4.2 roms or TW 4.1 roms? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm not sure what to go with I've been running jelly beans build 9 for awhile and I love it. I came from the nexus so I know all too well what to expect from 4.2 roms. And I know that 4.2 roms don't have Any of the TW features.
I'm curious to see what you guys are running.

I'm on Jedi a TW base and love it.
I had the nexus too and flashed everything there was and I prefer this TW rom with all the TW features over anything I ever ran on my nexus.
Maybe miss all the customization available but not enough to go back to aosp for the time being.
Now if Sorcery is ever available for the the note 2 all bets are off! That Rom had everything but the kitchen sink in it. lol

Have tried Scotts, Beans, CM, Liquid, PA, AOKP...have settled on Carbon.

I miss some features from AOKP, but I can't give up multi window.

Stock rooted here. Tsf shell solves all my problems lol

Pics of Carbon? The screenshots portion of the OP doesn't even have screenshots, but it sounds interesting.

Been on Clean and Beans for from the start...tempted to try Carbon, but I am not sure I can do without some of the TW features. Love the pop up note when taking out the S-pen and the smart stay screen. How has it been on the AOSP roms? do you guys miss the TW stuff?

Once I used sourcery on my nexus I never flashed another ROM for it. Carbon is a lot like sourcery, but I couldn't get voice dialing over BT to work.
I was willing to put up with the crackling during BT calls, but not the lack of hands-free voice dialing.

There are options to give some of the TW functionality back, but I didn't try it so I can't report on how it works.

Good to know there are alternatives to some of the touchwiz apps...now I am really tempted. Is the flash process the same (wipe data, cache, dalvik cache), install zip from SD in TWRP and then flash gapps?

yes.. be aware that your sd card will have to formatted in fat32 though otherwise it won't be recognized in AOSP

...and windows 7 can't format fat 32 natively, you need another app to do it.

I have tried em all and always end up back on TW. Either Jedi or one of Scott's. I cant give up the S-pen and Multi-window. Seems like the battery is better also.

I'm confused with the interest in aosp roms when it breaks the distinctive characteristics of the note 2 - multi window, motion activated functionality and s pen. Even if all the other issues such as voice, bluetooth were to be solved, wouldn't it be still a worse user experience without some of these? Is there anything you gain besides the pure small footprint of the rom?

For me it's just about what experience I was looking for... Multi-window etc isn't that important to me. It was part of the buying decision for me but the novelty wore off and my focus shifted to light, smooth and fast... Ergo AOSP.

why do people ask for.pics of a aosp aokp rom?
what do you expect to see? theres too many variables, different launchers, lock screen options, you can change colors and icons...just makes no sense.

My guess is they want to see examples. Makes plenty of sense to me.
Otherwise, why the hell call it Carbon if its simply an AOKP compile?

I don't see why people don't just take a few (or all) for a test drive...see what works best for THEM

What's everyone's ROM of choice?

I'm not a flash addict, last flashed right after ICS release and looking to have another go.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
There is alot of personal choice out there. So many good Devs that put out great roms. I would read up on the dev forum on the different offerings each rom has and what your looking for as far as function and blingage
I'm a flash addict so I switch between cm9/cm10 and a deodexed debloated stock...although I'm finding fewer and fewer reasons to revert to stock ICS. (Although I do miss s note)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
I am partial to bigfau's {ROM}{& Stock Rooted, Zipaligned, Deodexed & CRTUCLF6} Official ICS, Pure & Odexed ...the "better version".
Why? It's stock with the nicities (?) I want and I can't think of anything that doesn't work.
Fast enough for me, rooted, i can use stock samsung apps like "s note" and calender, and modded tethering for the occasional connection I need.
I've been on this version longer than any other.

And to input my opinion, I am rocking BlackStar, it is pretty amazing. Lightning fast and the stuff just works.

You'll find everything in GooManager. That's an app in the market. Browse your compatible ROMs, and go into hotwires directory.
Using it myself and it is the sweetest of Googles line up so far. Camera is working perfectly now. Before, I was using King Kang, and I almost couldn't leave it. hoping Dagr8 can move it up to Jelly Bean

I am not a developer, but just someone who wanted an update for AOKP, and since we are no longer supported it didn't seem like that would happen.
I have put together an UNOFFICIAL update for AOKP by porting in some changes from another popular ROM that was recently discontinued **CoughO.a.TCoughLntCough08/29Cough**
I also threw in Nova Launcher, because it's may favorite, and the DPI is 132.
Usual disclaimer applies, do full wipes, install GAPPs, ect.

Didn't think I needed permission, I just used some stuff from his build of CM9 to 'update' AOKP. It is now my own creation... nobody has to download or flash it. Just wanted to share in the case anyone else wanted to try it too.

Are you having any problems with market compatibility? I am currently trying to get that under wraps, but was wondering if it was just me...
I pretty much side load everything anyhow, but want it to work well for others who don't.
Also, I have a version of Adobe Flash Player I could include that works great with the stock browser.

I do think adding flash to these Roms is a good idea. I know flash is working its way out but there are still many sites and things that use it.
I Too tried your rom and unfortunetly for the short period it was on my tp it ran great. I keep reverting to CM10 even tho there's no sound. I still like the feeling of having JB on the TP. Thanks.
Wanted to say thanks to anyone who has installed this ROM as I am really interested in taking the next step into Compiling ROM's myself, and it's great to have some interest.

As for market compatibility, I just noticed now that I am having some compatibility issues... did you modify the build prop, or is it on account of the DPI settings, would you say?
I'd be interested in seeing your flash adaptation, as for me, I use the market flash player patched va Lucky Patcher to allow Hulu on mobile devices. How does yours differ?
Thanks again for the mash-up, and if you gots the time, I would love to see more from you.
Cheers!
EDIT: so dpi had nothing to do with it.... exploring other options. I'll weigh in more if I figure anything out.
Yea, the only change in the build prop was the build name and DPI.
Unfortunately my touchpad is going on a trip without me for a while so I am not going to be able to experiment.

Figured something out with compatibility.... Set the DPI to 120, clear market cache, reboot, load the play store, accept the terms, reset DPI to 132, and reboot.....
Just don't clear market cache, now.... lol, or no more compatibility.
Also, I've been having a SOD issue with the ROM..... any suggestions?
Cheers!

If anyone's interested, set the DPI back to 160 via Rom Control or Rom Toolbox. Fixes compatibility. I'd rather have 132, but its just not worth the fight.

Love how smooth this is and love the fact that it's running out of the box at 245 DPI.
After switching to a smaller DPI, going back to 320 just doesn't match the Note 2 AT ALL.

Incorrect. They've stated they're based on AOSP and sharing features as found useful in their roms

More choices is always a good thing, and more people working on a device is also a good thing as it tends to speed up solutions to problems. While I am not an AOKP user I definitely am glad to see them working on this device.
Wow this is great news! On my Gnex I been running AOKP exclusively. Can't wait!

Well as a previous Gnex user, the stock G2 rom feels really good. I recommend reading the tips and hidden secrets thread. It feels like LG took an AOKP build and used it as reference for the stock rom.
AOKP seems to be based off 4.3.1 now but is also starting to incorporate lots of the cool tricks the G2.

Coming from a long-time AOKP user on my GNex, using it honestly felt like a step backwards from rooted stock with Xposed and other tweaks. The fact that Netflix is not working on our AOSP 4.3 roms was the death blow for me. Not sure if that will be an issue with official AOKP or not but I honestly prefer LG's ROM with tweaks as of right now.
Can someone explain to me why people like AOKP so much? I have admittedly only used it once, but I didn't find it to be that great. It was slightly buggy and I didn't notice any great benefits.
I hope they use the power widget... I don't see any aosp Rom use this for our phones and I HATE the quick tiles

That's because you didn't look through it. AOKP gives you pretty much every known tweak there is on Android. It's what CM used to be. You can create some very beautiful setups using AOKP.
Though I do agree that I am enjoying the Stock Rom after flashing a few mods. I'm not using Xposed but still got my phone to a good stop where I'm very happy with it.

Well from what I experienced on the GNex they dont release a Rom unless everything works
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
yeah surprisingly the stock rom on this is not bad and you can modify it which made me wonder if they used a custom as a template?
I hate to admit this as well, but I'm going to be flashing back down to a LG based 4.2.2 ROM either tonight or tomorrow and really tear into it and see what madness I can do. Question. Does anybody have an app already compiled that fully decompiles apks (smali, xml, etc?) or know one? I don't have a PC at the moment. Otherwise I'll have to head to the computer lab where I graduated college from and build a simple app myself that let's me choose an app, decompile it into a directory, then the option to recompe once done (and resign if not system app). The signing part isn't even needed as Steven's SignapkTool should still work.
Just wondering. It's possible as Matt does it in his Privacy Blocker app. If it didn't force close when I tried to run it I'd try to just piggy back off of that after locating where he stored the temp decompiled files at. But thst wouldn't touch system apks.
I can't stay on CyanogenMod as phone calls are horrible. I'm lucky to make it 3 minutes before getting disconnected. I won't comment on AOKP as It's not out on VS980 yet. We need updated files from LG.. As in an official 4.3 and 4.4 release. I remember the same problems back on the OG DROID, but I'm excited to see what they bring. And yes, they do merge code from separate sources as I saw a weather mod I made for some friends that I released on another site show up in a later release. I wasn't credited, and somebody else created a thread on it on the other site taking credit. I didn't care as thise who know knew.. They removed it a few releases later.
Edit: And when I left the GNex, the were at 4.2.x and starting over from scratch for 4.3 so shouldat least be iinteresting.

looks interesting...

this rom looks truly amazing. i actually like it more than miui. however theres just too much chinese. and i cant get.into. mobile networks and a couple other settings without getting this FC.
VERY hard to navigate with the chinese. initial setup youre flying blind through some menus you cant make heads or tails of.
definitely has potential though.

I really like the looks of this ROM.its a totally different ui and it isn't miui.
Is there anyway to get less Chinese? Or is that just how it is since it's a Chinese ROM? I don't want to sound like a cry baby @Tquetski I'm only jw. I appreciate your work on these ROMs. I think this one has some real potential. Its really cool looking

After stability is worked out I'm going to translate it properly
I want to adjust things a little because I feel that this deserves proper localization
APN settings will always produce a FC but it doesn't matter honestly; 4G still works and sticks through reboots lol; I'm doing a really invasive thing and forcing this firmware to use the S4 APNs, it was not made for the S4 ;x
Alright so 4g does stick on reboots. It took my phone maybe 5 minutes for 4g to show up but once it did I was good.
Kept getting the settings FC when trying to enter GMail Account (backup account) but just kept closing it and finally went away. Tapatalk kept FC though [emoji35] I'm back on my DD as I'm off too work. I'll play with ColorOs when im home later.
PS. I tried flashing supersu to have root and no dice any suggestions

Thanks. I think it is great devs put out great ROMs for the end user. I really do think the OP's should be more informative though. At least tell us what will work and what is compatable. This ROM is not the only one with very little information, some of the big names are very vague as well. I am new to the S4 and come here looking for ways to optimize my phone, it would be nice to have reliable information posted in the ROM details how to install.

I understand your frustration. I think the devs who have a rom that works for multiple devices/carriers just forget about the few phones/carriers that do have limitations like that.
Check this thread out. Lot of good information to get you going

Sure let me go back and edit 30 threads with a device specific FAQ to cover the general issues which will take a while for me to garner because I only own 1/30
Meanwhile if someone wants to adb their stock firmware for me I could maybe make some stuff you could use with safestrap, but when I make this offer it never pans out because very rarely does someone want to actually get their hands dirty
I can install this rom based kitkat, I had safetrap?
