Usually just people who don't know too much about rooting and such and think jailbreak and root are the same.
On a side note we now do jailbreak Android.

I personally think that root being called root is annoying.
You don't add root to a phone, nor do you root a phone. You unlock access to the root user.
Well, let's coin a new term. Any idea's?!

Since Adam is the name behind unlocking the bootloader, he started calling it jailbreak due to the fact that there are now legal issues with "unlocking." Yes we all know the legal issue with unlocking is about unlocking to use on a different carrier. To make it easier for people to understand that he is not involved in unlocking carriers, we now jailbreak.

But it is not the same. Jailbreak is to make a device be able to accept sideloading applications. Android doesn't need to do this. So there is no jailbreak for Android.
Unlocking, though now illegal, is not jailbreaking (making a device to accept sideloading apps).
Calling unlocking "jailbreak" is just adding the confusion with less techy people.

So annoying. There are lots of questions on Android forums now about jailbreaking Android. But there is no jailbreak in Android, because we have the sideloading settings within our settings menu (Settings > Security > Device administration > Unknown sources).
Calling unlocking a device with the name of "jailbreak" is just adding the confusion with the less techy people.
What really they are asking is "how to root my Android device".
But they need to understand is what root really is. And what it is to have administration permissions in any Unix/Linux, including Android. Only then they will stop calling root with the name "jailbreak".

You got me. The only thing I am doing is questioning the logic of "educating" people by posting on the second page of a device specific thread, and how that is going to lead to real change for the entire Android development community that isnt limited to just XDA. Especially when its just a hobby to 90% of the community.

Alright here comes my subjective take on this whole jailbreaking Android devices thing.
Do I hate it? Yep.
In my 3 years on Android and gaining root privileges on various devices I have never seen it referred to as jailbreaking, until I got this Note 2. Now I see it everywhere in the Android scenes.
Another thing I noticed is that with the Note 2 never have I seen so many iDerps come on the forums professing their new found relationships with Android and how they broke up with iOS. This thread can be considered useless but my God are those iConvert threads the Queens of Useless Threads. Why does anyone give a s*** that you converted to Android? Really?
Point being made here is that with the influx of iDolt users converting to Android there's an uncanny correlation with their terminology starting to crop up more and more.

I guess I need to get more tech savvy because I thought when I was buying and selling I phones (those things are gold) I wrote to and modified system files. I thought to accept the gevy unlock it psyched and changed system files. I guess I'm wing though because jail breaking is only for side loading apps.
Oh and we don't need that please tell me how to add Google wallet without root. By the way you know att blocked unknown apps before. So I guess then we did jail break or phones?

This is incorrect, unlocking the bootloader is not illegal, unlocking for other carriers is but that's not what this thread is about.
I don't see why it matters what you call it. Break it down and the words works.
Jail break. To remove restrictions and become free. Isn't that what we did? Removed a restricted boot loader to allow custom kernels and recovery which allows custom Roms.
Stop trying to be politically correct on this. If you're feelings are hurt over a simple word then your life must be depressing.

Before you educate others you must first learn it for yourself, unlocking the bootloader is not illegal, and you don't root your phone, you gain root access.

Android 4.0.x was ICS. The newer version is 4.1.X called jelly beans. So you'd be basically downgrading if you went to ICS.
Rooting is done to allow you adminstrator priveliges in Linux, similar to being an administrator in Windows rather than a standard user. You don't need to be rooted, most of the thing can be done without rooting. However, as you continue to use your device, you will often find apps that require changes in the system, hence their requirement will be to be rooted. Trying out different ROMs, customising it so that your wife/gf doesn't recognise your device will P) require you to root your device. For most devices , its pretty simple to root. However, you will learn as you read through posts and threads, and watch videos. Welcome to the Android world!

Yes, 4.1 is Jellybean but ICS is a downgrade. It came before Jellybean so you're better off sticking with JB.
It's not a requirement to root your phone but it's great because it gives you complete control of the phone. More control than the phone companies want us to have.
But I would suggest that you don't concentrate on rooting just yet. I say this because you're new to Android and trying to learn too much too quickly can become really confusing.
Before you even think about being ready to root, use these forums and read up about rooting and you'll learn everything you need to know.

My phone, after I did a check, is running 2.3.6, which is Gingerbread right?
Ok thanks for the replies. It was informational
Anyway, if I were to root the phone, every different version has its own process to root right?
For example if I am running 2.3.6, and root it.. After I do a upgrade to ICS, I would have to re-root right? Am I getting this right?

Yes that's Gingerbread.
The bit you're wrong about is the rooting bit. Rooting a device doesn't allow you to update to ICS when you couldn't before. If all you want to do is update to ICS then you don't need to root, you just need to look into flashing the device. When flashing it puts a whole different eom, kernel, theme etc onto the device.
You'll be better off looking that up through threads here on XDA or by watching videos on YouTube to show you how to do it. That's how I learnt to do it all.

That depends. If you root your phone, and YOU perform the upgrade, i.e. you flash a modded rom, 99.9% of the time the dev who created it will add the su(superuser) app into the rom so that you end up flashing the rom and re-rooting your phone in the process.
With that being said, if you happen to receive an OTA update randomly, telling you that android needs to update, and you decide that's what you want to run, flashing that one WILL take away your su privileges. That is due to the fact that these OTA's are pushed out by your phone manufacturer, and what you are trying to do (gain su access) isn't what the manufacturers wants you doing, per say, so THEY don't include the su app. Happy hacking. Number one tip I could give ya: don't b afraid to Google every question, or topic you're interested in. Make Google your best friend.

After reading about how Android 4.3 and beyond will change root and the new device manager boots the phone into recovery.....and I'm sure that it won't wipe with a custom recovery. I'm guessing our days of crack flashing will come to an end in the future. Hopefully Google will find some ways to keep security in line and also stay friendly to the Development community.
There have been many devices put out that the manufacturers had declared unrootable that ended up rooted.

Doesn't the new device manager run once the OS is booted?
Also, I don't think Google has any interest in blocking root and the development community. Look at their devices and play store: all of their Nexus and GE products are unlocked and their play store allows rooted apps. I think you're being paranoid.

Hi,
I went through all the form to root my S4 verizon(unlocked) but nothings related to MG7 baseband??
my baseband version is MG7 is it different than others?? i coudnt find any post related to this version
Main problem is KNOX security is installed in my phone in system directory,
KNOX preventing me from root access(when i tried super user app i am getting a notification ""An application has been forced to stop for an unauthorized attempt to access system in your device"),
so i tried to uninstall the KNOX but I need a root privilage to uninstall it. I stuck in the loop.
after I found to bypass the KNOX I should use the certified application to get into root. (i may be wrong i am not sure) is their any way for me to root and install cynagenMod ?? or if helped in uninstalling KNOX i can root it.
Thanks in Advance.

Maybe some sort of test build? Did you purchase the phone used? Generally S4 build numbers have followed a pattern. The second letter generally indicates a date, I believe. That's why MDK was most likely a May 2013 build, ME7 was a June 2013 build, etc. So this may be somewhere in between ME7 and MI1. I would say this device could be a rare gem and may even provide more information towards a BL exploit.

There was a reason they didnt release this build. It would be helpful to know why I need to analyze the bootloaders from this build. I hope you read this soon and above all else do NOT update your phone!

I guess @Surge1223 can send you pm's on how to extract the needed files to find more about your bootloader. He could probably write a script for you.
@Surge1223 he had asked me couple hours ago how to pm you. So if you guys arent already in contact maybe shoot him a message.

Hey guys! So, just a quick recap of my life with my Verizon Galaxy S4: I got it back in June and rooted it (using "I545ALL-IN-ONE-TOOL") within a couple hours of having it up and running. It is my first Android phone. I then disabled the service that persistently alerted me of Android updates (so that I would keep my root). I now would like to update to KitKat.
Currently, here are my phone's software specifications (I apologize if I include unnecessary information!):
Model number: SCH-I545
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: I545VRUAMDK
Kernel version: 3.4.0-562219
Build number: JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK
I am just kind of lost as to how I would go about updating to KitKat. I would like to keep TouchWiz, because I use the IR and Camera features, as well as a few other things here and there that I would miss if I lost.
Finally, once I'm up to TouchWiz KitKat, I would like to root it, so I could disable/remove some bloaty parts of TouchWiz and just the general perks of rooting.
I have tried to look through the stickies a few times to find out how to do it on my own, but I kinda got confused.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, and let me know if any further information is needed.

I would suggest simply flashing Echoe since you're on MDK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2702592

What is the "Echoe" thing then? It says it's pre-rooted, and is 4.4.2.

Since you have an original MDK S4 you should just root it , install a custom recovery, then you can flash all sorts of ROMs Touchwiz or AOSP.
Is your phone rooted? If so do you have a custom recovery?
Root your phone using this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290796
Then since you appear to be new at this I'd suggest just using Goo or Flashify to install your custom recovery
Here's Flashify https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify
Then learn how to make a backup in recovery and do that.
Then look around these forums for whatever ROM best suits you.
There are KitKat Touchwiz ROMs that you can install that come from the International S4.

By the way I just over looked the part where your already rooted so my bad... Its early what can I say.
Anyways here is the link to a patch we use to enable us to run international S4 Touchwiz 4.4 ROMs .

jrkruse has made a flashable version of the verizon leak: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721118
So that's probably the best option now for stock-kitkat. If you don't have a custom recovery, the easiest way would be to use goomanager and simply use 'install openrecoveryscript' from the options menu.
So, I've been having one hard time figuring this out. It seems to be hard to find, or I'm not looking for the right things, so I come seeking your help.
I have a Galaxy S4 (obviously, lol), here's all about it:
Model Number: SCH-I545
Android Version: 5.0.1
Baseband Version: i545VRUGOF1
Build Number: LRX22C.I545VRUGOF1
Can someone tell me if I can root it or not? Towelroot and Kingroot do not work for it. I'm guessing that's because the software is still too new. So, might it just be that there is no root for it yet?
If so, is there anyway I can get rid of the bloatware (it's so frustrating!)?
Thank you in advance!
If on stock OF1, no there is no root for it, and no downgrade options either, as bootloader was updated and locked anything below OF1

That is correct, look at the last 3 letters in your build number.

I HAVE GALAXY S4 I545 WITH 4.4.2 NK1 FIRMWARE i downloaded of1 update from sammobile.com and not instlling it because i m afraid it may lock network i m in pakistan please confirm it lock network or not please
There is no root for OF1 so the bootloader is locked on OF1, if that's what you're asking.
supposedly this thing SRS ROOT can do it but it can't root mines. Though, the computer reads out that it does.
I used the kingroot no pc apk download. [
It worked fine for me
Yep, use kingroot.
I found that last night that KINGO ROOT is working on sch-i545 build VRUGOF1.
Link for future reference. The old method is better imo. Root is possible with kingroot but didn't work when i swithed to supersu
You have to use kingroot to grant a terminal su permission, then uninstall kingroot, and lastly install SuperSU via the terminal. Google it for a more in-depth walkthrough. I did it in 5 minutes sitting in my car. SuperSU is better, and it plays nice with more apps. Good luck! Message me if you need a link.

if you just bought the phone and you was like *oh yeah, now I can customize the **** out of him* that must be a big disappoint like me you can't do **** with the device :d until the deves unlock it but if that even will happend .... just hopes
My sister in law just jumped from an iPhone to a Verizon Galaxy S4 (i545VRUGOF1) on Android 5.0.1
I'm currently with Tmobile on an S6 (rooted etc.) and have been since the S3 so I am accustomed to rooting etc. However, the root procedure for the Tmobile variant is obviously different.
Anyways, she wants me to root hers and so far as I can tell Kingroot is said to work and I can then remove it and replace with SuperSU.
My question though is what recovery works with this variant? I'm a TWRP guy myself but it doesn't sound like flashing TWRP via Odin will work with this Verizon S4.
Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks and rock on...
Ahhh, the lollipop update irreparably locks the bootloader so you can't even sideload twrp. Sorry man, but you're stuck. You can still root it tho...piece of cake. Use kingroot, then replace it with SuperSU. Instructions are in the link: http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html?m=1

I read a few posts that alluded to it being possible to flash the Kitkat firmware via Odin. Yay or nay?
Sent from my SM-G920T using XDA-Developers mobile app
Oh dear. I recall being able to reflash the bootloader etc on a g3 using Odin...to roll it back...but that was over a year ago. About the s4...probably not. Worst case, you brick it. Otherwise it just won't boot. In other words, I would be really surprised. I'll think about it and let you know if I remember anything. The best way to confirm or negate would be to Google it.
The only reason they were rolling back to KitKat was to root it early in the lollipop stages, I think. The bootloader was already and permanently upgraded. -I think. I'm tied and groggy right now...
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yeah I was Google it but couldn't find anything concrete. It would seem to work and I doubt a hard brick would ensue. A soft brick could be recovered using Kies or smartswitch though in most cases. Thanks
