[Q] rds fm radio p769 - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

Hey Ive notice no mention of the rds fm radio on the p769. The motorola atrix2 had an app that worked very nicely, enabling it when you plugged in headphones which it uses as an antenna.
Is there an app available for the p769?

No app will add what the hardware doesn't already support. You could always use internet radio apps if you have a data plan.

The P760 has the 4.7" screen along with RDS radio.

It's an xda site. But it does say those are preliminary specs. Usually they depend on users corrections..

Our phone is different from the international version. We have a 4.5" screen: http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-P769-optimus-l9 It's part of the reason why we can't use the P760 ROMs, different screen with different touchscreen. As to why they released 2 variants of the L9 with different screen sizes I don't know..

Dude I have attached Fm Radio app from P760 eu open.
If you have root then Copy apk and .odex to /system/app and set the right permissions.
It might work out for you. best of luck .

Clockcycle, I assume you tried the apk and it fails, right? No FM radio?

I tried the apk on CM 10.1 for p769. It will not install. I also tried placing the apk in /system/app/ and it will not run.

no luck
I was unable to get this installed as well.
I got it into the /system/app folder but couldnt seem to change permission from read only. It let me try to install but kept failing.

I tried this as well and it failed, of course. I do doubt that we have an FM radio in our device, but it might still be worth a little more investigation. I noticed in the AndroidManifest.xml file there are what appear to be dependencies which don't exist in CM10.1, like com.lge.fmradio and com.lge.provider.fmradio, etc...
Has anyone looked into this any further? I'd like a radio

I would think the FM radio would need stock to work correctly. Or try spirit FM radio app

Both versions have a GSM/WCDMA/HSPA chipset, but GSM capability has been disabled in the Verizon phone. Interestingly, the RAZR uses the Qualcomm MDM6600...which is capable of all the aforementioned networks.
As for activating the GSM radio in the Verizon version... my guess is that it will require a custom kernel of some sort...

The RAZR uses the TI OMAP4430, which doesn't have any built-in radios. There's no reason why the Verizon version should have GSM/WCDMA radios.

The MDM6600 is actually a modem, and not a SoC if that's what you were thinking. It's used on all of Verizon's current global phones, including the iPhone.
From the FCC on the Bionic:
The WCDMA/GSM network functions have been disabled by the firmware and are SIM locked by all US operators on this product.

And Anandtech:
...This power amp is actually quad band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. In its shipping form, the Bionic is limited to just 850/1900 for CDMA2000 in the USA, however, I have very little doubt this device could also be used with WCDMA on all four bands with some tweaking. FCC documents also talk about WCDMA functionality being disabled...

I was thinking along the same lines.
I have a Photon and the GSM bands are locked from being used on other US carriers. There have beem discussions that the radio files are what need to be changed/hacked. I wonder if the premise would be the same as I'd love to make this a global phone...

Hmmm... there doesn't seem to be much interest in this.
Modifying AMSS is really dangerous and I don't think it will be possible even after a bootloader unlock as radio is protected with another "lock code". It should be unlocked only on Engineering devices.
Would it be possible to load the radios of the GSM version onto it?

If there is one thing that Moto locks its boot loader, it's specifically for that.
From what I remember, Moto has some proprietary stuff there, so cracking that will get you into a lot of legal trouble...

Wait... What? Why would someone disable such a huge feature? Also, if motorola says a phone has GSM radio and it doesn't can't you complain?
Loading GSM radio on it won't brick it as the chip is the same, MDM6600.
The problem is loading it: the different radio bootloader (that isn't the AP bootloader that is being unlocked with ICS update) signature won't allow you to.
So this is a dead end?

I am very interested in this!
I travel a lot and need gsm access in Europe and Asia.
I am tired of carrying two phones and trying to keep them synced.
With all of the smart people here we can't figure this out?
I remember enabling the fourth band on my Moto GSM E6 rokr, which was also turned off by the carrier.
feel free to correct me if I'm wrong
But from what I understand, the phone is capable of utilizing gsm as well as cdma out of the box. Otherwise when you went to other countries you would not be able to use the phone. But verizon has agreements with various providers around the world to provide gsm service. And I seem to recall seeing on my device info page, while on my my verizon online access for my bionic, a number listed as the sim puk unlock code. Which may or may not unlock the phone for other sim cards, but I distinctly recall seeing it there. So check your device info page on my verizon. I just thought I'd share because some of the answers get overlooked because people simply don't try the proper channels. Myself included. For instance, who knew that the reset procedure for the razr is explained on the 2nd page of the user manual? I had already google'd it before reading it in both the printed manual and the built in help file.

[Q] FM Radio on i747?

For those that have been lucky enough to have received the i747 model, are you able to determine if there is an FM Radio tuner on it? I checked out the LTE i747 yesterday at the Samsung launch party in Toronto but I beleive they were pre-production models and firmware and did NOT have the FM app. Now whether the tuner exists but the app was removed or not added is a different story.
As many of you know, the international model has the FM tuner. In the past, the international model i9000 and i9100 also had it but the North American variants did not. I am not sure if the fm hardware tuner is located on the CPU itself and does not come onboard the s4 chip, or if AT&T and other carriers have decided to remove it.
In the specs for the i747, most sites list the Fm Radio as TBD for this model. I don't use the radio a lot, but it is nice sometimes. Also, it uses barely any battery and no data to use. So I am very curious if the FM app is there. And if not, I wonder if we could just extract the app from i9300 and move it to this model - which would require the i747 to have the hardware tuner of course.
There doesn't seem to be a FM app - So no direct access that I could see. Doesn't mean its not there though.
Not sure if it will work, but here is the apk from the international version.

Thanks for posting the apk. It may require root as it is a system app but will defintiely try it when I get mine next week. I am fairly certain the HTC One X had the same thing where the FM Radio exists but the apk was not added to the AT&T firmware. People can grab the APK from the Rogers firmware and install it to their AT&T One X. So now that I think about it, if HTC One X has the hardware tuner and using an S4 chip, its completely possible that the hardware will be there on the i747 as well. Some carriers may have it removed so that you'll use data to listen to the radio instead.
Won't install - but after root we may be able to
.... Surely AT&T didn't screw the hardware of of FM AGAIN
I also couldnt get that file to install, so instead i went to the market and downloaded just about every one i could find, and none of them worked. Many of them appeared to be working but not a single bit of sound out of the speakers/headset.
I believe they removed the FM Tuner hardware and instead, gave us the tunein app.
Yea so you use more data streaming data over their network

I doubt that was their goal. AT&T didnt give us the 50GB of dropbox because they were afraid of everyone eating bandwidth and causing a network catastrophe like when the first iPhone came out. So i think its safe to assume that this was Samsungs move. They didnt give us the quad core because of incompatibilities with the LTE networks, so instead they gave us the Snapdragon S4 and compensated with an extra gig of ram.
They also removed the FM Radio, so i think they compensated by giving us the TuneIn Radio.... kinda lame....
I used the i9100 prior to picking up my new SGH-747M from Rogers yesterday. The i9100 had FM radio. The antenna was built into the headphones and there was an application on the phone. I noticed the SGH-747 headphones looked slightly different and wasn't sure if they would work.
I downloaded the international FM APK but it won't install even after my device has been rooted.. My guess is that the headphones that come with the i747 probably won't have an FM antenna built in though.

Did your phone come with 4.1 or 4.0 stock?

What is exactly different from my V10, a RS987, and a Verizon one?

Hey guys!
I just saw that a root for the Verizon LG V10 has been released and that's super exciting news, but I want to know if the same root is possible with my device, what is the difference, and what is the same. I use a local carrier that only covers about 1/4th my state and I'm always getting weird versions of phones, mainly rebranded Verizon exclusives. Examples are instead of the Droid Turbo we had the Motorola MAXX, and back in the day we had the Milestone X rather than the Droid X. Same phone, different branding. My carrier is a CDMA carrier just like Verizon, and I believe we even use Verizon's LTE. The past few phones I've had the APN settings always had VZWINTERNET as the APN.
In the past I've rarely found information about my devices, especially rooting. With my Milestone I had to follow Droid X tutorials, for my Motorola MAXX XT1250 I had to follow a XT1225 tutorial, and I'm in the same boat now. I can barely find any posts at all related to the LG V10 RS987.
So my question is, will I be able to follow the Verizon method of rooting like I've done in the past? Or will there need to be a root specific to my device? Thanks in advance guys.

I'm at work right now so I can't call, and I've been waiting to chat for 15+ minutes and it keeps saying there's 9 a head of me. I did however find something interesting. I found a thread in the LG V10 general forums that shows how you could get blinking cat eyes on your second screen using QuickShortcutMaker, and it seems the cat eyes are exclusive to the Verizon VS990 model. I downloaded QuickShortcutMaker and I am able to load the cat eyes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66016810&postcount=25
So I spoke with LG support and they pretty much referred me to the online manual and assured me that a Verizon SIM card would work in my phone, but they were unable to tell me if a Verizon VS990 software update would work on my RS987 or if they used the same hardware.

As much as I want to try and root my phone, if I brick it I'm pretty much SOL since I can't find support for my model. I think I may just wait for somebody to post a download for the VS990 6.0 update and try flashing it using update mode.
Bumping this thread back up. The KDZ for the VS990 MM update has been released and I'm extremely tempted to try it. If I attempted to flash the Verizon KDZ would it brick my phone or would it fail to flash since it's not the correct model?
I would think the lgup software would throw an error if it doesn't work right. only one way to find out though unfortunately since your model phone doesn't have much support.
The RS987 should have the FM radio tuner enabled by default. Other than that there are no real differences at a hardware level.

I have a RS987 now. Funny thing about this phone is that it sort of doesn't really exist. The ebay listing stated it was an US Celluar variant. The phone itself has some Bluegrass celluar softs hiding inside.
My all time go to fav of QuickShortcutMaker quickly reveals vzw hidden goodies.
To me it appears that it was truly a vs990 that someone tried to rebrand as their own.

Note 8 FM Radio working on Snapdragon devices

I downloaded the Next Radio app and it works.
I even disabled data and WiFi to make sure it was only using FM radio and it worked, unlike my Axon 7 where it seem FM receiver locked and only works with Data or WiFi.
Just in case anyone else didn't know this was a possibility, as I didn't initially.
for how long did you leave wifi and cell data off for?
I can confirm this works. Disabled WiFi, data, cleared cache and data of next radio, plugged headphones in and it works! N950W (Canada version with Snapdragon)

Not long. I turns off days and wifi then tested the radio and changed through several radio stations with no issues. My Axon 7 would not play local station s with WiFi and data disabled. So it appears to be working.
Maybe I'll test again tonight when I get home.
BTW I'm on the AT&T Note 8, though that shouldn't make I difference.

Yes, Snapdragon version. I believe only the Snapdragon version has the FM tuner so the exynos version won't work with FM radio.
And yes I believe the Snapdragon version is locked down and not rootable so far. But that's not a big deal to me.
The easiest way to check if the phone uses FM radio or wifi/cell network is to disconnect headphones, FM radio needs headphones wire as antenna and it won't work without it unless maybe if you live right under FM tower, also if you're far away from the station you may hear FM interference. BTW working FM radio was confirmed way back, couple days after first sets reached customers, before 9/10 I think.
I am on Verizon and i can confirm it works and it is relying on the antenna unless I click the stream button.i also bunched up the headphones in my hand and put it on output to speaker and there is static on the weaker stations.

All the other FM radio apps seem to use data instead of the tuner chip in the Snapdragon SOC.
I like the simple tuner app on my LG V20. It allows my to long press or hit a time button to get the next in time station. NextRadio seem to your your location and data to give you a list of stations and info.
I'm going to see if I can find an APK for the V20 tuner and try it on my Note 8.
I am also interested in a real simple tuner app. Let me know if you come across any good ones

Well my brother has S8 Plus G955U (Snapdragon) and nextradio dosent work. Thats why i want to know which version of Note 8 are really working. I need to listen FM Radio because of my job. I read N955W does it, but which one else? Thanks
SM-N950U works, bought directly from Samsung for t-mobile
Also have the SM-N950U but mine is an AT&T device. I would imagine the FM Radio works on all Snapdragon Note 8, but that's just an assumption.
Not sure why your brother S8 Plus. Did he have headphones attached? I don't really know much about the S8 line move looked into that model.
My s8 from t-mobile worked fine, so is N8 from t-mo. I think all US models are N950U and Snapdragon, so all should work, but as I already mentioned it could be blocked by particular service provider, BUT as far as I know, even if you have phone from T-mo or Verizon, you could flash it with different software and probably unlock it, even if it is locked. So the answer to your question may not be as simple as it seems. Also, which service your brothers S8+ came from? Is it Verizon? Because in the past they liked to make life of their customers miserable, like not allowing any non Verizon phone on their network, just to give an example.
