N4 to 920 needing help - Nokia Lumia 920

Hello guys, I am a android fan boy, but needing a change. I only use my phone for texts, web and calls. So I am looking to get a tablet for my gaming.
I am planing on selling my nexus N4. I would be looking to get a 920 or a HTC 8x.
My questions is the Windows phone good. What can you do and what cant you do,
Gaming is it big on the Windows phone yet or behind.
Thanks

If texts, web and calls is all you need
1. why spend the money on the top shelf device? Why not go with a lumia 520 or 620?
2. why do you care for games? Or what it can or can't do? It does texts, calls and web.

I don't want pirate games. Do you think the wp platform can take its place next to android and ios. Is it worth jumping across. Have any off you jumped ship.

I have not jumped ship, WP was my first smarthphone. But as you can see in my signature, my try at android was less than statisfying, so I ditched android completely.

look, Lumia 920 is very powerful and good device...
here is how look new Modern Combat 4 game
only what i dont like on Lumia 920 is speakers located on bottom and sound is more higher on that side. very unusual when play games... better is with headphones
you can look for Windows Phone games here

Cool. So would I hate it as a android user. Or should I look at it with a open mind. I love the look and feel off the Nokia.
Wonder how much development is out there for the 920

Windows Phone dont have many apps which have android but WP is fast, fluid, stable and very safe OS. Also in combination with killer camera (in Lumia 920) is must have WP device. Nokia nonstop working to improve OS and software, release games exclusive only to Nokia devices, and sometimes give games for free only to Nokia owners (which other must pay).
Also Nokia Music service is good (i love free mix radio's ) and waiting for July and PRC2.0 update which enable FM radio
I miss some apps from android but use WP almost two years and dont thinking to leave... if Nokia continue with great work i will stay with WP9 also

Well we just got my other half a HTC radar and she says it amazing. Still getting use to switching from android but she does love it. Part from needing to pay for facebook. Not sure why you have to pay for Facebook.
I'm going to play with it and see what I think. I am slowly getting bored of android I got bored of iOS very quickly felt very stale and not great. Android has always been a love of mine but its slowly losing its appeal.

yep, official app not bad... but i use Facebook JDB free app merged with Social Scout Pro (Free version also available)

For facebook an app? Have none of you heard of a web browser and the actual facebook page? I mean apps are good. By WTF do you need an app when the webpage can be accessed easier and have no missing content?
If you want a phone you can customize, then forget the Lumia. The only thing you can customize is the color of some of the tiles, the lock screen image, and custom ringtones. Reminder and notifications are all factory, there is no LED to let you know you have mail or messages, there are good apps and there are more daily,. But if you can access the site on the web then don't bother with a restrictive app.

And why did the programmers of the platform even bothered to implement SNS if users want crappy apps for everything.
To me what I have in People, Messaging and Me HUB is perfectly enuff from all the SNS I use (FB, Twitter, LinkedIn)

Android to blackberry

I'm thinking of buying the new bb bold 9900, I just wanted to ask for opinions on switching from android to blackberry, is there any pros or cons? Thanks

I'm also thinking about blackberries, but what Android has to offer is just too good. Blackberry is going to be dead if RIM doesn't pull something out quick. I really like the form factor of them, but just that their OS is just crap compared to Android/iOS/Windows 7.

Why? Is there anything you can't do with Android?
Even if you don't tinker too much with os or use custom roms, you can do much more on Android.
1.Media Player ( with audio effects)
2.Office apps
3.Navigation
4.EMails
5. Social apps
6. Gaming
Everything that is required and much more is there.
On the other hand if you are bored with Android and don't want yourself to be tempted to flash roms again and again, you can buy a blackberry.
If you don't care about equalizers and audio effects, go for a windows
7 phone. Mango RTM (released to manufacturers) update is already available and official will be available after September 27.

I don't think anyone could have said it better
I had a Blackberry curve for about 4 days before I decided I hated it. I went back to the store and traded it for my P500h.
The blackberry is just simply a phone with some gadgets added to it and lots of messaging and email capability.
The android it just so much more than that. There are so many things which the blackberry comes short, like media playing, customization, games, file management, user modification, etc. It just seems silly to go back to something so rudimentary in comparison. But if all you want is a phone that does email, messaging, calling, and some music playing, get a blackberry. Or better yet, get a cheaper not so smart phone and get the same thing.
If you want an android phone with the look and feel of a blackberry you could get a motorola droid pro.

The only pro of Blackberry over other smartphones is... the userbase.
Some people are already attached to their BBMs and with these people a lack of BBM will cost you socially or in business when you find yourself out of the loop. If you're faced with that situation, then you can say you need a Blackberry.
For other cases, with the same price you can get a much better phone running Android, Windows or even Symbian. Alternatively, get a cheap, old model Blackberry for BBM and another mid-range Android with custom ROM for everything else you want out of a Smartphone.

What app has been a complete waste of money?

I was just thinking the other day about how much money I have wasted on apps. And there have been quite a few on my behalf...
Spb shell 3d £14.99
Goto lockscreen £2.99
Air sync for dropbox £4.99
Plus others. Lol

Rom Toolbox Pro.
Utterly useless. Developer fobbed me off when I made an initial support request then left me hanging after I made a subsequent request (and hinted I might have wanted a refund) & didn't get back to me/ignored me.
A very poor experience all round
LauncherPro Plus has to be one for me!
And, iSyncr for iTunes.
i do not know if you can call this waste of money but i have purchased games and they are top games like gameloft ones when they were on offer but hardly play any of them.. Captain America, Driver and etc...Just could not help myself...But do not even play them so yeah i guess that was a waste of money.... and apps like fitness manager and so on...haha me fitness....probably i see a bargain and can not resist myself..problem is even if it is a bargain i hardly use it
HDWidgets...bought it when it was on sale(10% price sale ) Complete waste of money.
I know what you mean with the 10p sale. The gameloft games are hit and miss. Numerous adw themes. That I don't use.
Although there have been some top apps that have been well worth it.

Never real spent enough on an app to worry to much - Sygic's maps are easily the most expensive, but no regrets there.
Bought a few that have never made it onto newer ROM installations - Better Keyboard (Swiftkey is so much better), adw launcher and a fewthemes (now on Go Launcher ex), App Folder Pro (unnecessary).

And as for the "Droid" for a nickname, no sir droid is a phone and android is the os.

I don't like being constrained. I was an early adopter of the g1, I broke a few and didn't have money to buy a new one. I got an iPhone 3g real cheap from att. I couldn't stand the constraints built into iOS. It made me insane that I couldn't change the wallpaper, this "feature" wasn't added to iOS until much later.
Not into being told how to use MY phone! Android for life!
I was also kind of disgusted with how apple conducts itself as a company and the pervasive culture of elitism in the iOS community didn't strike me as cool either.

This. 1000 times this.
The customization and community/developer support makes the possibilities endless for Android. iPhone has some great things but you still can't change the default look and feel of iOS. I get bored with looking at the same thing all the time.
Firstly, I've chosen the Android over iOS simply because Android OS is smarter as we all call smartphone. How is it smarter? We all know.
Secondly, variety of choices, more options.
Thirdly, it's cheaper.
And to OP, "Droid" and android are two different things. Droid as you capitalize the letter D, is a phone. Start using correct terminologies.
Switched to Android after WM 6.5 was declared dead. Didn't care for the backwards direction I saw WP7 heading.

This is hilarious.
I use Android because of the ability to do so much customizing without needing to void the warranty. I carried a myTouch 3G and iPhone3G at the same time for a number of months (almost a year). My iPhone icon grid looked like every other iPhone, but no two Android phone's home screens look the same.
I'm not cool enough for an iphone.

I think adobe is stupid for not supporting it anymore. Yes, html5 may be the future, but it's not the present. Chrome works for most stuff on my phone, but almost any video that I come across on any tech site or anything else I still find myself copying the link to the stock browser to watch it. It's just stupid when so much of the web still relies on flash. I have no problem with it being phased out, but they're crippling mobile browsing by not supporting mobile anymore. As soon as the next update for desktop flash comes, mobile browsing will suck until html5 is the universal standard, which it currently is nowhere near being. At least with tab syncing between mobile and desktop chrome I'll be able to find anything I need easily on my laptop, but it's still going to be a hassle. Stupid adobe, just stupid.
Back on topic, I'm excited for JB to come to the Note. I'm highly tempted to shell out 350 for a gsm gnex, but I'm sure our awesome devs will have something awesome soon enough. Until then, I'm fully satisfied with what we have already...couldn't ask for more.

Yeah, about the only thing holding me back from buying the gnex is how awesome the note is, and the fact it's likely the next nexus will be out within a year, and my note is definitely more than good enough to tide me over. I just hope Samsung wins the bid for the next one. If they do, I'll be buying the next nexus for sure as well as the note 2. What we really need is the nexus note though, I would throw my wallet and my left nut along with a contact for my firstborn child at google/Samsung for that =]. I just can't quite justify spending 350 on software, with lesser hardware, that we will eventually see for free. If not sooner rather than later.

[Q] New Dell Venue 8 Android

I bought a Venue 8 with android 4.2.2 a week ago. I have been searching the internet and have not found any info on how to root this device.
Can somebody please help?
Thanks

+1. Got mine in the mail this afternoon. Loving it so far and wish we'll have some developers support. :good:
Got one as well. Is V1.39 the latest software version?

That is what I have on mine.
Transformer TF701t / XDA Premium HD
I've 1.39 too. I've a question, do you guys find there's a line of color on the right side of the screen (when landscape) is not correctly display? Specially when running a rgb test, can clearly see the line comes out green when it should be red. My roommate has one too and he has the same problem on his venue 8. I wonder is it just our units or its also the same with everyone.

I'm afraid there is not a haptic feedback feature. I just checked and do not see it in any settings.

aww dat sucks, oh well hows the da to day running of the tab? is it efficient, much lag?
I have been using it for reading and browsing mostly and it works really well. One thing I noticed is how accurate the colors are on the screen. I compared it to my Nexus 5 and it seems the colors are more accurate on the Venue. (I compared my favorite teams colors.) I think for daily activities this tablet works good thanks to the speedy 2Ghz processor. I haven't done any gaming though. Overall, I like it.
Oh, camera doesnt have flash and the shutter is slow. But I'm not gonna be taking pictures with this thing

Sounds good then I'm a student so my number reason for wanting this one is the size and use of using day evernote or super note with it

Anyone know about getting 4.4 on this thing?
I'm all for rooting and what not, but I really want the photo editor of KitKat. Im a photographer and that editor looks super cool so 4.4 is important to me.

Wow, so I got to play with one of these today and while I like the size, my goodness the screen was unusable. Not that it wouldn't take my input its that it would hit somewhere else on the screen. It was a floor model so naturally it was messed around with and in German but I could not for the life of me get the Gallery app to open.
I want to have tablet as a portfolio of sorts for my photography so I wanted to see how images looked. Sure I could get the Nexus 7 with its higher resolution but I like the size of 8" tablets. That 1" really does equate to more screen room. Heck 7" isnt much bigger than my 5.2" phone. The only real other options are the Samsungs Tab/Note which I am not found of and the LG Pad/Tab 8.3 which would be my first choice except the price.
I should receive mine in the next few days! Hope that a dev will also get one and start looking at it

May have been a bad unit or may be it was lacking the firmware updates (there were 2 since launch). The gallery app works as it is suppose too. While the resolution isn't the best compared to a 1080p screen the colors look very good. Not in "saturated" good but in "natural" good. You're right about the extra inch: 8 incher feels more like tablet than the 7 incher does.

Good find. But seems like thin info and unless I don't know about them, I don't believe there are any models with 4G as noted.

as with all newer phones and tablets, remember tech companies like samsung, dell acer, etc like to push out updates for their newest devices first then going backwards to slightly older and continuing till they want to cut em loose with the updates. so that means 4.4 will be released to the venue 8 is thats only inevitable, the question just remains when? maybe not till holiday season is over though simply because im assuming dell is gonna have a goood ole time keeping up with production once tomorrow and the weekend hits.
who knows? just enjoy it till then.
so excited for toorrow to order
btw how long does shipping usually take? (if anyone ordered in in canada yet)
