Hello All,
I am on tmobile and had samsung galaxy s before i got SGS2 from at&t (my wife upgraded). i unlocked/rooted the phone after reading through the posts and it worked like a charm!
My concern right now is that I am always on edge data network with tmobile. can anyone help me on this. Tethering is also not much of use when i am on the slowest connection. Please help.
Can't do much about it since AT&T version doesn't support the 3g/4g band for T-mobile.
At&t gs2 doesn't support t-mobile frequency for 3 g.

No only AT&T.
My guess is that international version supports all the bands not the carrier branded sgII
^Even international version doesn't support T-Mobile 3g/4g (HSPA+) network.. Not many phones support their network. Or maybe it will.. but not everywhere

The AWS (1700) bands are supported only by a handful of carriers. It doesn't exist at all in Europe and Asia. There's little reason for manufacturers to include it on their global phones as so few people use it. It's the reason the T-Mobile SGS2 has a Qualcomm chip instead of Exynos like the rest of them. After the merger, it won't even exist in the U.S. any longer as AT&T plans on using it (1700) for LTE. If you want versatility and the ability to use unlocked phones, change to AT&T.

In order to get T-mo 3G, a phone must support HSPA on 1700MHz AWS band, not 850MHz. As such, only phones from T-Mo or some Candadian carrier support 1700 band. Rest of the world use 900/2100 for 3G and AT&T uses 850/1900 for 3G/4G.
You are never going to get 3G on T-Mo on any phones from AT&T. Period. Give it up.

TMobile uses 1700 up, 2100 down. If the handset doesn't support 1700, you are out of luck.
Correct. Many phones support the 2100 MHz International band.
T-Mobile's network is weird though, and uses both 1700 and 2100 MHz at the same time.
My guess is that UMTS1700 support and not 42 Mbps HSPA+ is why the T-Mobile variant of the GS2 is such an oddball phone.
NO AT&T phone and only a small handful of international phones support T-Mobile's 1700 MHz band.
Similarly, only one or two T-Mobile phones (The Vibrant being one of them) support any of AT&T's 3G bands, but none support all of AT&T's 3G bands to my knowledge.
The interesting thing about this entire thing is that if you go into the modem band selection it lists 5 different wcdma bands including the aws 1700. I enabled those bands and tried using a tmo sim but alas it still only worked on edge. It may have just been there cosmetically rather then actually supporting aws bands. use dialer code *#2263# to access the band selection menu. Maybe there is a way to get it to work.

I agree with you and have tried exactly what you did (along with other bands) but still not working.

Typically, the s/w supports multiple versions of h/w. Just because an option's in the menu doesn't mean the h/w's available to support it. The same thing happened with the T-Mobile G2X. It was supposed to be quad-band, the option was in the ROM, but the radio wasn't there to support all the bands.
As posted on the XDA portal and several other sites, the Galaxy Note (ATT) can be modded to run on T-Mobile's 4G network.
I am trying to find out what other phones can do this, preferably out of the box, whether they are ATT branded or international GSM. I have seen listings on ebay that sell Galaxy Nexus GSM versions with claims of working on 4G network but I havent seen this confirmed anywhere.
What do I need to look for in a phone's specs regarding GSm and UMTS frequencies that will tell me if the phone can run on T-Mobile's 3G or 4G network?
I use phonearena as a source for phone specs and according to wikipedia, 1700 and 1900 but plenty of phones have those frequencies so the answer cant be that simple, can it?
I am thinking about trying to get an sgs iii and wondering if it is possible to get it on the $30.00 mo 100min unl data plan through walmart?
I have the exhibit ii on this plan, had it for a couple months, anybody know how I would do this?
If it will work with Tmobile band why not, best to ask the source. I don't think we have a Wal Mart rep guru here.

You have prepaid plan, you can put your sim into just about any unlocked GSM phone (and T-Mobile phones) and use it. If you want a good phone right now, get the Galaxy Nexus (GSM), it supports T-Mobile 3G (1700/2100 band). T-Mobile version of SIII will be coming later.
thanks for the responses, a Galaxy Nexus is probably a more realistic option than the sgs3 price wise, going to take a good look at it on the play store.

its true what theyre saying up there about "only having 2G", well i should correct myself, it WAS true. however recently T-Mobile has upgraded their 2100 band to 3G, as theyve been expanding. so it will work fine on Walmart's plan, as they use T-Mobile's network.
T-Mobile will come out with an SGS3 later in the year, for SGS2 it was 6 months behind the international version. the T-Mobile version will use HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100. what do more compatible bands mean? well it means if youre in an area you normally wouldnt get good 2100 band signal, you may get 1700 signal. if you live in the city, youll see no difference at all, its only when youre in rural areas.
so in short; you can totally use the i9300 SGS3 on tmobiles network, and yes, you will have HSDPA 3G

Could really use a source for this, please. Everything i've looked up has suggested that their HSPA+ is only 1700 and 2100, and that phones with only 2100 would not work.

you know what, i made a mistake, i was using this

looking at the bands the T-Mobile One S (along with all other tmobile phones) support, but the 900 band is just added to the phone so it can be used if taken abroad. so my mistake.
to reiterate the sgs3 will only work on 2g on tmobile, it will only work on at&t for 3g.

So I read around that the hack for the Samsung Galaxy Note I717 to get the LTE 1700mhz frequency working on T-Mobile (U.S.) and Wind/Mobi (Canada) is available.
My question is, would this or any hacks work on any LTE1700mhz band phone to work on AWS carriers running on HSPA mode?
Like the HTC One X AT&T version for example..

4G Network LTE 700 MHz Class 17 / 1700 / 2100
which is the same specs as the Note in terms of bands it uses...

Since Nokia does clearly say everywhere else except the US that 920 does support 1700Mhz (for obvious reasons), I wonder if the hardware in the AT&T version will be the same as in the int'l version and it'll just be a matter of unlocking the phone to use it on TMo.

Its now PentaBand WCDMA/HSPA+ at 42Mbps. They added WCDMA 1700Mhz band on the specs.
Originally when the phone was announced last month was listed as QuadBand WCDMA missing the AWS band at 1700Mhz.
If this is true it means one of the following:
1.The band was always there and for some reason software locked and they decided unlock it and release it as a PendaBand.
2.They listen to the complaints (pretty much the same way they did and released the Cyan Color) as the missing AWS band was one the biggest complaints especially from T-Mobile USA subscribers and they decided to include it as well.
3.It is just a typo and Lumia 920 is still QuadBand HSPA.
4.It was a typo from the very beginning and Lumia 920 was always PentaBand.
Now assuming the the phone is PendaBand HSPA+ it will perfectly work with T-Mobile USA current 3G at AWS and with the reformed Network at 1900 they are preparing. It will work with both at 42Mbps speed.
The original unlocked Lumia 920 listed the following 5 LTE bands 800 / 1800 / 2600 / 900 / 2100.
If the unlocked phone comes with those LTE bands will be incompatible with T-Mobile USA upcoming 4G LTE network.
However the American model which AT&T will carry exclusively has the following LTE bands 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
If Nokia also release an unlock/unbranded version of the American model with the above LTE bands and PentaBand HSPA+ this model along with the 42Mbps HSPA will also support T-Mobile's upcoming 4G LTE that coming mid of next year with theoretical speeds of 100Mbps.
Releasing this device will be the perfect option for T-Mobile subscribers as it will be future-proof for their upcoming LTE network.
I am curious to see whats really going on here. Meanwhile I am crossing my fingers. :good:

Unlocked/Unbranded version of the American model is the correct way of putting it.
Nokia used to have to versions of the unlock devices in the past. The regular version which was usually the European/International model and the NAM versions for North America.
Many devices came like that in the past including the N95 & N95 NAM, 5800 & 5800 NAM, N97 & N97 NAM etc.
All had QuadBand GSM and different bands for 3G, the NAM versions had the American bands for AT&T USA and Rogers for Canada.
Now that PentaBand is standard for 3G/WCDMA, they need to release (and I hope this is the case) the European Model with the European LTE bands and a "NAM" model with the American LTE frequencies.
I guess time will tell what exactly the case is going to be.
But again this is for LTE. Assuming that the information on the spec-sheet is correct and the Lumia 920 comes with WCDMA/AWS 1700 then it will work perfectly with T-Mobile USA and AT&T's HSPA+ at 42Mpbs.

Unfortunatly number 3 is the correct answer.
According to WPCentral.com the AWS 1700Mhz WCDMA support for T-Mobile 3G that listed in specs are just a typo on the website.
If this is the case, you can still use the Lumia 920 under T-Mobile 3G at 1900Mhz.
T-Mobile is reforming their Network and releasing 3G to 1900Mhz now, the problem is that we do not know what markets/areas has this already or how fast the project is moving on and when it will get complete..

That's wrong, because this phone will be using the Snapdragon S4 Plus (MSM8960) which uses Software Defined Radio (SDR) for determining their bands. Obviously you cannot use all at the same time, but any one at any time. The HW supports this (according to the Qualcomm reference design), and if it hasn't been supported before in this chipset, it's probably due poor modem programming and/or unstable behavior, and/or band/bandwidth throttling by service providers networks. It's also an efficient way to make sure your Verizon mobile cannot use AT&T networks and vice verse...

That is why I said its Number 3, according to WPCentral. I am aware of the SDR in the latest generation of Snapdragons, however as its name mention its programmable, meaning they may have turn off the AWS...
For me it doesn't make any sense to list the phone originally with QuadBand WCDMA and then add AWS and list it as a PentaBand.
I mean if it is wrong and its missing the AWS that is making the original listing with QuadBand the correct one, so why they bother changing it?
In the other hand if the SDR scenario applies and the AWS is already there, they may just heard the complains and simply turned ON the AWS band, that is why they added in to the specs meanwhile the Nokia representative that WPCentral reached may not be aware of the new specs yet...
All these are different scenarios, unless we have an official clarification from Nokia, we cannot know for sure until Lumia 920 its been released.
PS. Can you post the link with the detailed specifications of the Snapdragon S4 detailing the SDR? The specs I found does not include any information regarding this. If I am not mistaken and remember correctly SDR is affecting LTE only and its able to catch from 700Mhz - 2600Mhz (for LTE), its programmable to deliver everything between these bands but limited to deliver 5 Bands at a time. I do not remember mentioning WCDMA to be compatible with the SDR, but I may be wrong on that. Please feel free to correct me if that's the case.

I read that the FCC Documents for the AT&T model are mentioning AWS (1700) for LTE. This is normal as AT&T's LTE is operating also in AWS.
I didn't read anything regarding AWS for 3G/WCDMA.
If you read back, it specifically mentions wcdma 1700. Document differentiates between lte freqs and wcdma ones.
