I have searched for an explanation on this and can't seem to find it...under mobile networks=>network mode there are 4 to choose from. I'm not sure which one to choose from can someone point me to a site that explains each one (if there is one) or explain it to me...the reason for asking is I live in a 4g late area but travel to a 3g only area and have data connection issues. Any help will be much appreciated.

I have this odd issue where I can be in an area that I know has 3g but my phone won't use it unless I set it to wcdma manually. It only says edge unless I change it. It then picks up 3g and works fine, anyone know a solution or reason it does this, it appears agnostic to rom or modem as it has happened in various configurations.

This is a dumb question, but is the 3G weak in your area?

Not at all when i do change it over to wcdma is gets full signal usually. I get 2-4 download as well when i change it.
I didnt see anything regarding this and i have been searching and searching how to get this done. Some might say turning 4g off on this phone ruins it. Personally I only use 4G when i need it. Otherwise i want to be on 3G to save battery and data usage.
Download:
"Phone info"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=myc.phone.PhoneInfo
Once app is installed, open app.
-Select device info
-For select cdma auto (PRL)
-For 4g select LTE/cdma/EvDo
(Doing this from phone so please let me know if link doesnt work)
I know that juice defender app does that.

I searched and i asked a couple times in the forum with no answers or guidance to answers. So if the other options work for you then by all means go for it. This app is very much like the lte onoff i was using on my tbolt so im familiar with the process. Easy and simply IMO. Hope it helps anyone else that may have been looking for this option.

You can't toggle between 2g/3g/4g on any of the U.S. versions as far as I know.
I was with a few friends who have iPhone 5's and we all downloaded speedtest.net and ran them. One friend on sprint did 6mbps I did 16mbps... That's about the norm for me. And my friend on att did 52mbps. We were all blown away. Now I'm sure we were right next to his tower. So I started digging and cannot figure out anything about the antenna settings I'm supposed to use to get the best speed. I'm running the energy ice Rom. But has anyone had any boost in speed while playing with different settings? Or any web links I can read to try some stuff out for myself.

ST runs on the t-mobile network. You need to flash a compatible modem.
Dude I'm on st running the latest att modem and check these out.

Straight talk runs on either. Depends on your area. You're most likely at&t seeing as 90% of straight talk is.
Straight Talk leases their services. The reason it's slow, it's NOT hspa. It's 3G and that's most likely the best you'll get.

OP, are you being throttled? Seems ST possibly throttles on 100MB a day and 2GB a month. That would leave you with H+ and horrible speeds. Contact ST and ask them to reset your network.
They used to throttle me ALL THE TIME! Good price but **** service. Went back to AT&T so I can use MY data how I pay to use it, not how they want me to.

No I'm not and like said I'm using the same sim I had on my my last ph which was an inspire and never had any problems with speeds only now that I'm on the note I also can't send pics mms actually the only rom I was able to send mms was liqsmooth but the apn settings were a tiny diff most only allow int,mms or int+mms on liq it had where u could input your like default supl mms or whatever

Opps. My bad. I was thinking SimpleMobile.
Have you input the straight talk APN?
At any rate I read somewhere else online that it can also depends on the radio you have which I don't know much about I do know about rooting and flashing custom roms what I have never done tho is changed out radios or kernels on on that site somebody said something about UCl F 2 I have looked online and have not been able to find a downloadable 1

Flashing a modem is easier than flashing a rom. Get the modem.bin on your sd card, boot into recovery, flash the modem.bin using CWM/TWRP (no wiping needed), reboot, check for correct APN settings (some roms don't include APN settings).
Im sorry bear with me ranger but can u go a li little more in depth for me where do I get that modem. bin

If you have really slow speeds then you are either being throttled or you are not filling in the APN correctly. Does not sound like a modem issue. What speed does your notification bar show you connected as? How about settings > about phone > status >Mobile Network Type: ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31772854
In the first post of the linked thread you will find the download link for the UCLF2 modem and the recommended ST APN settings.
You may be being throttled as mentioned

How about a screenshot of the status page in settings? APN looks good. Speed test sure looks like you are throttled. For chit and giggles try removing the proxy and port from the APN and see what you get. Not the MMS proxy and port.
Anyone figured out how

I'm looking to change the LTE settings as well.
sprint tells me I'm in a saturated LTE area, so im assuming that its there, just slightly too weak cuz it only drops in certain areas... if someone could figure this out my life at work would be so much better
anyone figure this out yet?

Call Sprint Tech support 888-211-4727 and tell them you need your MSL for your Note 3 and if they question you just tell them you are a developer.
Dial ##3282#
Choose "Edit" and enter your MSL
Go to Edit and to LTE
You can make changes if they are available to change but I am currently on the 4.4.2 KitKat leak and there are no options other than LTE on or off
Not sure if there were options on 4.3 cause I never needed to edit them.
This is what I found and messed with
