In hopes of getting the OTA, I un-rooted using the VooDoo rootkeeper. Other than rooting it, I am stone cold stock...
Is this sufficient to accept the OTA? (or get the OTA without an error?)

Yup.
The file that gives you problems while updating is /system/su-backup Voodoo delete it.
You're ready to go.

I'm a little confused because this question is posted a couple of different ways in a couple of different threads . . . some with conflicting answers.
I'm running stock rooted GB. No custom recovery installed. I also have Voodoo's root keeper installed and since I know I'll lose root after the OTA, I'll likely just use voodoo to temp unroot and then delete the 'su-backup' file in /System. That's it . . . ready for the OTA, right?
If yes, my next question is: if I have to delete the 'su-backup' file to get the OTA then I obviously can't use Voodoo to restore root after the OTA. I might as well just uninstall it then, shouldn't I?
Finally, if I'm running stock rooted GB with no custom recovery installed and I delete the 'su-backup' file (or uninstall Voodoo all together for that matter), do I need to unroot to receive/install the ICS OTA when it comes? Forgive my confusion about the notion I have to unroot to receive the OTA. Coming from an LG and there, the OTA didn't care if you were rooted. It only cared that you had stock recovery. Will a rooted system on a Maxx really stop the OTA push?

Should've used the 'delete su backup' button in the app before unrooting.
If I re-root... I can delete, but then I can not unroot?

I don't think so. I think the su-backup is there to allow you to reroot after unroot. In other words, if you delete the su-backup, you should still be able to use the app to unroot. You just wont be able to use the app to reroot after the ota.
Don't see that as a problem since the devs have and/or are sitting on ics root methods.

oh, i read that this file was necessary to re-root after OTA update,
can we copy it to sd card or so and use it after OTA update coz as per u, we will lose root access after OTA ?

I'm not sure if the app will find the file on the SD card. Is it worth moving, unrooting and rerooting before the OTA just to test? I'm not sure about that either.
For me, I'm quickly zeroing in on the only reeason I'm keeping Voodoo installed is for the unroot feature once the OTA begins to be pushed. If the answer to my question above is root alone (i.e. no custom recovery) won't prevent the OTA from installing, I'll likely uninstall it sooner.
Once the OTA hits, it's pretty safe to asume there are/will be "not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6 . . . " root methods for ICS available the same day.
At this point I'm less concerned about rerooting after the ICS OTA than I am about voodoo stopping the OTA from being installed.
To date and after 4 different phones; DroidX, Bionic, Razr, Razr Maxx I have yet to worry about taking an update while rooted.
A rooted phone will take the update, a phone with Voodoo OTA will take an update.
As long as you have not removed apps and aren't on a custom ROM, root has no effect on any OTA updates. The OTA doesn't look for root and stop. It looks for what should be there, not what should not.

Well I'm sort of a "noob" to this stuff myself, but logic would tell me that if your phone was in a state not to be able to obtain the "pushed" or "pulled" ota, then you would never have gotten it. In short, if you were able to download it, then yes, you should be able to install it. And being rooted won't affect that, but I believe you will lose the root anyway during the update.
Yep! I was able to upgrade by simply using voodoo to temporarily unroot then apply the OTA. Voodoo was able to restore root and conformed with root checker.
ICS isn't living to expectation so far.
Done.
Did the OTA leave all your apps? Glad to know Rootkeeper can retain root after the update. Not sure why but I thought this update was going to leave us having to let the market replace everything like a restore.

I was surprised as well the OTA left all my Apps pretty much intact.
I just got an update for Superuser from Google Play, v3.1(42), released today. In the changelog, Temp Unroot and OTA survival options have been added. I think this might be useful for those of us who are rooted when getting the OTA update. I plan on trying it out.
I don't have a third party "root keeper" type application installed, is there any possibility that this is just as good?

Yeah, Superuser has to compete with SuperSu, that's why those new features are in there, SuperSu has them. And yes, OTA survival works better than Voodo Roor Keeper.

The OTA survival on SuperSu and Superuser are slightly better than Voodo, as they automate some processes of regaining root, but it's the same concept.

i didnt even bother to look at the change log, i should have, im glad it is built in so now i dont have to use a third party.
Has anyone tested this on their AT&T S3? I'm rooted with stock recovery.

I am actually wondering if this works as well. Would be nice to unroot, get the update and reroot without having to redo everything ie home screen settings etc

I can't speak to other devices, but for my Transformer Infinity and Droid 4, Superuser's OTA Survival did nothing for me, and Voodoo worked perfectly.
if you have superuser in the system\app directory then you cant use the unroot as it needs to be in the \data\app directory for it to work. I tried it with both sueruser and supersu and each would only unroot if the superuser app was in the \data\app directory... i would move it their then reboot and do that... or just use the droid razr utility which will make it all stock.... best way really.
Actually, after searching around more, I think my problem may have been that the means of using the ota survival in superuser is spectacularly un-obvious and un-intuitive and nearly un-documented. I just tested using Voodo's temp unroot and then superuser to restore root and that worked.
For anyone else that finds Superuser's method confusing:
1) Before any update that might un-root your device, check the "ota survival" box in superuser
2) After an update that un-roots your device, open superuser and *uncheck* the "ota survival" box. This will restore your root and, for reasons that flabbergast me, REMOVE the backup, so ...
3) After restoring root, re-check the "ota survival" box
Compare this to Voodoo:
1) Create backup of su when rooted
2) When un-rooted, click "Restore Root"
Repeat just #2 when you get the next OTA

How do you root again after a temp unroot? unchecking the temp unroot doesnt work.. it does something, but afterwards the temp unroot is still checked. Also a phone restart doesnt help. Anyone else have this issue? (I'm on motorola defy+ with quarx jelly bean cyanogenmod)

What is the verdict for someone like me? I do not want to block ota then miss other important updates, but I do not want to lose root either.

Just block it. Sure devs will find a way to root and unlock again soon. At that point, you can restore the SDM 1.0 and get later updates if you need them.
You're sure to lose root within 5 days if you don't.
Ok, based on what you say you don't want to rom but you want root. That is where I am. There is an app called voodoo ota rootkeeper in the play store. It is free. Install it and use it to backup root. Take the update and use voodoo to restore root.
That will get you root and a locked bootloader. Which is where I read you want to be. But remember you may be stuck with a locked bootloader forever.
That said consider this. Pass on the update for now. You can always update to it later to get the next update. By waiting you keep your options open and miss nothing.

Yes, although I believe it's "Un-install", not delete. You could freeze it as well, if you have the paid for version.

I have a Note 2 that was rooted using a root-injected stock OS. Unfortunately, the OTA got me this morning and I have lost root. At the following link several folks have replied that they were able to get their Note 2's rooted after the OTA. What do you guys think? I don't want to brick my phone but I sure need Root-Explorer and Titanium Backup.

I can now confirm that, if you have a rooted, stock Note II and lose root through the OTA, you can go the Odin route with a rooted stock image and successfully root the device. Additionally, if you install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper after rooting the device, you can then, do the OTA and restore root using the Voodoo app. Instructions and files are available at:

I can confirm that a handy dandy combination of:
1. Deferring the update
2. Rooting via ExynosAbuse
3. Backing up root via Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
4. Updating
will maintain root with the latest Verizon Galaxy Note 2 update.
I am now I605VRALL4and my Device Status says "Normal" since I haven't flashed anything.

I did what you did and I am modified. I did the light sabre mod. But I don't think that would do it.

I wouldn't count on it. The ZIP seems to contain what looks like the bootloader, or at least a piece of it (ap20bl.img). Who knows what might happen after that. Motorola said a downgrade is not possible.
I would just wait for the .145 fruitcake. Then switching back and forth should be safe and painless.

I wanted to see for myself the GPS improvements made in the update and sacrificed losing SU/root access to the phone. The update installed without a hitch and left all my apk installed apps alone. I had a handful of apps that required root (e.g. Dropbear II, busybox, Superuser, root explorer, and seeder) and will just wait until someone figures out a new method to regain access again.

This response is from the developer thread. I would respond there but the policy for members with less than 10 posts is silly.
None of the existing preinstall methods (e.g. atrix-4g-moto-fastboot or superoneclick 2.3.3) work with 4.5.145.

Interesting. I tried it with my stock ROM that is rooted and unlocked -- ended up with a boot loop. Decided to flash a new ROM, so switched to the CM10 ROM. That seems to be working well and I think I will just not worry about this update for now.

Came across a link at Android Central that used Voodoo OTA RootKeeper to restore --> Forgot I installed this awhile back; reinstalling app restored my superuser access
Re-rooted 4.5.145 after OTA
I successfully re-rooted mine last night using the pre-install method.
