[Q] GS3 Woes - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, let me say that I am located in the EU (Malta) and using my new GS3 on Melita Mobile. I went to a lot of trouble to get this particular model as a replacement when I lost my phone on a trip to the US during the holidays.
Second, I am a fairly technical individual. I have checked out all of the instructions for rooting the phone and installing a custom ROM. But now I am not so sure this is a good idea.
My previous phone was an HTC Desire S. It functioned quite well. But this Galaxy just seems to be a giant headache. Is it the Samsung ROM? Android? Hard to say, but this phone refuses to let me set up Voice Mail (Call forwarding sputters back Unexpected Response from Network), and if I try to remove diverts using ##002# I get Invalid MMI error(s).
When I recieve .vcf files, the phone doesn't process them at all like my Desire once did. Even if I save the .vcf as an attachment to the SD card, they are unrecognizable as a vCard by this phone.
On my Desire if someone called me that wasn't in my contacts and I missed the call, I could go to the log, select them and call them back. The Galaxy doesn't allow me to do this.
Lastly (This one really perplexes me), people in my contact list sometimes appear as 'Unknown' callers. Couple this with the missed call issue, and I cannot return calls to Unknown callers. And I KNOW that some of them do not have Caller ID blocked since they worked fine and did not show as Unknown on my Desire.
So, do I proceed to root a smart phone that seems to fall short of even being smart? Not so sure. Seems like a brick already.

And your point is?????? swap back to Desire or buy new one

Sounds like a network/configuration problem to me, best bet is to contact your carrier and find out what is going on

EMERGENCY !!! How Can I Retrieve a Deleted Number?

i got a htc inspire 4g running absolution 3.7 (based on cm7). someone called me on my phone yesterday and had the number on my call log.. i didnt save it. by accident, i deleted the number from my call log. is there any way to get it back? is it still stored in my phone?
Ask your mobile operator
Ask your mobile operator to tell you the number of caller who called you, they might have that info in their servers. Tell them it is very very very very important to you, otherwise they don't bother to tell you anything. You have to make them believe that it was actually very important to you.
This is a long way out, but it might work.
I don't know any way to retrieve that no.. So wait for some other person on xda who can tell you a solution.
But my solution, use it when nothing works. Because my solution might work.

hi apourvi.. thank you for your reply.. the problem with asking tmobile this is that i'm on pre-paid with them.. i'm no longer a regular customer.. i called them saying that its an emergency and the whole nine.. but they said it was impossible to get me the number since i'm on pre-paid. let me know what you think.. thanks brother.
Search online website of your provider
Go online to your provider, check if they have some 'login' or 'register'.
Go online to your provider and look at your history there. They might provide some info on your mobile records.
And I think there should not be any problem in retrieving a call log for your provider, even if your on Pre-paid.
For e.g. if police have suspect a phone no. (in case of crime cases), they ask the provider for call log info, and they get it, whether its pre paid or post paid.

[Q] call forward from and to specific number

Dear All
I'm sure everybody had this already that he got calls from unwanted numbers, and they don't stop.
I usually use blacklist pro (bought version) with android 4.1.1 it doesn't work currently, probably it has something to do with pdroid, i'm using a cyanogen rom.
Anyway..
So far i'm more intrested in call forwarding instead of blocking.
I am locking for an app which can forward this annoying caller to another number, or all numbers which are not in my contact list.
so far i couldn't find an app doing exactly this what I wanted to.
(It does not matter if the forward counts on my own phone bill, because i've got flat anyway...)
so does someone know an app for this?
would this anyway technicaly be possible?

well all those so called 'Call blocking or forwarding' apps available on stores are not compatible enough to wrk efficiently with JB based roms, due to lack of upgradation of those apps from there developer's
so ICS based roms r better for ur issue, since they can support those apps

I try staying nice and calm but it's hard not getting mad..
So listen, I don't post stupid questions in a form because i'm lazy or i can't use google. In reality i've been searching such an app which exactly supports my needs for few hours, i've also tested few apps, but sadly my search was unsuccessfull.
Considering that the world is full of noobs posting sometimes unhappy, not well explained or just unintelligent posts I can partially understand your replies.. PARTIALLY!
But this is a Question and Answers forum and you do NOT have to write me "use google there are lot of apps and search the one for your needs"
If you CAN'T give a competent answer do not reply!
If you do not understand what exactly has been requested, read the topic until you do and then reply only if your answer is competent!
Now please do no more post reply on this thread you're not hitting the topic anymore and you can't help further!!
If somebody knows an App which exactly fullfills my needs, feel free to post it..
@ OP
Have you found such an app? I am also in search.

Same here @ OP
Would really appreciate a response.
The OP's outrage at being told to use Google is just as hilarious as it was almost two years ago.
I just want to be able to forward calls from specific contacts (not send to voicemail). I currently have all undesired callers automatically hung up on.
Hi frnd,
I found out a method which works perfectly for me....Hope this will be useful for u as well.
first add the particular number from which u don't want to receive calls to a call blocking list app.( i used cm security app)
second, go to your call settings, and enable 'call forward when busy' to your any other number or to which number u want the calls to forward
That's It...now if the blocked number called u, it will get hang up and automatically redirected to another number..

[Q] Receiving texts from 5 digit VERIZON number while using "Liquid Smooth" Rom

[Q] Receiving texts from 5 digit VERIZON number while using "Liquid Smooth" Rom
Anyone know why i am getting texts from a 5 digit verizon number while running the Liquid Smooth rom?? Doesnt happen on Beans...
What do the texts say?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
Nothing, message is blank. its happened to me on carbon rom as well...
actually i take that back...its from a 4 digit number "6250". and message says VZWNMN:4. and i have got 4 messages from it within the last hour...
It's something having to do with emails and backup assistant plus. You need to log onto your myverizon page via a computer and turn off backup assistant plus under "features"
ok, been fumbling around my verizon last hour, cant find anywhere to "turn off" backup assistant plus. my verizon is a nightmare...
finally found it...but of course where i click on the link to take me there, it says unavailable at this time. not surprised ...

[Q] Any messenger wants your phone number and steal your contacts?

No idea if I'm in the right section.
I am using an Note 2 for a few month and now I was interested in installing a messenger. I knew before that I would never use whatsapp because it is copying your contacts list and that is something I don't like.
So I was looking around and it seems, virtually every messenger wants to have my phone number or access to my contacts list.
It is really annoying when someone ask me "do you have whatsapp / do you have line messenger" and I all I can reply is "no, I would be forced to give out my phone number and/or send all my contact to some faceless major corporation"
Now you would ask "why did you get an android phone in the first place?", well... because my 3 year old phone felt very slow (1 touch on an icon, wait 1-2 seconds until something happened) and very restricted with audio and video support.
The hardware on this new phone is just perfect, no complaints at all. I also never registered to google play and have no plans in ever doing so.
So why is every messenger so interested in my personal information? I don't want to share this. Is there an alternative that is not so interested in your personal information?
I am on the internet since 2000 and haven't given my phone number to any company since, why should I start now?
I won't.
I think u should have another number for it,for bussines or soc med purpose only

Answer
If you don't want to give your phone number to any applications,
then you better say that you don't have a online chat/message service installed
There are apps available online to make a lock in whatsapp so that no one can view it except you.

What kind of message is this that my carrier is popping up on my screen? (not sms)

Apparently as a new member I can't link to a pic, and doesn't look like the forum accepts them directly uploaded here... so the screenshot is at jasonandemilyatkins.com slash temp/mtn.jpg
My carrier (MTN in Africa) sends an amazing amount of spam sms messages from several new numbers each month, so you try to block as many as you can and they make more next month. However, recently they've starting sending other messages, and I can't figure out how, so I can't figure out how to block them.
I had read a thread in the past suggesting it could be an emergency alert. I had shut them off, but just now when I went to confirm, they were turned back on - so now I shut them off again and will see if the messages stop.
If not an emergency alert, any other guesses as to how this message is arriving?
It seems like amazingly bad form to use an emergency alert platform meant for public safety to advertise a promo, if that is what they're doing.

As long as you are on their network there is nothing that you will be able to do to stop it. I would. Look into the spamming laws in your country.

There has to be some way to stop it. That's why I'm trying to figure out first which kind of message it is. Is your bet on emergency alert?
