So I'm looking at flashing a new ROM onto my phone, but I don't want to lose my data. Text messages I would like to keep, but most importantly is my saved game data.
Is there a way of backing this up and restoring it once the new ROM has been flashed? Some of the games are Xbox Live enabled, so is the saved game data backed up through this?
Come across some forums, but mostly old posts, nothing that up-to-date.
I am currently running Deepshining 2.0, with radio 17.5006.08.27 (17.08.50.06U). OS version is 7.10.8835.35.
I am looking into getting a new device (probably a Nokia Lumia 900), is there a way of transferring data onto this new device?

I asked about this very subject not too long ago; I was told WP7 Backup.

So I have installed the new ROM every time dcd has shared it, let's face it, he and many others do a phenomenal job of helping us make the most of our PPC.
My problem is that I am tired of losing my settings, emails, texts, and installed applications. I sync my PPC to keep my contacts, calendar, and tasks so that is not an issue, but everything else is.
Does anyone know of a software solution or any other may inwhich I can switch to the newest ROM and still maintain everything else as is or even create some sort of backup that would reinstall everything that I have the way it was right before I upgraded?

Sprite Backup or PIM backup.....plus there are others...these are the most common.....Sprite is superiror for custom settings....
The sprite backup image bricked me, not sure why.
So I will be re-installing everything again this time...
full backup programs often cause problems when updating rom. You should try something like uc or sashimi to backup settings. I prefer sashimi, but may prefer uc. In any case, you can use cregeditor to find your settings by changing the settings, backing up registry, and then change settings back to what you want. Next compare new registry to saved registry.
I use PIM backup, you can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
I also use this AutoInstall program that helps me install all the cabs and stuff i want with a single click.
Find it here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20753&highlight=autoinstall
I prefer this method instead of making OEM's.

The best way to do this is to learn a bit about User Customizations (aka UC, read about it here). I have all of my cabs on my SD card and those files that I copy over, so when you finish running DCD rom it looks for a file called sdconfig.txt that descibes what you want to happen to further customize your phone. You can also have xml to change all of the registry keys to change your today screen, assign your buttons and most anything else you can do manually.
After running the RUU and then activesync, it takes me about five minutes to get my phone EXACTLY how it was. If I spent more time customizing XML and so forth, I would have no time getting all the settings and preferences exactly how I like it. This is the solution that works so much better than Sprite or SPB backups when upgrading ROMs. It is much easier than it sounds.

This happened because drivers and other dependent files changed from ROM to ROM when DCD upgraded various things. This is why this is a bad solution.
P.S. Bricks are paperweights that go back in for a replacement. You just caused enough problems to necessitate a hard reset.
What I find annoying is every time i upgrade to a new ROM i have to make new bluetooth partnerships and setup my wifi access points again.

This is the price we pay for having shiny new things. If newer ROMs don't offer you any noticeable upgrades, you should stay where you were. Some people are still at 2.3.x and happy.

Stay where I am? Where's the fun in that
I have been contemplating flashing my fuze with one of the cooked roms but I wanted to know based on whats out there. What are the advantages to flashing into a cooked rom vs staying with the ATT rom? I also read that there is a way during the initial setup if you stay with the ATT rom that you can get rid of the bloatware. By doing this does it make it comparable to a flashed rom? Would the stock rom minus the bloatware be more stable than a cooked rom? Thanks for the help im new to this so I want to make sure I make the right choice.
If you press the reset button when the phone first boots up (installing applications/shortcuts) then it will be without all the AT&T stuff. I did that at first and the phone just sweet, i never really played with the AT&T ROM but the ones at the store were slow.
The ROMs from Da_G are AT&T without AT&T and some other improvements taking from other phones. You can try others but that's all dependent on what you want. Some ROMs come with tons of applications that people want and some come with none. Those choices are up to you which you choose. Look at the screenshots to see.
You should read around the forums and take a look at the stickies that are in this forum, but I can highlight a few of the improvements that you're going to see:
- Major increase in speed and snappiness
- More space for your programs
- Usually offers more options than the stock ROM
- Better battery life
- Better signal
Those are just a few, but I recommend flashing a cooked ROM to anyone I know that has a fairly good understanding of phones, winmo, etc. You should definitely do it as soon as possible.
dont do it....its addictive....
I swear flashing is worse than crack. I flash almost once a week and when I am not flashing I am customizing.....
and then when im not customizing I am flashing....lol
it never ends.
it not my fault, NATF keeps coming out with awesome roms

well techincally, that has nothing to do with the rom, it has to do with the radio
For all you guys that say "Flashing is addictive...ki flash once or twice a week, etc"
How do guy guys manage loosing all ur contacts, text messages and anything else you have on the phone, since u lose all that when u flash ur phone cuz of the hard reset.
I know there are programs like PIMBackup and sprite, but which ones do u guys use on a regular basis, with all this flashing..?!

I usually use PIM Backup. I try to stay with User Customizable (UC) ROMs to avoid installing a million cabs after I flash.

haha so true so true. flashing and customizing is a never ending cycle. once u flash, you need go back to the original stock roms nor feel like keeping your ppc simple. always trying to find new things to tweak it up and make it your own and not "AT&T's"

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For most part I use a combination of PIMBackup, Sprite, and WMDC with Outlook. I use other stuff (applications and configuration setup) to help with other tasks as well but I will only talk about the above.
PIMBackup to backup call logs, SMS, Contacts, and application configuration folders.
Sprite for a complete system back just in case I want to back to previous ROM, that way I don't have to reinstall, configure, and tweak again.
WMDC with Outlook for Calendar, Notes, Tasks, Contacts, and Applications to reinstall.
My 2 Cents
Flashing
as was said above gets you the best of everything (you can choose what works for you, you can even make feature requests and the cooks will usually include the good ones) you can go for a fully loaded rom with all the bells or a light rom to add only what you need.
Loosing contact data
I think most of us use the awesome PIM Backup to deal with this because it is rom independant and can be customized to backup stuff like call logs, txt messages and other things.
Cheers

I use UC to reinstall my apps and load my email configuration at first boot, and since I sync against an Exchange server using ActiveSync over 3G all I really have to do to get everything back the way it was is to enter my passwords.
I am typically back up and running in less than 5 mins after a flash.
stock vs flash
So for those of you that are experienced with custom roms, when you made the switch from the stock to the custom was there any type of uncertainty as far as stability was concerned? Also when you talk about the speed of the cooked rom is the loaded company rom that slow compared to the custom?
yes it is that different you'll notice mostly when you open and close the keyboard and it automatically goes into landscape. On the stock it's a grueling process going from landscape to portrait, most cooked roms do this quite efficiently.
Also for contacts backup i save all mine as PPCBckpContacts V1.3.0.0
It is an exe on your storage card and saves all your contacts on your storage card just run it once after every flash (and before each reset if you added #s) and you are ready. I've got all my cabs stored nicely on my SD card and UC ready if the rom supports it. If you are windering what UC is it's User Costumizable. you write one config file (simple just search for it) and put all the cabs in the correct area, after the flash insert SD card before setup and your phone installs and resets all your cabs for you.
Coming from the Evo 4g most of the Roms "required" a restore of App ONLY from TB to prevent errors and odd battery drains due to the Sense versions not being native to the phone. Is this also the case with the 3D if I were to move to a 3.5 Rom or even stay native 3.0?
Also, we had to create an EXT3 partition for apps ect... for the new Sense releases to run efficiently, is this the case for the 3D? or is it basically plug and play? I do not use a ton of apps outside of what comes with the phone, some random widgets, small games ect... 25 user installed apps at best. 2nd part, some of the games install data to sdcard, I have tb'ed them back WITH data and 1st opwen I have to reinstall data. is there something I am doing wrong?
Lastly, my work email is a basic pop3 account that I sometimes don't install to the phone because it's tedious to type in the custom smtp ect... yes it's laziness haha. How do I back up the mail account so on a new rom I can just load it back in without issues? the without issues part is where I would need it. If I have to do the steps every time to properly get notifications I will because if I assume and don't then it's pointless.
Thank you
and can I get 4G on any of the 3.5 Roms????
hahaha j/k on this one, I just had to throw it in there. I rarely even use 4G.
For some of your questions I have no idea about, such as the email, but I can tell you that most ROMs do not delete your data. I have flashed about 5 different ROMs and none of them have deleted apps or my saved accounts and email.
Its been as simple as move the ROM to the SD, and flash using CWM, and no lost data what so ever. Also I usually stick to 3.0 ROMs due to the instability of 3.5 ROMs. Also I guess I've answered your email question to.
I think you missed where I was going with this.
My concern is with Titanium Back up and the batch restore function. On the 4G it was suggested to NOT tap the app+data and only install the app back due to glitching and battery drain caused by the reinstall not being 100% in sync with the different Roms.
Example: I couldn't install Facebook on the RunnyBliss hybrid with my data from the backup I made on the Sensation ported Rom. Both Roms had a different base and 3.0/3.5 not being native to the 4G it would cause excessive drain or force closes. At least a higher % chance of it.
With 3.0 being native here my question is if Titanium Backup still needs to be treated the same way.
Also, and this one I think I figured out, the 4G required a special partition set up due to the lack of Ram but i was curious if the 3.0/3.5 Roms also required this if I do not use apps2sd. I think I resolved this with some reading though.
The email one I tinkered around and found my answer, so basically I just need the 1st one still haha. And the bottom one lmao!
I plugged my Radar into the computer for the first time a few days ago as I had a screen problem I was hoping to fix.
Zune backed up my phone and then applied 9 updates.
I then reset the phone to hopefully try and resolve my screen issue.
I then wasn't able to restore my phone because the backup was taken before the updates were applied.
Does anyone know how to do either of the following:
1. Restore the older backup to the updated phone to bring back my apps and data.
2. Restore the phone to the pre-updated state so I can restore the backup.
Obviously I'm very annoyed that Zune made a backup of my phone and then as soon as it was done the backup became useless as it applied the updates.

I think zune backs ups are a bit of a dark art, you would have been better to have perhaps done them individually, making backups along the way. As for going back, if your unable to restore the backup then your pretty much out of luck.
I am curious as to why you think restoring the backup will work though, if there was any problems before the backup then the backup would have backed them up to too.
As to your second question, after certain updates the ROM is also updated, making it impossible to roll back unless you have ROM to flash, I wouldn't rate your chances on restoring from that eight if I'm honest, it wasn't always possible to restore the hd2 after a hard reset

Resetting didn't fix the screen problem so I'll have to change the screen as the problem is obviously hardware related. Resetting to clear the issue was a longshot anyway.
What you're saying about not being able to roll-back updates makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Think about it... why would you only be able to write one kind of update to the phone. i.e. later updates. Should be totally possible to reload earlier updates to take the phone back to how it was.
Listen, I don't know the answers but I do know that its not "always" possible to jump back to a very old update, for whatever reasons it doesn't aways allow it, I've done backups at each update and can roll back as far as I have backups for...does ir make sense? Not completely although there maybe something to do with the actual ROM updates and not minor OS updates

I recently started getting notifications that I hadn't backed up my settings in a while. Which was odd because its set to do it automatically. When I looked, it said it was lasted backed up 3 months ago, and when I touch backup now, it looks like it starts backing up, but it gets to around 97%, then says it failed and to try again later. I have tried on mobile data and on Wi-Fi, and I have plenty of space left in my OneDrive account. I don't want to delete the existing backups because I cant create a new one to replace it
Has anyone come across this before and know what the solution is?
you must delete old one to create new... new settings backup for 8.1 is quite different from old 8.0 backup and for some people old backup make problems... after delete all working again without problem...
if that's the case shouldn't this be happening automatically? I've had the device nearly 2 years and its only in the last few weeks I've been getting this notification
