In my HTC Titan I know I have to have the sim in it to use it. Well, when and if I am able to HPLC this thing, will the sim card become less necessary?
Also, We all know how backwards the Windows phone is about connecting to servers. I can't connect to my work's email. That is also their fault for not allowing non-conventional hardware to connect. But the rub is, IPhone and Droid, and Blackberry can all connect automatically. Those phones automatically connect to the server, then they allow it through. My Titan doesn't connect to the server like that. Even though the same information is entered in the same place in the same way as those other phones. The rub is that Microsoft made the phone, the server software and whatever else. But they didn't see fit to make it all seamlessly work TOGETHER. I said all that to say this; I bet when, if, I get to HSPL my phone, I will no longer have that asinine problem to deal with.
What has your experience been along these lines.?

I had a idea but couldnt figure it out with a google search..
The sim-card is as i understand it merely a storage card for a bunch of identity-data.
Couldnt it, at least in theory, be possible to make the phone scan and save the sim-card info?
That would make it possible to leave the card at home with a fully functional unit.
I mean, in some level its bound to be a simple identifier handshake with the network that distinguishes a unique sim-card on the cell network.
the phone itself starts fine without a simcard, so a software based simcard solution feels plausible.
And since we´re already using a handheld computer to make phone-calls, the processing power is there
it could be nice to have a few sim-cards active at once, to recieve office calls after hours while using the private number to call mom
It would be disastrous when it comes to security.
All carriers are regulated and something that you imagined will never happen but we all know that even highest security have been torn apart.
this is not possible, if you want to know exactly why read on gsm security and how sim cards work.
for short: the sim card is kind of a smartcard, if does active calculations. also the part where the "unciphered" data is transfered (somewhere between simcard and radio part of the phone) is absolutley closed source and secured against attacks or sniffing in several ways (soft AND hardware). these parts are the best protected secrets of the operators, as they would get into serious trouble if it was easily possible to clone sim cards. also there would occur technical difficulties if more than one subscriber tries to login with the same IMSI. there were rumors about a specific nokia (iirc 1100) produced in now-closed factory in bochum, germany, that were said to be able to log on to the network with a different phone number. this should have enabled criminals to sniff sms' with TAN numbers for bank account transactions, the rumor led to ebay-prices of several 10.000$ for the specific device. afaik (though it was never really admitted) this was a big hoax, as the potential attacker still needed access to the original sim card of the victim, rendering the whole security bug useless (if you have the original sim you can just use this to receive sms...). the said bug actually existed, and was in the former mentioned security module between sim and radio, making it possible to clone sim cards at all.
this is roughly my understanding, i am not really an expert on that subject, but i work in that field.
Does anyone know how to do that?
Yes, people know how.
Sent from the XDA App on my FroYoed Sprint Hero...so forgive possible typos
OK now I'm the same distance as before
the function no longer exists in WM7
I have just read that the function must be enabled
has anyone tried?
THX
it seems there is a way to unlock tethering on the samsung phones after dialing some access numbers..
No one has found out the access num for the HTC handsets till now..
hope it would also come out soon
code of Samsung and LG, I also found
I do not understand why Microsoft is such a "reactionary" makes
if you used the old functions in ZUNE
- Outlook sync (contacts etc)
- Tethering
in addition, the Live ID, etc
then it would have been perfect.
pity
There's an issue with carriers I believe. It would strain networks and possibly cause them to charge for the service (the Samsung workaround charges to MODEM usage, not data)
Spot on

I think Lumic is correct. The carriers maybe the ones that don't want this function. Not sure about the straining networks or charging part.. eg: Telstra is all "NextG" so what difference would it make if you hit the network to download email or web browse using your phone or thru your phone. You would still be hitting the same network for data and you have already paid for the data allowance.
I have used it previously on all my Win Phones as it saved me carrying another device.
I'm guessing the carriers want to force you to buy a 3G dongle/plan for data from them. Now that is something we could all understand
Still early days yet and all this may change.
Until then, fingers crossed someone finds the access to the maintenance menues on the Mozart and we can enable it ourselves.
I really cant imagine T$ making people pay for teathering. they want you to be able to bundle everything onto your device. It is a big feature for them to say why have 2 devices. You still pay a premium for their data.
Free Tethering on Telstra?
I have no doubt Mozart can tether. But as Microsoft WP7 is trying to get OS share on smartphones, Microsoft will try and do whatever it can to attract carriers. My old HTC TP2 -running WM6.5 - tethered with no more setup than attaching a usb cable to laptop (vista). This technology is nearly 3 years old. It was in my HTC phone back then. (Even my old Sony Ericcson P900 had it on Symbian)
T$ do want you to buy 2 devices, and charge you for both. When I first got my HTC TP2 , they wanted 2cents/kb as modem. Then you had different sim for modem and phone (and 2 different rates of pay for the same service effectively).
I hope market demand makes T$ want to offer features - especiall ones that are already on the phone. But instead - they lock these features, and put usless apps and self promoting links of no real use. They know that most users would remove this rubbish so the lock them in the menus.
To promote the Mozart, you now can get 1GBdata for $10. (previously 20MB for $10). Wouldn't it be great to tether Mozart and actually USE the 1GB! Nodoubt there are some that like the small screen, lots of video streaming and music downloads to the Mozart. But I'd rather do that on my laptop.
Please Telstra, turn on the modem!
I have a SIM-unlocked AT&T Titan, and I was looking forward to using it to the max.
However, I've run into a problem. When I click Internet Sharing, it tells me to contact AT&T. My carrier allows tethering, and I don't think AT&T will do anything for me.
What is my recourse?

Throw the Titan in the ocean. Seriously though, not much you can do. I am using an AT&T "unlocked" Titan on Tmobile that I bought from Microsoft and I can't tether even though Tmobile doesn't care. Until someone manages to unlock this phone it is really a worthless investment. Don't get me wrong, I love the promise of the Titan it's just that the corporate scumbags at AT&T have severely disabled it.

I wish AT&T, being the "premier partner" of WP7, wasn't allowed to hobble it so severely.
AT&T Charges a premium for tethering. So why do you expect AT&T ever give you a phone with free tethering? It locked down iPhones and Android phones. Wp7 will not be any different.

Tethering is possible if you follow the "permanent unlock" post further up on the topics list. This permanent unlock has the added advantage of enabling internet sharing on OTHER NON-ATT sims. Be careful NOT TO RUN HTC Connection Setup after you do this as somehow this little HTC apop reenables the ATT internet sharing lock. I am posting this with an ATT Titan with Permannent unlock and a TMOBILE sim with Internet sharing enabled. Unfortunately all I can manage is edge with Tmobile in this phone but I assume in Europe I can have full 3g. This hack does not enable Internet sharing with an ATT sim unless you have the tethering plan. And for what it's worth, ATT are cretan ass*****s when it comes to tethering. I bought their PAYGO 1 gig data plan and it will not allow me to tether. Please explain to my why the f*** I shouldn't be able to tether when I PAY for a specific amount of data??!! Obviously I can't HOG bandwidth as I PAID for this data. When I go over my 1 gig I am charged more. Seriously, ATT have their heads up their a** and I am looking forward to seeing them go out of business. They are simply the worst provider on the planet and should be boycotted at all costs.
Fixed
Hi,
I think I have found the solution to this issue (a lill time consuming though).. It wasn't working for me and after doing the following I am able to do the internet sharing on my unlocked AT&T HTC Titan...
First you need to reset your phone to factory settings by doing the following (beware that all your personal data, applications and settings will be gone so better sync your phone with your PC first.. ):
Go into settings->about->reset your phone (you might need to scroll to the bottom). It confirms twice.. do that to reset your phone
After the phone is back on, try setting it up as your would do to a new device.
*** HTC Connection Wizard or Setup(whatever is that app called) seems to be the culprit so DO NOT install that app ever if you want the tethering to work.. It seems it resets some registereis as soon as it is switched on which blocks the tethering there after**
You might want to use 'reinstaller' app from the market place which will help you get all your previously installed apps by connecting to the Windows Live account and going through the list of apps you ever installed using that Windows live account. This process is the most tedious one but still better then nothing..
Once all this is done, connect your phone back to your PC and sync back in all the content that you lost from your cell while resetting.
Hope this helps.

Not working at all..it is not giving option for not installing HTC apps..by default it is taking it and not allowing to back or doing something else..
@vatsal1212 - I did the same prior to Dft HSPL and it didn't work for me too. If you want the IS to work with your AT&T phone you will need to flash custom (fully unlocked) rom. However, it is not a straight forward process especially with AT&T branded Titan. I suggest for you to read these related threads:

Getting rid of this message is easy if you have interop unlock. You will need to send root tools to the phone with a xap deployment tool (like from the windows phone sdk) then use the registry editor to add this value
[HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings] OpenMarketEnabled=dword:1
Then edit this value so it reads:
[HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings] EntitlementURI=./Vendor/MSFT/Registry/HKLM/Comm/InternetSharing/Settings/OpenMarketEnabled
Here's a link to a thread that explains the process poorly. The key is to have the two lines above in your registry. No matter how you get to the regediting step. Worked for my focus flash.

I have an old HTC Incredible that I am letting my 7 year old son use as a phone and game device. It is no longer activated on Verizon, but by using the wifi connection and a combination of Google voice and an SIP client I have managed to turn it back in to a working phone. It just needs to be near my phone, which has a shared wifi 4G connection, or any other wifi network.
He really enjoys is, and can still download games and make phone calls etc. Everything is great! And Dad doesn't pay a penny for any of it.
Somehow the phone has decided that it needs an OTA update from Verizon now. I obviously can't let it do that, since I am not paying Verizon to use it anymore. The phone constantly asks him if its ok to update the software. Every time it boots, and even when it's just been running for a while.
Here is my question... Does anyone know where the flag is in the SQL database that is triggering this? I would like to reset the flag so it stops asking the question. I have told him NOT to do it, but its just a matter of time until he accidentally does, or his sister does.
Has anyone ever run across that flag while playing in the SQL databases on a verizon phone??
Thanks, any info is greatly appreciated.. I'm surprised there is not more info out there on converting these old phone into stand alone android devices, and some tools to make it easier. Lots of people must have old phones around to do stuff like this with....
I orded a new sim card as it was saying sim not recognised and i could never use the standalone features, but since i put the new sim card in it doesn't even say sim not recognised it will only let me make emergency calls... anyone have any idea what's going on. Watch totally unusable for what i want, to be able to leave my phone at home for short trips out and still keep intouch.
Are you sure that your new SIM is connected to your phone/data account with your provider? I would test the SIM in another device (e.g. phone) first to make sure it works properly on your network before assuming the problem is with the watch.
It could also be that the SIM is not making contact properly when inserted in the watch. Check the contacts are lining up properly and the back door is on completely as it holds the SIM in place.
