So, I disabled the media scanner because it's a pain in my ass and lags my phone for 5+ minutes @ boot because of a 32 GB SD card - Took a picture, gallery didnt see it, ran media scanner and gallery sees it, but now, the problem I have is with Viber - IT calls its own gallery process, and I cold rebooted my device with media scanner on - Stupid app still doesn't see the pic I took. Using Term Emu, how would I run the process for media scanner? Have busybox/ su already - Device Boost Mobile Samsung Replenish

Samsung SGHT-959, stock Froyo.ka6 rooted.
A funny thing happened to me while adding some D64 images to play with Frodo C64 on my vibrant.
Media Scanner started and where it used to take just under 60 seconds was now taking close to 10 minutes to complete! WTF?!?!
Ok fine, I deleted the 4 files I added, same thing, Media Scanner frozen at 0% for 10 minutes. I have a total of 30 media files on my SD card combined ( I use Ipod touch for music & vids) so there was no reason for the scanning to exponentially increase in scanning time when all I did was add 4 non-media files. Rebooted, no change. Deleted all data from DCIM/.thumbnails from internal phone memory & SD, no change. Others recommended factory reset but then I have to re-install all apps - what a drag!!
I searched here & Google and noticed that the Media Storage service is responsible scanning - I went into application manager, running applications and noticed that Media Storage data was at 95+MB and rising! I don't even have 95MB worth of media on this phone! I force closed which STOPPPED media scanning (yay!!!) and cleared the data. I rebooted. The media scanning took about 30 seconds total!! I went to Media Storage and the data is now at 212KB which sounds about right considering what I have on this phone.
I have read that ringtones disappeared then later re-appeared, didn't happen to me, my guess is the noobs didn't wait for media scanner to reach 100%. Yes, I did have to go and reset contact ringtones (I didn't have that many) and I have read that you will lose playlists. Since many of you are running hacked roms I imagine you are also using a different media player as well so this shouldn't be a problem.
There are workarounds such as running Media Scanner on demand, probably a good solution for those of you with tons of media that use stock music player and playlists:

This is obviously a bug in the Media Storage service and something to be aware of..Anyone know if this is fixed in Android 3.x?
You can also go into recovery and format the sd card there or in adb
According to what I read in various threads here in XDA that doesn't help. I have read that it's normal for media scanner to take a long time if you have thousands of media files on your SD so that didn't apply to me.
Somehow Media Storage service doesn't properly flush out it's internal data cache causing to increase in both size as well as time needed to scan. I flushed it out manually and that solved the problem. Media Storage is an indexing service for all media on your phone so either the service locks up under certain conditions or the database doesn't purge properly. This affects all versions of froyo.
Besides I don't need to go into ADB or recovery to format the card, I can do it right from the settings.
Right, im on 2.3.3 with my X10, and ive noticed in the battery usage section in the menu that something called media has 21% so far, even though ive not used any media at all, and in 38 mins from being fully charged im down to 85% battery lol.
Anyway this media thing says when i click on it
Cpu total 11mins
Cpu Foreground 6mins
Keep awake 7 mins 54secs
included packages, DRM protected content storage
Downloads,
Download manager
Media Storage..
So out of all that anything i can do to stop this?
Do you have many media files (music, photos etc?) on your card ?
It might be that the media scanner kicked in to index / search around. If this is the case, maybe this post could help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15037379&postcount=35

aye i do, quite a few pictures and alot of music on there, But nothing changed so im not sure why it scanned again, plus it ate the battery like mad from a fully charged battery to 85%
No software is perfect...
In my case, the scanner hogged the CPU the first time I booted the phone after update, gallery worked very very poorly, freezes, etc. Eventually it finished and now it seems ok.
If it keeps doing it, just reset, and if it insists - just add a '.nomedia' file and it should not scan the big folders anymore. Please read more about .nomedia file limitations here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=626997
Right cheers for that, ill give that a shot and see what happens, was just annoying to see my freshly charged battery disapear lol
Does anyone know how to disable the media scanner, that runs on every boot?
I don't want to uninstall it, because sometimes you'll need to run it manually to detect new media files, but I don't want it running on every startup
I thought it was necessary so it can see what you have on your SD card?

Is this your first samsung phone? It always runs at the start by design in every samsung android phone, as far as i know there is nothing you can do about it unless a dev can find a way to change it in a custom rom.

Media Scanner is a process and just like any other process it either runs as a service, or invoked by some init.* startup script. I'm simply asking for guidance how to modify phone configuration to disable the startup of this process.
Contents of /sdcard are cached, so the only price you pay if it doesnt run is that it wont see any changes, occured since it was last active. If you dont add/remove files on your phone all that frequently - disabling it wont have much impact and it will noticeably improve startup performance
Back in the captivate days there was a script that as created to disable this but it proved to be more of a hinderence than a help, I don't recommend it. But if you really insist search the threads over there and see if you can find it. Who knows it may work maybe with a mod here or there
Rescan Media Root from the Market will disable the media scanner.
iirc Nitrality in the market can disable media scan too

I disagree. I added a 32 GB card a few days ago, nearly full with songs, and my time from power button to lock screen didn't change at all. Yes, the scan takes a while and doesn't finish until well after the lock screen appears but it is a background process. It doesn't prevent you from using the device.

Can you use the camera though?
I too have a 32 Gb card installed with a mixture of films, music and apps. My media scanner can take 2-3 hours to run and whilst I can use the phone for most things, it does prevent me from viewing photos and more critically taking photos.
I have on numerous occations not be able to take photos of the kids doing something funny, hours after unplugging my Note and it is very inconvenient at work when I need to take a photo of a business card or reciept or something.
To me this is a serious flaw on a device which is, as much as a phone, my on the go camera - and not a welcome feature of my first android phone!
I have tried a couple of methods (apps) but most of these seem to fill my notification area with adverts!

Wow. Could there be somethinks wrong with your sd card? Have you switched it from using on one device for a while to your note? I have 23gb out of 29 gb available filled with 10gb of that being music and 3gb of pics and my start up media scan takes about a minute max. Maybe not even that long. I initially had a 16gb card that i used in my LG thrill that when i switched to the not would take forever to scan. It eventually quit working so i bought the 32 and no problems now.

2-3 hours is ridiculous.
What class card are you using? You may need to upgrade to a faster card.

Run this in Terminal Emulator or Adb Shell:
Code:
su
pm disable com.android.providers.media.MediaScannerReceiver
an app can help you
You should try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753294
You can use System Tuner to disable it from starting up at reboot

I have used this in the past....but requires root.
But i do agree maybe an upgrade of your sd cards class...

I suggest formatting your card or replacing it. Bad sectors can cause funny stuff to happen. I couldn't even copy files using a card reader till I formatted it. Warning. This will erase all you files from the card, but you will have a clean slate to start.

Before erasing put the card in an adaptor and copy your stuff to a pc.
"oh yes it does..."

Well,on my NOTE, I cannot use the camera until Media Scanner Runs off round the corner - if I just unlock my phone (even when it is on) to take a photgraph, then I get this annoying message and the camera turns itself OFF repeatedly... finally the photo opportunity has gone... buggerit!

Hey guys,
Everytime i keep restarting the phone there seems to be a media scanning bug in ICS XXLPQ, takes a lot of time to scan and meanwhile doesn't allow the Gallery to be opened... Can you please help me out here.. Thanks guys

It's not a bug, it's supposed to scan your internal and external SD storage for new files everytime you restart the device...
Yeah !!!! But still when i was in Gingerbread... It used to be so quick... But now it's soooooo slow even grand mum can run faster than that !!!!1
Hmm, mine only takes about 3-5 seconds, but I only have a 2GB external SD card and practically nothing stored on either storage medias. How long does it take?
For my x-Gingerbread it takes about 3 or 4 seconds
For my current Ice cream sandwich it takes about a 30 and half seconds lol...
Crap !!!
i think thats a kernel thing as the kernals and roms stabilities increase they will be then able to tweak the performances like the batteries which are good and a lot better than they were.
It's got nothing to do with the kernel optimisations, I'm running a stock setup and media scanner is quite fast (with plenty of files in both internal and external storages). Remove the media scanner database to force a fresh re-scan or use one of the tools mentioned in my post here.
So a bit of background. I'm running:
ROM: [ROM][AOSP][JB][4.1.2][JZO54K] SuperNexus - I777 - BUILD 5
Kernel: Siyah - JELLYBEAN - ICS [v4.3.3]
Currently phone is telling me media is 82% of my usage and I have absolutely no clue what that could be. I'm not downloading anything.
I've had the battery for over 1+ year so I know I'm due for a replacement but this usage rate seems ridiculous.
Any thoughts? Thanks friends.
Media scanner going crazy. Download an app from the play store to stop it from acting wonky. Yes u can find the name of the app. I believe in u.
Yeah one night my media scanner went crazy and made my phone feel like it was about to melt. It was draining the battery on the charger. I didn't download an app to stop the media scanner but I don't see it scan anymore. Now I just use an app/widget that scans when you press it.

Had this problem a long time ago..
Try adding a blank file named .nomedia on the internal and sd card root...
That fix it for me. Good luck there hope this helps

I had that issue, media scanner would not stop. I took my 32 GB SD card out, moved the files I needed, reformatted it (didn't use quick format, did it the long way), stuck the files back, and put it back in the phone. Now no more media scanner running always. I had read somewhere that the file structure on the external media card could get messed up causing that issue.
