OK, I got a new GNote 2 last weekend and love it so far. I was also wanting to get the new seagate wifi portable hard drive, but was wondering if it was possible to share movies and music and such that I have on my GNote with my Nexus 7. My Nexus 7 only has 8 gigs of storage and I've filled that up already. Was wanting to use this for when i have to drive halfway across the country and back to pick up my son from my ex so that I can have a lot of movies and such to watch on the N7.

Since Samsung is only releasing a 16GB version of the tablet here in Canada, there's no option for 32gb unless ordering from the US. After base o/s install, there is roughly 12GB free. Has anyone bought the 16GB and found it to too limiting? 12GB is probably plenty of room for quite a few app installs, but adding videos would kill it real quick. The omission of an sd card slot is really disappointing, but it is what it is. Buying an android tablet unfortunately seems to be more about making compromise than anything.

So far 16GB's seems to be more than enough for me. It really depends on how you set your self up. Here's a couple of things I've done to help give me a bit more usable room on my Tab.
1. Use online storage like Dropbox and Box.net and their android apps. With Dropbox you can get 2GB's free and if you get other people to sign up from a link you email them you can get more free storage. I got most of my family and a few friends to sign up this way, I'm up to 5GB's of free online storage with Dropbox alone. Box.net you can get another 5GB's of free online storage for free just for signing up. I use both of these to store all of my wallpapers, icons pictures and such. Saves a ton of room and makes everything available to me no matter where I am. You can use these sites from your Tab or your phone by using their apps or any laptop or desktop by going to their sites.
2. If you plan on using your Tab for work things like word docks, spreadsheets and PDF's... Use Google Docs, I've been using Google Docs for the last few years now and haven't even come close to using up the space they give you for free. I'm a chef and use it to keep all of my recipes, cost control documents... Again for the same reasons I stated above. I've also started using EverNote over the last year and now that I have my Tab I find myself using it even more. Being a chef I'm very much into keeping a running record of the food and dishes I make. With EverNote I can snap a picture with my eVo of a special or new dish and make a few key quick notes, then on the train ride home at the end of the day I can edit that note on my Tab to make it more detailed.
3. For your music you can use any number of online music storage sites. I use Googles Music Beta, again for the reasons i've stated before. I can get to everything in my collection from anywhere, on my phone, my Tab and any computer anywhere.
Those 3 things alone save a ton of space on my Tab as well as my eVo and make it very easy for me to access all of my stuff from anywhere.
It should leave you with more than enough space on your Tab for any number of apps. As for movies, just make sure that they are formated right. And how many times can you watch the same movie over again, once you've watched vid or movie just either delete it or one it to your computer.
I have over 50 apps installed on my Tab, all of the StarWars movies, and I mean all of them 1 through 6 and some other movie with Mat Damon in it. And I still have over 7GB's free memory.
Live in the cloud brother... Make thing a bit easier.

16GBs isn't enough for me. Typically most one hour 720P HD video clips will take up anywhere from 1.5 to 1.9GBs and that leaves me little room for music. Despite using spotify, dropbox, pandora, and netflix i still can't keep enough media to last me for a trip longer than 5 hours
A quick question to you guys: are the 32/64 bit versions not available anywhere in Europe? For me 16GB is definitely not enough. I am struggling with 32GB on my current Galaxy Tab 7"....

um ok. I guess you've never been on a long road trip or train ride. There is only so many times you can watch the same movie/video over again.
16GB is definitely enough for what most people use tablet for. But it's true that there are times where i do store HD movies in the tab and i wish i could store more HOWEVER it's definitely not enough to justify getting 32gb for $100 more
This has been discussed to some extend here: Is 16GB enough?
For me it's more than enough. With all the cloud space everywhere I don't need more. I have with me the stuff I really need/want and everything else is available only via an internet connection.
That might not be an option for someone else. That person needs to wait for/get a 32/64 GB model. I'm perfectly happy with the 16 GB.

That's what the USB adapter and two USB thumb drives are for.
64GB extra instead of 16GB extra for $100 extra.
with apps like google music and netflix i have yet to run out of space on my 16gb.
I bought the 16GB version today. I almost mail ordered a 32gb from the US, but then I thought if I have hardware issues I might be out of luck. I plan to get the USB adapter which I can only find on ebay right now.

Today I told a friend about getting the TP and her main concern was that she has some movies in iTunes that she watches on her (Windows) laptop. Whenever she wants to watch a different movie, she just plugs in her 2TB backup hard drive and copies/syncs with iTunes.
I had no idea how she would go about watching those saved movies on her TP if she gets one, so said I would ask.
Would she need to use DoubleTwist to accomplish this? I am not exactly sure what she meant by switching out her movies with iTunes. I am guessing she uses iTunes for all her music/movies and listens/watches them through the iTunes program.
She is going back to Africa next month so her internet connection won't be extremely fast.
Any suggestions/tips on how I can persuade my friend to get her first Android device (tablet)? She had budgeted to get a new laptop, but after looking around today, she has decided to go for a cheaper laptop which suits her needs, but will have extra $ to get a tablet.

If they are real itunes moves purchased from apple, then she's out of luck. Apple might let the mp3s purchased from them work on other devices, but videos are locked to apple products only. You need to verify that they're actual iTunes movies, and not just moves she watches through iTunes because that's just how she does it. If they're not DRMed movies, then she can just copy them to internal memory, or if she gets the keyboard dock just plug the 2TB drive in and go!
Hello everyone,
Like most I've been through the crapple period but now seen the light and all is Android now.
I've just sold on eBay my last apple hardware being my ipod classic 120 gig, this stored once jailbroken with Rock Box all my music in high quality format.
What I now want is to store all my files on a powered hard drive and use my Note or Tab 2 as a tool to connect and play the media by wifi.
Seen the Kingston unit that seems to fit the bill but it looks from what I've read that it's more designed for apples short comings, having once been bitten by buying a TV tuner that struggled with other operating systems as Apple orientated so I'm concerned.
Has anyone got experience using the Kingston wifi media reader with Android and can I ask:
Are you tied to the Kingston app to read files or will other file browsers do the job
&
Can you choose your own music player to play the files
Or can anyone advise me an alternative method to store 100gig high quality format for easy playback on my Android gadgets.
Hope I've explained my concern clearly enough.
Cheers, tj
I'm going away for a week on Monday and I was wondering if it was possible to somehow stream or share videos saved on my phone and play them on tablet?
I have a Galaxy S3 with 16GB internal and 16GB external storage and a Nexus 7 (2013) with 16GB internal storage
I've used up 80% of the storage on my Nexus with more soon to be used up with games and I have about 40% used up on my phone.
I would want to save the videos on my phone and then somehow share them with my tablet
When I'm out and about I always use my phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot for my tablet to connect to.
I've searched around on the web but I've never been able to find an answer.

Try ScreenShare app from Google Play Store. Available for free. There is one for your phone and one for your tablet. Install them on both your devices.

Thanks, I'll give it a go later on
I am in need of a new tablet, as my current Asus TF201 battery is dying. I really (initially) wanted the Nexus 9. Now, I'm not so sure. The max of 32 gb is a concern, my TF201 has that and is full, I also have about 10 gb of music on a 64gb sd card, which I can't use in the Nexus 9. I pretty much use the tablet for media consumption. When I travel I take my tablet instead of my Ultrabook. I really would like a Android tablet as I am invested in the ecosystem.
I am also leery of the Nexus 9 build issues. A friend bought 2 (one for him, one for his wife) and went through 3 before he finally gave up and bought a Ipad Air 2 for him and a Fire HDX 8.9 for her. He said he's never been happier with his choice. Playing with the N9 at Best Buy makes me leery. The Fire HDX seems to have better build quality. But I've heard the later N9 has noticeable improvements in this area. If this is true, I might sway back to the Nexus.
I like the Samsung Tab s 8.4, gorgeous screen, but it seems laggy and not very smooth. Plus TouchWiz is more annoying on a tablet, and Samsung seems to drop support for tablets quickly.
I am intrigued by the Nokia N1, but I need a tablet sooner rather than later, who knows when Nokia is going to release it Stateside.
I keep looking at the Ipad Air 2. I really don't want to go back to the Apple ecosystem, but I could if I had to. 64gb of storage seems about perfect for my needs. All the reviews on this are stellar, everyone praises the smoothness and better dedicated tablet apps. The downside is I would have to purchase lots of movies and games again. I don't think my Google Play movies will transfer to IOs.
My Asus TF201 has everything I need in a tablet, expandable storage, 32gb internal standard and when it was new, good battery life. I would not replace it other than the battery only lasts about an hour from a full charge.
I know this is an Android site, so asking for unbiased opinions is futile, but what would you do? Is there a device I am missing that would fit my needs?
Thanks for the help!
I know it seems like many people have complained about their Nexus 9 but keep in mind that there are also many of us who have had absolutely no problems. But you generally will not hear from people like us because threads titled "Everything is A-OK" aren't as interesting and those of us who are happy will probably spend more time actually use our Nexus 9 than to post online about it. I bought my Nexus 9 a few days after it's released from Best Buy and I haven't had any issues.
With that said, I was initially concerned about the storage as well but as of today I have not used more than 10GB of space at any given time. But unlike you, I don't have tons of music as I mostly stream them, same with movies and other media. I occasionally store 2-3 movies on the Nexus 9 when I know I'm going somewhere without Internet connection and it still fits everything. So if you can't let go of any of your local media and they won't fit, then stop pondering and get something else.

The Nexus 9 is a great device. If the 32gb concerns you I would suggest the Shield Tablet. It is a great device that gets frequent updates and has a microsd slot.

I'm exactly under this same scenario with deciding between the iPad Air 2 and Nexus 9 but honestly speaking there are several solutions to the Storage problem:
1. Using Dual USB for having another 32-64 GB of storage. Sandisk has some very good options and they even fit in your keychain. Here's a link of it: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Android-Smartphone-Tablet-SDDD-064G-G46/dp/B00HR7J3CA
2. Using Google Drive. I know this sounds strange but sometimes having local storage through google drive actually works and is much more beneficial but it all depends on your use.
Other than that sometimes even having micro SD cards isn't helpful to the OS so I would really recommend option 1 instead of spending about an extra $100 on the iPad Air 2 in a constricted OS.
Looking forward to your opinion.

This was my solution. Micro USB adapters or dedicated drives, like the one above, are incredibly cheap and offer plenty of flexibility.
I bought a Sandisk 32GB Dual USB 3.0 for my wife's Nexus 9 but have had no success in getting the Nexus 9 to recognise it.
I have activated 'USB debugging' in the Developer options. I have activated the 'MTP' option in the USB connection settings. The Dual USB works fine on my Galaxy Note 4 and all our other devices.
Any ideas on what I am missing?

I didn't want to root her Nexus. However your tip led me to another app that doesn't require root - Nexus USB OTG File Manager. That should do the trick.
