I've been playing around with the android emulator, I've got the standard google rom to run fine, but when I extracted the Sammy rom to the relevant directory and ran the AVD, I just get stuck with a blank emulator screen, left it running for hours and nothing loaded.
Has anyone managed to emulate the Sammy stock rom, or is it not possible at the moment ?
I'm wanting to swap out some of the Sammy apk's with Sammy apk's that have been modified to look like native android apps, such as MMS and Contacts, hate the Sammy apps look and feel.
I've been running stock with modified apk's for over a year now, just haven't made the upgrade to JB since I don't want to lose my custom apk's and they won't work on JB.
If there's an easier way to modify apk's than constantly reflashing them to the physical device or running an AVD I'd be happy as a pig in sh*t to try it out

The Vanilla AOSP found Here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962636 is smooth and fast, and it connects to my work wifi which uses PEAP (which I could not with TNT Lite). But it has no file explorer, no way I know of to install .apk files, how am I supposed to install anything? I got the correct gapps, and installed that, thinking it would install market and I could get started there, but it did not. What am I doing wrong?
well, due to the overwhelming response, I decided to try Vegantab. It at least works with teh PEAP. It is nowhere near as smooth as the AOSP, but it'll have to do until I can figure out the AOSP install stuff.
Hi All,
as you may see, I'm new to XDA and even though I'm familiar with linux, I'm new to the whole Android thing. I successfully flashed VillainROM onto my SGA and noticed that I don't like the stock gingerbread launcher. So I tried to get any TouchWiz-Style launcher on my phone:
I tried the "TouchWiz Launcher for Gingerbread [V4]":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049501
I had to replace the "update-binary", but finally it doesn't match the screen size of the sga and moreover it always crashes when I'm trying to start any app.
I also tried the "Honeycomb" theme:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104335
Some icons and the general menu style changed, but the launcher didn't change - could that be because I couldn't figure out how to install that "minimal.zip"-file?
I somewhere grabbed "TW4_for_Tab - 182dpi.zip" of which I thought it was made for the sga, but it failed to install.
Besides, I tried some other TouchWiz (4) mods of which I can't find the reference anymore. Some of them didn't install (the well-known "error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip") even with a replaced "update-binary", so that wasn't a success either.
I figured out how to mount the unmodified 2.3.3 Samsung-ROM and could access the TouchWiz30Launcher.apk - but I didn't try to move it to my system folder because it isn't de-odexed - is it a problem to put a non-de-odexed apk (and it's .odex) onto a generally de-odexed phone?
Now I'd like to know if there is any easily usable TouchWiz I could use. Some enhanced version of TouchWiz with additional features would be nice, but I think I would also be satisfied with the unmodded Samsung TouchWiz.
Thanks in advance!
Okay so I decided to stick to stock rom, because after last update I'm finding it very fast, and my battery seems to last longer then ever (I do have it supercharged and im using 128MB of swap), but I still like stock AOSP apps more than SE, so I took apps from JJ's hybrid (those should work w/o problems, as the rom is based on stock), I successfully 'installed' (copied to system/app) mms.apk, calendar.apk, deskclock.apk (for the latter I had to remove semcdeskclock.apk because of same signature), however, when I tried to 'install' phone app, the phone started misbehaving (it won't connect to mobile network, and settings stopped working randomly).
How do I get stock AOSP phone, contacts and that nice menu that you get, if you click on a contact shortcut on dekstop (in this case SE decided to stick to android 2.1 style, for some strange reason. It looks very out of place).
I am not interested in running a custom rom again, because I tried a couple, and at least one important thing didn't work as it should've, and if possible, I would like to do it manually (copy all the files where they should go with file manager), but I'll settle for recovery zips too.
Thanks!
If you read through the thread for JJ's rom, you'll see that he had to modify quite a few things (framework, etc.) to get those AOSP apps working and (reasonably) bug free. Unless you're trying to reinvent the wheel, you'd be better off using his rom if you want them, there's no magic way to get them to work. His rom is available as a recovery zip (intended for locked bootloaders, but of course doesn't need to be) if you prefer that.
Yeah, I thought so. I'll stick to stock, it feels less buggy. Thanks!
Sent from my LT18i using xda app-developers app
The stock rom for the YP-G70 has a working fm radio app that I'd like to use with my current rom (CM 10.1).
Is this even possible?
If anybody's managed to do it, what're the steps? (the default apps are stored as .apk with a .odex file and xultimate can't seem to handle the files (get "top level error" about missing files and such)) If possible, I'd like to avoid using Linux since getting stuff to play nice through the virtual machine can be a headache.
As there don't seem to be any dev projects getting anywhere soon for the EU version.
Would it be possible to remove Sense for this phone and install a new launcher over the top (Apex or similar) (I am aware that I can just install a launcher, but I don't have the space on my phone, and I find it creates a very slow phone adding new layers)
So essentially make it senseless and completely mod my phone front end.

I got rid of most of the sense stuff but you do need to be careful... best thing to do is to use either root toolbox pro or titanium backup to freeze each app individually then if theres no problem you can delete them from your phone.. only problem I had was that on the original software all the stuff i deleted just reinstalled when the phone reset... but using deodexed version of eu gave me more freedom...
another problem can be that some launchers wont work when you convert them to system apps...
