Hi guys,
I searched for some days, but all i find are videos of sketches, drawings etc...
What i want yo check is if the phone is actually good at writing handwritten notes. Is it easy? Or is it ok just for smsll notes?
Thanks

I would like to think so. I'm a note taking guy. Always trying to take notes on stock, customers, personal tasks things like that. You can even make folders and organize it to categories. You have to get use to the handwriting. Mine has improved, but started as if a 5 year old wrote them. Now looks like a 12 year old. Ive let others write things on it with better success. Could be my very own penmanship to be honest lol. I think its great for my note taking needs. I wish my Co worker had a note so that we can collaborate and share notes that we have written. In fact i chose to sick with this over the s3 because of that and size.

If it was the note 10.1, yeah. This is good for short, quick notes. The tablet would be better for more intense note taking. The screen and pen isn't exactly the most accurate.

I actually used it to take notes for my college classes this last semester. My mileage varied, and I had to experiment a bit to get things to where it worked out. I found myself using smemo, but ended up almost never using handwriting to take the bulk of my notes that consisted of text. I would use the tablet swype beta with the pen, because I found that to be much faster than actually handwriting notes out. Plus, you can fit more info on a screen with text instead of handwriting. Also, the tablet swype has a tab key which is very useful for indenting notes.
Where the note shines for electronic note taking is its ability to combine text entered with the keyboard with sketches and pictures. Until getting my note, I had wanted and tried to take notes electronically with my laptop, but always ran into troubles with graphs, sketches, and equations. The note allows you to use both text, and also scribble those things down when needed, which I found very satisfying. And that was before premium suite, which added even more features that make it even better. Equations were always way to difficult to type up properly, so whenever I needed to take note of an equation, I would just switch to the pen and hand write it out, making fractions, integrals, exponents, and other non typical characters a breeze to record.
As for storing and organizing my notes, I used evernote to sync them into a different folder for each class after I was done for the day. Smemo/snote have a feature to sync to evernote right in the app, so its really simple and useful.
If you're planning on getting the note anyways (not sure why anybody wouldn't if they're looking for a new phone), its definitely possible and worth a shot.
Edit: I agree with the others though on the fact that the note 10.1 would be the real way to go, but for what the note can do as a phone, its friggen amazing and makes me excited about the future of the line. I told myself I don't need a tablet, but thinking about the note 10.1 makes me almost want to get it purely for note taking in class, just because the experience has been satisfactory on my note already, and the same experience on a bigger screen would be awesome.

Nice. If i was at your position i would've taken definitely a keyboard with me
You said that all people should consider the Note.... unfortunately as yiu know, the size is rthe biggest drawback of this phone. Either if you put it on the table and all around start teasing you, or if you go for a walk and you can feel it continiously in your pocket...

I would consider the keyboard if I could type fast on one. I swype faster than I type, as I use two fingers on a normal keyboard. Always hated that b*tch Mavis Beacon...haha.
Yes, the note doesn't work for everybody, but I just said they should consider it. There are a few female users on here, or users who have wives with notes that love it even though they have small hands and pockets. I see the size as a double edged sword, its either love or hate I suppose. Haha. It's definitely worth a look by everybody.
Also, I usually get more awestruck looks and questions than teasing when people see my phone. Only my close friends will tease and call it a tablet, and I just say, damn straight, I friggen love my tablet!

Note to bring up an old-ish thread but... I was wondering about this exact same thing.
I'm currently going for my Bachelors in Petrol Eng and have a lot of Math to go through.
I was mainly interested in the phone because of the sheer size of the phone, but I am worried that I couldn't go back to anything smaller and more normal and rationally sized after having a Note.
But how is it for Calculus notes? Or does anyone have any take on this?

Like I've said, its definitely doable, but can take some getting used to. I would make sure and get on an ICS rom with premium suite, as then you would have maximum functionality, and I found the spen to be even more accurate. I haven't tried it, but there is an equation tool even in the premium suite s note application, which could potentially be really useful. However, if you wanted to guarantee good note taking, I would get the Note 10.1 when it comes out, as it has the same functionality but a much larger screen.

Hey everyone, I've encountered a little nuisance with my HTC One.
Under Storage the phone claims around 7GB is in use under "Other". However, when I plug the device into my computer via USB, I can't find any directories that are taking up this amount of space using Windows Explorer or Android Commander, which lets me down into the root of the filesystem.
FYI, I have Nova Launcher active as my primary UI, so I'm not even using Sense 5 at the moment. I know that 7GB can't just be Sense 5 + Built-in apps.
Anyone else seeing this and know what it is?
It actually probably is just Sense 5 and the AT&T bloat apps. Apparently Android along with the manufacturer's skins are pretty large now. Then add AT&T's useless apps that literally no one uses and you have 7gbs of storage being consumed. This is one of the reasons I'm going with the 64gb.

Wow, that's crap. What exactly is that being used for? There's no way 16gbs of space is reasonable at all.

That's asinine that it reserves that much storage... Completely inexcusable when you factor in the lack of an SD card. Epic fail.
I think HTC realized that since they are releasing the Chinese version WITH microSD support... >_<
At least they aren't pulling the crap they used to - like with the Inspire - saying it had 4GB of storage but then formatting it for speed, dropping it to 2GB and leaving 1.3GB or so to the end user...
Still what the hell would they reserve a quarter of the storage for?!
im guessing the extra 9 GB that are part of my "other" are the SD card data for some of the apps i have installed. but it still seems excessive.
Ugh, now we're seeing the ugly side of the HTC One. I don't think I'm going to keep mine now. I can't justify 7GB of my 32GB taken up by the system when I don't even use Sense 5 or any of the AT&T apps. Especially since I can't add more space to the phone, it's just not a good deal for me.
It's a shame too, it's a sexy device.

Ok. Take in mind that this is from someone who was dead set on getting the S4 only a week ago. I also want to add that my non-tech-savvy iPhone-using mother was with me at the AT&T store while I was comparing phones and also agreed that the One is better.
1. The screen is smaller on the One but it has better color reproduction and, when playing the trailer for 'Star Trek Into Darkness' on both devices, produced clearer results.
2. The One's software is much more optimized and runs smoother than that on the S4. In my half an hour of constant use with both devices, the One maybe had three instances of minor lag while the S4 produced lag (sometimes major lag) every few seconds. The S4's lag was most prominent when multitasking, hitting the back button, or going home. Switching between home screens produced some stuttering but was not terrible.
3. Speaking of software, the "features" on the S4 aren't that great. Probably the most difficult thing about using the S4 was trying out the Smart features. Many of them were pretty useless such as scrolling through web pages with hand gestures. However, it did actually work and work pretty well. I also really liked having the ability to answer the phone by waving in front of the phone and seeing some general information displayed on the phone after waving my hand in front of it while it was sleeping. But that's about as useful as it gets. I could never get Eye Tracking to work. Some kid beside me finally did after nearly a minute and a half of working with it which completely defeats the purpose of using it in the first place. None of the other features really worked well either making me wonder why Samsung decided to add them to the device and bog it down in the first place.
4. Build materials are pretty bland on the S4. I'm not going to criticize them for using plastic because plastic is durable enough, but I am going to criticize them for not really differentiating the phone from the S3 in terms of look. I was, however, impressed with how they implemented the 5" screen into such a compact and usable package, but that's about it. The S4 is no looker. My mom was also not a fan of the design, thinking at first that the hyper glazed finish was some sort of case and not the actual design.
5. Sound quality through the headphones was good on both devices but better on the One due to its added amplifier. The S4 had definitely improved over the S3 and maintained a pretty loud volume. The One was slightly louder and produced more dynamic results with great highs and lows. The average person would be happy with the sound quality from either, though.
6. The general Android apps such as Texting and Email are hardly changed on the S4. For some users, this will be fine. But, personally, I hate the stock Android Messaging app. I have a Nexus 4 and have used GoSMS since the day I purchased it. I don't understand why anyone would want to view a multiple picture MMS like a slideshow instead of each photo separately. Thankfully, the One does exactly that and has a rather perfect Messaging app. Of course, you can always download GoSMS or Handcent or something from the Play store, but the fact that this won't be necessary on the One is nice.
7. This is picky, but I really liked the One's keyboard. Like, a lot. I've been a stock Android keyboard user since ICS and I didn't think that choice would change with the purchase of any new phone. But the keyboard on the One is nice. Really nice. I almost never made mistakes on the keyboard when using it. On the S4, I couldn't stop making mistakes. If you're just going to use SwiftKey or the stock Android keyboard, this probably isn't a huge deal to you. But I found it shocking that I loved the One's keyboard.
So, yeah. This is a huge post but those are my honest opinions. I was as subjective as I possibly could be and my honest opinion is that the One is the better phone.

The storage space being reflected in Other is from App Data.
HTC's storage doesn't give the user a run-down of the apps that are classified as Other when you select Other.
If I go to Storage on my Galaxy Note 10.1, and push Other (on the Galaxy Note 10.1, it is classified as Miscellaneous Files), I am given a run-down of the all of the app data that is classified as Other/Miscellaneous.
The Galaxy S3 (which I switched from to get The One) has it's storage implemented in the same way on the stock ROM.

Exactly, specifically the /data/data folder.
Whoever said it's the system partition is incorrect.
BTW, when you buy a 32GB device, that means 32GB total NAND storage. On the One it's broken down like this:
/system 1GB
/cache 629MB
/data and /sdcard (share the same partition) 22GB, or 54GB on a 64GB model.
The rest goes to modems (/firmware/mdm and /firmware/q6), secure (/data/secure/data and /mnt/asec), and miscellaneous other partitions (logs, etc.)
Every device on the market is this way, the total NAND space is divided up between a variety of things and the usable /data and /sdcard space is generally 80 to 85% of the total.
It's not supposed to be like that. I've had that issue a few times on my 32gb M7. Copied my files to PC. Formatted my SD card. Copied files back. Reclaimed about 14gb each time as far as I can remember. Then after a few weeks, the issue comes back out of nowhere.

Yeah, I'm the same only 7gb though. Using TWRP I make a backup on my usb-otg. Wiped everything internal and restored from usb. Worked once or twice, didn't work today though. Probably is just system files.
Both are the OS makers flagships, seems like a fair comparison compared to other android phones. Anyone thought about going for the new Iphone(6s) and chose the nexus instead?
-I've always had Android smartphones(and mostly the flagships), and thought about trying iOS for the first time with the Iphone 6s, but after 5min with a friend's Iphone 6 I decided I can't deal with no back and recent menu buttons.
What about you guys? do you feel android is superior to iOS in every subject? Personally I feel the app support and API there are better, but thats about it

What's the point in this comparison ?
Will it make you choose iPhone over? What are you doing here then? Isn't iPhone forum a better place for you to fetch the info?

You're absolutely spot on with this comparison. I've seen articles talking about Google taking shots at its "Android partners". I feel they are legitimately taking a shot at Apple. This is clear spec-wise. Pure Android vs ios. 6p for the win, lol.
You can't really compare these. The ecosystem differences mean too much to let the hardware drive the discussion. Plus it's just a flame war.

6s is faster, A9 chip is better, battery life on ios is great because ios is so well optimized. Depends how you use your phone though. I was planning to switch to 6s because got tired of gps never working on android when I needed it, but on my note 5 gps locks right away so I resisted temptation.

This is the best answer, seriously. There's hardcore people in both camps that will "never switch back because blah blah blah".
I respect Apple, they make nice devices and their interface is very fluid. Android has come a LONG way and just suits me better. Personally the lack of a "back" button on iOS devices baffles me.
There are plenty of issues with IOS. Plenty of issues with Android as well. For me, Android works much better than IOS. I can't stand the home screen of folders and icons. Its like looking at nova's app list all day. Then on top of that there are device limitations like not being able to use my phones storage to move a file around like I would on a PC just drives me nuts. The way safari scrolls drives me nuts. Its one page at a time and that is it, scroll, stop, scroll, stop if I'm on a forum or skipping a couple of articles on a long tech site its annoying. Mail attachments, same file type limitations. No back button, no menu button etc etc. Their pressure gimmick reminds me of long press which again has been around forever. The list goes on and on.
Lets not mention inferior hardware, more expensive and while people from both groups can be insufferable I'll take an Android fanboi over an IOS one any day of the week.

yup, great response. that's mostly why I've been with Android and then the nexus line since the early S2 days, and didn't switch to an Iphone. Thing is though, it doesn't matter how big Android gets(as it's already the biggest OS by far) it still seems like the apps support on iOS is better(which, from what I've read, is bc app dev claim Iphone revenue is ridiculously better then Android, even when android has more phones on the market).
So the only reason I always thought about making a switch is because of the apps catalog. They have more polished apps in general, way more enjoyable games etc and to those that may of noticed( probably most didn't) iOS still gets better support from big companies- mostly because they have more API support. For those that are using Vine/Snapchat etc from day one you'd know about the time difference it took for these(and many) other apps and in build features just to get to android, sometimes an update on iOS for an app gets to android months later. and that sadly still happens.
And I got to say I'm not one of those performance is everything guy and benchmark my phone the moment I get it, but hands down 2.5k on greekbench which is 2.5x then my Note 4 which is already fast is ridiculous. they do have some good engineers(..and the 810 couldn't even not overheat:silly: )
Edit: for those that love to argue over the internet, this is really not the place. People can have a discussion about a subject and not go directly into a flame war. Saying that an Iphone is better at some areas doesn't make me an iOS fanboy, and owning many Android phones(including previous nexuses) doesn't make me an Android fanboy(mostly, anyway ; ). Yes, I like android but I wouldn't bash competitioners just for the sake of it. And it's enjoyable to talk about technology and phones. that's the point of this thread - just for some previous comments I've seen.

Well for starters the Iphone has limited ram and it limits what it can do multi task wise. Which is why when people exit out of safari and open something else, say facetime many times the browser has to refresh when you go back to it. Same for other applications. There is less room to multitask on the Iphone. Yet you pay the same as another device with perhaps double the ram.
The retina display is inferior.
There are two pretty big items right there.

With Note 5's bloated touchwiz launcher/apps eating those RAM.. yeah I agree with you.

Ahh, the age old question. I'm mainly a Android user but like and use IOS also. When the iphone came out, I really wanted it, but I didn't get it because I didn't want to switch to AT&T. When my contract was up, a friend of mine told me to checkout the Nexus One. I've been hooked ever since.
I always find it funny when people start throwing specs around. Yes the Iphone has inferior specs, but that doesn't matter. The Iphone has always operated well with the hardware it had. There are a lot of things I like about Android over IOS but the specs were never something I worried about.
I think it's cool to play around with... But Push comes to shove when doing work related things I never go to it.
I use it for writing down lists for groceries and for grabbing screen shots etc
I use mine to draw and sketch a lot.
It's the main reason I've only had the note series for years.
I use it for work all the time. Being able to jot down notes and thoughts quickly is the best!
Pen? This thing has a pen?

when i first got a Note device ,
way back ....Note 2 and then Note 3 and Note 4 ,
i hardly used the S pen .
Started seeing the value /ease, to do something on my Note 5 .
Really missed my Spen on my S8 + .
Yes, i use S pen a lot now .
Apart from notes etc .
I use Spen for my Klwp theming ,where i found that the navbar gets in my way,
when doing precise value selections etc .
(Navbar either visible or hidden ).
I also sometimes uses it to preview a link or general scrolling .
Also sometimes when using keyboard .
It's just faster than i can type ,with my "dumb" fingers .!
I'm an artist and the pen is specifically why I buy the note phones. While I do all my major work on an ipad pro and desktop, the notes are my go everywhere sketch pad, pretty much everything I draw starts as a rough sketch on the note.
I use the pen to make quick notes at the meetings, shopping lists at home, any time I need to make quick note. I used to use pieces of paper, which usually would get misplaced, then had to look for it, no more. My kids love to draw on my phone as well. Probably use my phone more often with pen, than without it. It's like a mouse on my computer. I feel like dedicated iphone user, only couple models to choose from and high prize to pay. I tried other (without spen) phones, but it doesn't work for me at all.
The pen is very useful, other than the taking quick notes (much faster than virtual keyboard) the most useful thing about it is signing PDF documents, i can pretty much fill out a PDF, sign it and then print to PDF (so no one messes with the signature) without the need to print and scan and much faster. Can do the same for paper forms using Office Lens or Scanbot. Also Microsoft's Remote Desktop client beta version works wonderfully with the s-Pen if you want the portability of a smartphone but the full power of a desktop that's a great go to.
Edit: also anyone looking for a spare s-Pen should look at the s-Pen that came with the galaxy tablet S3, it's a more robust pen, bigger, feels better in the hand and the button works better. Only downsides are it does not store inside the phone and it's not waterproof.
I use my Spen everyday. It's nice to use it to go through your phone. Then not to mention the best part copy and paste anything.
I'm new to the Note universe so I have not used the S Pen much....yet.
I use my S-Pen a good bit - as in at least a few times a day
Notes for both work and home.
Sometimes to mark up a photo to send someone.
I set up to have S-Notes back - so I can make a quick note and have a reminder
Used my trusty old Note 4 for a good while - it is still going strong!
I have the Tab S3 so i sync notes between devices. I make notes every day. I make a note on my Note8 to make sure i don't forget ideas and plans. Very important in business. Writing notes helps me remember information. I use OneNote and Samsung Notes.

OneNote is indispensable, the ability to sync notes between the Tab S3, Note 8 and PC (laptop and desktop) makes it essential, and that's not bringing in the ability to share your notebooks with others. The fact that the desktop app is free and has OCR ability makes it a no brainer. Also Office Lens will scan direct to your OneNote too.

I think it's cool to play around with... But Push comes to shove when doing work related things I never go to it.

The S Pen is far from essential- but in addition to its "unique" capabilities- I just like using it instead of touch when I can. It seems more precise and if I daresay hygenic.

I would not pay 1,020.00€ for a "Novelty". I already spent near that when the SGS8+ came out.
For me the Note S-pen is the reason I buy......'the Note'..... Its more than a pen its a mouse. I like the hover part when placed over an email or document and it gives you information about the content without opening the mail or document. I can wizz through my emails only opening ones I need to reply to in a hurry. There is so much more to the S-pen.

It's the only reason I bought it.
When I had my Note 5 I would use it to jot down random ideas. Also it's really great for meetings. I can write down and organize my notes. Plus it's convenient when used with certain apps. You can hover to see additional content. I've used Evernote and the Galaxy Memo app in place of it but it's not the same

ditto, i use it to sign contracts and other documents in my line of work. also use it to draw on screenshots of software/hardware diagrams prepared using PowerPoint. i'm always writing on pictures shared with friends and i use it for SNote Action Memos, too.
For Mouse Over Actions...that just one...it's awesome. Plus, no fingerprints on the screen. Once you get used to it...you'll find that you may prefer to use it to navigate through the phone with it.
Does anyone know of a good alternative to the built-in Notes app? It works fine but I don't like using Samsung's apps if I there is an alternative.
I'm also going to try out some third party drawing and painting apps, so I'm open for suggestions there to.
Thanks
Nebo is by far the best.

Thanks! In my 'quest' that one has been on most lists. I'll check it out. I think that 'Inkredible' is exactly what I was looking for, but haven't even used it yet.
Concerning your search for a good drawing app, I would suggest :
Autodesk's Sketchbook : I've been using it for a while (on my old Note Tab 2014 Ed.) and it's really good. IIRC some features must be unlocked (I probably did unlock everything a long time ago, so I'm not sure), but I love the UI : not in your face and very efficient.
Concepts : never used it but from what I've seen it looks awesome with some very cool features. Can't wait to test it on my yet to be received Tab S6 (not compatible on my old tablet)
Adobe Photoshop Sketch : I was using it a lot a long time ago (on my Galaxy Note 2) : I recall liking it a lot, I don't know why I'm not using it more.
Yeah as above stated auto sketchbook is good

Nebo does indeed look great. Does it have 'palm rejection'? Even their site only mentions it in relation to Windows.

I used to use a crippled version of Autodesk on a 7" tablet and loved it then! I just installed it and everything is now free.
Never heard of Concepts—I'll check that one out.
Photoshop Touch (discontinued) was also one of favorites from the past. I've read about, but have yet to find, the version that was modded for tablets and Pie—official developement was stopped way before Pie. This is probably the best Adobe app for smaller screens. IIRC it does "everything" well and when it was discontinued Adobe created 3 other apps that, combined, didn't have the functionality that PS Touch has. BTW, It's available in xda labs, but, like I said, it's UI is for smaller screens, and you'll have to track down, or go to my shared pCloud folder https://bit.ly/2VXRoLt to get the version modded for Pie. I don't have link to where I got it but I've checked it out, and I haven't done anything to it. It works on Pie, but the UI, imo, makes it unusable on large screens.
Thanks everyone!

Nebo has full palm rejection and is extremely accurate with its convertion. It has heaps of other usable funtions
I think this tab is freaking awesome! But.... I'm using onenote and the handwriting isn't as smooth as in for example Inkredible. Is there a handwriting app where l could write text and then move the text to OneNote? By the way, does OneNote have the handwriting-to-text-function somewhere?
Thanks guys!

You just convinced me. Thanks!
Squid is excellent if you just need it for taking notes and marking up PDF's. Not bloated with features you don't need. Has full S-pen pressure support, etc.
Also "INKredible - Handwriting Note" should be very good like i saw in a review. Im tempted to go for that.

I tried out thinking it had 'handwriting to text' feature, but it doesn't. I'm pretty sure I'll buy MyScript Nebo, but really just want 'handwriting to text' so am still looking for alternative.
Thanks
My issue with Nebo is that it does not support the pressure levels of the S-Pen, i.e., there is no difference in thickness. That is why I have returned it after a try. It is quite expensive either.

True, but I just bought it because it's the only app I could find with 'handwriting-to-text' function, which is really the only thing I want it for. $11 USD is a bit expensive, but in the big scheme of things I spend more on one lunch sometimes.
UPDATE: Works great! It even recognizes my very sloppy handwriting.
Just noticed MyScript Nebo is on sale for $2.99 USD—not sure for how long.
