Need some advice; should I buy the Motorola Atrix 4G or Sony Xperia Sola? I plan to use it with Straight Talk AT&T.
I'd go with the xperia if you have no other option. The Atrix has better specs but you'll at least start out with ICS on that and likely get JB later on. Moto has all nut abandoned the Atrix and aside from a small patch coming soon it has little life left before it's ancient history.

Interesting, so you have the Atrix but you'd rather have the Sola?
I posted the same thread in the Sola forum and 2 voted for the Atrix while 2 voted for the Sola. I suppose it's a toss-up

No, I'd rather have a phone that can be upgraded. I love the Atrix but for 'financial reasons' it's been ditched by it's manufacturer offering virtually no further support.
Although there is a slight possibility of an agreement whereby we may be able to get source for the upgrades, there won't be any official upgrades. To me there is no excuse for such poor support of a device. Particularly when you consider far more complex computers receiving updates sometimes a decade or more after it's release. I do give at least some respect (even though I shouldn't) for the fact that they dug themselves a hole to support far too many devices at once with a runaway release of newer ones each year which makes it logistically impossible to support them.
Get neither, wait for Motorola X. Should be as cheap as Nexus 4 if rumors are true.

Definitely not the direction I'm going in. Seems a bit too much like rewarding them for failing to deliver on the updates and gives them more incentive to do the same thing all over again knowing that people will still keep buying regardless of how much they fail to deliver.
Matrix is a good phone Motorola threw it away I got HTC Onex on Att bench mark stock 7600 never got close to that with. Atrix

absolutely SONY,MOTO had lost customer‘s trust.
Xperia Sola.
Sony or Samsung.
Xperia Sola. It have much better support, plus, it will get ported stock JB.
If you seek for a latest update, minimal usage(surfing, text, mainstream games)get the Sola. Overall experience, I'd go for Atrix eventho it got left behind with Gingy..
The Atrix have tons of awesome hardware (fingerprint sensor etc) , nice build quality and better audio. If you're much of a customizing and not afraid of unlocking your phone, go for Atrix
Don't buy an operator branded Sony handset! Unbranded ones are great, and very well supported but going by my experience with a friend's Xperia U, branded handsets are locked down like Fort Knox.
Why not an atrix2?

Motorola isn't the only company that has screwed someone over. Anyways the Motorola X is going to be the first phone released with Key Lime Pie. So technically it's a Nexus without its branding, like the Xoom which got updates all the way til 4.1

They may not be the only company that screwed anyone over, but for a number of people, they are the one that made the device that people are currently stuck with no updates and the only reward for brand loyalty is mixing some shards of glass into the lube on your next purchase. What incentive do I or anyone else have to take another chance on Motorola?

I'm sure the AT&T Motorola X will come especially locked to prevent you accidentally installing a 'software update' if such a thing even exists. and for those who like to dig deeper, a special feature to shoot you in the face if you try to unlock the bootloader.
No thanks, never again. I won't give the company any money on principal, even if the next Nexus is a Motorola, and it's otherwise great.
That's why I'm going with the T-Mobile unsubsidized plans, and if it's as cheap as the Nexus 4 unlocked I'm going to get it.

Sad Motorola boycotter is sad to hear that XDA members will not be boycotting crappy companies who need to apologise for their crappy ways and sort this situation out by releasing kernel source at the very least.
They'll do it again, I'm sure. Don't get burned. I mean, they promised to change their ways just before cancelling the Atrix update.

Agreed. However, I was just looking at AT&T's current offerings, with the exception of a couple devices, their Android lineup is the most underwhelming thing I've seen since my LG Vu.
Edit:
T-Mobile's lineup doesn't look much better.

My contract ends on the 2nd and I've been comitted to getting the Droid X. I wasn't aware the Thunderbolt was coming out this month. I'm on a tight budget...should I roll with the X or wait for the bolt? Also...do u have to get a 4g data plan or could you just get a 3g plan on the bolt? I am not stoked on the limited dev options with the X so I'm worried.
Thanks
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Get the Thunderbolt. Trust me, it will be worth the 2-3 weeks extra wait time. Better hardware, should be good build quality since it's made mostly of aluminum, and what's not to like about faster speeds? As of now there is no information on the pricing options for 4G smartphones.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
That's the thing I don't want to wait and then get the shaft by having to get a 4G plan. I don't need or want it. I need to sell my Eris as well to be able to afford the bolt.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
I would definitely get the Thunderbolt. I also was looking for a Droid X. My friend got an EVO and I fell in love with the 4.3" screen. Then I started reading about the locked bootloader and very limited dev options for the DX. The Thunderbolt is just going to be an all around better phone, especially if you want custom roms and kernels. I wouldn't imagine the 4G plan adding more than $10 maybe $15 to your bill.
Again, I agree with Omen. If you're looking for a decent phone with many dev capabilities, this phone isn't for you. This phone is better than that; it's top notch. Get a droid incredible instead. It just dropped to $100 with 2 year contract.

I have the X i love the Phone but it does kinda stink that about getting custom Roms, like FULL ones with the new kernals and everything. From what i have been reading on line the 4g plan is going to be 29.99 just like 3g but you know verizon can change that any time lol The thunderbolt looks amazing is it going to have a impossible boot loader like the Motorola products have?
Talked to a VZW rep yesterday about our company phones and I wanted to also move to a new phone for myself. I asked about the TB and said I didn't want to pay extra because I don't live in an 4g area. I was told that there is no extra charge for 4g.

It is highly unlikely that it will have a locked bootloader. It would be a first for HTC to do so as far as I know.

A second considering the G2 and all that mess...
I'd go with the Thunderbolt. HTC uses better camera parts than Motorola, doesn't lock their bootloaders, 4G will be nice and shouldn't cost extra. I've had the Droid X since release and it's not been that amazing. I'm suffering (as are many others) severe reboot issues due to Moto's buggy .340 kernel and since we can't change our kernel... we have to continue to deal with this maddening problem.
I'm no longer a Motorola fan. Not to mention that HTC is usually a bit faster than Motorola on getting out updates for new software... and you'll get a front-facing camera with video chat!
I don't count Samsung phones... broken GPS and horrible software updates, plus a lack of Cyanogenmod... LG phones suck, and Motorola phones are too locked down. So, I see HTC as the only real player in the game today for quality, customizable Android phones. Plus, I like their aspect ratio for their 4.3" screens... not the widescreen size Motorola uses, which is too tall and not wide enough for me.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
I'm running the. 340 update and have not had one random reboot since ice update. With liberty applied and a couple of other tweaks its a great phone (DX) but it had very limited dev support because there isn't really **** you can ultimately do with a locked bootloader, it doesn't have near the support of my fascinate, and no where the support of my DInc, but with that said, at the end of the day, I use my Droid x for one reason. Battery life. I suspect the battery life on the thunderbolt wont be as good as the x, but it had great specs a great proccessor and more RAM, IT WILL BE A AWESOME PHONE. IM SO DRUNK I DONT KNOW WHAT IM SAYING! !

Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
I watched the event. Now hoping that the X2 is on the list to get the update.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
I am going to say that the X2 wont get it, at least not anytime soon until Moto breaks it down and skins it(so maybe next summer). The fact that there is so much built into the phone to function without buttons means that Moto has to build in and map their functionality. And, since supposedly the Xoom is the first to get it on tablet, you would think it would go to the Razr, then Bionic/Atrix 2/Photon 4g, THEN the lower end devices. Needless to say, I don't think you should get your hopes up.
I watched it though. I was VERY impressed with some of the things I saw! The lock screen portion with the video was really cool! However, I don't think I would want my phone to do that everytime, seems too tedious still. Maybe after the phone has been passive for 20 minutes or something like that.

My thoughts are, with the patent wars, Google is trying to cover their ass right now. Until the proposed deal is approved, they are wanting to make sure that nothing slips thru the cracks that could be harmful to their cause in the hands of the opposition. Not to mention, they probably have some new devices in testing along with new hardware components that would be in Google's best interest not to have leaked until they are certified by the FCC. I am going to have to give Google the benefit of the doubt, and say until the deal is approved, they are doing what they can to cover their asses.
As far as VZW being to blame for Moto, I think it has to do with the fact that Moto is an American company, and they can be pressured by big Red. Whereas HTC and Samsung typically have a broader market share outside of the US. Especially with Sammy being a monstrosity of a Korean company in all terms. I lived in Korea for 2 years(Army), LG and Sammy run their world over their! LG is even the biggest ISP! They are leaps and bounds beyond what we have in the US over there though. Thanks to the FCC and FTC! My computer monitors are 2 Innopix 24" OLED 1920x1200 and I bought them there almost 4 years ago for $150/ea! I built my entire computer setup there Feb 2008, I still score a 6.8 on Windows experience index. Cost me less than $1,500 for what would have cost $4,000 easily to buy off of Best Buys shelf... Not to mention Apple, ugh.

The simple fact that they locked the Razr before it is even released, lends me to believe your hopes will be crushed. Sorry man, no reason to lock a phone during the same period you stated you would unlock them.
Now, if 4.0 is still a "Google Experience" as other phones update to it, without their blur's and sense's like honeycomb was for tablets, MAYBE.

I understand the locked bootloaders because VZW probably spends thousands of dollars replacing phones for people who don't know what they are doing, just trying to impress friends. But still, we payed for it, its ours, we should be able to break it if we want

i'll be heading to the S3 soon as well! no moto support and locked bootloaders = unhappy camper.
I've kind of shifted into "a phone is a phone" mode. No compelling differentiation anymore for me with all the tech advances - I don't want a larger screen and don't need a faster CPU or more memory. But having said that, I'll probably upgrade next year to either Samsung or HTC. Moto's "lock it down hard for corporate IT departments" doesn't work for me as a consumer.

Official jellybean will not come before christmas as official ICS isnt even scheduled till Q4. My thoughts are that if they do not release official ics for the atrix, they will 'not' release it for the photon. If they do release it, however, then yes we will have fully working jb by christmas. But not officially from moto.
"Say Apple one more MoPho'n time..."
Well they did promise most Android Motorola phones released in 2011 will be getting Jellybean before the end of the year and if not will be receiving a 100 dollors towards an upgrade, to Motorola of course. They are Google owned now, it's not entirely impossible ...

Where have I heard this song before? I'm done with HTC because of their lack of support for this phone. Verizon too. I've really been disappointed with this phone when Verizon did such a big effort to say how awesome and revolutionary it was.
I'm not holding my breath for it. I see it this way.. Why would they update the OS on these phones when they can just sell us a newer model that matches these phones exactly BUT has a newer OS.. Apple has done it for years.. why not HTC?
I'm not sure if anyone else feels this way, but ICS being released has no effect on my purchasing a new phone. It would be freakin awesome if tomorrow ICS was out, but if I wanted to upgrade, ICS wouldn't sway me back into keeping the Thunderbolt. I don't want a new phone because I don't want to buy it full price or eBay or Craigslist or whatever. And I don't want to lose my unlimited data. Soooo.....I'm sticking with the Thunderbolt for now. When I do decide to upgrade and buy a new phone, having ICS, Jelly Bean, Key Lime Pie, etc. on the Thunderbolt won't matter to me. So for now, I hope ICS comes out really soon. I'm tired of flashing the same ROMs over and over.

Agreed. They could come out with Jelly Bean for the TB, but it doesn't change the fact that the hardware and look are outdated.
It's buisness. They are not in a rush to release it whether it is ready or not. There are a list of priorities and knowing Verizon customer service has always been on the low end. So considering giving the thunderbolt ics would simply be providing customers with a generous update, my guess is that it is low on the list of priorities. People shouldn't knock HTC. Their products are good quality and are actually outstanding in some aspects (minus the battery life). Verizon is the issue here and Google did the right thing in not giving them the nexus 4. LTE is more or less a scam as far as what a phone can actually render. HSPA+ is plenty. I'm with Google on this one. Verizon and their gouging for money and lack of customer service leads to my decision that I'm better off on my own no contract just Google and a sim card.
HTC really dropped the ball with ICS for the thunderbolt. Do rectify the situation they should offer discounted new phones to Thunderbolt owners. The phone was just absolutely terrible...
I will end my Verizon contract and go back to Tmobile in the summer. Sick of this terrible lack of support.

I saw a thread somewhere that Verizon WAS giving out new phones for Thunderbolts. Maybe if you flash it to stock and complain about reboots etc which they can't prove out. Personally, I'm still relatively happy with the community for providing awesome ROMs, though it would be nice if they had good source to work from.
They was giving out other phones awhile back because they had no cln bolts as replacement. They don't do that now unless you have replaced like 5 to 7 bolts in a period of time.

Probably on Launch Day.
Nope. The screen will KILL battery life like butter.
Via my Google Galaxy S3 running sweet sweet Jelly Bean
Depends on the off contract price... expecting it to be around 7-8 hundred so probably not.

I agree we already have the same phone in 2 other threads. Although I sound a bit like a hippocrit since I made a thread on the Japanese version when they had the dlx thread out.

Nope. The rezound is my last HTC device. They make decent quality stuff, but they refuse to support it. (see tablets) After buying two tabs and getting the shaft, I have made a vow to not buy another HTC product. Not to mention the hoops they make us jump through just to root and rom our phones. They might aswell be dead to me.

Delete it then fine by me. I only saw the butterfly thread and was just trying to provide some information.

Samsungs is easily bypassable. Which is where I plan on going. And it's not like "htc's unlockable" BL does all that much good. If it did we wouldn't need to s-off.

Well, it started with the many replacements of the tbolt, then HTC's hard stance against updating their tablets kinda pushed me over the edge, then they updated the flyer/view to broken software and they wont even fix it. Now the Rezound is having touchscreen issues. So I'm just tired of dealing with the problems and the lack of OEM support after purchase. I appreciate the Dev community for the zound, but sammy seems to be stronger in that dept. So I think I am going to give them a shot. I won't touch Moto with a ten foot pole. It may be a bad move, but I'm willing to take that risk after all the issues I have had recently with HTC. So for me, from here on out, it's going to be Nexus, or Samsung.
Samsung is worse.
I love my Rez and I still think of it as probably one of the, if not the most undervalued android phone released to date, but I don't see myself going for yet another carrier exclusive device after this. Of course, reviews might be so great for the DNA that I could change my mind but so far I am not that impressed.
Having said that however, the lack of a LTE capable Nexus 4 kinda limits the options for those looking to upgrade atm and I really cant see myself with a Galaxy S device. Wish Sony would be given a chance at penetrating the US market, they seem to strike a fair balance between corporate dev support, hardware and software quality.
I'll be getting this. The hardware and build quality will be top notch, it can be unlocked through HTCs dev website and be able to load cm. It was between this and the note but son, I am dissapoint at it having the older gen exynos and 720p screen on a 5.5 inch screen.
no, my next phone will be honor 2 or note 2
battery is important factor to me now
i dont think i will ever came back to htc
even im sense-boy
Nah, samsung isn't worse.

Its looking like ill most likely be getting it. I'm thinking ill be getting the DNA and one other new gen phone probably a GSM phone since I have two contracts, one with ATT and one with Verizon.
But I will be more careful than usual with this purchase. I'm currently so broke I can't afford the down payment on a grilled cheese sandwich. But this phone is a priority, and I owe it to the BAMF community. So I've been saving my pennies and will be selling some stuff to raise some funds.

samsungs radios and signal are 10x worse.
in my house, my gs3 gets about 6kbps download on 3g.
my rezound, when its not pulling 4g in my house (which the nexus and GS3 CAN'T), pulls atleast half a meg to a meg per second. doing anything on the gs3 on 3g is terrible, and ridiculously slow. fb app won't even load. rezound loads it no problem. hell, i even tethered 3 tablets to my rezound last night and while we were all browsing at the same time, ti was STILl faster than my gs3
i don't think i'd buy antoher samsung phone ever again, and i really want the DNA...dunno if i wanna fork out 600 bones for it tohugh
