curious if it is possible
I was interested in this as well. It looks like the contacts required to charge from the touchstone back don't exist on the phone. you'd have to solder contacts onto the pins of the usb port.

Of course it's possible, but it would not be very economically feasible. You would have to mount the magnets a certain way then make contacts on both the phone and the back. (Unless you want a wire on your cover.) Plus you would have to regulate the power going into the USB connection via bridge/filter. (Or risk it.)
I was really hoping for a better/easier solution. Thanks for the input
Lol. Forgot I had an account. Touchstone modder here.
First, see this post from a while ago on a test I did. Yes it is possible to use the touchstone (on most usb devices). If Govnah gives the correct readings, it should give about 500mAh of current (phone use, even standby will lower this amount. Consider it will get 500mAh if the phone is off). I will review this number when I get home... don't have a touchstone on hand. On vacation for one more week : ). Please copy the link.

Easiest way - if powermat releases a back door for the photon, rip out their internals and replace them with the touchstones.
Second easiest way - steal a right angle USB connector from the EVO or similar powermat back and wire it to the touchstone sticker. I don't own a powermat, but the angle connector simply looks to be the lowest profile micro USB connector. Put a case around your phone and hide the touchstone sticker in there.
PLEASE NOTE - if I remember the pre touchstone sticker and the pixi touchstone sticker have different +/- orientation. Be sure to test first
Hard way, historically done on the EVO 4g and other phones - solder the touchstone sticker to the internals of the phone.
When I say the touchstone sticker, I an referring to the sticker, coil and magnet combo removed from the palm case.
I have a herd of touchstone pucks at home. And in my car. I will absolutely get this working with no internal modification. It might require a $30 case just to steal the USB connector, but that option is up to you.
Why would you want to go through all the trouble if you don't own them already? The touchstone pucks are STILL $5 at verizon's web store... you could put them EVERYWHERE!!!! : D
I've done some work on this modification and hit a wall. I would welcome additional thoughts on this or the Androidcentral.com forum.
The positive and negative contacts were found. However, the voltage is different and this may be an issue.

I had to add some spaces to the URL below

Anyone know what the round connector on the left, inside the back cover is for? I assume some kind of antenna connection, just not sure.

I'm pretty sure it's a gps antenna connector.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
If its like the Captivate its a normal antenna connector, but if you plug anything into it, it will permanently disconnect your internal antenna.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
I was hoping it was a connector for an external antenna. That sucks that it will disable the internal antenna permanently!
That may not be true for the i777, but I remember several posts in the captivate forum of "I was bored and figured what the heck" leading to useless phones.
All the phones I have had that had ports like that, that were designed to be used, had holes with rubber plugs on the back plate. The fact there is no cut out over that port makes me think its something you don't want to actually use.

Edit:
You might be okay. See the note here (For i9100, but i777 should be the same):

Maybe a factory reset would have fixed the Captivates ...

Awesome!
Two questions if i may:
Is the 5.0 Wifi the exact same as the 5.0 US version?
It looks like the connector snaps onto the motherboard. How does it connect to the battery - is there hooks or straight solder??

Not sure about both question. Did not take much notice to be honest.
I have never seen tge us version so again not sure.
Is there any tricks or tools needed to pry open the back cover?
I've done the same to mine. You need to remove the two small screws by the micro-usb port, then use a safe pry tool to pry open the case.
I have a US Version, and my battery was hooked on, but easy to remove. As far as I know the battery is uniquely shaped on this device, but i have yet to see a galaxy note battery for myself.

There's 3 screws. Two by the USB under little white stickers, and one under the SD card door.
The battery is replaceable, it has a rectangular snappy connector onto the main board. Not soldered, just pull (carefully) to detach.

Hello
It looked that way from the provided images but my inquiry was about how the connector ribbon attaches to the battery? Or would a replacement battery come with a new connector ribbon already attached??
Does anyone have any experience with removing a damaged charging port/flex cable? I made a thread about a week ago saying that mine was messed up and one of the wire strip on the charging slot was broken, but and didn't allow it to connect to my computer for file transfer. I talked to ATT and they said the store couldn't do anything and that I would need to call in. I don't want to take the risk of a huge charge, and found a single order part here www.etradesupply.com/oem-samsung-galaxy-note-sgh-i717-charging-port-flex-cable-ribbon.html
It is cheap, and I have e removed the back of my Note before, and removed most of this piece except for the ribbon, and which I have no idea how to. Are there any resources out there to help me with this? I don't want to mess up a new part trying to install this one.
(PS how do I start a new thread on the desktop site? I couldn't find anywhere to do it and SwiftKey isn't faster than using a real keyboard on my PC lol. I am obviously new)

Has anyone tried replacing just the digitizer on our phones? My friend's LCD is fine, it's just the glass that is cracked.
On my old HTC HD2 the digitizer was glued to the LCD, so swapping it out was pretty tough. I'm wondering if it's the same for this phone.
So it didn't charge also?

Did you receive the part from that supplier? Was it the correct part? I ask because I need the same part for my Note. (Samsung told me that is not a part covered under warranty)

Just to follow up on my own post. I ordered the part, it arrived quickly, and it was DOA Waiting to hear from customer service now.
Be careful doing this I found the new part had the wrong antenna and my reception was gone afterward. Ended up replacing my phone because of that.

its took you that long to get the replacement port?
just replaced mine as well with the ebay one from ezletroniks(or something like that). $15 shipped, arrived in less than a week from California to Wisconsin.
Took around 10 minutes to replace. Charging up fine again which makes me very happy.
So it seems apparent that this is not a singular occurrence by any means, which is a little disheartening. But I just wanted to chime in and say that I'm currently on my 3rd charge port.
Fortunately, there's an awesome place a few miles away (I would trust the tech there with my life...he's fixed everything I've thrown at him thus far) that has been able to replace the part for me each time - but every damn time, it works perfect for about 2 weeks and then it goes back to the way it was before, which is always the same symptom: phone doesn't charge (or stay connected to the PC) unless I push the phone UP from back, and simultaneously push the end of the cable DOWN. And even then, sitting perfectly still, I get a sporadic connection.
Needless to say, the 2 extra OEM batteries/chargers (that you can charge just the battery with) and ADB over WiFi have become my best friends
So I'm wondering: (a) has anyone else had this problem multiple times like I have? And (B) has anyone else experienced the same thing as far as the "manual" method I have to use to keep it charging? I'm trying to, as much as possible, rule out the possibility that there's something else wrong with it
Replaced mine
Got the part, took about 15 minutes to replace. Hardest part was prying the bezel off the phone.
After replacing, putting it back together and making sure everything worked, I put the old port under a 30X loop to look at it.
on the board side, where the pins exit the plug, and go to the circuit boar, if you flex the port, I could see the pins LIFTING
off the pins on the board at the solder connection. If I had a micro solder iron & steady hand it would be a simple fix, but
since it took a 30X loop just to see it, and I don't have a micro iron, it was easier to spend less than 15 bucks, and 20 minutes
time to replace the thing :victory:

That's actually exactly what the repair shop told me was wrong with it...although I couldn't recall exactly until you said this. I'm pretty sure he's just re-soldered if each time, and never actually replaced the board.
So to a non-hardware person...is that problem due to faulty manufacturing/poor quality parts on the Samsung end? Or does that just end up happening to all devices with a MicroUSB connection as they get used?

I have a couple of guesses. One picture showed the connector was loose. It looks to me that the case tabs aren't soldered in. The other thing is I have one cable where the metal part sticks so far out that the plastic never touches the phone. It like sticking a screwdriver in the socket because you can wiggle the socket up and down. I now use a cable the plastic part touches the phone and doesn't wiggle the socket very easily. Wiggling any wire will eventually break it because of metal fatigue.

I know wireless charging is possible via the Touchstone method if I'm not mistaken, but if I recall, you're stuck with using that and only that. Is there a way to hack in wireless charging on the Note 2 with any charging pad such as that Fatboy pillow or the Nokia pads or anything with the Qi standard?
Also, can someone take a picture of the location of the wireless pins on the phone. I hear they're covered, and I just would like to see the back of the device.
Thanks in advance!
I am wondering the same thing. This is the first video I have seen which at least means we dont have to replace the usb charging board. You can see where he solders the leads. He says its a Qi back in the comments.

No, you wouldn't be stuck with charging only through the touchstone. I did this mod on my galaxy nexus and didn't have that limitation. I love the touchstone and I'm looking to find confirmation that someone has done this mod on the Verizon Note2...I see info about all the other versions but not this one. I'm assuming it's going to be similar to the Sprint version mod but don't know for sure. Please, if anyone has info on this mod for the Verizon Note2, respond.

Well I'm intrigued. I own the Verizon note 2, 2 HP touchpads, and 4 touchstone chargers. I love being able to drop the touchpad into the wireless charger and letting it go. To have this functionality with the note 2 would be to cool. I also have a fair amount of electronics knowledge. I'm pretty certain that once retrofitted, a device set up for wireless charging would work with any wireless charger as the principals of charging are all the same as I understand it.
One question that comes to mind.. is there really any difference in the make up of the note 2 circuit board between providers other than maybe the radio circuitry? If not then there isn't any reason why the mod shown in the video shouldn't work. Over the next couple of days I'll check into this and report my findings.
Anyone thinking about getting this?

That would be nice but we don't have contacts to line that up with... We technically do have the hardware their but I have heard a few horror stories about people not being careful and screwing up their phone trying to do the mod. Don't open case or you lose LTE/GPS

So I ended up buying the Qi charger on ebay along with a new chassis back (it was for the GSM variant) with the intentions of swapping backs and then having the holes to put the qi charger through. After MUCH hacking of the back, it worked, however I lost GPS, and 4G LTE. The chassis is just too different to work correctly.
I then put the Verizon chassis back, back on and used some copper tape to get the contacts to touch without the holes. Everything worked properly, but still no GPS or LTE.
I took it apart thinking I broke maybe one of the pins that use the chassis back as the antenna -still nothing. So moral of the story, don't take the chassis back off or the phone will be half of one. Its been about 4 days and going to various places in SF to see if LTE would come back on, but no dice.
Going to return this phone since its now broke (still 30 days) and next I will try and use the copper tape to put behind the actual battery contacts and NOT open the case at all.
Really wish VZ didn't take away this capability, as I already invested in the wireless charging stuff for my HTC Thunderbolt. Have a S3 and that works perfectly fine since the holes/pins are there.

You must have damaged something. You can take the back off without destroying anything - in fact you have to when you first get the phone since the battery doesn't come preinstalled.
Edit: never mind, didn't misread your post. But people have removed the chassis too - you still must have damaged it somehow.
