had unlimited data, then no it is not free.

If you are on an unlimited data plan, you need to use a widget or toggle to activate the hotspot.
For some reason, this gets around the activation check so you don't have to pay the monthly access fee.
On a tiered plan it is free anyway although you would rather quickly run through the allowed data amount.

I have neither; I have a tired plan which is not unlimited and not a share everything plan.

just install a custom rom and it will be free regardless of what type of data plan you have.

All you need is root, you don't need a custom ROM for that.

No; I obtained my plan last year which was after they stopped offering unlimited but before they started the 'share everything'. It is actually possible to get a non-shared everything plan today (at least according to verizon faq) but they do not explicitly mention them (also I have no clue if the faq is out of date).

You don't even need root, just a toggle widget. Was using the widget on stock phone for weeks before rooting/unlocking.

I didn't realize that. I rooted my phone five minutes after I took it out of the box......
I know we used to need root to use the free wireless tether, but the VZ hotspot was not an option back then.

I'm sorry. I literally just got this phone today. Was this "toggle widget" removed? I went through each widget on the phone and found no toggle anything widget of any kind. Could you point me in the right direction please? Download?
Thanks.

Search the market hotspot toggle or something similar. Use the widget to turn on hotspot.
I use swicthpro widget. But the are plenty of free alternatives.

Right, there are TONS of free widgets in the playstore that will work.
If you flash any of the custom ROMs at somepoint, they all have it in the taskbar ready to use.

Thanks guys. Literally searched hot spot toggle. Got fattin. Works fine.

Just on the off chance..
I buy 6 gig a month with Verizon on the latest plan. Regardless of whether I use the original verizon rom or another one with free wireless I still am adding to that 6 gig pool each time I use the network whether from my pc or from my phone directly correct? I'm not missing anything am I? That's the point of my post Thanks!

On verizon if you have a non-unlimited plan you have free hotspot period. There are no restrictions and this make sense. Unfortunately with AT&T on the lower level plans (such as 2GB) this is not the case; so on at&t they do attempt to restrict hotspot usage for those who do not pay for hotspot service but it is harder for them to restrict with custom rom.

Wifi tether app can't be tracked by verizon?

Even if they somehow can, if you have the unlimited data plan then they can't do or say anything. Its an application on the official Android Market, and in your contract there is no clause stating you can't tether your phone. So you're in the clear brutha

I'm sure they can still say something. Most "unlimited" plans with ISPs have an "acceptable use" clause (which is completely within their discretion) so if they feel you are abusing the service they can still cancel your service. It's kinda BS but that's contracts for ya.
Whether they can prove you are tethering or not excessive data is excessive data and is probably enough to throw up a flag for them to give it another look.
Either way, if you need it...may as well do it till you get called out instead of worrying about something that may never happen. You can probably make an argument/plee on the first accusation anyway.
Ive done over 15 gigs and i still have about 15 days or so left on this bill. Most of it was spent on nonstop Netflix for about 7-8 hours a day minus the weekends.
which apps are you guys using?
I can't seem to get one that doesn't launch the verizon tether app.
That and my xoom won't see the freebies app.
I'm on course to clear 25gig by the end of my billing period. Not a peep outta them! The app is called wireless tether. Get it on XDA.
They can tell but they would have to disect your data, may be some privacy issues involved. Most carriers are still figuring out how to approach it. Expect them to "attempt" to aggressively combat this soon.

I believe that those of us who are grandfathered into the old unlimited data plan do not share that restriction on our contract, but i could be wrong. However, when I posted that, I had read through the contract, and i didnt see that. So please, take this time to chill out

CM7/Official VZW wifi hotspot HELP!!!!

Okay so I am running the latest CM7 on my Thunderbolt. I am interested in taking advantage of the official tethering abilty detailed on Droid-life. (it wouldn't let me post the link).. Basically it's 30 extra bucks a month for unlimited 4g tethering (for those of us currently "grandfathered" into unlimited 4g)
Yes, I am okay with paying for this service. Has anyone successfully added this feature and used it in conjunction with CM7? Thanks in advance for any help!
If you were on Synergy you wouldn't need the official ass raping by Verizon hotspot app....
As for every other rom, you have Wireless Tether.
Why pay for double unlimited ability?

Your rom is not special. He uses CM7 and it has tether built it. It had it long before the thunderbolt and long before your ROM existed. Please don't post off topic stuff to talk up your ROM. This isn't the place to do it.
Anyways, he wants to pay for it and use it legitimately. That's his choice.
To the OP, have you tried grabbing it out of a ROM that has it and installing it on your phone? I can't say if it will work, but it's worth a try.
paying for tethering is like paying for two orders of all-you-can-eat pancakes at Dennys. does not compute.

not sure, it seems all verizon apps don't work without sense being built into the rom. If you want to officially tether you might to try out a sense ROM.
So far all the unofficial tether apps I have used do not work over 4g, they give me 3g speeds.
the one on the newest CM7 gave me better then 3g speeds when I had it tethered. But even then it still doesn't make sense to pay for the teather when we have a free version even if it is a little slower you're paying $30 a month for the data then another 30 for the teather? Sounds foolish.
Paying for Hotspot while running CM7 is like... the weirdest thing I've ever heard. You paid for the phone, it has that ability, you turn it on. Why pay again for something you can do for free. It's not like your data plan doesn't already cover what you're paying for AGAIN.
Not paying for data twice. Pay data once, tether fee is for integrity.

shame on someone following the contract they agreed to...
Think about if for a second, all the freeloaders in this thread. The all you can eat pancakes at Denny's analogy is a bad one and does not compute here. Since you can tether multiple devices at the same time with Hotspot, your Denny's analogy is more like you trying to pay for one all you can eat while feeding up to 8 people. I'd like to see a single Denny's or any other all you can eat venue of your choice willing to do that. Why should Verizon?
I'm really trying to be nice here, but all you moochers could well ruin it for all the rest of us. If you want the service, pay the friggin tether fee.

If you're going to pay for "integrity" you should probably know a little bit more about what you're going to piss your money away on first.
LTE through big red follows block c provisioning from the FCC. That tethering is your right, and it is supposed to be free according to the people who regulate it (assuming you're on 4g)
If you're not using your 4g connection, feel free to give big red your $30/month for subpar 3g speeds on a network congested with iphone kiddies swapping pics of their budding chests and whatever else kids under 18 do with phones these days.
If big red had an hspa+ 3g with 4mbit connections it might be worth paying for.
I for one won't be paying for either my 3g or my 4g, one for the principal and the other because it's not even worth my effort to attempt a connection.

To check your data usage download the "My Verizon" app. The widget is a joke so just use the shortcut. You can also go to www.verizonwireless.com and sign in to see your account information which shows your data use in there somewhere.
In terms of your phone plan, if you upgrade your phone through Verizon or a Verizon agent at a lower price you will have to sign a new contract thus you will be forced to move to a tiered data plan. The only way to keep your unlimited data is to buy the new phone at the full retail price or get it from another source that's not a Verizon agent like Ebay.
Also you have to remember that Verizon does throttle its top 5% of data users.

Do you still do Tethering?

For those still have unlimited data:

3. Other, please leave your comment
For those do tethering, how much data (roughly) do you consume monthly from tethering?
I heard Verizon will terminate the unlimited data if you get caught. Is this the case?

Average 50-100gb a month and Verizon can't terminate your unlimited
When they bought the 700mhz spectrum they said they wouldn't limit
If they do terminate u take their ass to court

Average 2-4 GB/mo; mostly phone data though.
1. Most I used was 90gb total...theres 2 PS3 in the house n having brothers download everything...yea -_- and I have PS+ so i dl all the free games ha but it averages to about 40-60gb tethered for over a year now lol
Since lte came into our area, we've ditched cable Internet and wife and I use our phones to tether. We used to average 50-60gb a month. Since I rooted her phone (Rezound), we've been averaging over 110gb. Kids stream a lot of movies, videos, and gaming uses some.

Technically it's still not allowed to use 3rd party apps to tether on unlimited data plans:
What if I have an old Verizon unlimited data plan? Can I download an app and avoid the $20 tethering fee too?
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. Verizon says that customers under the unlimited plan are required by the company's terms of service to pay an additional fee to tether their device.

AT&T offering data plan doubling for free, Short time only and unannounced.

Please ready the fowling message, which AT&T has not made public.
For a short period we are being offered a nice boost for data plans, but you need request it. Double your data for free. I did this today without issue.
I was actually on the 10gb plan mentioned in the article. I bumped my plan to 15gb for $30 more (total $130/month) but in doing so, my data jumped to 30gb. It turns out to be roughly $4.5/gb(w/ tax).
The crazy thing is, a 1gb plan cost $25 +tax...
It's a good deal folks and the ability to double will only last until the end of October.

Probably the only reason I'm still an AT&T customer (along with the fact that I hate Sprint and Verizon)
Sadly, it's only on the 15 GB and up plan, so for those of us on the 10 GB plan, or lower plans, no love They can double all the data on their prepaid arm though, Cricket, not for us though.
