Updating to Portico for Malaysian RM-821 phones - Nokia Lumia 920

Hey guys, this is just a small note to help out those who got a Malaysia Lumia 920 and is faces with its awful battery drains, crashes and camera. Took me a while to find the compatible files for this phone.
To get you started please have a look at the Flashing guides made by halabibk here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2112674
and the Navifirm firmware dowloader thread by tids2k here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971895
Once Navifirm app is downloaded and running. Select RM-821 > 1232.5951.1249.1007 > VAR APAC MY CV <your phone colour>.
Hope this helps u guys who cant wait for the push, as we malaysians know how slow the telco works in pushing updates..
Some download links that might help....

Re: Updating to Portico for Malaysian RM-812 phones
It's suppose to be RM-821 anyway yes MY rom is available in navifirm. It even has 4G option but too bad Malaysia not yet support 4G mobile and that's sux.

Maxis and Celcom already launched their 4G network earlier this year in certain location.

I called Maxis just now to clarify, they said they support LTE enabled phones also. Limited coverage tho.

I went to maxis ttdi. They said LTE for Mobile not available yet only modem usb. *Confused*

Hmm thats odd. The customer service said that it will be enabled automatically for all phones, just like 3g (of course the phone needs LTE support). No extra charges or rates whatsoever. She said you will just see your phone showing LTE once you're in the coverage area. odd indeed.

Yeah odd indeed. They even told me if we want to get LTE connection we must change our sim card to LTE sim card and the package will be different than 3G package. Lol its so funny maxis doesn't even know their product service.

its true that some carriers will require users to switch to a different sim (lte enabled) to utilize the LTE network. Similar to whn 3G was first launched, to utilize the 3G service, users were required to switch to a different sim that is 3g enabled.

You are right. Whole day yesterday maxis data was down. Today on the way to work. My L920 detected 4G connection at the curve area. Tested speedtest download 11M upload 3.65M. Lol. Better than unifi.

Nokia Malaysia FB admin responded to user saying it'll be phasing in Portico update this month, I rather wait for a while longer.
Maxis Centre confirmed that the network supports modem & phone that supports LTE 2600MHz, but only for data, cannot call out. Don't trust Maxis hotline, all said needa change the SIM/USIM card to 4G SIM card, but they don't have such SIM card available. Many SIM based application & UMMD need reset before can be used on some L920.
Celcom has not really launched 4G as it's still considered in public demo after their long trial, went to Blue Cube at Sunway Pyramid, no 4G signal detected even though they've 2 Huawei devices showing connection to 4G data, max 20Mbps/5Mbps using Speedtest.

FYI Portico update for Malaysia has been released in NaviFirm+. Been using it since 21/1/2013. You might wanna try it. On LTE its looking good. Some part of KD has LTE. example are Giants KD area. I'm glad they(MAXIS) didn't change any data package for mobile as i'm at unlimited package 99MYR/month.

Is there a US carrier lock on the Photon's SIM card slot?

Can the Photon 4G be used on AT&T or T-Mobile after unlocking the SIM card slot?
As far as whether or not the GSM radio is locked... no it isn't.
However, the software for the GSM radio is written in such a way that makes the phone "ignore" US based GSM carrier networks.
The TouchPro2, the last Smartphone world phone offering from sprint had this same implementation. It required a custom radio written to get around it.
So you are saying a rooted phone can actually use an AT&T sim or T-Mobile sim?

Not really. Rooted just means you now have admin access to the phone basically, does nothing else.
What he is saying is that the software the controls the radio would have to be rewritten in order to accept US GSM networks.
Whats funny though, is that i went into a no CDMA coverage area 2 days ago, and I got a message on my Photon that asked if I wanted to use the available GSM networks. I allowed it and it roamed off of a GSM network...calls worked great, data was very slow.

You were in the US when you did this? If so what Sim card is in your phone? and do you have the phone roaming set to auto, because the default is any CDMA.

Yes, actually in the west Michigan area. The SIM card is the standard that came with the phone. It was set to automatic when I got it, never actually looked at the roaming settings until I got that message.

my pleasure, for me it just means im less likely to lose service or drop calls. which very useful. utilizing that feature greatly improves the coverage map.
I would check on this first. For one the roaming agreement that Sprint has is only with Verizon(CDMA). From what I gathered on Sprints website they do not mention who they are in agreement with on roaming in the US but CS told me Verizon is who I would be roaming on. So I would check your account for strange charges before you go crazy using GSM, but at any rate this is awesome info.

Sprint used to have roaming agreements with AT&T, Dobson, Cellular One, etc back in the days of "Analog Roaming". I wonder if something here might be a legacy from that.

This item will put a definite buy in for me on this phone. I work in a fringe cellular area (CDMA and GSM), but the office just installed a GSM repeater for Blackberrys and GSM phones. If I could freely roam on the repeater I would have this phone asap.

That sounds good, but remember if 50% of your calls are roaming three months in a row, or 50% out of 12 month average then they will cut your contract and cancel your account.
I put a working T-mobile SIM in my Photon today and it did not work. It appears that the unlocked status of the phone does not extend to US carriers. I would be interested to see how the included SIM behaves in Canada with Bell or Telus who are roaming partners for Sprint and have both CDMA EvDO Rev A and HSPA+ networks.

[Q] International Use

In around two weeks, I'm leaving to Europe on a school trip. I found a website http://goo.gl/LyKpj that sells SIM cards that work in most of Europe. My two questions are that will my Amaze work with just the voice and text plan (no data) and does the Amaze use the 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 frequencies? Thank you
https://t-mobile.jive-mobile.com/#jive-document?content=/api/core/v1/documents/2614 n yes u could use it internationally

I use Viber to talk to my friend in China. It's a free wifi calling/texting app on the Market.
Give it a try.
Don't forget to call t-mobile
and get your sim unlock codes. They email it to you, and you can't enter it until you put the foreign sim in. I'd wait to get the sim until you get to where your going to, as you'll be surprised at the deals you can get once your there.
Get a different pay-as-you-go sim card in each country for the best deals.
Not much free wifi in Europe.. Don't rely on it.. In your hotel you should be ok though..

Yep.
AFAIK, to request SIM unlock code for subsidized phone (from TMO), you need to be 90 days on contract at least.
Or if you don't have subsidized phone (i.e. you bought it yourself) - you need to be on active contract.
It's explained somewhere on TMO site.
Or s-off and use the free method in the general forum to sim unlock your device.
Thanks for all the help. Prior to the post, I already sim-unlocked my phone from the method in the general section. I also already bought the SIM card and it seems to work. I placed it in and typed in the pin and everything seemed to be fine, except for the fact that they don't have connection in the US. Hopefully all goes well on my trip.

Hello, I've just receive an unlocked T-Mobile Amaze 4G phone from the US. The phone is not rooted and has a stock rom. Everything seems to be working fine but one thing:
NO MOBILE NETWORK (can't use mobile internet)

- call my operator support service
- root and flash a custom rom
- update radio version

Would appreciate any help.

[Q] Is GSM unlocked on Verizon S4

I just killed my Nexus and I'm not eligible for a discount with Verizon until 8/22. I'm looking at the S4, full price in my case, I guess (sigh!) Does anyone know if the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with GSM unlocked? (I remember reading that the Verizon iPhone 5 does and can be used abroad by simply swapping a local SIM card.)
During my trial purchase on the Verizon website, it asked me if I wanted to keep the current SIM number (yes), and later if I wanted the phone implemented for worldwide GSM (do you think they mean through their own services, hence locked GSM, or open to any carrier abroad)?
Thanks for the input.

All you have to do is give them a call and let em know you will be traveling abroad, they will adjust your plan accordingly. I dunno if the S4 is global capable though, hardware wise.... Make sure you call them before using it abroad, failure to do so will most likely result in a massive roaming bill....
If you look on the hardware specs, it says its a Global Ready phone on Verizon's website. It has GSM also. I think it is possbile to put in a att SIM and go. Don't hold me to it though

Yeah, I believe it's FCC required because of auction rules for the 700mhz band Verizon LTE is using.
That said, you may still need root to enable new APNs.

For now all I know is you can get WorldWide plan from verizon and you basically will be paying to verizon but you will use that other carrier as an atena... Cool, but it's VERY EXPENSIVE. Calls internet everything. Is there a way to somewhat hack sgs 4 verizon to use it internationally without needing that stupid expensive plan.
The SiMs are very cheap and the phone plans are very cheap in Europe, sometimes it's even more profitable to buy an unlocked phone just to travel.
So, does anyone know yet how to hack it ? There was a way like that on SGS 3.
I upgraded on Verizon and then traveled to Europe on the same day. All was working well with Verizon in the US. I then put in a sim card I bought when I arrived, and it worked for calling as soon as it started (no changes required). The add apn setting was greyed out, but it worked anyway. I put in the appropriate apn settings and it now does mobile data, voice, and sms. I dont know about MMS, yet.
I did all this without root access, but I went ahead and did the root procedure this morning.
I have to go to another country in 2 weeks, and I may get a different sim. If so, I will update after that.
I do have a persistant warning in the status bar telling me I am using a non-Verizon sim, but no other ill effects.

Hey, thanks for info. Are you using Verizons World Data plan ? If not, when you come back to US is it possible that you will get a pretty large bill for using outside of US ? What type of internet are you recieving, 3g, HSPA or maybe Edge ? What countries have you tried this in yet ?
Also where did you get the phone, pre order or in store?
Thank you, I'm asking so many questions because I really wanted to get an upgrade but I will be flying to Europe for this whole summer and I thought it wouldnt worth it right now.
No, I am not using Verizon's plan (as far as I know). I have a local prepaid sim and phone number with prepaid data on a gsm network (T-Mobile) and so I do not receive calls on my US Verizon number - they go straight to Google voice answering service. I get a H+ symbol for data when I am in an area with good reception, and 3g elsewhere. So far, I have only tried it around Berlin.
I bought the phone in the store.

E5823 - no 4G (UK)??

purchased an 'EU' z5c from ebay
I was wondering why I cant get 4g signal only H+ when in 4g areas
I have read the only difference between the E5823 and E5803 is the cat 6/cat 4 lte, I dont really know what this means but I assume this might be the problem
4g is set to 'preffered' in network settings menu
network provider is Three
any ideas?
Have you contacted your service provider? might be that you are prioritized to use HSPA, they might have to do a reset on you in their system or just enable 4G etc?

The phone was purchased unlocked and I have been using my Three SIM card in another phone (GS3 LTE) previously and this had 4G signal no problem ... dont see why putting the SIM into a new phone would then change some setting on the network provider's side..
I will contact them anyway
very disappointing I fear maybe this EU version is blocking Uk 4g somehow

" No Network" issue UK

Hi everyone
I am in the UK and bought the Note 4 Global version, as in the UK my provider uses Band 20
I am on Tesco, which piggy-backs the O2 network
However, on inserting the sim I receive the No Network error.
Tesco give me the usual "we don't sell those handsets so we can't provide technical support blah blah" "It must be locked blah blah"
The sim is fine as it was in his iPhone 5 (and still is because this won't connect to Tesco)
The Mobile Networks setting has been changed to what was on the previous phone, but with no joy.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance
Edit for stupidity:
Android 7.0 NRD90M
MIUI ver 9.0.5.0
Have you tried any other sim card in the phone? You can get one of those cheapie PAYG sims (for example, EE) from Tesco or your corner shop and see whether it has the same problem (which might point to a hardware issue or something funny going on with your ROM). I am not sure why you would have had to change the mobile networks setting. That should not be necessary at all.

Forgot to mention this is my son's phone.
I have an EE pay monthly sim. Tried that. Same thing. No Network.
Irony in the fact that it says TESCO 4G in the top band by the clock when he puts his sim in the Note 4 and 2 bars on connection.

Ok, it definitely should work with EE, and so this is clearly not a Tesco mobile problem. Either the hardware is faulty or the ROM (particularly the modem drivers) is faulty. You might want to return the phone.

Silly question, are you sure it's global version? A lot of "global" word from Chinese phones.
Is this the package?

I have the same sticker in the same corner
I had to order the Global specifically for the Band 20 in the UK
Any way to tell if it's not?

Darth, I think you may be onto something. You just triggered something I read earlier
Is this the same issue?

I suppose that the sim card is 4g card, right?

It looks like the same issue (on a different Xiaomi phone). The solution is probably the same - flashing the appropriate modem (firmware) files, or flashing a new complete ROM. I wasn't sure you wanted to go down that route, as it would give the vendor an escape route if something goes awry, or if the process doesn't solve the problem.

His is a 6GB Tesco 4G and mine is a 40GB Virgin/EE 4G
His sim states Tesco 4G in top right, my EE states No Service.
LTE Discovery. What am I looking for in there?
In the Sim 1 section it says:
Band 20
GCI: 00144E78
PCI: 71
TAC: 16624
-110dBm
On Signals it says EARCFN (LTE Band 20)
Just been through my email confirmation and this is the one they sent me
https://www.geekbuying.com/item/Off...Note-4-4G-64GB-Smartphone---Black-379093.html
Now forgive me if I'm wrong but that says HK Stock Global
What's the difference between that and the Global Rom?
Darth, am I going down the flashing routine? Not bothered if I am as long as it works
Jesus H, it seems everything I buy I have to reflash these days.
M8 boxes, Kindle Fires, phones

If the phone sees the signal and it does detect 4g ,than the phone is ok.
The problem is that 110db . That's practically dead zone. I would say your location is the problem. I know you said that Samsung has 2 bars but this is crappy phone .
Just to be sure, can you check in a a place with strong 4g signal?

Believe it or not, Tesco has really strong 4G in my village. Never a problem on that carrier
EE however is ****. I have "H" on their network and -123 dBm
But I don't use my data at home
My main problem lies with the calls and texts not being able to be connected
It seems I have been sent a HK Global Rom? This has Band 20
Is this an issue? I am in the UK. Should I have been sent a Global Rom? But this doesn't have Band 20
Is it the modem driver issue as stated earlier?

It should have come with global rom . I'm not sure though that it would effect frequency.
Try to change from global to lte/wcdma in preferred network

It seems that you will have to go down that route, unless you return the phone. Whether it works or not will depend on whether it is a hardware problem or just a ROM/firmware problem.
By the way, there is a firmware repository here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73534612&postcount=89
This requires you to have TWRP recovery.

Fired an email of to Geekbuying
See if they want me to send it back or give permission to add the modem drivers with warranty intact
Just noticed that with WIFI on it says I have Tesco 4G. When I turn WIFI off I have no service.
Bizarrely, after reading, this has been going on since the Note 3
Strangely, the phone is giving 4 bars for connectivity for calls. Yet you just try and a make a call
It's always my luck when people order from China and get this wonderful, working, all-singing all-dancing product ..... then I order one!

These things are often a hit-and-miss affair, especially when buying from outside the EU. I bought mine (two) from eBay (UK and Ireland based sellers) - much easier to get refunds via PayPal (and more likely to get a proper Global ROM). But it is possible that your problem will be fixed by flashing the latest global stable ROM.
Update
Took it to the Tesco Phone Shop this morning and they couldn't get any of their settings to work. Consistently No Network. Wouldn't even connect to the Tesco guy's Vodafone sim.
Tried a Virgin sim and it wouldn't connect either
Guessing something wrong with the global rom now?
As with Note 3, MIUI 8 and the missing modem drivers?
Sparked an email back to Geekbuying to see what they can do
Thanks all

Possibly - but there is also a possibility that it is a hardware problem. That will only become clear after successfully flashing a complete ROM (global or otherwise). Whether the ROM is global or China should not have any effect on connecting to a phone network (especially EE).
Which version of MIUI are you on? Try updating of there is an update available and see if that helps.
