high android o.s on aosp roms - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

ive tried sum of the aosp roms out an noticed all of them have a very high android os usage its always tops.is this sum bug with all 4.2 roms?an what affects does this actually have on battery life?while battery isnt horrible i do find dat touchwiz based roms seem a little better on battery.what are users thoughts?

From what I've seen on my device and what I've read, it settles down after a day or so. There's an app called Rescan Media Root that seems to help knock it down right away...

This right here. After a new flash the phone had to index all you files sync, build caches and a bunch of other things. Give it a day or two and try that app of its not getting better. If it still doesn't get better grab better battery stats and let's see what's causing it.

ICS or Jellybean?

Hi guys.. ive been flashing all kinds of rom and kernel. In the end i find stock Ics with stock kernel gives me both the performance and battery life i need after removing useless start up and freezing unwanted apps.
Had been using the default touchwiz and suprising theres no lag or redraw or whatever issues. Only set back is i cant customize my stock rom.
Battery life wise i can get up to 6 hrs screen time or maybe more. Will post screenshot after i drain my battery.
On jellybean, batt drain is more noticeable regardless using stock or any other jb roms / kernels. Personally i dont like OCing or undervolting so pls dont mention abt those here.
I am wondering who else here share the same experience with both ICS and JB. Would u still stay on ics or jb?
Would love to hear opinions

Says it all really
I've recently returned to stock rom and kernel after trying warnamlite, miui and a few others. Stock is deco the next for battery. I'm getting nowhere near 6 hours screen time though. How are you stopping apps from starting up? Is this by freezing or have you used another method?

You got 6 hours of screentime with data/wifi on with ICS?
Personally I've been getting better battery life with MIUI on Jellybean, but I've also been using Siyah since the first day I flashed my ROM so that might also have something to do with it. I've had experience with stock ICS and MIUI ICS as well, and the battery drain was essentially the same. I'm running a heavily customized JDUltimate though. If you don't want to undervolt or flash another ROM/kernel then JD is a great alternative. I was using stock GB on my S2 with nothing but Juice Defender and I got pretty decent battery stats, though I can't remember them right now.

Hi .. yes approx 6hrs screen time. With only 3g. But i setted my display to around 20% brightness as im indoor most of the time. I usually use the same setup to test among roms and phones as ive got 2x S3 to play with. One of it is my gfs phone. She plays lots of games so i also hear her feedback regarding the roms and kernels i flashed for her.
I find using auto brightness actually drains the battery more with continus use. I also make sure i got only essential tasks ans apps running in backgrd. Btw i have whatsapp in backgrd all the time.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I have my brightness at the lowest setting most of the time as well, as the only time that I'm going to be in bright daylight is when I'm walking around, and I'm not going to be looking at my phone while I'm crossing the street and whatnot I figured that all of those "auto" settings actually drain more battery because of their constant turning off and on and adjusting and etc...it seems like it would consume unnecessary CPU power.
How do you manage which apps run in the background?

1. Root the phone
2. Install all the apps / games
3. Use ES task manager to remove unwanted startup
4. Use tit backup to freeze unwanted apps.
System apps like mapservice, secphone, samsung pushservice etc that runs in the background are frozen with tit backup and startup removed by ES task manager.
Result : No useless bloat running in your phones background. Better batt life and performance. I can achieve 300mb ram after a fresh reboot. Stays aroumd 400 to 500 range of ram after a day. Will observe ram a day more as i just flashed stock 3days ago.
But so far so good. Quad benchmark scores are a minimum 5.4k too! Will post screenshots on weekend.

So far my experience is in ICS's favour.
Ok. JB is latest. FIne.
BUT TELL ME SOMETHING WE CAN DO IN JB AND NOT IN ICS?
I didnt see even a single sort of such think except some added settings in settings app.
Even looks are same.
We can easily mod the ICS rom to make it look better.
For looks and functions of JB, we can use launchers ofcourse!
And personally, in JB, my ram normal usage was 500+MB.
In ICS, with same apps, its 200-300 MB. How and Why? Both stock kernels.
Also, i am used to playing games while charging. In JB, the battery only declined, even while charging when i played game. But in ics, there is charging instead of discharging even when i play games.
Therefore, jb is mess for me! So unstable with lesser battery....

Users want update because its an update not because its better other wise noobs would not have flashed leaked test roms or Polish firmware .

Missing 4.2.2 but I had some questions about it please help me.

Hello I've been running TW roms on my Note 2 for a long time now, and I love them but I came from the Galaxy Nexus and I am missing 4.2.2 and the whole AOSP feel. Things that I had a question on are:
1. When I flash a 4.2.2 rom will I be able to flash back to a 4.1.2 TW rom? or are there things that I should do to avoid any issues?
2. What kind of battery life can I expect? I know that no one can say for sure but just wondering a roundabout estimate. On TW I can get a good 24hours of battery life and around 3 hours of screen time, is it anywhere close to this?
3. Is there anything I can do to get SPen to work? I don't use it alot but I would like to use it still if possible.
That is all I think, thank you for your help in advance.

1. You can flash between AOSP and TW ROMs no problem, you just need to wipe data each time. You can also just make a nandroid of your current stock TW ROM and simply restore that if you want to go back.
2. I havent had my Note 2 very long, but I immediately put AOSP on it and based on my weeklong experience you will have no problem whatsoever getting the same usages out of the battery on AOSP, it might even end up beating that.
3. IDK about using the S-pen. I dont use it myself so I never bothered looking into it.
Hope this helps.

I was in the same boat as you. Ive flashed almost every AOSP rom here and I have never had one for over 24 hours. They all just dont have the "umph" where the TW roms all are chock full loaded of nice features that I thought I may never use. Ive always gone back to tw.
If you want, try Tweaked rom with the AOSP theme, VERY close to AOSP looks but woth a lot of TW functionality and customizations

I'm probably over-stepping my boundaries as an AOKP member...
But hey, I'll vouch for us :silly:.
Battery life exceeds your current use-case in my experience.
Yes, you can easily flash back to touchwiz.
We support SPen. You can even assign left/right/up/down swipe gestures and long-press, and double-click actions to custom actions.
I.E. Left-swipe (while holding the button) can open an app, simulate a home/back/recents press...etc.
Thank you all for your input! I decided to try it out for myself and I flashed Illusion ROM and the boast 2 days have been awesome with it nice and smooth and battery life seems about the same as it was with TW. I got almost 19 hours of battery life and 5 hours of screen time.
My only gripes about AOSP is that the volume is very low and I can barely hear people when calling them but hopefully I can find a mod or something to fix that. My signal seems to be worse too which is weird since it seems to be the same radios as the TW ROMs..well as far as I can tell.
Thanks again!

There are free apps to fix sound for now
And the signal bars are just tricking you into thinning you get more service on TW check the dBm under about phone- status
I'd call good service anything less the 100

Oh I wasn't aware of that, it just seemed lower becase my signal will drop all the way to 1X sometimes and I never noticed it with TW but maybe what you are saying is right and the signal bars weren't showing whats really going on. Do you know any of the apps to fix sound off hand? I've looked at a few but the ones I've found says that they don't work on 4.2.2 just 4.1.x. Thank you!

To fix the sound the easiest thing is to flash Plasma kernel and install Stweaks.
As for the service issues there may be some depending on your ROM and what is being done with the RIL on CM. Ultimately it isn't much to worry about unless you're missing calls and texts.

[Q] Cyanogenmod/Android OS

Hey guys, this thread is a lot like others but i cant seem to find a solution.
Im running android 4.3 jellybean on the Illusion ROM which is built off of Cyanogenmod i believe as ANDY is everywhere I go, it also has Halo and other bits and pieces from other ROMS
The problem is, my android OS Is killing the battery its at 55% at the moment, and has kept the CPU on for over an hour and a half.
It seems whatever Cyanogenmod rom i go for 9 out of ten times this happens, i had problems on 4.1 and 4.3 but not 4.2.2
I dont really want to go to another ROM because when I saw it and all the icons, transitions and such i spent a bit of money buying icon packs and wallpapers etc so i dont really want to leave it, plus its a really good rom
has anyone found a fix to this? People say disable this and disable that but then your disabling features that you shouldn't have to disable just to get the battery working when that in itself shouldn't be a problem
So, feel free to give any tips, or even write problems of your own id like to see how many people its effecting

I wouldn't expect long battery life on AOSP 4.3 , considering we still don't have sources from Samsung.
All that the developers have is a black box and are trying their best to guess how things work. Nevertheless, battery life is improving (and has improved) considerably in the latest nightly builds.

Ive used greenify and i have the boeffla kernel and its around 35%
I used to get around 2.5-3.5 of screen on time and ill be lucky to get more then 2 at this rate, are there any custom kernels that work with 4.3 that are battery friendly that you can think off of the top of your head?
Thanks, Jack

I have already directed you to the only alternate kernel that is going to work with Padawan. I am definitely no developer, but it would take a lot of effort just to extract those little options, not to mention the permission of the developer, and it would then most likely have to be installed into another kernel that could be compatible with Padawan.
I am not sure what it is that you are so intent on having those options for, I am sure you have your reasons. not sure that anything else is going to give you better battery life on a 4.1.2 rom. it seems with the progression from 4.0 through 4.4, the battery life is going to diminish a bit with every evolvement.
can I suggest maybe you try Black Jelly. the different rom may provide you that option. if not, Blownfuse has an alternate kernel list in that OP which was designed specifically for that rom.
good luck

Various roms are going to provide various results. And no 2 devices are going to react the same. I know, folks have said this before, so sorry to repeat.
For what is may be worth, here is my rundown
4.O ICS ... most stable but may be lacking in some features
4.1.2 JB ... touchwiz based, the most stable JB your going to get
4.2.1 JB ... more features evolving into, but most unstable. Some able to control with alternate kernel. Battery life dwindling.
4.3 JB ... increased smoothness and improved stability. Still able to control with an alternate kernel to a certain extent. To me it started to become like medication. The phone seemed to build up a tolerance and stability would decrease. Decreased battery life.
4.4 KK .... did not have a problem with stability, but battery life has really suffered as is the complaint of many.
No rom is going to be 100% perfect. It is more of what can you tolerate for an inadequacy.
I love my music, I FB quite often, I'm on XDA several time a day and I have been catching a few minutes of Youtube.
My phone ran ORGASMIC on Padawan and I did enjoy Hellybean also. To me, battery is like gasoline, nobody is getting any better than me. Everybody pays the same at the pump. You can always get a Ravpower battery 2700 from Amazon for $8 and many swear it increase battery life immensely.
Wow, did I go on and on or what?
So what kind of user are you?

So what kind of user are you?

I would just take a few for a test drive then. if you had a problem with Padawan and random reboots, then my guess is you either had a bad download or your not flashing clean. a dirty flash is going to leave some straggling files from previous rom which are most likely going to conflict.
but try some different roms and let them settle. give them a couple days. if its not going to work for you, try the next.
one rom just wouldn't run on my phone and that was Carbon Rom. I tried several different versions, with and without alternate kernels. always clean. many swear by it and love it, that's why I kept trying it, but it just did not like my phone. no biggie, plenty to choose from.
don't take this the wrong way, but if you the only one suffering from a side effect, than it is most likely user error. there are many glitches throughout all roms and they are usually well documented in that thread.
refer back to my last post in Padawan. again, my flashing process may be overkill, but you cant get much cleaner than that
if a battery gets me through the day, I am good

Hey man. Just giving you an update. It turns out I had a bad battery. The middle of the battery was enlarging, I have no idea why. I got a new one and everything's working much better now. Have you heard of anything like that before?

Very common at about the 10 to 12 month mark. Battery starts to swell. You can get stronger battery for $8 on amazon.
Glad everything is working better, still want to stay clean though.

[Q] What's up with my battery?

I've heard varying reports of how long peoples' batteries last, anywhere from 9 hours to 3 days. But what seems to be the common theme is that if you use your phone pretty frequently, you'll get maybe 10 hrs, but if you use the phone sporadically and not for long periods of time, you can expect the phone to last through the day and even maybe the next. But with mine I've found that the battery on average will last me maybe 10 hours, but that's with slight to almost no use. From what people have said online, the screen is what sucks up battery, but when I check with GSam Battery Monitor, my screen never seems to break 30% of my battery use. Apps are what usually take up ~45% of my battery. What's up with this? I don't wanna have to buy that stupid Mugen case, because it apparently sucks, but there are literally no other options to extend my battery... any advice? Will post screenshots. Thanks!
GSam screenshots
Also, as you can see, the individual app %'s don't add up to the huge number that Apps is taking up... is that related/significant?

It looks normal to me. Usually the people that are saying they get good battery life are the ones that are on a custom Rom and a custom kernel. From my findings the stock Rom especially with the net updates battery life seems to be worse with each update. One really good combination I have run that yields amazing battery life is CM11 and crpalmers kernel. That combination will give amazing battery life. It also depends on what you use your phone for. Judging by your screen shots thing look pretty normal. I would try giving battery guru a go in the market of you want to get some more juice. Let it learn your habits and it will help with you battery life.
You also have to remember as the device ages and you recharge the battery you can't expect it to remain fantastic like the first day you got it. Like anything else they wear down over time and can only go through so many charging cycles.
Or it may just be your battery starting to go bad. Its hard to pin point what may be wrong. It may be as simple as a rogue app. Try some of the suggestions I mentioned above and post back to let us know how your doing. If your not rubbing a custom Rom I recommend switching to one. They are packed with features and the battery life is generally better.
Anyways good luck. Post back if you have any more questions.

100% agree. Especially with the updates leading to worse battery life.
I recently switched to the DNA from an S4. Unlocked and S off'd. Flashed 4.4.2 Rom and immediately noticed how awful battery was in comparison to my Samsung. I actually flashed an older jellybean Rom with Sense 4+ and now I'm experiencing battery life as good as my S4, even though the S4 has a larger battery and newer hardware.

Thanks for the info guys i'll keep that stuff in mind. I've tried several times to S-Off and flash a custom ROM but every time I try, firewater or rumrunner or whatever im using that time always says 'connection failed.' I've been unable to find any fix for why it's failing, so i've kind of given up. Any chance you guys can link to any super simple instructions?
Like I honestly don't understand temproot and those things. thanks!

In general there is a thread titled "am I too late to root" where I tried to explain the process to another poster the best I can.
couldn't hurt to give it a read. Maybe it will help you.

Getting a little stuck... Did the Weaksauce part, and downloaded the firewater file... what do I do now? I copied firewater to my SD card, what command window do I use? I really don't get exactly what to do...

I really don't know how to explain it any better than I did in that thread. On page 2, I wrote a complete step by step..the file goes into your sdk folder and then you run the command while in fast boot..I posted links and all in that thread. I don't know how to help further.
